Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Exhausted at the moment, will write more of a review soon - but i'll leave you with this - I found this chapter very interesting and entertaining - and for some reason, loved seeing Melina here. And as always, I enjoy your Flitwick! I also appreciate the sudden, horrific feeling of doom and guilt that came over Snape - I know that feeling and I think you captured it well.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it -- and seeing Melina again! Don't take a Hufflepuff lightly! ;)
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Oh no, I would never - as you well know that is my second House - I was 98% Gryffy, but 92% Huffie - I could go either way really - and loyalty is paramount with Huffies!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, now that Melina has taken an interest in Severus and he's become one of "hers," she's very protective of him. She also knows what he's suffered, and she knows that without his help, Quin would still be living a partial life.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
And I'm sure it doesn't hurt that her aunt and uncle think the world of Snape, either? Gosh - it has been a while since I dipped into the RamVerse... so much is coming back.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Indeed, and that he has become one of her cousin's closest friends, too.Of course, if she thought there were a good reason for the report, it wouldn't matter how close any of her relatives were to him. She'd do the right thing as she saw it. But she figures that a report like that could potentially harm him, and having a Prior Incantato performed on his wand could remind him of his criminal past and drag him down.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
I imagine dueling practice would be much like fencing practice, or boxing - people are going to get hurt - no two ways around it - I did find it interesting that Flitwick got the bends from zero gravity - I had the bends once in my life - a very mild case - due to diving and not decompressing correctly - and its extreamly painful - but I never considered having nitrogen issues with zero gravity - I suppose it would be an issue - but then I've never been in such a situation - still its an intersting idea and slant on the concept. Good job being original and interesting! Which, of course, I would expect nothing less!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's the sudden change -- or too-fast change -- in atmospheric pressure that does it, and Severus's spell that created the zero-g also brought the atmospheric pressure down to near nothing, which is what caused his bends. With a bit of work and a little more thought about what he wanted the spell to accomplish and what he wanted it not to do, Severus could refine it so that Filius was merely floating "weightless" but without the bends -- and without suddenly shooting up and being plastered to the ceiling! LOL!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Since Severus is not a diver, or space traveler - it fits that he wouldn't think of these consequences - if you've never been in an environment where pressures and gravity change so much, its completely alien to you. I know the whole concept of nitrogen building up in my blood stream and weightlessness during diving was something I couldn't relate to until I experienced it.By the way - when I was sick with the bends - I did not get treatment (didn't realize what it was until it was nearly over) I had a wicked headache, extream dizziness and lots of vomiting - it was much like having the flu - I imagine Filius won't have to endure that with Melina caring for him.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Exactly, he'll be spared that, the massive joint pain, and all that. People have actually had such bad cases of the bends that they've been crippled for life, and in really rare cases, it can cause strokes. Usually, though, it's just a matter of getting sick, and it will usually get better on its own even without treatment -- but like you say from your own experience, it's really unpleasant without treatment!Severus just didn't know enough about what he was dealing with, and he's one powerful wizard, so what he "asked for" in his spell is what he got -- the whole shebang!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
I had to read this chappie again - forgot why Melina used the Obliviate - and I just have to say, this is pure genius. Brilliant chappie, brillant original medical/magical situation and a brilliant punch line at the very end.And of course, Melina is brilliant!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Yes, Severus has a whole new appreciation for Melina.
My jaw dropped when Melina threw that Obliviate. It was so unexpected, even moreso than Filius' accident. In fact, it reminded me of thr tumble he took when he met Pomona.
What is it with Sev and spells that tosses people in the air? I had no idea what to think when Sev described Filius' injuries. Thankfully I had Aine's prediction to reassure me. However, while I think he might be careful about casting the spell in the future, Severus might take care of using that spell outdoors as well...we wouldn't want Albus to float away, though the man might enjoy it immensely if he could quickly compensate for the loss of oxygen. Almost like a magic carpet ride, I imagine, sans carpet.
I'm still chuckling about Melina. Sev had a right to be wary at the end.
Thanks for another wonderful chapter!
PB
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! I'm glad it surprised you! It sure shocked Severus!I think that Severus could modify the spell so that it worked "right," but I think he'll not be casting at other poeple for a while yet, at least!Glad you liked it!I'm now working on a Hooch fic, a long one-shot tentatively called "Blackie" -- more explicitly canon-compliant than some of my stuff, and not part of the RaMverse. I'd started it last autumn then went into winter doldrums and almost forgot it. And I've started the next chapter of Charming the Scottish Garden, so hopefully I will have something more posted this coming weekend. We'll see.
YAY!!! An update! I've been waiting not so patiently since yesterday for this and long before that! I was so worried about Filius and Severus, he's not going to be ok with this incident poor man! I loved that he wanted Poppy to be there, like maybe he needed her presence to stay calm. I LOVE Melina, she's the best! So wonderful how she just Obliviated Madam Fuller! And Severus joke at the end, that was wonderful! Hopefully Filius will be alright and he'll convince Severus to continue duelling pratice. I can't wait for the next chapter! I miss Poppy too!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Melina didn't dawdle about there, did she? She has more appreciation of the subtleties of Severus's position than Fuller does (Fuller only knows him third-hand, after all), and she saw no point in letting the witch have an opportunity to talk about what happened.Severus has great faith in Poppy, that's for sure. I'm hoping to get to another chapter of Charming the Scottish Garden this week, then maybe next week, I can do another of LVS. Thanks very much for the review! I was a little afraid everyone would have completely forgotten the fic by now! :-)
Response from doralupin87 (Reviewer)
I could never forget it! I'm just hooked. I hope you'll be able to update more often now, I miss Severus and Poppy's guessing game, I'm curious about Poppy's middle name! You're going to update CSG? Really? For real? Ohhhh how nice! That's my favorite of your stories, Siofre and Johannes are just so sweet! Thank you for posting!
Yay, you're back!!! I'm so happy to see a new chapter for this story. woo hoo.Poor Severus and Filius. They were having such a grand time until ... But I'm glad Flitwick is going to be alright and that Severus didn't have to confess what happened to Poppy. I can only imagine how much more upset he would have been if he'd had to bring Flitwick to Poppy. eeep.Hope this is a sign that you're back to writing!!Cheers for Posting the GLM
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, I'm sure he would have been abashed if Poppy had been there, but at least he would have had some confidence in her abilities! LOL!I hope it's a sign I'm back to writing, too!Thank you for your review -- er, I mean, "Cheers for Reviewing!"
I really enjoyed this story too and had, for a time, stopped reading! However, I returned after having shored up some mental fortification for what I assumed was to be a Severus/Hermione pairing. I was pleasantly surprised to realise it was far from the dreaded S/H pair, especially after the note about the impossibility of a Gareth/Severus pairing. I needed some distraction from RL and remembered this was still pinned and continued reading. Honestly, I wasn't sure for a time who Severus would end up with. I'd done a little chair dance for the elimination of Hermione, and was debating whether Severus would settle between Helena or Poppy. To my surprise, Poppy was the eventual winner, and I was pleased with the pairing. I hadn't ever read or considered such a pairing so I was intrigued with how well the two would mesh. I had a moment of giggles for one thought in particular - Severus Snape, Man Whore. I thought it was appropriate for the moment and couldn't help but think it was about time too.
I was tickled pink by the mention of Trinidad and Tobago and could honestly think of places a magical community could thrive in, especially some of the small uninhabited islands. It was an amusing distraction.
I loved the return of Gertrude Gamp and was quite humbled by the thought that she not only forgave Severus but lived alone on that island for his sake. It was frankly an awe inspiring moment. I have no other words to describe that feeling.
Minerva as Headmistress is really cool. She's a radical for wanting to do away with what has become a tradition. I am pleased that she maintained her strength. Not only does she have her own agenda, but she has the gumption to follow through with them even when Albus disagrees. However, poor Albus must use his talents at match making, a task which he doesn't seem quite capable of doing. I couldn't help but chuckle at Minerva coming to the rescue with the name plates. It was one of those moments where the adult humours the kid and then distracts him with something else. How many times has Albus been the one humoring and metaphorically patting people on their head?
I adore Eoghan! My goodness how cute he is...or rather his adoration of Severus Snape, his cousin! I can definitely see Eoghan as another bright spot in Severus' life, even if he seems bewildered at the boy's hero-worship. I also see a potential closeness with Soifre and Johannes that would envelop Severus into a family life. Just that association alone opens so many doors for Severus that I can imagine him being comfortable around them, being pulled into the apothecary with Murdoch with his little fan club, and so many other things. I can also imagine a little confrontation with Quin. I do wonder what it is Quin picked up from Severus when he touched him too. I can only think Quin picked up on Severus' jealousy and anger at that time.
I liked seeing Harry briefly and was more than pleased his relationship with Ginny is finished. Speaking of Ginny, I suddenly could not shake the feeling that she is the vigilante killer, but I know that it has to be wrong. That is, unless she has a couple of accomplices staking the targets out. Somehow I don't think any of the Weasleys would target innocents. Arthur is the one I am sorry about. It cannot be easy living at the Burrow alone. I was glad you had Severus mention to Hermione that Arthur wasn't coping well.
I can't even begin to imagine what Severus' letter from his father could contain. What words could a father put into a letter that could describe his rationale for leaving? Other than reassuring that Severus was not at fault, I can only think how difficult it was to write and how sad that little Sev couldn't have read it. I also wonder what motivation Sev's mother had for hiding it. I don't think it was sheer maliciousness either, at least I hope not.
As always, an excellent job!

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you very much, PB! And apologies for being so remiss and tardy in replying to your lovely review. Re: Snape and who he ended up paired with. I realized early on in writing LVS (which I wrote a good deal of before beginning to post it to TPP) that I couldn't pair him with Hermione in the RaMverse; it just wouldn't work for me or for the story I was feeling spinning out for Severus. I am very glad that you like the Poppy/Severus pairing -- and I do think it's a very rare pair, but I think that, at least in this version of the HP universe, it works well. We see at the end of An Act of Love that Poppy is beginning to wonder about Severus, beginning to see him beyond the persona he presents to the world -- or at least to get a glimmer of the fact that there is something more there. In Death's Dominion, we see that she treats him as a confidant, and he treats her as one, as much as he is able to -- she is the only one whom he speaks to about his concerns regarding Robbie and Minerva's relationship. He also trust her enough to break down in front of her, as humiliating as he may find it, and she accepts it. With someone else, he may have raged and thrown them out of his suite before he was able to get to that point. So their relationship had some basis in the earlier stories, some genuine fondness and loyalty between them.Re: Trinidad and Tobago. I love to envision a wizarding world that is global and that is as varied as the real world is. T&T seemed a "natural" for a vibrant wizarding population. I set a part of one of my Flitwick fics in Australia -- just a little glimpse of it -- and that was fun, too. (It's the last installment in the "Cheering Charms.")Ever since DD when I wrote about Gertrude and the way she lost her arm, I've been building her backstory between that time and when she finally reappears during the battle -- I knew she didn't stay on the island out of fear, but out of strategy, and it was a great feeling to be able to write it, and to do it in that way, in an encounter with Severus that she engineered. I'm glad you liked it. :-)I am glad you like Eoghan. He sprang into my mind one day while I was working on Death's Dominion, a boy somewhat like Severus, and yet quite different, distantly related on the Prince side, and he grew into a boy with a personality, habits, and interests before he'd done much more than sit at a table during the awards dinner at the end of DD. Imagining how Severus would react to him -- getting into Severus's skin and seeing Eoghan -- was very satisfying to write. It will be good for Severus to have an extended "family" through Eoghan and, in a way, through Minerva and Gareth. It's rather like what Albus said to Severus when he was "dying": "My family is taking good care of me, and they will care for you, too." Now Severus has a chance to experience something of a family that accepts him and cares for him.If you want to see more of Harry and what he's like now, you could take a look at "Draco's Heart," which is a very fast-paced, rather light, story that runs parallel to LVS. You'll see more of Ginny there, too -- and maybe get more of your answers about whether she might be the vigilante. ;-)The letter from Severus's father, and Eileen's motivations for hiding it, will eventually reappear in the story -- which I'm feeling in the mood to work on again after several months' hiatus.Thank you very much for the review! It was very meaty and I enjoyed seeing the story again through your eyes! (I think it's part of what's brought the characters to my mind again and made me think about doing a bit of writing on the story.)
Gertrude IS absolutely the greatest Slytherin! I'm glad Severus realized it and expressed his appreciation of her Slytherin qualities. Being a Gertrude fan and seeing from reviews that others are too, I'm curious as to whether you are surprised at how taken readers are with her character.
Glad to find out her reasoning for staying on the island for all those years. Enjoyed the conversation between Minerva and Filius also. Thanks.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I have been surprised by how much so many readers like her character. I hadn't anticipated it, certainly, when I first brought her into the story way back in RaM, but I've always enjoyed writing her. I am very gratified that she remains well-liked. From the moment she first appeared "in person" in the Great Hall, I felt that she was one of those "still waters run deep" sorts of women, and one with a strong core but many layers.I'm glad that you enjoyed her conversation with Severus. These chapters, and revealing the true reason for Gertrude's long exile, were ones that were a long time coming. Thanks very much!
Poor poor Severus, way over his head :) lol. I'm actually surprised I didn't notice this story before, especially as I read Death's Dominion three times, and intend on going back to read the one before that.

LOL! Yes, he had absolutely no clue what he was doing! He should have tried baby steps with the flirting, and maybe tried it with someone he hadn't been having a (little) fantasy about the night before. Thanks for the invite. I'll likely send you an email later this evening.(I'm glad you liked Death's Dominion!)
I find the scenes with Gareth and Severus to be very intense, in a warm way. I enjoy the way you are using their friendship to help Severus to overcome his issues with touch and trust.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! Their relationship does nudge Severus to be more open with those he's closest to, and they show him that he can trust others, at least some others, without being betrayed or injured, either physically or emotionally.Thank you very much for your review!
This chapter just blew me away. I loved learning about what Gertrude's life on the island was like and that it was better than I thought. But its the abstract things, the underlying emotions, that really got me. Gertrude's level of comfort with Severus- being able to touch him even! His feelings of "relief, anguish," and guilt I imagine, when Gertrude turned down his offer of reparation. Loved the line about Gertrude starting to feel like an echo herself. It said so much with just a few words. Masterfully written. Thank you!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you very much! I'm very glad you enjoyed it. I did work at trying to convey a certain tone and evoke an atmosphere, so I'm glad that you sensed the underlying emotions throughout. :-)
Another very wonderful chapter. I'm enjoying Severus' thoughts and plans for his new office very much. Can't wait for Poppy to see it. Of course my favorite part is the little flashback to the morning with Poppy. It's good to see Severus spending time with others too like Flitwick. Seeing him come into his own with people. Sigh... I guess I'm all caught up now and will have to waiti patiently for more of the story.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
That is the trouble with getting caught up with the most recent chapter of a WIP, isn't it? Well, I'll try not to keep you waiting overly long, but I'm also working on a couple other things, so LVS has gone into a bit of a break.I'm glad you enjoyed seeing Severus being "social" in his own way, and Flitwick trying to find out what's on Severus's mind and what he had done the previous day without appearing to fish too much. Thanks very much for the reviews! I'm glad you enjoyed getting caught up! :-)
Wonderful start to the chapter with the additional detail about the cottage and Gertrude. Severus still thinking about his time with Gertrude. His thoughts aobut all his hiding places and what's in some of them. It's so good to see him looking to the future - wishing to leave the darkness in the past (mostly). Adorable little Twisket coming to tell Severus before he tells Minerva that he's returned. I was a little surprised that Minerva asked about the book - but I should have expected it. She is a very forthright witch after all. Of course my favorite part is his visit with Poppy. I just love the way you write them together so much. I sit here reading and grinning. That he missed her. Him so easily saying he loves her. (Can not wait until she finally says it back) He told her where he was and who with (though not everything - I'm growing very concerned about what will happen when Poppy finds out especially if it's not from him). I adore his telling her how smart she is and that he believes she could do anything. I also love that she "cares about" him enough that she'd be too upset to treat him.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
There is a small part of him that still clings to the past, and to the Dark, you're right about that, though he does really want to leave it behind.Twiskett's a loyal little guy! :-)Yes, he was very glad to get back to Poppy, and they are becoming even closer. Severus keeps trying to find a way out of telling Poppy about what he did to Gertrude when he was a Death Eater, and yet he's worried about the consequences of not telling her. He's trying to avoid even thinking about it. We'll see how well that works! Thanks very much! Glad you liked it.
Love all the detail about the portrait network. You've made the portraits such interesting and dynamic characters. I so adore the Silent Knight and Dilys is wonderful too.Wow the history for Filius and Pomona. I feel so bad for him. Wow, what a powerful and moving conversation Severus and Gertrude have at the end of this chapter. I'm feeling so many emotions right now. It's wonderful! I love Gertrude's reasoning for staying on the island. I did wonder - it seemed out of character for fear to be her main motivating factor - I did not think in terms of the long term plan - letting Severus become who he was - working for Riddle and calculating her time to emerge and fight herself. The way severus absorbs this is so powerful and his explanation of the true greatest Slytherin. Lovely!!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! It was fun to see Minerva using the portrait network, and, of course, using her special living portrait, to find out more of what she wanted to know.I'm glad that you liked the conversation between Gertrude and Severus. It changed a lot for him that night. Thanks for the review! Very glad you enjoyed the chapter.(And yes, poor Filius. He had a rocky time there sometimes.)
Of course my first thoughts when reading the description of the cottage were remembering Minerva and Albus' trip there from your previous story. It tells so much about about Gertrude to see her in this envorinment where she spent so many years. I love her advice to Severus to look ahead and not back. It so makes sense that at this point Severus would want to do something like this for Gertrude. He still feels he needs to make some sort of sacrafice to feel he has attoned and to make her whole again. Her reaction is perfect. I love your writing so much. I just never have time to read anymore. Hopefully I'll have time to get caught up by this weekend. In the mean time, I can just keep going one lovely chapter at a time.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
The cottage that Albus and Minerva have on the island is much smaller, of course, with only a few rooms downstairs, and down at the other end of the island. The new one they built for her during her first summer on the island was better for a long-term stay, as Severus noted, with visitors coming and going, and also allowed Albus & Minerva to continue to come to the island themselves and stay in their little salt-and-pepper cottage down by the shore.Gertrude is trying to help Severus put his own personal history into a greater context, and, as you say, encourage him to look forward and not back, to learn from the past by not be hampered by it. I'm glad you liked her advice and her reaction to his offer. It was hard for her to be tempted like that, but she didn't allow the temptation to gain any kind of grip on her, so it was never a genuine choice for her. Gertrude, being the sort of woman she is, made the only choice she really could.I'm glad that you're still enjoying the story! I hope you do find some time to continue reading it. :-)Many thanks for your review!
Response from OldFashionedGrl (Reviewer)
Thanks for reminding me Albus & Minerva's cottage is still on the island. I was somehow imagining them expanding it for Gertrude - but I guess I was just too tired to remember. I love all the details and picturing it all unfolding in my mind. Now I have a better picture. Hope to get to another chapter this evening.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Gertrude did end up with a rather expanded home there, with the chickens, goats, various sheds, gardens, and so forth. She could be fairly self-sufficient.Hope you enjoy it if you get to it! :-)
“I believe I am intact,” -- I can so hear Severus' voice in my head. I love this line!Curiouser and curiouser -- Wondering why Gertrude brought Severus to the island. What she wants to get there. How this is all going to playout...I enjoyed her protective motherliness - not wanting Garath to get hurt. Warning Severus that Garath might want more from heim - making sure Severus has been honest with his intentions.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Yes, that is a "Severus" line there! Glad you liked it!Gertrude has been worried a little about their friendship, but not very much until Gareth told her about the house -- then she did feel very protective toward him and worried that Gareth might be headed for some pain.Thank you!
More and more intrigue. I'm curious about why he would cut his hand with the knife. Can't wait to read what happens between Gertrude and Severus. Of course I have an idea what he's thinking as far as sacrifice but I know you'll put a unexpected twist in there.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He was experimenting, and also just "experiencing" his hand, trying to prepare himself mentally for what he was about to offer. Thanks for the review!
Aine goes a bit far it seems, but it may be good for Severus to hear. So good to see Severus interacting with everyone at the party, feeling a part of the group - at least a little bit maybe. I adore Poppy and Severus and love seeing them becoming more and more a couple... sitting near... sharing desserts...The sorting was fun ... very intriguing decision for Quinn and the idea of them all playing charades is fantastic.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm sorry! I never received the review notices for this set of reviews! Glad I clicked to see "all unanswered reviews" -- I was astounded when I saw how many there were!Probably good for Severus to hear, as well as good for Aine herself to confront him about it.Glad you liked the party!
*snip*“Yes, and that is a benign example, of course. There are also quite effective rage charms, lust charms, envy charms, and even despair charms. They don’t actually create a lasting emotion, but they can still be effective long enough for the subject to act on the emotion, much to their later chagrin or dismay. And that doesn’t even take into account the kinds of ensnarement spells one can use to inveigle a person to believe he or she is in love. But such spells never create any real love or attachment. If the spell is broken, the phantasm of love vanishes like leprechaun gold in the sun, and it’s usually replaced by quite genuine loathing and resentment.”I really like that paragraph.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
I enjoy Filius in this chapter, very much. It has been far too long since I dipped back into the RaMVerse, so it was really wonderful to do so. Filius is truly a Ravenclaw in this chapter - disecting every idea, topic, spell, emotion, tune or expression in detail! HAHA.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
*grin* Glad you enjoyed the chapter and liked seeing Filius in a few of his Ravenclaw moments. Thanks!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Aye, I do! That's a Ravenclaw if I ever saw one.
*snip*Now time to find some Headache Potion and rest her eyes. Albus would be home soon. She could forget the Dark for a while and sleep in his comforting embrace.I so love that line, and so love the strong, intimate relationship they have, even after all these years, and his affection for her is as strong as ever - and of course hers for him - just love that.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Its true, I've met couples that are still that way after years and years, but not many. Very, very few, and I am so thankful that Minerva and Albus have that tendernes, trust and respect for eachother.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! I'm very glad you liked that bit. They do still have a very deep well-spring of love for each other, and their attachment and care is in some ways greater than it was when they were first together. All that they've shared together, whether bad or good, has helped them grow closer, and they both find life better for having each other in it.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
If my father were affectionate and personable, he and my mom would be like that - but he's lacking in expressing love and personality - hehe. Still, I love to see this in Albus and Minerva, love it, so love it.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's one reason I so enjoy writing Albus & Minerva together. Minerva is a bit more restrained than Albus, normally, but not with Albus, particularly not in private -- and Albus is very affectionate and has a lot of love, but also a lot of need for love, so he's very happy to have his snuggles with Minerva. I think that Minerva is very good for Albus in the RaMverse, and that without her, he would have become ever better at "compartmentalizing," to the point where he could keep himself from feeling a lot of the love and affection for others because it would be easier for him in his role.
*snip*Severus sat in silence, trying to absorb all she had told him. He had wondered sometimes how she was a Slytherin, this Muggle-loving friend of Dumbledore’s, and now, he saw some of those qualities. She had great patience for a long term plan to unfold; to remain waiting, biding her time until the right moment; to keep her motives to herself, not discussing them with anyone lest her purpose become diluted or she, dissuaded from her course; to allow others to believe whatever they wished about her, knowing that the truth was quite different; and then, following this long period of quasi-dormancy, to find the flexibility within herself to reenter society and live a new life, at her age and after her many trials and her years of solitude, and never to complain with bitterness about her lot, but to move ahead and to nurture others. He remembered Gareth’s off-hand comment about his mother’s moods, how she would sometimes close herself into her study and not emerge until her mood had passed. She struggled. Severus was sure that in those times, she struggled. He raised his eyes to meet hers. “There is one goal I shall never attain. I shall never become the greatest Slytherin. I believe the greatest Slytherin may truly never be recognised as such. But if anyone asks who in our House they may take as a role model, I will point to you and tell them, see, see this witch. This witch before us: She is the avatar of the true Slytherin spirit, of all that is best in our House. The greatest Slytherin.”I was really moved by this - and by Gertie's explanation of why she stayed hidden, in exile, for so long. I was also somewhat relieved that she told Snape what she saw, in his face, after he amputated her arm. While I still see quite alot of Hufflepuff traits in Gertrude, I do admit she is still a strong Slytherin and I am grateful that Snape recognizes all the good qualities of his house, in her. I do hope he honors her in some way, at the school. Gertrude's Hufflepuff nature keeps her from taking any glory or putting herself in the lime light.Gertie is one seriously wonderful witch.

She's also liked to stay below the radar for Slytherin reasons -- not merely from a desire to be out of the limelight for some Hufflepuffian sentiment. It's more calculated than that, and she does have her own ambitions. ;-) Snakes can also be quite solitary creatures -- and they can also like to work behind the scenes and take great satisfaction in that. I am glad you liked the passages in this chapter, Gertrude's explanation and Severus's appreciation. She has a lot of complicated motivations for what she does, and how she carries out what she wishes to accomplish, but there's a real mixture there of Slytherin and Hufflepuff, as you say!Glad you like her!

How could I NOT like her? She's beyond awesome and so amazingly humble, especially for a Slytherin!
*snip*Minerva stepped up behind Quin and said, “Excuse me, Hat, but a word with you, please.” She plucked the Hat from Quin’s head, causing the drowsy wizard to open his eyes, startled, and she placed the Hat on her own head. Whatever the Hat said, she smiled at it, then she shook her head. “Just get on with it!” she said loudly. The Hat seemed to frown, but Minerva lifted it from her head and replaced it on Quin. About fifteen seconds later, it shouted, “Hogwarts!”Albus laughed in disbelief. “What?”Quin took the Hat off and handed it to Gertrude. “Blasted old Charmed bit of felt must be losing its edge, Albus. Kept going round and round, dithering on. It was very dull. Told you I didn’t want to be Sorted into a House, but you all were so eager.” He shrugged.“But . . . there’s only been one person in the history of the school who was Sorted that way,” Albus said, “and he ended up being put in Ravenclaw as a compromise, since he needed to have a House for practical reasons.”Now that is most unusual - I wonder who else, Albus eis explaining, that was sorted in this manner.... kinda neat!

My spidey senses tell me that Gareth may find himself in danger hooking up with Helena! Shame, I hope its not her, because I like her. She's fun.Another odd note - you've described Helea to us well, dark hair, blue eyes, strikingly beautiiful - but when I think abuo ther, I see a beautiful, tall, thin black woman with thick long strands of large curls falling off her face. Weird huh? I'm not sure I mentioned this before, but I really love LVS - probably more than all your other fics, though I'm quite partial to RaM and Death's Dominion - I am very awed that you wrote such extensive alternate universes - so very cool and all for the love of all of us! *grins* WUV YOU MADAM RAVAN! Yous must send me an email with your addy again, gots a B-day pressie for ya!

My spidey senses tell me that Gareth may find himself in danger hooking up with Helena! Shame, I hope its not her, because I like her. She's fun. That's strange -- do you really dislike Gareth that much? He's one of my favorite characters. I don't understand why you wouldn't want him and Helena together.Weird huh? That is odd! Her hair is long and very straight, as straight as can be, her skin is dark, but coppery, she's very short, and she has blue eyes. She's one-quarter Cayuga, and part Irish, part Scottish, and part Italian. Funny how your imagination created an entirely different physicality for her!Aw, you're so sweet!I am glad you're enjoying it.

Dislike Gareth? No, not at all - where you get that notion? I'm worried Helena is the murderer - so obviously I don't want Gareth hooked up with her if she is!Yeah - Helena in my mind is black with thick, long, spiral curlies for hair - and i don't think you can change that notion now - no idea where that came from - but its stuck in me head!

Oh, you are afraid she's the vigilante. Could be! But Gareth's in no danger yet. Maybe you put her in a funny wig! haha! And back the DD/LVS/RaMverse: I'm really glad you are having fun with the extensive alternate universe! And that you're finding LVS an enjoyable part of it. Thanks!
I would very much liked to have seen Gertie's face when Severus bestowed that amazing honor upon her!Gertie is magnificent in this chapter, as she is in any chapter with eer in it! Love how she explained the reason for staying on that island for so long.Snape is now doubly endebted to her.

She was fairly deadpan, and suppressing an amused smile, though she was also flattered. Naturally, she told him to simply continue being the role model for Slytherin, as he was doing quite well!I'm glad you liked it!
*snip*“I’ll speak to him when he returns,” Minerva said with a nod, “but if you could keep an eye on him whilst Albus and I are up at Fàinne an Fhithich this week, I would appreciate it. Not to keep him out of trouble, you understand, just …”“I understand, Minerva. I will keep a fatherly eye on the boy! And if he has any worries, well, if he’ll talk to anyone, he’ll talk to Papa Filius!”Now how adorable is that? I ask you?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
*blush* Glad you find Papa Filius adorable!
And now I see what path he was warned NOT to take - similar paths from the past - warnings uttered, and Gertie's kind gestures are so very, very selfless and compassionate - she is truly an amazing woman. I love her even more for her kindness to the Brooding One.And I hope Severus sees this now, sees Aine's warning, and the path that he was to avoid, and that, with Gertie's help, he did avoid it and can walk a new path.Very gripping chapter and idea - very gripping indeed.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
The danger still looms for the Brooding One! He still must take care!I'm glad that you appreciated Gertrude's kindness toward him, and her ability to deny herself in order for them both to remain whole in the ways that count. She was also trying to show him something of himself by analogy, to give himself some perspective on where he'd been, who he'd been, what he'd done, and how it all fit in to the greater scheme of things.Glad you found it gripping! I'd been waiting a long time -- with Gertrude! -- to write this chapter, this set of chapters, and I had hopes they would work well. :-) thanks!
Intense chapter... I so missed Gertie, she is full of awesome.
