Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
*snip*“Severus?” Minerva’s voice came faintly through the heavy oak door.Poppy sighed. “You’d better get it.”“I have an erection the size of Ben Nevis.”Lolololololssssssssssssss
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Haha! Glad you enjoyed that!
*snip*Severus headed out of the house toward where Albus and Siofre waited. Albus waved good-bye. The last thing that Severus saw before he Disapparated was Johannes standing in the doorway, hand raised in farewell. I had the sudden worry that this was foreshadowing of Johannes death... I sure hope I'm wrong... no more good folk dieing I dearly hope.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, no no no! Johannes is still quite hale & hearty, and he hasn't an enemy in the world!
Lovely chapter. I am also anxious to know who the viligante is, I have a feeling that Bellatrix somehow is connected, well we will se in due time. Severus and Poppy is so sweet together, don't tell him I said that
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it -- and the look at Poppy & Severus one more time before she leaves on holiday!
*snip*At that moment, there was a loud crashing and clattering. Poppy and Severus both looked over at the Hufflepuff table. Poppy couldn’t imagine how Gwendolyn Cheever had ended up head first in the shepherd’s pie, but there she was, her legs kicking as she tried to extricate her head from the casserole dish, but she simply slid forward to hang off the other side of the table. The casserole dish shattered as it finally fell off her head. Poppy saw Severus twitch his finger, and the girl’s skirt and robe rearranged themselves to cover her pink knickers. One of her classmates reached out to try to help Gwendolyn, and he slipped on the shepherd’s pie and landed hard on his back. Oh dear! That is some rotten luck!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Poor Gwendolyn with her pink knickers showing as her head is stuck in the shepherd's pie! haha! Not good luck at all!
LOL, poor Minerva! She didn't get the answer she wanted but that was expected with Severus. I loved this chapter, loved the wonderful sweetness with Poppy and Severus and I'm so glad they are back to their little game, I'm so curious about Poppy's middle name! I've re-read all your fics and all the info on the RaMverse and I couldn't find it LOL, that was the point I suppose. Gotta love Twiskett "but I tells you first" he's so cute and loyal. I'm anxious to know who the viligante is and what's going to happen next with Severus. Wonderful chapter, thank you so much for updating! Sam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed it!Yes, Twiskett is very loyal. He has to obey the Headmistress, but after thinking about it, he decided that it wouldn't be disobedient just to inform the person he usually serves where he was going and why. So Severus was prepared, and Twiskett didn't feel like he was "telling" on him. lol!Oh, you'll find out what it is. And when you do, you may just slap your forehead! (There have been teeny, tiny hints sprinkled about, even before she and Severus got together. )I did want to give you one more little bit of Poppy & Severus before she left for the spa on vacation. And, of course, have Severus enjoy her company one more time, too! Thanks!
So glad these two had their talk... and they both know, now, honestly, that each of them is interested in a real relationship - and I feel they're both going about this sensibly - and they're so cute together. Poppy makes Severus a real human being!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus like Pinnochio, perhaps? You're right, though, Severus is definitely his best with her, and it's not always hard for him to be that way, either. It just flows from him more easily.
*snip*“I was about to leave, anyway,” Poppy said.Minerva raised a sceptical eyebrow, but didn’t say anything. LOLOLOL - I LOVE that Minerva! I can hear her thinking - Bull-- you were just leaving! HAHA
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“I really was just about to leave, Minerva,” Poppy said. “I’d wanted to take care of his chest injury before I left for the night.” She had put on her grey robe and was now pulling on her starched white pinny.“If you say so.” Minerva smirked.Still loving my Minerva! So full of awesome she is!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Minerva has a clear picture of what she believed they were doing before she arrived and what they would have been doing by now if she hadn't interrupted! LOL! And some other time, she may have been right -- poor Poppy! trying to insist to the contrary! haha!
*snip*Severus nodded and smiled gently. “We can—” He was interrupted by a sharp knocking on his door. “Who could that be at this time? It’s after curfew. So help me, if the Slytherins are up to something—”“Just see who it is before you get worked up,” Poppy said mildly. She Summoned the lid for the potion tin, and Severus stood and walked over to the door.“Sev! Shirt!” She Levitated his shirt to him. “It’s a gorgeous view without it, but I’d rather have it to myself.”Severus shrugged on the shirt, its French cuffs dangling loosely, and buttoned a few of the buttons. The knocking became more insistent. He jerked the door open, ready to snarl. My favorite bit! *snip*Severus kissed her once more lightly, and he had a sudden moment of complete clarity. He now understood precisely why he wanted to go more slowly. It wasn’t simply to show to Poppy that he wanted more with her than just a hot sexual affair: it was because he could appreciate all of these other moments, all of these wonderful moments with her, and experience their perfection. He could savour all the nuances of his emotions for her, and without having his sexual passion for her overwhelming them. He could even enjoy his physical arousal without giving in to the urge to increase it and satisfy his desire. And this bit too - I love how you put this, a moment of complete clarity - I imagine we've all had those, and when I do, its very intense, sudden and informative and I've learned - finally, to PAY ATTENTION to those moments! Thanks for adding that!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
:-) I am glad you liked those bits, especially his moment of clarity and his sudden appreciation of all of the nuances of feelings he was having.Thank you! :-)
Love the little backstory for Flitwick--I certainly hope he gets his wish! And of course, the scene between Gertrude and Severus is wonderful, particularly the last paragraph.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! Glad you liked the little glimpse of the Flitwick backstory. I have a ton of it written, and it's fun to be able to put it in here and there. :-)Gertrude, of course, found it flattering but amusing, yet Severus was so sincere, she didn't laugh at all. Simply told him to continue to be the role model for Slytherin, as he was doing quite well. Thanks!
*snip*“I know nothing about the Bible. It would be pointless for you to seek my opinion,” Severus said. He knew the story of David and Goliath and a few other iconic stories from the Bible—including, of course, the Christmas story—but he’d never actually read any of it himself, and they meant no more to him than any of the other myths and legends he’d heard as a child. Severus saw Eoghan’s face fall, and then he saw how the boy immediately masked his disappointment with a neutral expression, and Severus felt a sudden stab of empathy for him. “However, it would be educational for me. I would like to read it, if I may. And I can judge whether it is well written, up to Hogwarts standards.”Major growth there... compassion... empathy... is this Snape? You're sure? Course, I'm sure he sees the young man as what COULD have been his own son, or if he doesn't, he will some day.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Or a child who is a bit like he was as a boy. He has room to grow now. We just have to see whether he continues, and whether he lets himself!I'm glad you liked that bit!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
I liked it very much, especially the realization, for me as well as Severus - that this boy was much like him, but would not have the neglected childhood, lacking love and acceptance, that he had. And I do hope that Severus works on a relationship with the young man. By the way, how do you pronounce his name? Is it Ee Gan?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yew-wen, more or less. Similar to Ewan. When there's a gh together, don't pronounce the "g" hard.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip* The Dark Lord could only torture and murder him; Poppy . . . Poppy could break his heart.Awwwwwwww! I know that feeling so well! Scary stuff this love business!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*His arms went around her, and they both forgot the baklava.*le gasp* Forget the baklava????? NEVER! That stuff is soooo yummy!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Must be true love if they're forgetting the baklava! lol!I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!
Johannes reminds me much of Albus! The gardens were amazing! I love the detail you put into all of this!*mutters something about three galleons, to be deposited into her account directly*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! You are a hoot!Johannes is a bit more low-key than Albus, but they do both love flowers, and as a Ravenclaw, Johannes is quite bright! I'm glad you like him!
I think the word for this chapter is uncomfortable. It was hard to read what happened to Gertrude's arm. Severus seemed to be off-kilter and was having a lot thrown at him. Conversely Gertie seemed to become more comfortable with him, letting him touch her and calling him Severus. I enjoyed the peek at what Gertrude's life and farm were like. I must say that I had a little laugh at the way Gertrude is using Severus to get back on the island. She "out Slytherin-ed" him. I just tore through 2 chapters and am going to try and save some for later. Thanks for a great Saturday morning read.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you had some good reading for a Saturday morning! It is uncomfortable, and a bit foreign or alien, the world slightly askew or something. Yes, Gertrude did out-Slytherin him -- killing two birds with one stone, so to speak, finishing her conversation with him and managing to get to the island without breaking her promise not to go there alone. haha! Glad you liked it! Thanks!
*snip*“Then . . . tall, dark, and moody?” Violet asked. Poppy looked up. “What?”“Professor Snape? No, of course not, silly of me,” she amended quickly. “Who is the wizard, then?”“Professor Snape,” Poppy said.“I know, foolish of me to suggest it. So who is your date?”HAHAHAHAHA*snips*“Rapid deduction, simple process of elimination. Most of your male colleagues are taken, and I assumed it was someone on staff. And . . . you’ve spoken rather fondly of him over the last couple years, more than I would expect, considering what I know of the man’s character and disposition, and then there’s that little grey fellow you picked out for him. But I still wasn’t entirely serious when I suggested your date was with him. I’m surprised and not surprised,” Violet said. “So is this a first date?”“No. Yes. No. Not really.”“Why does this ambiguity not surprise me,” Violet said with a sigh. “You’ve been seeing him for a while, then?”This Violet is quite the card! HAHAHAHAHA!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Very glad you like Violet!
What a cute idea, Gareth dragging Severus all over Scotland to look for flowerrs - and - meeting all of his family, who, indeed, is quite expansive!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, the quest for flowers can be quite educational! ;-)
*snip*“Eoghan? You make less and less sense with each passing day, McGonagall.” Severus shook his head, then he stopped cold and grabbed Gareth’s arm. “Wait, he’s the boy you told me about, the one whose parents were killed,” he said in a low voice.“Aye, he’s the lad,” Gareth said.“You haven’t . . . you don’t think . . . they can’t believe . . .” Severus looked around them; there was no one within earshot. “I had nothing to do with that raid. I am certain of it. If it was in McTavish Street in nineteen ninety-five, I wasn’t there,” he whispered urgently.Gareth raised his hands, palms toward Severus, and said, “Wait, wait, my friend. No one said anything like that. It has never even been suggested. It’s just that—eh, you’ll find out soon enough, Severus. And it’s probably nothing that will matter to you, anyway, from what you’ve said in the past. I’ll enjoy the moment, though. Besides, you’ll be teaching Eoghan in the autumn. Might as well meet him now!” “You are truly infuriating, McGonagall.”“Sorry! I think it’s congenital! Let’s walk and find somewhere to leave from.”LOLOLSSssssssss
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, congenital infuriating-ness! lol! But he does keep Snape entertained! Glad you enjoyed that!
I remember what Severus said to Gareth and I don't think Gertrude will agree to it but it would be nice if it could be done without Severus being permanently maimed. This chapter hit me as very Slytherin what with all the secrecy, which I enjoyed because it featured my 2 favorite Slytherins. Off to read the next chapter. Thanks.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you recalled that! There was a lot of secrecy to their meeting, and rather a Slytherin chapter, as you say! Thanks!
*snip*“Really?” Tonks looked over Poppy. “Are you going to change careers, Poppy? Join the MLE, or just set up in business for yourself? Poppy Pomfrey, P.I. Extraordinaire?” Tonks and Poppy both laughed.LOLOLOLZZZZI am getting a kick out of Poppy and Severus with the baby, and Severus' mental comments about babies and Tonk's bottomless purse. *smirks*
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
OH wow! So cool that Poppy did all that to track down the USP delivery man! She needs a cape now!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
And the breakfast cereal get-up is not only brilliant, but hysterical!*snip*“Well, Narcissa will be pleased to hear that he hasn’t suffered any ill effects,” Tonks said. “Could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard her worry about the man—a mere Muggle, after all. But she seemed sincerely grateful that the man had saved Lucius. He certainly must have undergone a change, himself. He was among the worst of the Muggle-baiters. To go from torturing Muggles to this . . .”I have to agree with Tonks on that! By the way, I love Tonks, and I'm so glad you stuck her in this chapter, complete with cooing Teddy! And its true, baby heads do smell magical... I smell them and my body reacts INSTANTLY!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, she needs a cape and some kind of special Poppy, P.I. Extraordinaire, emblem! Like Superman's big "S"! lol!I'm glad you liked her methods -- she thought she was pretty clever. (And it was quite "Poppy-like," I thought, in execution. Minerva might have been equally brilliant, but her methods would have been different, I think.)Just thinking about baby heads and their sweet smell gets me all gooey! LOL! I'm glad that you're enjoying Severus & Poppy's interactions with the baby and with Tonks. It was nice to write Tonks, too, and I could see her having a purse like that, somehow! Thanks!
*snip*“I thought we could sit together,” Poppy said, one finger in the baby’s firm grasp and a smile on her face. She cooed at the littlest Lupin.Severus sighed inwardly. Witches and babies. “Very well.”Ahh but they are so magical!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“I would not wish to . . . drop him,” Severus said, holding the baby stiffly and wondering about baby drool on his black robes. He glanced over at Poppy and saw that she was smiling warmly at him. He relaxed slightly and held the baby a bit closer. It really wasn’t too bad, for a baby and a Lupin, he supposed. The boy reached up with one tiny moist hand and grabbed at his chin, then managed to latch onto a long lock of hair. Fortunately, he was content to hold onto it and gaze, amazed, up at the strange new face above him. Severus was surprised the child wasn’t crying already.LOLOLOLOLSSSsssssssssssssssss
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Very glad you enjoyed that! (Yes, babies are very magical!)
So my personal guess is this person, this murderer, has suffered a terrible loss of their child - and they are burying their pain of their loss in rage, and they've gone a bit loopy as well. But this person lost a child or children due to Riddle.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
They've certainly gone loopy, that's for sure!
*snip*“Mmm . . . but she did have some ingenious ideas, not that the quality of her work is important. It’s just that I’m put to mind of one of her books, the ABC Murders, I think it was called. Something like that. The point of the plot was that the murderer wanted to hide the real target and actual motive for his murder by murdering several seemingly unrelated people for no rational motive. Maybe there’s only one true target here, and we’re looking at it the wrong way. Perhaps the other attacks were . . . not a cover-up, like in the book, but practice?”I was actually thinking of that very idea (didn't recognize Christie's book) but the hiding the true target among a bunch of them notion - just two paragraphs before this one from Minerva! Now I feel smart! I be a smart Skunk Bear!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Minerva is a rather brilliant witch, after all, so you should feel like a smart weaseley-thing!
*snip*terribly outr*scratches head* I know you use lots of big words, and I often look things up, but can you help me with outr?
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“I thought it more challenging if we were to guess, however,” Severus said, suddenly feeling foolish now that he was telling Albus. This was a childish game . . .Which means, Albus would love it! Naturally! No reason to feel foolish, Severus!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“Minerva did bring on a few off-duty Aurors and hit wizards to help patrol the grounds ..."Hit wizards" - Minerva brought in hit men? Seriously? *blinks*
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“He was just a year ahead of me,” Poppy interjected. “He used to help me with my Transfiguration lessons after Minerva left, and I’d help him in Potions, but Defence was always his favourite subject. He always talked about how he had to get the highest marks possible so that he could enter the Auror training programme. He was a hard worker. It used to be a struggle to get him to go into the village on Hogsmeade weekends during his seventh year. We’d be sitting in Puddifoot’s and he’d have a book out, on his lap under the table. Always revising for his NEWTs.” Poppy chuckled at the memory.OH HO! So Poppy dated Moody as well? Goodness! Who hasn't she dated? And why did she let Moody go? *snorts* Oh, maybe she couldn't handle the stress of him working in the Auror department... her being a medi-witch and all.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It looks like it lost a letter (an e with an acute accent over it) somehow in the cutting & pasting, which does happen sometimes. That's "outré" -- meaning outside the ordinary, odd, unusual, peculiar. Hopefully, I can fix it easily! :-) Thanks for bringing it to my attention!"Hit wizards" are from canon. They work for the MLE and are used to hunt down bad guys -- they don't actually kill them. Don't ask me why JKR used that term, 'cause I don't know. I'm just sticking with her usage of it. (I forget where we first learn about them -- it may be in Harry's first visit to the Ministry?)No, Poppy never dated Moody. They were just in school together and were part of the same group of friends. He wasn't interested in girls at the time -- he was concentrating too hard on wanting to do as well as he could so he could be an Auror. His one extracurricular activity was Quidditch, in which he was a Gryffindor Beater. (That's never made it into a fic yet, but I have it in my "Moody notes" from way back when I was first writing RaM.)
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Ahh - thanks for explaining the weird word, and how weird Rowling used "hit-wizards" and I think its very cool and in-canon that Moody was so studious in school, so focused on becoming an Auror - and that he was buddies with Poppy - very cool! Aye! A beater, he'd be excellent!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
And I managed to get it to keep its accented "e" on this go 'round -- hope it sticks! LOL! It was odd, there was a blank space there where the e should have been. It had happened before, but it's not consistent, so I don't know what might cause it. I'll have to be sure to check whenever I use an accented character.Yes, Moody was very focussed and a very hard worker. I'm glad you find it in-character for him!
*snip*“That’s all right. I’m sure that it must be important, or Minerva would have waited until your meeting this afternoon to speak with you.” Poppy placed her palm on his chest. “And if you still have that ache later, perhaps you might wish to see me about it.”DAWWWWWWWWWWW! is she not SO sweet? I mean really... how in hell is this woman still single? She's about as adorable as a litter of puppies - I mean not when they're chewing and peeing on everything.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“Cailleach.” Severus waited as the gargoyle slid aside, somewhat more slowly than usual, he thought. The gargoyle yawned, then stuck his tongue out at Severus before winking at him.LOLOLOL - That Gargoyle has some Dumbledore silliness in it, does it not? *grins* that made me grin!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Why is she still single? Well, living with a bunch of kids and a small, sometimes rather odd, assortment of adults might have limited her opportunities somewhat! I think, like Poppy does, that gargoyles then to be that way! haha!
I really, really liked the stories about Quin and the creative justice he delt to those who betrayed him - well done!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
And I have to absolutely agree with Snape - no bloody pink - hideous color... ew!And I'm a tad miffed at Gareth toward Gertrude... but then, I'd be upset at anyone who looked at Gertie cross-eyed.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
And I have to absolutely agree with Snape - no bloody pink - hideous color... ew!And I'm a tad miffed at Gareth toward Gertrude... but then, I'd be upset at anyone who looked at Gertie cross-eyed.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed the stories about Quin! No need to be miffed at Gareth. It's just a mother-son thing. He really doesn't want her interfering with his life, and he also doesn't want to talk about his sex life with her -- understandably! lol! And if she jumped to conclusions, well, she'll figure it out eventually.
This was quite an exciting chapter - I especially loved the dueling but was horrified that Moody lost *pouts*! I really enjoyed Poppy and Severus' name guessing game and that Albus butted in on it - that was fun, and am anxious to see Severus and Albus duel nonverbally! Woo hoo!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Albus did think their game was fun! And I'm glad you enjoy their guessing game. I'm glad you enjoyed the duel. Yes, poor Moody. But he did pretty well, nonetheless! It was a fairly even match.
What a sad chapter! I was sad for Gareth about Hooch, actually, and, well Severus' mom, and his father... sheesh...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you found it moving. There are layers to Snape's family, and things weren't easy for any of them. Yes, poor Gareth. It was more of a let-down than he wanted to admit.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
I got that impression... for a care-free, jump in the sack with who ever kind of guy, I was quite surprised at his dissapointment.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He is not a jump-in-the-sack-with-whoever kind of guy. That's what other people think, but as he says way back when, they're wrong. (And they are. :-))
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Yes Ma'am! *smirks*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You probably thought Minerva was terrible back in RaM, then, with the people she slept with! LOL! Poor Gareth!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Lets see... I remember..... two? I think, two... before Albus that is.... but perhaps my memory is shot. And no, I don't think anyone is terrible for being... less descriminating - though of course, I would prefer that Gareth stick with witches, but hey, we're all quirky like that! heeheeAwww, come on, can't I tease you?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Minerva had a number of boyfriends before she moved in with Rudolf. It was only after breaking his heart that she stopped dating anyone more than casually. (She talks about it with Albus on their picnic date on the mountain.) I think I only explicitly named Carson, the French envoy (Jean-Paul), and Rudolf, but she did say there were others, as well. (And, of course, there was Quin, but he doesn't technically count, except in Minerva's heart.)Yes, you can tease me. But poor Gareth is discriminating in his own way -- and he's turned people down flat! lol!
