Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
LOL. Severus is a maudlin, mildly horny, hilarious drunk. **love**
Response from blj (Reviewer)
Also: An update!! Squee!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yeah, writing Severus drunk is fun! Glad you love him that way! ;-)I hadn't planned to update, but I felt bad for not updating anything in absolutely ages, and I'd had a draft of this sitting on my computer since October. I decided it was time to dust it off, polish it up, and post it as a Boxing Day present of sorts! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm soooooo happy! an update! YAY!!! what a great Christmas present!. Poor Severus he's so insecure! and Gareth didn't help matters talking about erotic massages lol, I'm glad Gertrude is looking forward to their trip, she deserves to have some fun!. I can't wait for Severus and Morgana to go out, that's bound to be interesting! Merry Christmas! thanks for the update! Sam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, I thought I'd send this out as a bit of a Christmas present to you folks who have been waiting for some kind of update somewhere from me! :-) I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, Severus is still having some jealousy/insecurity problems, but at least he recognizes it! And has someone like Gareth to point things out to him.Merry Christmas to you, too!~MMADfan

Great chapter! A very sensible subject, and oh so painful for Severus, which was very palpable. Extremely well told and written!
Author's Response: Indeed, a very difficult and painful subject for them both, but a very good conversation for Severus to have, which Gertrude recognized. It was a chapter that I had been looking forward to writing, so I'm glad it came across well.
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! I am truly hoping to get more writing done this week. But that was my hope last week, as well! I think I even left the chapter I was writing in CSG in midsentence. Ack!
Thanks very much for the reviews!

*feels fuzzy and happy after this chapter*
Great sandwich choice! I never had it with spinach, though; absolutely have to try it.
And I can't wait to hear their real middle names.
Author's Response: Oh, very yummy with baby spinach! Mmm!
You probably have forgotten Severus's real name, though he did tell it to Gareth, along with more info about his family and who he was named for, but Poppy's name has been kept under wraps! So you can guess right along with Severus!
I'm glad the chapter gave you the warm fuzzies!
Thanks for the review.

What an enjoyable meeting for the two of them, and such an interesing game Poppy is playing! ;o)
Author's Response: She remembered his enjoyment of the occasion they used the staff room, and she is trying to make this time more playful for him.
Thanks!
That encounter brought tears to my eyes. You are an excellent writer.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it!
Another lovely chapter. I am greatly enjoying this fic.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-)
Oh fantastic chapter! Oh course I think that about any chapter with Gertrude in it :). Wasn't expecting the conversation between them but I'm so happy they had it. It will do them both good. I hope Severus appreciates how amazing and brave Gertrude is to let him into her house and forgive him for something that many would think is unforgiveable. My heart went out to her when she spoke about how 20 yrs ago she would have liked to have had at least part of the life she had hoped for. I hope her third marriage makes her very happy. Curious about the way Gertrude and Gareth communicate. Wonderful chapter! More Gertrude and Gareth please.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter so much -- I'd been looking forward to writing it, too. It is kind of a key conversation for Severus, and, as you say, for Gertrude, too. Severus does appreciate it, once he has time to think about it and have it sink in. He's kind of in shock, and also trying to switch over to interacting with Gareth. If you remember "The Unsentimental Arithmancer," you'll know how they communicate. You'll have more of both of them! I'm glad you're enjoying them. Thanks!
Response from esmelle (Reviewer)
I think I have The Unsentimental Arithmancer just about memorized, lol, so I do remember the mirrors Albus gave Gertrude and Reginald. Great way to communicate. Thanks for cluing me in.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! It does sound like you have it about memorized! I guess you are a true Gertrude Gamp fan. ;-)
I'm happy too because I like the way Severus is picturing the future. I thought Severus' middle name was Samuel. Guess I'll have to keep guessing along with Poppy. Great job.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He told Gareth his real name, remember, way back in the chapter before Severus & Poppy went to Delancie's. Druing the same conversation they had about spell colors. (Don't want to tell you in case you missed it completely and prefer to keep on guessing! But if you remember what they were doing during the conversation, that will give you a clue as to the name!)Severus does have a happy image of the future, maybe for the first time in his life. Thanks for the review!
This was another fantastic chapter.I loved the interaction between Severus and Gertie. I would love to have been a fly on the wall to observe that one. I'm sure it was uncomfortable for both of them, in different ways, but they seemed to be honest with each other. I think it took a great deal of courage for Gertie to confront Snape and then to offer some measure of forgiveness. Now, I'm looking forward to seeing what Gareth and Severus chat about. I do so love Gareth!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it!Gertrude knew that it would be good for Severus to hear her say those words, and that it would be good for her to say them. Of course, there was some conversation that Gertrude still wants to have with him, and that had to wait. This, though, was a kind of key conversation for Severus to help him keep moving forward.Yep, Gareth and Severus are in the next chapter, and hopefully that one will please, too! Thanks very much for the review!
yay!!! oh I missed missed her!! I'm so happy she's back! yay!!! Trudie! this chapter was so wonderful and so terribly sad! poor Severus! I can imagine what he was feeling but he was brave. And Trudie! my god! she was wonderful, so brave and poised, I do love her! lol. I'm so glad they are clearing the air between them, I know they won't be friends but it'd be nice if they can be in the same room together for more than a few minutes, for Gareth's sake at least. I wonder what would have been Malcolm's reaction to Severus after Trudie's injury, oh well! thank you, thank you so much for updating! I can't wait to read more, and thank you for bringing Gertrude back! Sam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You're very welcome! I thought you might like this chapter, so I posted it early for you. :-) I think that Malcolm had he been alive at the time, would have hunted Severus down and killed him, or something pretty close to that, then if Snape was still alive, seen to it that he was thrown into the darkest of Azkaban's miserable cells for the rest of his life. So . . . Severus is a lucky man! This was good for Severus -- and for Gertrude -- and once Severus has some time to think about it, he'll be glad that Gareth was late. Thanks for the review!
Response from doralupin87 (Reviewer)
awww you are so sweet! well thank you very much! I really did like the chapter, I loved it! I don't know who was more surprised when the door opened Severus or me! lol. I missed her! she's such a wonderful, wonderful character. I think you might be right, Malcolm wouldn't have taken it well, so it was good for Severus that he wasn't around but I still miss him! I would trade Severus for Malcolm any day, you know? lol. Thank you again for the update, I hope you are having fun with NaNo!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I know -- I like Malcolm, too. I've been having fun having him back in a story in CSG. NaNo has slowed, but it was not a good week for me, so I'm hoping I can catch up over the next few days. It is fun to be writing something different, anyway! :-)
wow, wow, that was steamy! soooo hot! wonderful simply wonderful!!. I loved the bow lol, that was totally wicked and really cool of her. I loved it that he's feeling more open about sex and stuff, it's good that Bella didn't damaged him, and he's learning new things with a great teacher! I like it that she's eager and so ready! lol, it was really nice of her to take the time to make everything wonderful for them. I could happily kill Severus for talking about such dark things in such a wonderful moment and I knew they would be interrupted! always happens lol. I can't wait to read more, thanks for updating!Sam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I'm glad you found it steamy! Poppy's also good for his sense of humor about himself -- he was a good sport about the bright pink scarf and appreciated it's more positive aspects! lol!Yeah, Severus can worry about things at odd times, but since it had been on his mind, it was a relief for him to have it brought up and dismissed as a concern. At least this interruption was only an owl, and not "in the middle of something," either! Thanks for the review!
Wow~ words actually fail me with this lemon. That was sooooo incredibly hot and erotic. All your hard work on this lemon really shows in the detail and the images you create. Tee hee, Sev in a hot pink scarf! You've got me rolling over here with that one! And I loved his reaction to Poppy when she cast the spell on his erection. Priceless!!!I can certainly say that Severus and Poppy make one super HOT couple in the sack and I think it's good for both of them!! Now, I'm off to find a pitchfork so I can lynch Gareth for interrupting the afternoon!!! lol
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed the lemon. Thanks very much for your generous comments. Glad you liked the shocking pink scarf! teehee! I'm glad you find the two of them so good together. Don't get out your pitchfork just yet! LOL! Gareth's interruption might not be too bad, after all -- maybe hardly an interruption at all, although Severus does like to grump about them!I'm glad that the story doesn't feel like it's run its course already for you. I have a lot more chapters outlined, but it does take quite a lot of time to write and polish each chapter -- time that I could be spending doing something like . . . I dunno, watching TV! LOL! Vegging out in front of the TV is sounding quite good to me today. Probably the chilly fall weather. Some popcorn, some hot chai, and the remote control . . . sounds good! Gotta keep my fingers outta the Halloween candy, though.
I love the name game Poppy and Severus are playing. It's so much fun to see what they'll come up with next. Looks like their afternoon date is going well and I'm glad Severus told Poppy about his kiss with Helena. Wouldn't want him or her to start second guessing anything if she discovered it later. haha. You'd better hurry and post the next chapter!!!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm sure she would have remained blissfully in the dark if Severus hadn't mentioned it -- it was more his own discomfort that drove the revelation. Helena sure wouldn't go around telling anyone that she and Severus had shared a passionate snog! LOL! Of course, Poppy could have wondered whether Severus & Helena were beginning to see each other in a non-Platonic way if the two began doing things together, and so Severus has opened the door for them to be open about discussing things like that.Oh, my, that next part -- I can only write little bits at a time, or my laptop might catch fire! LOL! But I hope not to keep folks waiting too long!
I'm liking Suzie more and more and I suspect Severus is too. It's so wonderful how you eventually tie eveything together like Suzie's Aunt. So many layers that keep revealing themselves. I really enjoyed seeing all the heads of house react to Minerva's proposal.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Suzie's fun to write. Her little personality just popped out at me in the opening chapters of LVS and kept begging for a story of her own, so I gave her one, and now she keeps standing in the wings, waving excitedly to remind me that she's there! haha! Glad you enjoy that! I also had already decided when I put Sadie Pengaree in Death's Dominion that she would have wizarding relatives, then little Suzie came along, and I thought that with her funny family, she certainly would have an eccentric Great-aunt Sadie!I enjoyed writing the different reactions, so I'm glad you enjoyed reading them! Thanks!
Work's been crazy. I had no idea I'd been away so long, but on the up side I have lots to read. Susie cracks me up wanting to come to detention willingly. I love Severus' attitude toward everything being away from the story for a little while it really stands out to me how much he's relaxing into life now and how good that is to read. I love his interactions with Minerva and Albus, so fun to see all their different personalitites interacting good naturedly. That letter from Lucious is just awful. How selfish of him to go on about this secret and not say what the hell it is.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yep, Lucius is one selfish guy, you're right!Severus is definitely relaxing into life, even if he has occasional moments of discomfort or falling back into an old habit.Glad Suzie gave you a smile! Thanks for the review! And glad to see you! Have fun catching up!
I love Poppy. LMAO Lucious is a self-serving prick! Her advice is very good. I hope Severus can follow it. (I hope I can too because I am intrigued by what that secret may be.) Oh Albus, has no clue does he? Still looking forward to that dinner party though. It's bound to be entertaining. I'm glad Poppy was able to get rid of him. I'm glad Poppy confessed how much she's miss Severus. Those middle name guesses are hysterical. Where do you come up with these? Brilliant!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Every time I thought of an outlandish name (especially beginning with "S"), I put it in a list so that my characters could refer to it later! LOL! Severus is going the floral and quasi-religious route, for the most part, and Poppy's thinking up names that sound pureblooded to her -- though she changes that strategy to alternate, and she'll change again a bit later on. haha!Albus is cheerfully clueless! But well-meaning!Glad you enjoyed the chapter!
thanks for updating! it was a great chapter, I love it that they can enjoy each other so well and not only in bed lol. It was a very nice chapter, sweet and warm, it's wonderful that they can have some time alone finally. I'm so very curious about Poppy's middle name, I tried searching RaM for her full name but it wasn't there, smart woman! lol I'll have to wait and see if Severus can guess it. It was so mean of you to finish the chapter there! it was getting interesting lol. I can't wait to read more. thanks for updating!Sam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Bwahaha! Nope, I don't think her name appears anywhere in anything I've posted on the web. You can guess along with Severus, if you want! I'm glad that you enjoyed the chapter! I decided that I really wanted to put the main part of the lemon in the next chapter and start off with it, but I'm glad you enjoyed the way the lemon has started! Thanks for the review!
Another wonderful, well-written chapter. I enjoy all of your stories.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you very much! I appreciate the encouragement! :-)
it was so sweet to follow Severus' and Poppys preparations for their lunch, and a vane Severus. The sex was hot as allways
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Writing Severus trying to get "dressed up" for the date was fun. Glad you liked the sex here -- more to come in the next chapter!Thank you for reviewing! :-)
I'm so glad you updated! My week has been dreadful so far, well, except for the fact that my gf's with me, lol. But we're both sick which unfortunatly doesn't stop the necessity of studying =/Anyway, I enjoyed reading a new chapter, although I can't wait for the next one^^I liked the description of the way Poppy saw her colleagues act during the departure of the students. Especially Albus, with his far away expresion, cute. I always think of him as a perfect grandfather, what a pity that he and Minerva don't have any children of their own in this story...but then again it suits them better not to have any, cause it'd be logical. And I also have to say most stories I read so far, in which the two of them are parents, were rather bad. Probably because most authors write them OOC. No, it really suits them better not to have any... ;)Oh and whilst talking about MMAD, how are your plans concerning them? I mean, I kind of start missing more interaction between them^^ - ah, but there's Albus' evening coming up, I forgot, lolI hope RL hasn't been too hard at you?Greetings from Germany ;)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I can totally relate to your cruddy week. I'm having a bad month. However, the month's not over yet, so it could get better. Or worse. I'm glad your gf is there to commiserate and keep things from being too dreadful!Yes, it is sad that they never had children of their own, but I feel the same way you do -- it would be too out of canon (as much as I adore AU) for me to write them as parents. And there are a ton of OOC ADMM fics out there. I don't mind a bit of OOC, but some of them, well, I won't go there . . . I enjoy expanding the characters, but while trying to keep the core character still there. Of course, it's also fun to imagine a canon background for a character and then see how the character might develop if things in their lives go a particular way -- like with Severus or Draco.Yep, Albus's evening is coming up in this Part of the fic. Should be fun, but with a large cast of characters, writing it will require more concentration than I can muster at this point. Heck, even writing Sev & Poppy together is taxing. But I'll make an effort! :-)Thanks for your review! I'm glad you're still enjoying the story! :-)
oooh, this was HOT, everytime this two get together is steamy and hot, nice very nice. I loved it that Minerva very quickly understood what was happening lol, she's a smart one. I'm so happy they finally have some time togethe, I'm sure they'll be having lots and lots of fun, I can't wait. Thanks for the update, I'm ansious for the next chapter :DSam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it. My life has been a bit chaotic lately, so I haven't had the writing time and energy I'd like to have. I'm glad you're still reading and looking forward to the chapters! Thanks for reviewing!
Whew! There was some steam forming on my computer screen here! I love it when those two finally get together. It's always HOT HOT HOT, even when they're just doing some heavy petting or teasing. I was beginning to think I was going to have to beg and plead for an update and now I know I am if you don't update soon!!As for Suzie ... I'm glad she's allowed to tell her godmother about being a witch. I'm sure she's going to have a lot of fun telling her all about Severus Snape, too. tee hee. Thanks for the steamy update!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! I'm glad you enjoyed the lemon. They do enjoy each other, don't they? *smirk* The sex will be just as hot in the next chapter -- maybe even more so -- so you might think about a fan. Or a fire extinguisher. Thanks for the review! (And it is fun to have Suzie make another appearance!)
YUM, YUM, YUM!!!!I love it when Severus and Poppy get together and get all warm and cozy. Darn Albus for interrupting them, though. Shouldn't he be in his own rooms with Minerva getting all warm and cozy????? Sigh. Seems like he's always "visiting" someone instead of staying home. Silly wizard!I do think it's hilarious that Albus is trying to set up Severus with Poppy and they're already together. tee hee. Thanks for the update. This was a great start to my weekend!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yep, he should definitely spend more time up in the Headmistress's Tower and less time socializing with Severus! haha! I'm glad you found that amusing that he's trying to set up a couple that's already a couple. He's so well-intentioned, though!I hope you have a great weekend! Thanks for the review!
this was very sweet. I also wory about the attacs and am looking forward to knowing what Lucius Malfoy know
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Malfoy's letter did raise some questions, didn't it?I'm glad you found it sweet! There will be more about the attacks eventually.Thank you very much for reviewing!
