New Chapter for A Long Vernal Season
A Long Vernal Season
MMADfan1,058 Reviews | 7.24/10 (1,058 Ratings, 0 Likes, 88 Favorites )
Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
I'm glad you've decided to post this story to TPP, even though I've already read it over at Our Mirror of Erised. I think it's very interesting how you're easing Severus back into a somewhat normal life and showing him with his ups and downs in adjusting.Looking forward to these chapters and the ones on OMoE. Cheers, the GLM
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It won't all be posted over at OMoE, though, not until it's complete. Those were just . . . previews! ;-) I'm planning to stop w/ the end of Part Two over there, but post all of it to TPP.Severus is easing into his life, which will have a few bumps before he can begin to discover how to live it, as you know! Thanks for the review! Greatly appreciated! :-)
Yay! I'm glad you're writing the sequel. I'm looking forward to it.

Hey there,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! Good to see you! Hope you enjoy the story! :-)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
And I forgot to mention that the first chapter will be up tomorrow, since the prologue's so short.
So plsased to have a chance to read Severus' story! Thank you for continuing with this.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I hope you enjoy his story! :-)
You know you've got me hooked! I'm very much looking forward to reading and reviewing the upcoming chapters! You have a way of writing the characters that makes me believe they're actual people with real ups and downs in life, true triumphs and defeats. I love that in a story!CFP from the GLM
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanik you! I hope everyone enjoys the story. Severus will certainly have his ups and downs in this story, though hopefully the "ups" will be more frequent!Oh, yes, and CFR!
Oh! I have been waiting for this one ever since I finished DD... If that story is any indication, this one will be pretty good.Looking forward to the next chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I hope you enjoy this one, too. It is different in mood and structure from DD, but I think it's essentially a fun story with lots of nice twists and turns to it.The next chapter will be up on Sunday, since the Prologue is very short.
Glad you are back with a new story. I hope it will be a long one, I know it will be an interesting one - you are a gifted writer
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hey! Thank you! Yep, it will be a long one. It will be longer than Death's Dominion but shorter than Resolving a Misunderstanding. The Prologue begins Part One, which is the longest of the sections (going by number of chapters), and there are several parts to it.I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for the note!
Where to begin ... First of all, let me say that I LOVED the last few chapters. It's nice to see Severus finally experiencing life to the fullest. He's been deprived of a normal young adulthood for so long that it's time he opened up and decided what HE wants and needs out of life.I have to admit that I have never been a fan of slash stories. I simply choose not to read them, but if the situation presents itself in a story (as it does in this instance) I will not shy away from it, nor will I flame the author for listening to the guidance of his or her muse. I simply trust that the person telling me the story has a purpose for the actions in the fanfic. Having said that, I honestly think the situation between Gareth and Severus was a natural progression. Do I see it becoming a lifelong love affair? No. But do I see it as a loving expression of friendship and affection? Absolutely! Do I want Hermione in the picture? Nope, can't say I want that either. I think Severus and Hermione would make great friends but not bed partners. I think she has a lot of growing up to do and I think Severus needs someone who has already experienced the world and life and can handle his new freedom.I, like many others, have read the chapters and also the accompanying reviews. I have to disagree with some of your other reviewers in their assessments, though I acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I don't believe Gareth forced anything on Severus. This is a man who learned how to put his own feelings aside and to do many horrible acts (cutting off an old witch's arm wasn't exactly the stuff dreams are made of) and has done many more horrific deeds in his lifetime. I don't believe, for one moment, that Severus would allow himself to be pressured into any situtation, sexual or otherwise, now that's he's free from Voldemort's hold. And given his responses to the massage and then the intimacy he experienced with Gareth, I'd say he was enjoying the intimacy. If Gareth had made him feel anything other than wonderful, I doubt Severus would have allowed him the chance to "bugger" him or even offer to take care of him with oral pleasure. It just goes against the very nature of Snape to be bullied into doing anything. Now, at the end of your chapter, you raise an interesting little idea in the mind of your readers. Did I read correctly that Severus was mentally comparing Minerva (who we all know is unattainable thanks to our dear, sexy Albus) and Poppy??? Hmm, I think Gareth planted an unintentional seed in Snape's weary brain. lolAs always, I'm looking forward to more of the story!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, last question first -- Severus was definitely contemplating Minerva's relative attractiveness and unattainability, but when he was thinking about Poppy, he was wondering how she was similar to Anitra, and thinking that if Anitra were like Poppy, she was an attractive witch. I may just have to ask you to proofread/beta Part Four for me, now! You did give me the courage to go ahead and start posting LVS to an archive -- and it doesn't sound like you'd mind getting a bit of a glimpse at the next section. You're right that even though Severus is emotionally stunted and hasn't had a chance for normal relationships, he also is strong enough to say "no" and to leave a situation he's not comfortable with. He did, after all, leave Bella -- and at a much younger age, when he was more vulnerable, and when he had other motivations for maintaining a relationship with her (power, position in the DE circle, etc.) -- and he betrayed Voldemort. Severus may not completely understand or be comfortable in either his friendships in general or in his relationship with Gareth in particular, but he does recognize that his new friendships are good things in his life, not like the relationships he had before. He enjoys the intimacy and is discovering how to be intimate with someone. As you say, he's been liberated and can now discover what he wants and needs in life -- and can discover what he has to give others, as well.Anyway, I'm glad you liked it and you're looking forward to more. Thanks for the review!
Oh please don't leave me hanging at this. I know it's been quite a while since you posted this but I just now binge-read it over the last couple of days and I neeeeeeeeed to know what's gonna happen. Please tell me there's more to it sitting somewhere on your computer or on another website or something because I might die if I never find out how the story ends.
This is a fabulous piece of writing and I enjoyed every second of my binge-reading experience. Thank you so much for taking me to another world and I really hope you will end my suffering and give me (and all of tpp) a chance find out how the story ends.
Love, Lynn
Hmm. I'd never thought that Voldie's death could leave anything but joy, relief, and survivor's guilt. But Ginny's guilt, or whatever it is she's dealing with, is more interesting. Well, I've always found the Ginny-Riddle connection fascinating to dig into and read about. And what about Severus? I don't really see him and Poppy keeping their hands off one another, and equally I don't see him calling off his thing with Gareth (I've really liked reading them though). I'm not sure what you're doing with Hermione; is this story going to be as long as RaM? Because my head almost exploded with the slow plot unrolling and the angst, despite the fact that I liked it too much to stop reading. This fic's better though- there's so much else going on between the characters emotionally that the very slow pace of their relationship isn't going to drive me mad. Then again, I've been operating under the assumption that this is a HG/SS fic. Perhaps I'm mistaken...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Ginny's guilt is very mixed up, and she's having trouble sorting out all her emotions. She even feels guilty about having nightmares about feeling guilty about Voldie's death, so it's good that she's finally going to have some help sorting it all out.RaM was my first-ever fic, it also spanned far more years than this one does. I think that DD is probably the best of my RaMverse fics, and tied with RaM as my favorite, since RaM got the fics started and it's ADMM. This will be longer than AAoL & DD, but shorter than RaM.You may have noticed that Hermione doesn't show up in the fic as much as Poppy, Gareth, Minerva, or even Albus, except as she appears in Severus's mind and thoughts. Thanks for the reviews! I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
Aah! Severus! Oh, that boy is taking his lessons too well! He really shouldn't be messing about with Poppy that way, and really especially not when he's trying to date Hermione. Perhaps this story ought to be called "How Sevvie gets his groove back," with all his learning how to flirt and seduce...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, he's a very fast learner and really learns his lessons well! And when he sets his mind at learning how to do something and mastering it, well . . . he is Severus Snape, after all! LOL!"How Sevvie gets his groove back": I like that one -- a great subtitle!
Oh dear. Poor little guys. Severus is all confused with his suddenly (slightly) flexible heterosexuality, and Mc Gonagall's been ever so slightly taken advantage of, albeit willingly. Messy, but hopefully our boys are grown up enough to handle it. Also... you really can't have anal sex without lubricant. Really. But aside from that, I like the very human feel to their intimacy. It's not all fluffy marvelous sex- it's two guys, getting off, not entirely sure how the other one's doing- dunno. It just strikes me as very real.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Um, really, you can. It's far preferable with, of course, and a good deal easier. And Gareth used the Unguo spell. (No further comment on that!) I'm glad you found it very real! :-)
This was an incredibly intense chapter to read. I'm not disappointed at the lack of Gareth/Snape- the buildup for Snape/Hermione has been too long coming for me to not want to see it happen- but there's no doubt that this was also really erotic. Gareth... intrigues me. He was interesting before, but now even more so. I wish I knew him. Actually, I think I might know someone a lot like him in some regards. Hard to tell though, since he's only an intermittent character and he only see him with Snape. I'm not a really regular-updatey type, but I have been enjoying reading a great deal, and I'll definitely finish this tale.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi! Thanks, I'm very glad you're enjoying the fic. :-) I hope you continue to enjoy it!
Oh good on you, Snape! I think he handled Ginny's distress extremely well! Wow.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Not bad at all -- he can be proud of himself for that. :-)Thanks for the review!
Okay, so the first part of this chapter had me cracking up! Poor Severus having to endure someone playing footsie with him and it's not even Poppy ... gasp!" ... She was trying to play footsie with me under the table.”“That is inappropriate . . . unless certain precautions have been taken,” Minerva said.Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like Minerva has engaged in a game of footsie at the staff table! She seemed rather quick to imply that it was okay if one had taken precautions. tee hee. I think there's a story there! It's truly amazing how much Severus had matured from the beginning of the story. He's actually trying to make a difference in the life of someone who needs a friend and I think it's very sweet. He was certainly very professional with Ginny and that was nice instead of his normal snarky side! And I think he handled her proposition very well. Can't say the outcome would have been the same if that had been Poppy's hand on his knee or her foot rubbing his ankle. Then again ... different circumstances. Thanks for updating so quickly for us!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed that bit at the beginning! He did think he was being quite restrained, under the circumstances . . . LOL!Yes, he did well with Ginny. In previous years, it never would have occurred to him to see where she was going unless he just wanted to catch her "up to no good." He was feeling at his best at that moment and was able to do his best, as a result. Thanks for the review! Glad you liked it. (And there was a bit of a contrast in the way in which he handled the two different uninvited touches, wasn't there? Depending on the person & circumstances.)TTFN!
I'm finally back to read some more of your work. I would have sooner, but I had major problems with my laptop and finally got a new one last week. I found out today that you started the sequel. I'm so happy to read it. I like how you started the intro to this story with Severus coming back to Hogwarts and seeing the memorial for Sinistra and the place where Harry defeated Voldemort before going up to the castle. I'm glad that Severus was happy to see Minerva when he entered the castle; it shows that he has forgiven her or has started to. Now I will read the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hey there! Welcome back,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I hate having computer problems, so you have my sympathy.I'm glad you like the start of the story. I hope you enjoy the path that Severus takes in his new life here!BTW, there's another story, a four-chaptered fic called "The Sorting of Suzie Sefton," that goes with LVS, but you probably won't want to read it until after you've finished reading Part One of LVS (that's through Chapter 16). or at least through Chapter 12, or else you'll encounter spoilers. It's good to see you! Thanks for the review!
I love this chapter – his conversation with Ginny was so touching. It's obvious how much he's matured, and how his own new friendships and relationships have allowed him to open up and reach out to someone else in need. Though I would be interested to find out, specifically, why he joined the Death Eaters – but I understand that he was there to support Ginny, and to do that effectively, he needed to keep the conversation focused on her, not him.Poor Ginny :( I wanna give her a hug.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Aw, thanks! I'm glad you loved it!Severus talked some about that with Gareth in the chapter "A Tour of the Past," and he's talked about it elsewhere, as well, but when he spoke to Gareth, this is what he said:“I wanted to be superior.” Severus snorted. “I believed I was superior. I thought that becoming a Death Eater would confirm my superiority, that it would show everyone. I thought that Dark Magic was more powerful than any other and that it would protect me from my enemies. My enemies were enemies of the Dark Lord. I was angry with the world, and I wanted revenge and power. It seemed all to fit. But I just grew more disgusted with myself.”I think he talked about it or thought about it in DD, too, somewhere.I'm glad you liked his conversation with Ginny. He has come a long way in a year. In September, he might have thought that someone should talk to the girl, but he'd think she'd survive even if no one did, and he certainly wouldn't imagine talking to her himself. But as you say, he's learned a lot from his own friendships, and being able to reach out and help someone else, particularly without any instigation from anyone else to do so, shows how far he's come. And you're right -- not only was he naturally disinclined to discuss his own membership in the DEs, but he knew that there had to be something behind her question other than curiosity about him and he kept the focus of the conversation on her. That was good of him, too -- rather than just get angry for having been asked about that and reminded of it, or assuming that she was indicting him by asking it, he was able to stop and think about the question and not just react. He was at his best in those moments in the stadium, and he acted as a good teacher and deputy headmaster should, but still Snape-ishly. ;-)Thanks for the review! I appreciate it!
Ugh!Yes, I really am a real life Sarah Duffy. Always wanting what I can't have...no clue that I can't actually get it. Ouch. Poor Sarah. I hope she's resilient like me too.Except if that had actually been me, I would have said," Oh yeah baby, mmmm, raw meat!" and it wouldn't have been my foot on his ankle. It would have been my hand on his .... Oh dear. What has gotten into me this morning?Annnywho... Great chapter! Keep 'em coming!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oooo, almost got into some naughtiness there, didn't we? LOL!Poor Sarah! She'll bounce back, I'm sure. Thanks for the review!
Response from Unknown RoSe (Reviewer)
Santa brings better presents when I'm on the naughty list!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Those must be some interesting presents! ;-)
If Poppy could have seen Severus as he talked to Ginny, she would have fallen hopelessly in love w/ him. He's come so far, and has compassion, and insight, and judgment . . . . and he cares about a Weasley! :-)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
". . . and he cares about a Weasley!" Yes, he has come far, though it's still hard for him. He will have his "moments" in the future!I'm glad you liked that -- and Poppy certainly does value the characteristics you mentioned, and you're probably right about her reaction . . . Thanks for the review! I'm glad to see you!
Response from esoterica1693 (Reviewer)
From now til Jan 8th is my Hell Month. Then I return to the land of the living . . . right now thru 22 Dec is regular schoolwork finals, then, 4-8 Jan is Ordination Exams. Then all the hard stuff will be over and it will be just taking stuff I want to take in JanTerm and spring semester.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
What a lovely way to spend Advent and the rest of the Christmas season! Good luck with it!
Response from esoterica1693 (Reviewer)
Yes, rather! It's more back to the olden days of a purple, pentitential Advent, the Four Last Things, apocalypses, etc.!! None of this hopeful expectation, sarum blue, gaudete pink wishy washy stuff! :-)))) (Advent's always been my favorite season, but this year I wish someone could just knock me out and wake me up on I Epiphany!)
I got such a great chuckle out of the conversation at the breakfast table. Poor Minerva suffering from bad pasties. tsk tsk. Good thing the cure for bad pasties is also the same thing for a hangover. lol. Bless Albus' heart for thinking ahead.Guess that means Albus and Minerva will be camping out in Snape's dungeons for two nights. That should be interesting. And good grief. Hermione took that loss rather personally and she was very quick to call Snape out on offering a little advice. She needs to take a breath and calm down a little. haha.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Three nights, actually, since the point spread was so large. Hee!I think Hermione is stinging still from their conversation a couple nights before. She did take it personally and she wasn't at all happy about Severus betting on Hufflepuff, was she?Isn't that a great coincidence, though, that the Hangover Potion could fix the problems caused by those bad pasties? haha! Yes, Albus tries to take good care of her -- and she of him. :-)Thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm glad he sort of broke it off with Hermione. He's not ready for a serious relationship.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He's certainly not as ready for a relationship with Hermione as he'd thought he was. Not that he really thought he was ready, but it sort of was beginning to happen, anyway. Thanks for the review.
They had to win, Severus can't wear red! ~LOL~
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
What an indignity that would have been! Glad you liked it.
I just love the rivalry between Snape and McGonagall!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's something they both enjoy, too, though we haven't had much opportunity to see it here. Glad you liked it!
"He nodded. 'I always try to pee in toilets. I don’t like peeing in the woods or into a bottle.'"OMG, how adorable is that?!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Glad you liked that line.
Oh m'gosh, that was priceless! I loved the party chatter with Albus drinking a Screaming Orgasm and then the banter between Poppy and Snape about Orgams and Screws. tee hee. I found myself chuckling out loud. And lest I forget ... the STEAM in the corridor. Wowzers. Those two really are hot together and it was fun to see them behaving a bit like horny teenagers who couldn't wait. The more I read of the PPSS pairing, the more I love it. It will never take the place of ADMM in my heart, but they're right up there near the top. lol
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Ah yes, party fun! And post-party fun! And all that steam, too -- I'm glad you enjoyed it and are loving the PPSSness! Those two are certainly not very good at going back to being "just colleagues," are they? Thanks for the review! (Oh, and several chapters hence, there will be some ADMMness that I think you will enjoy -- it's in there for purposes of the overall direction of the story, but I did make it rather lengthy, so hopefully it will tide you and other ADMM fans over until the next RaMverse ADMM-centric fic comes along. LOL!)
Response from HogwartsDuo (Reviewer)
THAT'S GREAT NEWS ABOUT ADMM GOODNESS! I'm beginning to fear I'm living in draught conditions! sniff sniff Hugs, the GLM ... with an emphasis on "G"
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Ah, but at least in addition to the "G," you're also appreciative! That makes all the difference!
Response from HogwartsDuo (Reviewer)
Yes, well I think if you're going to the trouble of creating a wonderful HP universe in which things make total sense (points to JKR's version and walks away shaking head in puzzlement) and is well written and obviously well planned, I can at least take the time to let ya know I'm appreciative! lol I really do enjoy the stories you write for our enjoyment.
he's gonna get in trouble with poppy
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'll have to refresh my memory of that chapter! I'm curious about that conclusion. :-)
