New Chapter for A Long Vernal Season

Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Well, he's an interesting drunk.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Not as much fun as when he's on Draught of Peace.
that chapter almost ended badly O.o but im glad that minerva and poppy got it all worked out. but im curious...how can a woman come 6 times in the morning and still be functional for work? lol id be back in bed for another four hours at least D
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Not to give any of my *own* secrets away, but I understand that some women, even after lengthier "activity," find a cup of strong coffee with lots of half and half and some high protein breakfast to be quite restorative. And maybe a little something sweet, as well! Yes, Poppy and Minerva have been friends too long to let something like that fester. If they hadn't fixed things between them before Minerva left, it would have given hurt feelings on one side and guilty feelings on the other side time to grow. That would not have been good! So it's nice that they ended on a good note! Thanks for the review!
what a hypocrite!! lol he all but yelled at hermione to not see the other guy she was dating and he's out screwing around! :P i guess it is good for his practice tho
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Fortunately, he had retracted that request, or he'd be even more bothered by the fact, himself -- it doesn't escape his notice that he'd said that and then had sex afterward! LOL! Poor Severus! Even when his life is beginning to go right, he can't help but make missteps! Thanks for the review!
Drunk Severus is always cute. LOL. Okay, sorry, I indulged in a little fan silliness. He's always so serious but there's this childlike side of him that emerges in certain situations that is just so endearing. I doubt he'd see it that way. I expect Poppy has seen that side more often than most people.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm sure Severus would object to the word "cute," but I'm glad you used it! LOL! I think so, too. And I think you're right -- Poppy probably has seen that childlike side of him more than most people -- probably more than just about anyone but Minerva. Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally! Severus is coming to realize that what he's feeling for Hermione isn't love in the romantic sense but the love of one friend for another and one who's saved his life. NOW, let's get back to the Poppy/Sevvie fest. tee hee.Minerva is a hoot and she makes me laugh when she's trying to be helpful to Severus. She has a way of dealing with his nastiness that disarms him and then he opens up. I think that's great for him and a wonderful tool for her. I'm very much looking forward to the next section. I'm dying to see where Snape's adventures will lead next!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks, Hogwarts Duo! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter.Severus still has a ways to go before he understands his feelings fully, but if he listened to Minerva, it might be easier for him. She does have a way with him, that's for sure! I'm glad you find her a hoot! Thanks very much for the review!
I am loving the friendship between Gareth and Severus. The interaction between them is great. I do feel like they are treading awfully close to a relationship considering that was not an option earlier in the fic. I am glad to see that Severus is finally realizing that he is alive and he has a lot to live for, but I have to say I am a bit disappointed in him. I can't believe that even though he is going through this "puberty" thing that his logical mind is completely gone. I guess the thing I have about what is going on is that he has mutual sex with a man while fantasizing about Hermione. The next day he flirts with Poppy and all of the sudden is having hot monkey sex with her even though he wants to date Hermione. He continues to have sex with Poppy even though they BOTH say they won't and now he can't even be completely honest with Hermione. And to top it off this all happens in less than one week. I don't care how strong or smart a girl is, but if she cares for him enough to attempt a relationship with him more than likely she will wait on him even if it is subconciously. I realize that this is fiction, but to be honest, after having been in a similar situation, if I was Hermione, I would have to push the friendship aside...I wouldn't be able to hide the hurt especially if I saw him with the person he preferred over me. And what would Poppy say of she knew about Gareth...All that aside....the writing is great and I am on the edge of my seat STILL!!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, I'm glad you're on the edge of your seat! There's more going on with Severus than he completely realizes yet. His logical mind isn't gone, but he's trying to apply logic to emotional and relationship problems and he doesn't have the experiential basis to apply the logic very well yet -- and he doesn't completely trust his feelings to be able to "go with his gut" in these kinds of situations. In fact, part of the problem is that he is using logic rather than emotion -- both are important. He is so used to thinking of emotional responses getting him into trouble (because he usually was acting out of emotions like anger, bitterness, jealousy, envy, self-loathing, etc.) that he doesn't do well with the more positive emotions. Severus won't always make the right decision or say/do the right thing even when he tries, and sometimes he'll be completely clueless as to what he said or did wrong. Sometimes, it will just be a Mars/Venus kind of thing! lol!At least Severus isn't hurling potions jars at his students any longer . . . at least not that we know of! He's been emotionally maturing slowly over the course of the last few fics, but this area is one that is new to him. He would be wise to listen to Minerva -- she has more of a clue than he thinks she does!I'm glad you like the interactions between Severus and Gareth! Their friendship will continue, so you'll see more conversations between them. Thanks for the review! I'll likely put the next chapter up either tonight or tomorrow, so the "edge of the seat" should be relieved for a short time, anyway!
Response from sandlapper (Reviewer)
Typical male!! LOL! I am afraid the edge of my sest will stay that way for a couple days...I am headed out of town and won't get to read anything before sunday night. Perhaps there might be TWO chapters waiting for me? Again, I am enjoying the story, but it is so like a soap opera...you just want to yell at the people to see what is right in front of them!!!
excellent as always. Feeling impatient but for what I am not sure! LOL. Oh the drama of Severus Snape. He is so dramatic, though.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm glad you enjoyed it!Isn't Severus dramatic, though? Makes him fun to write -- it's hard to imagine him being dull! lol! Thanks for the review!
I've always been a big fan of Severus and Hermione fics, but I must say you've got me rooting for Severus and Poppy. I'm glad Severus isn't going to just lead Hermione on and decided to break it off now- at least temporarily. He is maturing emotionally quite rapidly. I also enjoyed hearing that the old characters from RaM got together for dinner. Like Albus said "It felt almost like the old days" before so many bad things happened to many of the characters. Its good to imagine them recovered and enjoying a normal life again.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you liked that little aside about the dinner. It is nice to imagine them enjoying an evening together!Yes, Severus did do the brave thing and break it off with Hermione rather than let it go along while he figures things out, perhaps hurting them both more later.I started out in HP fanfic reading some really good SSHG fics, so I know what you mean. :-)Thanks for the review!
Poor Hermione. She must have been terribly disappointed, but she still handled the news with great dignity. I wonder if she went out into the garden to blast apart a few rosebushes? She's a smart little witch and Severus is right, she'll figure out the real reason why he put off dating her sooner or later. Severus better watch out when she does, considering how she reacted when Ron was making an ass of himself with Lavender. Or did that happen in the RAM-verse? I don't remember.Severus has changed a great deal, but in some ways, he is much the same man. I wonder how Minerva felt about the return of Crabby Thundercloud Severus? It certainly didn't put her off any. I thought she was going to pester him until he hexed her. About the chapter preview - wheeeeeee! So many more chapters! And Poppy chapters! I'll be out of town at a conference until the end of next week. Just didn't want you to think I lost interest if you posted new chapters and I didn't review. I can read them on my crackberry but can't leave reviews, and I can't read smutty fiction on my work laptop, lol.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks for mentioning the conference! No, no -- you definitely don't want to be reading smutty fiction on your work laptop!!! LOLI am sure that Hermione was disappointed and rather put out. On the other hand, she does know he's kinda sorta messed up in some ways, so she can console herself with the thought that she doesn't have to get involved with that -- although she does love to go in and help people and fix things and tell people how things should be done, so that might have been appealing! LOL! (Ron & Lavender & Hermione was canon, though I haven't read that bit in quite a while -- I did do a sort of little riff on the RW LB HG thing in "Lovesick." Hermione was not displeased when Won-Won was embarrassed! haha!)I'm sure that Minerva is quite used to Mr Crabby Thundercloud making an appearance, but she took it as a sign that he might need to talk. Even if he didn't really want to. But she's better at that with him than Albus, who always manages to annoy Severus when he's in that sort of mood. Thanks much for the review! I hope the conference is interesting. :-)
So will you get Hermione a nice, cute, intelligent boyfriend?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
She will do just fine -- she'll definitely go for nice, cute, and intelligent. :-)
Well, well, well. Severus is learning more and more each day. I wonder if the 'new' Severus would think the 'old' Severus as a 'dunderhead...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I very much doubt that. A dunderhead isn't merely ignorant -- she or he is either a non-thinking, mentally lazy person, or someone who's willfully ignorant. The latter type often proceeds on their own assumptions whether the facts fly in their face or not. Then of course, there are the people who aren't particularly bright . . . But other than when Severus did things like willingly join a mob of murderous villains run by a sadistic, tyrannical megalomaniac (which has to be one of the most dunderheaded things someone could do, and which Severus himself thinks of as dunderheaded), he isn't a dunderhead. Ignorant of certain things, but a fast and determined learner, certainly no dunderhead! LOL!

Finally I found some time to catch up with ALVS! I still haven't read all Minerva fest entries, though ;o).
The date goes well, and they really have a great time, as it seems ;o). Very fitting that Poppy has these kind of fears, though.
Author's Response: I'm glad you're finding time to catch up on your reading, and that you enjoyed the start to their date. It does start Severus's holiday off well. :-)
Thanks for reviewing! Have fun catching up with the Minerva fest and the rest of LVS! :D
Severus the Sex God! Yum. He'll be positively dangerous now that he's learned Gareth's spell. Can't wait to see him put it into action. :)Though he's become remarkably uninhibited with Gareth, I noticed that his thoughts were mostly still with Poppy while having sex with Gareth. I wonder if that's just because she's been the most sexually satisfying partner he's had in his limited experience, or if it's because he's more emotionally involved with her than he realizes?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
One does wonder, doesn't one? :DOf course, since he's straight, thinking of a woman would be more arousing for him, too . . . it is an interesting phenomenon to note, however, that it is Poppy he thinks of . . .Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed it!
bum, bum, buuuuuuummm...... Who's that coming up the walk??? I bet I can guess! hehe
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Bet you can, too! Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed the chapter!
Oh no! Hurry up, get dressed. OMG! Well, this is a fun little cliffie. I'm salivating for the next chapter.I think you're quite a good writer. I love fanfiction and I've read some that weren't all that well written but had a fun idea. I usually can't stick with something very long if it's too badly written, too many misspellings or incorrect word usage or grammar. It distracts me from the story too much. I can imagine you doing other writing besides fanfiction.I wrote a fanfiction once. It was about the Alan Rickman character from Love Actually. It's very short and silly. I can't even stand to read it now. I can't imagine writing something for a site like this. I often think I want to write an HP story and I just can't get started. So it just seems amazing when I see these wonderful and well-written stories.Anyway, I know it could be a bit before you update but these update bookmarks are fantastic!!! I love getting the email notices. It's a nice little mental vacation when a really good story is updated.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, yes! Hurry up and gather up those clothes! Yikes! LOL!Glad you liked the cliffie! ;-)I'm very glad you enjoy my writing. I have always done a lot of writing in my work, both expository and argumentative, but fiction writing was new to me when I started writing fanfic a few years back. Well, that's not entirely true -- many years ago, when I was in my twenties, I used to do some fiction writing, but then I became convinced I was crap at it and quit without ever showing it to anyone but a couple family members. Anyway, everything else I write in life has to be pretty serious, so it's fun to write fanfic and let go -- a mental vacation, as you say!Yeah, I'm not sure when I'll update, either, and I know that at some point, there will be a short break, a little breather! Thanks very much for the review! (And I encourage you to write anything you feel moved to write -- it's fun, and you'll get better as you do it. :-))
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
Thanks for the encouragement. I've written research papers and a masters thesis that was a lot of fun but haven't written much fiction. A little fiction in one college course, I believe. I have tons of little ideas that I think would make good stories but can't seem to get started. I'm sure I'll write more eventually. Maybe during the summer when I'm not constantly slogging away making my kids do homework. Of course this is when I need mental vacations (brain holidays?! LOL) the most but this is when I read for my brain holidays. And listen to books on CD.
I wasn't expecting an update tonight but I'm glad you decided to post the next chapter. I've been thinking and rereading the lat chapter and something struck me so I think I'll share ... Snape's had a brutal life so far, if you stop to think about it, and for the first time in his life, he's learning what it means to give and receive love/pleasure, and all the other things normal people take for granted. If he seems like a glutton for sex/affection/whatever, it's because he's been starved for 39 years and now he's been shown a feast! It's no wonder that he's LEARNING from Gareth (a guy he trusts) and EXPLORING/PRACTICING with Poppy (a witch who finds him irresistable and who cares for him deeply). It's all rather sweet and I truly believe they only have Snape's best interests at heart. It seems to me, and maybe it's just me, that Snape is growing up rather quickly. He's gone from a sulky sort of chap who's obsessed with a girl he had a crush on in school to someone almost ready to take on adult relationships and start thinking of others and how he treats them. I do believe the old Snape is dying and a new one is emerging. woo hoo
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I wasn't expecting to update tonight, either. It was kind of a whim -- the chapter was ready, so I figured why not? :-)I think you're right -- he's undergone different rebirths at different times -- or perhaps just the one when he lived and had expected to die, but now he's able to take advantage of his new life. He certainly is disovering a rich new world of affection and human warmth that he had only ever seen as an outsider during his adult life, and really during his teens, too. And then his childhood was not exactly a happy one, either. So having two people like Gareth and Poppy in his life at this moment is something of a boon to him. We'll see where his new realizations take him! Thanks very much for the review! I'm glad you're still enjoying the fic and happy that Severus is being given the opportunity to grow beyond the wizard who threw temper tantrums -- and potions jars! -- and was locked so into his past and the consequences of his youthful actions.
Severus has some very childlike though processes. It makes me smile. He's very sweet and confused a lot of the time. Poor thing has suffered so many confusing sexual experiences that he's not completely processed before. I don't think I've ever read a series of stories like this that kept me so interested for so long. Often they sort of fizzle out as they go on and few are as long as this series.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you're enjoying the series of fics!
Severus's thought processes vary, of course, depending upon the subject. Right now, he's analyzing his thoughts, feelings, and experiences with regard to friendship, affection, and sexuality, all of which he's had little experience with -- and most of the experiences he's had in the past, socially and/or sexually, have not been satisfying, to put it mildly, let alone normal, and although he knows intellectually about friendship, mutuality, giving and receiving, etc., his nature has been pretty miserable so far and not conducive to developing relationships. Add to that the fact that he was a DE/spy for all of his adult life and had an abnormal existence, and he hasn't a clue, really, about friendship, love, and so forth. He does know he wants it, though, and he's been willing to take risks to try to have that kind of life -- and willing to try to change behaviors that he knows are counterproductive, even if they're long-engrained in him.
Too long a response, but I'm glad you're still enjoying the series and that you reviewed! Thanks!
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
That's it as a spy he is quite adept and can think in more complex ways in that venue but in terms of friendships and normal relationships he's just starting to really think about it and to have time and the capacity to work on it. He is very vulnerable and it's good there are so many trustworthy people he can consult. He had to just cut off normal feelings about friends and relationships for a very long time and probably wouldn't have been ready for a long time even without Lily's death and without voldemort's influence. He didn't have any good role-models for relationships, either, thanks to his parents.I don't mind long responses. :) I tend to go on a bit.
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I'm biding my time reading other stories and wondering why I'm reading them. LOL. I'm quite spoilt.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, I may just have to update quite soon, then! Wouldn't want you toooo bored! Or too spoiled, either, but there will be another slight break coming up, so maybe it's okay to spoil you a little bit. Especially since you're still enjoying it so much! :-)BTW, have you read either the shorter RaMverse fics (like the ones in what I call "Set Two" -- "Now is Perfect" and the "Cheering Charms" -- or the ones like "The Unsentimental Arithmancer" and "A Christmas for Aberforth" in Set One) or some of my non-RaMverse fics, like "Falling for Pomona" or "Minerva in Hogsmeade"? They may or may not be to your taste, but you could try them out.
So, I like that Severus is exploring his new found sexuality, but he's not going to be falling for Poppy now is he? I've been waiting for some good Severus/Hermione action to occur ;)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hermione's in the fic for a few pages in the next chappie.
Thanks for the review! Glad you're enjoying the explorations.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Whoops -- it's not the *next* chapter that Hermione shows up for a while, it's the one after that, the final one in Part Four.
Excellent as always.A few of us have commented on the HG/SS relationship. Like some of the others, I'm disappointed in SS's behavior toward HG, but this development process you've got SS going through is good for him, and makes for a damn fine story! I'm enjoying it, although in some ways, I wish SS would hurry up and grow up simply because envisioning a man in his late 30s/early 40s displaying the insecurities and behaviors of a teenager is weirding me out. I've never come across this kind of SS before.Ah, I take it all back. It's a wonderful story in part because it takes me out of my comfort zone.Brava!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Most of his insecurities and behaviors are internal ones -- not immediately obvious to others -- and others he's displaying because he feels comfortable enough with Poppy and Gareth and Minerva to express himself openly, something he's never experienced before.
Since this is Snape's story, it follows his days, not Hermione's -- which at this point are fairly boring, filled with Arithmantic equations and *genuine* teenage behavior, as opposed to Severus's kind of lop-sided exploratory teenage-like behavior. He's the primary character in the fic, with a few others being close-to-primary, depending on where we are in the fic (for example, Poppy, Gareth, Minerva, and sometimes Albus).
I'm glad you're enjoying the experience of being taken slightly out of your comfort zone! Brava to *you*!!!
Ouch. I wondered if this was coming, when he had to suppress the urge to say it earlier. Perhaps this is the balancing point, where they will have to start distancing themselves, or acknowledge their feelings. Either way, I suspect it's only going to get painful from here. He's getting to be more and more emotionally high maintenence, and surely Poppy also needs some reassurance and validation?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm sure that Poppy does need reassurance and validation, and that she's going through a number of mixed emotions at this point.
It will be a bit rocky, but we'll see how it all goes . . .
Thanks for the review! I appreciate it!
AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!Severus and Poppy sure seem to be having a grand time and I'm glad, for both of them. Severus finally seems to be enjoying being alive and giving/receiving warmth and love from another. And despite being with Gareth in earlier chapters, I think he's fascinated more by Poppy. He just needed Gareth to break down his barriers so he could fully give himself to Poppy or some other witch of his choosing. I see him as a young teenager who's just discovered the joys of being intimate for the first time. I loved the roleplaying bit with Poppy and Snape. That was fun and hot. I think these two are going to have lots of fun together, regardless of how long their "fling" lasts. They're comfortable and warm enough with each other to let go and have a bit of fun in the process. That's great. It's nice to see Severus growing more comfortable, both with himself and with others. He's learning what he likes and doesn't necessarily like and all with someone who truly loves him in her own way and who values him and respects his past. It's certainly a lot different from all those prostitutes and Bella.Thank you so much for putting so much time and energy into this story. I hope you know there are lots of us who are enjoying the story and who are rooting for PPSS!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! There have been moments when I thought I should just not bother with it any longer, so it's nice to hear you're enjoying the fic still -- and that you are enjoying seeing Severus and Poppy together.Severus's relationship and intimacy with Poppy is certainly very different from his early experiences, after which he essentially dropped out of life, aside from his spying and his snarling at students, and so forth. I think he's finally beginning to enter a more mature relationship stage, though he's not aware of it yet.I'm glad you saw both the fun and the warmth between the two. I hoped that it would come across that way. Thanks for the review! I appreciate it. :-)
Well, Poppy's intuition was correct and shed quite a bit of light and explanation for Severus's sexual behavior.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Minerva didn't confirm Poppy's suppositions -- though of course she hadn't forgotten what Severus had told her -- since it's Severus's business to share with people he chooses to share it with. It does partially explain why he had such narrow views of sexuality before this -- aside from his having to remain aloof, etc., as a DE/DE-spy.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It no doubt made it easier for Severus to tell Poppy about it that he had told Gareth about it just the previous day, though it was still harder for him to admit to her than it had been to tell Gareth -- and you no doubt remember Gareth's reaction. It helped Severus to have had that reaction from him, rather than have him freak out.
Great chapters! Poor Severus, he's definitely thinking through everything, perhaps over-thinking, but it's inevitable when trying to understand one's self; his fears, though, feel very realistic. I'm glad Severus seemed to accept "fantasy" as a thing in itself; I think fantasies can be important alongside "reality," as long as they don't impinge in a negative way. The upcoming chapters look just as tantalizing, if not more so, than the last few; looking forward to them!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you liked it -- and that you're looking forward to the coming chapters! Thanks very much for your review! I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
Wow! Another great chapter, though I'm not surprised. I loved it the first time I read it and even more now. Great polishing you've done here.I don't know why but I really like Gareth and Snape in this sort of situation. I think it shows a vulnerability in Snape's personality and a warmth in Gareth's. Despite what Snape did to his mom and the Death Eaters did to his dad, Gareth is willing to open his arms and his heart to Snape to help him heal, emotionally as well as physically. I believe these two are going to become great friends! And I have to say that I'm looking forward to reading the upcoming polished chapters as well!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you liked it. :-) I've worked on smoothing it and polishing it, so I'm glad it works for you!Yes, the fact that Gareth is who he is and the fact that he suffered personally from the result of Severus's actions and those of other DEs, means that his acceptance and warmth mean even more to Severus. Their friendship will continue to grow, and it will help Severus to open up to new, more open -- and warmer -- relationships with other people in his life. I think you'll like the polish to the upcoming chapters and how Severus's life progresses from there. Thanks for the reviews! I appreciate them!
Well, that was a fun chapter! It was great that Hermione kept referring to it as a third date. I think she knew going into it that she wanted to "get a little closer ..." tee hee.Their "argument" over money sure made it sound like they were a couple going out on a date, and not a first one, either. Off to read the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, she wanted it to feel different from their previous friendly outings. ;)Glad you liked it!
