Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Severus's conversation with Sinistra's portrait and his speech at the dedication were very touching. I don't remember that part of DD and would like to go back and re-read it now. You captured the centaurs' odd sort of indirect conversational style nicely, and I feel for Firenze's sadness and longing for a loved one lost. It makes some sense that Sinistra, with her love and knowledge of astronomy, would connect on a personal level with Firenze. What has Severus been up to in the Forest? What dead is he talking to, and why is he seeking his peace there?? If this is something from DD, I totally don't remember. Or are you just teasing us with a new mystery?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Just teasin' ya! LOL! But the mystery won't last long -- the next chapter will answer it for you. It is, however, rooted in events in DD.Glad you liked Firenze's centaur speech. :)The scene in DD w/ Firenze and Sinistra is at the end of the chapter 25, "At Elbow and Foot." The mention of Sinistra and Severus taking care of the Slytherins during the extraordinary curfew occurs in 27, "Shall not die windily," about 2/3 of the way through. A lot happens in that chapter, so I'll find it and copy it here.Found it:"Lunch in Slytherin House was peculiar. Again, Zabini and his group sat together and were nearly totally silent, and there was a clear distance between Zabini’s Slytherins and the rest of the House. It was as though they existed in completely different spaces, neither group acknowledging the existence of the other. Sinistra had joined him in his baby-sitting duties, and he was careful to thank her, and from her smile, he believed that she knew he was thanking her for more than just helping him watch the Slytherins eat their lunch."
What a place to stop. I can't wait for the next chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
A teeny, tiny bit of a cliffie can be good for the soul, don't you think? Muwahaha! (That's my attempt at an evil laugh. I'm not very experienced! lol!)I hope to have the next chapter up sometime early next week, so hopefully the suspense won't be too bad! Thanks for the review,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! Glad you liked the chapter!
I chose a random chapter somewhere right before Severus's collapse to start my re-read of this and was reminded why I hadn't done so before...I couldn't stop w/ just one chapter! On the second time through I can spot details I missed, or gave insufficient attention, the first time, like Minerva's and Melina's exchanges. Will have to limit my visits to this site til after my major exams in January . . . .
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi, esoterica! Have fun studying for your exams!I'm glad you enjoyed your reread of some of the first chapters, and I hope you can schedule occasional breaks for a chapter or two now and then -- but not so much as to interfere with your studying! Thanks for the review! I'm glad you liked Minerva and Melina's exchanges. Later!
Interesting chapter. I liked how you brought the portrait to life as it were.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks!
Real life caused me to get 4 chapters behind and now that I am caught up I can’t wait for more. I love the way Snape is evolving to enjoy true friendships. Longing for the contact even thought he is still a bit wrong footed at times it’s a growth process that gets glossed over by a lot of people. Now I’m waiting with baited breath for the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi! I'm glad you found time to catch up and enjoyed it! I'm glad you like the way that Severus is evolving in fits and starts. He'll have some hiccups and some jump-starts and some detours along the way, but he'll keep moving forward.I will likely post the next chapter later today. I just have to go over it one last time before I post it.Thanks for the review!
This was so beatiful and sad and also optimistic. I loved how you wrote Firenze ( and I am so in love with your Severus - in all your stories)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, thank you so much! I'm very glad you liked it. And, of course, that you liked the way I wrote Firenze. I wanted to get him "right." I'm happy you're in love with this Severus! <*insert blushing emoticon here!*>Thanks for the review!
Was it really only a few chapters ago that I was wishing Severus could be comfortable engaging in pleasant conversation? I know it's more difficult in a party situation, but I think it's kinda cute that he's marvelling at the pleasure of just having a normal, pleasant conversation with his collegues. In giving and receiving courtesy. And Moody! That conversation might have been harder for him than for Severus. It takes a certain kind of courage to sincerely apologize for the wrong you've done another, and with no expectation that the apology will be accepted or even received. Given that Severus has been on the wrong side of the wand himself, I wonder if he appreciates the parallel? I'm sure he was too angry and surprised to respond, but I wonder if he will get past it and develop some kind of relationship with Mad Eye?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
His life was so messed up for so long, even just ordinary conversation becomes meaningful for him, you're right. It's very hard to apologize for something that was as terribly wrong as what Moody did to Severus, you're right about that, too. As to Severus and whether he appreciates the parallel, I don't think he can just yet. Moody and Severus have more in common than either would likely recognize themselves at this point, butperhaps they might develop some kind of relationship at some time in the future -- stranger things have happened, after all! Just look at Severus & Gareth's friendship. :)Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed the chapter!
I'm glad Severus is starting to come around. He does deserve better than what he was given by life. The war is over, time to relax and have some fun.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, he does deserve better, and he's been earning it. He has his own hurdles to overcome, but he does have the freedom to do so now. Thanks!
:) those two REALLY need to move on with their little romance. like flirting. severus snape flirting!! lol that would be something to see :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus Snape learning to flirt -- glad you'd like to see that! LOL! Thanks for reviewing!
somehow i knew he would win if the teachers were voted on. :D its the blue eyes. gotta be lol
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
The blue eyes sure couldn't have hurt his chances! ;)Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
I can imagine Severus being at loose ends after spying for so many years.I'm still enjoying this story!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I'm glad. :-)
fab as always!and as for Mr Brett - the definative holmes unquestioningly. :)thanks as always for sharing Linds
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks you.
I really liked the teen aged server with the hard luck story. He added depth and interest to the chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you liked O'Fallon -- we get more references to him much later on in the story, so I'm glad you noticed him! I am also glad you though it added some depth to the scene! It's fun, too, I think, to see the way that Severus interacts with the various different kinds of characters, so I like giving him new opportunities to run into different sorts of people! haha! Thanks for the review!
Snape's Slytherins have their own notepaper and logo? There must be some interesting things going on behind the scenes, there. I hope we get to find out more about it.
Severus seemed to enjoy drawing out his story of the costume party, giving his audience little snippets of information so they would ask him for more. I wonder if his jealousy over Hermione's and Gareth's playfulness might inspire him to try a little playfulness, himself?
The duelling with Flitwick sounds fun. I'm looking forward to it!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He did enjoy having an audience to appreciate his having won, and he was also feeling oddly shy about admitting that he had enjoyed winning, though he did. Severus's ability to engage in playfulness will most definitely improve! If I ever get around to it, I have a Blaise Zabini, many years post-Hogwarts story rattling around in my head. He is off doing his thing in the wizarding word, building his sphere of influence and taking advantage of whatever he can to do that -- just in an ambitious way, not in a "Dark" way. Don't know if that will ever happen, though. Ah, yes, duelling with Filius! Fun fun! Thanks for the review!
Response from Riposto (Reviewer)
"Hufflepuff and Slytherin, what a combination, he thought. He couldn’t imagine what had drawn the two to each other, unless his wife enjoyed his devotion and knew she wouldn’t have to work too hard for it." While waiting for you to finish whatever you're doing in RL and post Ch 78, I'm re-reading the story to look for all the, um, significant events I've forgotton or missed, and I had to laugh at this line. Wouldn't have to work too hard for it? LOL.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you had a nice laugh there! That is one of the little things that totally slips by on first reading -- quite understandably so! Glad you're enjoying the re-read! RL should let me post sometime the last week of May, I hope! (I'm mostly having fun. :-))
I have particularly enjoyed the lead up to this party. The oppertunity presented in fancy dress is an amazing one but is often done horribly badly. This was, however, as perfectly pitched as always.oh - and Jamie Brett as Sherlock Holmes(!)roflit's all about the in jokes :)hope you're well and that you get the chance to continue to post oftenLinds
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Jeremy Brett is my favorite Holmes, so back in DD, I almost named the Ravenclaw "Jeremy Brett," but I changed it a bit so I could give Jamie Brett a bit of independence from his namesake! I'm glad you caught the reference. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. It was fun to write.Life is okay, and I'm doing pretty well -- I hope I'll be able to post again soon.
I think the party turned out quite well.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus at least didn't have a miserable time! LOL! Thanks for the review! :)
Lots of fun reading this chapter, but I think I reviewed twice...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You reviewed "Fancy Dress," but not "Ghostly Halloween," so you didn't review twice, so no worries! Thanks!
Another wonderful chapter. It's fun to hear the costume choices of the staff and students. Severus had me cracking up with his "Gods, save me from the munchkins" line. I can hear him saying that under his breath. Suzy really is a hoot and she's got it BAD!!!Too bad Albus didn't win the contest, but if he couldn't then I'm happy Severus did. I'm very pleased Albus and Minerva were able to share the last dance and based on what happened in DD, I'm sure Poppy didn't mind sharing dances with Albus, wink wink!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Glad you liked that! Nope, Poppy didn't mind dancing with Albus at all. He didn't mind, either! Poor Severus, with his adoring miniature "Spicy Girl" -- glad you enjoyed that!It was almost a tie between Albus and Severus, but given Severus's usual, unvarying black and white look and the fact that he actually was in something that was a little bit of a stretch for him, he probably deserved to win. Besides, he needed it more than Albus would. Thanks for the review!
Response from HogwartsDuo (Reviewer)
Hmmm, somehow I don't think that Poppy and Albus enjoyed the dance in quite the same way, if ya know what I mean. lol
Ooo, I'm glad Severus is still thinking about Hermione. I'm going to have to ration myself to a couple of chapters of this per day or I'll get nothing done at all. And, as always, your Minerva is lovely.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, no trying to read it all at once! You'll enjoy it just as much in smaller servings and you'll still get stuff done!I'm glad you like Minerva here. She's in the story a lot, so you'll see more of her. Thanks for reviewing! It's good to see you again!
rapidly falling arches, oh my, poor man. Now I worry how Severus will do all his patrolling with those arches fallíng. It is nice to follow Severus' gradually enjoying life, the women, the food and even some dance. Lovely and very funny chapter
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, yes, patrolling would be a problem, wouldn't it? lol! Guess he'll have to seek medical attention! Glad you enjoyed Severus's foray into socibility! Thanks for reviewing!
Poor awkward, repressed, Severus! Only he would find dancing with friends and collegues so painful. I'm not sure if it was funny or just very sad that he cannot tolerate any hint of sexuality. Well, at least Minerva made him practice his interpersonal skills, and didn't let him skulk in the corners. Hopefully it will get easier for him over time, and he will find it perfectly natural to engage in pleasant conversation at parties and to ask witches to dance!Little Suzie is an adorable chatterbox. I could picture her in my mind wobbling around in her Spicy Girls costume and making eyes at her hero.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus does make a breakthrough in his level of comfort with sexuality/sensuality, butafter he's gotten over a few other hurdles first.Yes, little Suzie just jabbers on and gazes adoringly at Severus! haha! Glad you like her! Thanks for reviewing!
This was an especially fun chapter to read. It was great to hear what each person had chosen as their costume. And I looved the bit about Minerva giving Albus a private dance party as Mata Hari. Let's hope he doesn't have the same problem getting out of his costume as he did getting into it. tee hee. Then again, the banishing charm is useful from time to time. lolWow! I can't believe Francis Flint is a ghost. He was always too good for Valerianna, not that that's saying much. It's so sad, though, that he's waited for her for twenty years and he knew nothing of what happened. Can't wait for the next chapter to be posted!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter -- and the prospect of Minerva's little private party! lolYes, he was, and she did need him, though she learned too late that sometimes, her push-push-push was wrong, and that she should have listened to Francis. Poor Francis! Thanks for the review!
you DID turn his eyes blue!! yay! and i never would have thought of the tan. i really need to read R.A.M. there are so many references to it that its piqued my interest. :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yeppers! Blue-eyed Snape! Who would have thunk it? LOL!Resolving a Misunderstanding is the first fic I wrote, and second-best fic (after DD), IMO, and it's still my overall favorite, but it's long. However, I know that a lot of people enjoyed it, and there's a ton of backstory for all my fics in it. And you get to see Melina as a little girl and a young woman. :D I think you would probably enjoy it.
Love the various costumes (and on whom they were paired) and, as always, your adept character interactions; every part has been a very pleasurable read! I also really liked Severus' interactions with Vector; it seemed inevitable that, now that things have eased for Severus, he'd experience some kind of desire, and it's nice to see that return, despite past circumstances. Always looking forward to more :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! This story really is about the character interactions and relationships and such, which is nice for me, since I enjoy writing dialogue. It was fun coming up with the costumes for everyone.Yep, good that some of Severus's libido is returning! Let's see where that goes! lolThanks for the review! More will be forthcoming!
T.E. Lawrence? i guess he could look like him, but the eyes are all wrong. will he glamour them blue? :D lol severus in a sheik.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yeah, he knows that there's something not quite right with the look, but he gets some help with that. :)Thanks for the review!
