Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Severus seems like he needs about a six month nap to get some energy back.He has sort of, but not really accept his own feelings about Hermione. Nothing like feeling that he has to compete with a younger, just as intelligent, but really good looking man for her affections. This man needs hugging on a regular basis.

Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! Severus will get some naptime in -- and eventually, he'll gets lots of hugs, too.I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! Thanks for the review!
Severus definitely needed a little "care therapy" and this was a very touching and sympathetic sequence. I certainly wasn't expecting this particular situation, but Gareth's actions didn't seem at all out of place, just a product of true caring and aiding of intimacy/lowering constructed barriers. Also, I do view Gareth as a "hands-on" more extraverted type, so it all seemed quite fitting. Definitely interested to see how this effects the Severus/Hermione dynamic and, since Gertrude is a major aspect of the emotions and past experiences of the scene, I'm interested in that dynamic also; Severus' feelings regarding his past actions are very palpable. Thanks for the update :)

Thanks,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm glad that you liked it and found it touching. :) Gareth is a real "hands-on" type, you're right. You'll get to see him with Gertrude & Hermione in the next chapter. Thanks very much for the review!
That was really intense. Gareth was taking some risk in pushing Severus's boundaries so far. But he chose his moment well, at a time when Severus was feeling so vulnerable. I hope this breakthrough in allowing intimacy is a lasting one.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I think it's pretty lasting, more or less, if very uncomfortable for Severus as he tries to understand and cope with his feelings and with intimacy of different sorts with various people in his life. Thanks much for the review! I'm glad you liked it!
First of all, it was my pleasure to read the chapter first and give you my feedback and opinion on it. I'm always willing to be a GLM for you! lolI love the interaction between Gareth and Snape in this chapter. My, they've come a loooong way since that first meeting in "Aunt Minerva's office." I don't know why but the interaction here between them is somewhat unexpected and yet it feels right for the two of them. The way you described what was happening and the reassuring way Gareth continued to assure Snape it wasn't sexual but more about getting him to loosen up was lovely. I'm sure that is part of what allowed the very reserved Snape to let down his guard and to truly start feeling emotions he'd buried long ago. You did a FANTASTIC job with describing the scene both delicately and with taste befitting the scene and circumstances.I know for a fact that the upcoming chapters are more wonderful than this one and that you've been polishing them since the rough draft. I can't wait for you to share them with the rest of your readers so they, too, can enjoy the other scenes.Hugs, the GLM
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hugs back! You know how important it was to me to hit the right notes in this and the ensuing chapters. I'm glad you think it polished up nice and pretty! I think you'll be pleased with the others. :)I appreciate the review! It's good to have a little GLM out there! Thanks!
Gareth is quite an interesting character. I'm glad he wants to help Snape, I'm quite sure that's what he's doing. I do wonder about his methods, but he is careful to check and make sure Snape is okay with everything. So I enjoyed it. I await each chapter with some impatience because this is an excellent story.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Snape goes through a lot of different twists and turns on his path over the next several chapters. Then it's not a smooth path even after that, but that's to be expected, I suppose, as he's feeling his way after living such a constrained life. Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it! (And yes, Gareth only wants what's best for Severus -- probably even more so than Severus himself!)
what a lovely chapter. I liked the therapeutic interaction between Gareth and Severus, what a great friend he has got in him. now looking forward to the date with Hermione
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
That will be in a couple of chapters. Severus's romantic life kind of begins to hiccup to a start in Part Three, but the more "Romance" part of the fic starts in Part Four and picks up speed in Part Five. Of course, it doesn't go smoothly, but who could expect it to? ;)I'm really glad you liked the interaction between Gareth and Severus. Their relationship will continue to change and go through stages, but it will be a support to Severus. Thanks for the review!
No pitchfork although I may have to get one if Poppy doesn't stop saying how unattracted to Robert she is. He is Reginald and Gertrude's son so he can't be that bad looking, IMO. She was quite opinionated in this chapter. I feel sorry for Cahill. That gives another dimension to his character. Glad Severus mentioned the kiss with Helena. It wasn't a big deal but I think it would have weighed on his conscience. On to the next chapter. Thank you.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, the conversations have all been with different people at widely separated times -- and he's decent looking, but she just never thought of him that way, particularly since he's married, and it was a shock for her to find this guy she'd not felt a bit of a stirring of attraction for suddenly lighting her fire, so to speak. LOL!Yep, that weighed on his mind, and he felt uncomfortable about doing anything with Helena without mentioning something about it to Poppy.I'm glad you have the next chapter to enjoy! ;-) I hope you do, anyway! haha! Thanks for the review!
A lovely birthday and a very touching chapter. Love Twiskett; and Hermione's desire to rush after Severus, wise or not, was very sweet; the scene with Albus and Minerva too. :)

Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I really appreciate it! And I'm very glad you liked those particular bits! Since I'm starting to post the little "Suzie Sefton" story, the next chapter of LVS won't be up for about a week this time. Probably I'll post it over the weekend. But don't panic if you don't see it!Thanks again for the review!
oh, how sweet.so how many parts are going to be in this story? just curious. :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Nine, I think. It may end up being eight, but probably nine. I am most of the way through seven. Thanks for the review! Glad you liked the chapter! (I won't be posting another chapter of LVS until the weekend, since I'm starting to post the Suzie Sefton story this week -- it's just a short little fic of about 3 chaps -- and I posted the first chapter yesterday. I didn't want to wait tooooo long to post the next chapter of LVS, though.)Thanks for the review!
I'm so glad Severus had a happy birthday full of presents and friends who care for him. I love, absolutely adore, the way you are developing the relationship between Hermione and Severus. Her crush on him is very sweet, and I suppose she is too sensible to take offense or be crushed by his stiffness. But still, I imagine she agonized over the inscription on the flyleaf. Wanting to sign it "Love, Hermione" but afraid to reveal too much of herself. And doing so anyway, when she let slip the real reason she bought the Halloween book with his pictures. She's a brave girl, and I hope he doesn't crush her feelings by accident. And some other random thoughts:I wonder how much Gareth knows or suspects about Hermione's crush? It sounds like he might have been deliberately teasing her by piddling around on the computer while she was getting more and more anxious about leaving for their lunch date with Severus. He was really making poor Professor Carter work for that little bit of small talk. Somebody needs to make him practice his conversational skills! The duel with Gareth will be fun. Somehow I suspect it won't be as one-sided as Severus thinks. And did I mention how adorable Twiskett is? I'd love to carry him around in my pocket.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
"And did I mention how adorable Twiskett is? I'd love to carry him around in my pocket."LOL! I love that! Severus finds him kinda cute, too, despite himeslf!Yeah, Hermione has quite the little crush going on Severus, and Gareth is like the big brother who teases her a bit. They do live in the same house, so I'm sure Gareth's pretty clued-in about what's going on in her head. He's not like some of the boys she hung around with at Hogwarts. I think that Severus will try to be sensitive to her feelings -- as well as his own, whatever they might turn out to be. After all, he's had more than enough experience in alienating people who might have been close friends if he'd let them, and he's trying not to repeat the mistakes of the past even if he is a bit stiff, nervous, and inexperienced. But he'll have help getting over his fear of letting anyone close . . .Thanks for the review! BTW, don't know if you saw it, but the Suzie Sefton story is posting now, so I won't be posting another chapter of LVS until the weekend. (I don't want LVS to lose too much steam.)
This was wonderful. Poor Severus is so overwhelmed by his own emotions sometimes. I'm glad there are so many people to fuss over him on his birthday.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He had far more people fussing over him than he'd expected, too! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it so much!
What a nice chapter, I do believe Severus had fun and is overwhelmed by that fact.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You're right -- he had fun and felt loved! Completely overwhelming. Thanks for the review!
Sounds like Snape had a rather grand birthday! It must have been hard for him to really celebrate a birthday all those years of being a spy and now that he's free to experience life, it's a huge adjustment.I loved the gifts he received, too. Very thoughtful gifts, especially the pin from Albus' father (Snape might not have known if it hadn't been for Minerva) and then the book Hermione gave him with the inscription from Albus. I'm looking forward to the duel details, especially the bit between Snape and Albus. lolThanks for the sneak peeks into the other chapter. I'm very intrigued!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Still intrigued by it? *grin*He did have a good birthday, and it was simply and literally an incredible experience for him. I'm glad you liked it!It'll be a while before we get to the duels, but I hope you enjoy them when we do! (I practically sweat blood over chapters like that -- it's worse than writing a lemon! lol!)Thanks for the review! Hope you have a great week!
Ooooohwell thank you for a lovely fluffy-but-not-too-saccarine end to this installment! Can't wait to see Suzie Sefton again and for you to share the next installment.xLx
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! Suzie should be making her appearance very shortly.
I am finding it so interesting to read all of Severus' reactions to the social world. He didn't learn social skills in the normal way, though I expect at some point he was capable of it. I'm fascinated with this idea because I have a child with asperger syndrome. He is very awkward in social situations but unlike Snape, he LOVES being around people. He has had to learn social skills mostly by rote memorization of specific situations and then generalizing to other situations. It's much more difficult this way because generalizing can get one in big trouble. Snape is learning by watching what other people do and then attempting to do something similar. He's like a lot of asperger people in that he really WANTS to be social now that he has the opportunity, but he's not sure how and it's very scary. The big difference is that he can understand facial expressions and body language very well and can imitate social behavior. It's the psychologist and mom of a kid on the autism spectrum in me that makes this part of the story so amazing.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you found that aspect of the chapter (and story) so resonant with your own knowledge and experience. Thanks!Asperger's must be very difficult to live with -- it's hard to imagine what it must be like for someone -- but it's great that it's understood so much better these days. I'm glad that your son sounds like he's making progress. I'm sure that having a loving family and friends around him helps a lot! Thanks very much for the review!
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I like to tell people that asperger syndrome is no easier to live with than severe autism for the person who suffers it. In some ways it's harder for people with asperger syndrome because in most ways they seem so "normal" and "typical" but then they say something odd or they react strangely to certain stimuli or they keep talking when nobody wants to discuss the topic that interests them. Asperger Syndrome is definitely easier for parents than severe autism, I believe. It has some bad days but if you know what to do it can be fun and wonderful. Kind, supportive and understanding people who can be calm when a kid is completely freaking out for some inexplicable reason are necessary. They're frightened by their own emotions a lot of the time, I think. If I act just as angry then he's frightened of himself AND me. I've had to work hard to figure all of this out and I have a degree in psychology and prior experience working with autistic people. It's not the same when it's your own kid, though.Anyway, I think Snape being kind of an outsider and ostracized pretty much from the day he was born just has made me feel a lot of empathy for him. It wouldn't have taken as much work as my son did for Snape to get the social skills he needed and everyone let him down. But he's putting that away and moving forward. People get caught up in blaming everyone in the past and that just doesn't cut it with me. If you're an adult it's time to take responsibility. I grew up in a crappy environment but I don't sit around blaming my parents. I do sit around blaming Snape's parents, though. Hey, it's fiction, I can amuse myself with it in any way I like. LOL. As much as I see parallels in my own life I also use fanfiction as an escape when I'm stressed. Thanks for writing this amazing series! I think I've read pretty much all the stories that came before this one.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
"I grew up in a crappy environment but I don't sit around blaming my parents. I do sit around blaming Snape's parents, though. Hey, it's fiction, I can amuse myself with it in any way I like. LOL."I loved that -- I actually laughed. I know what you mean. (Except that I was fortunate and had great parents.) But sitting around and dwelling in the past and on what other people did to you -- whether true, relevant, or whatever -- isn't a productive way to get on with life. That doesn't mean that I don't empathize with people who find it difficult or near-impossible to get past certain events or traumas -- or even entire periods of their lives -- and so forth, but that's my own personal philosophy for my own life given my own disposition.I'm very glad you've been enjoying the series. You might like the Suzie Sefton story I'm going to begin posting today. It's a light little fic, nothing particularly serious. Thanks again!
Yes this was a wonderful birthday you gave Severus. I like your Severus very much, and all the other characters as well. I like your stories are "slow" and softspoken and the way you have Severus enjoying life, little steps at a time. Looking forward to the updating, the new chaptertitels are promising.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm glad you're still enjoying it!
What a wonderful birthday for Severus, spent with all those who care about him. Definitely not what he's used to, so its no wonder he got emotional. Thank you for the sneak peak at part 3 - can't wait to read it!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
And there were more who cared about him than he'd thought, too! Thanks very much! Glad you liked it!I'm glad you liked the little sneak peek at the next part. I will probably start posting "The Sorting of Suzie Sefton" tomorrow or Tuesday, if you'd like to take a look at that. I'm not sure when I'll post the next chapter of LVS, but likely by next weekend so the momentum isn't too diluted. Thanks again for the review, Esmelle!
Twiskett is a wonderful little house elf for Severus and very efficient. Wish I had a house elf to take care of me so I didn't have to worry about a thing.I loved Minerva's little party. Seems like she had a grand time playing with the charmed mistletoe. I have to say, though, that I'm glad she waited until the end of the evening to capture Albus under the mistletoe with her. That was a very sweet and perfect ending. And for all of Snape's grumbles, he seemed to have a good time as well. I'm sure it wasn't an easy situation for him since he's not used to socializing much, but overall, I'd say it went well.Heck yes, we want a preview! I know I am a GLM and I'm sure there are other meeses out there. lol
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you! I think that for all the appreciative greedy meeses out there, I'll include the little preview at the end of the next chapter.Yes, Minerva thought that Albus had waited long enough -- and been "punished" enough for his crack about her wanting to kiss all the good-looking wizards -- that he should have a bit of a reward. And she didn't want to wait any longer, either. I think that everyone had a good time, and that even Severus enjoyed himself, on the Snape-scale-of-enjoyment, anyway! You know I love to write little Twiskett, so it's great to find a spot for him to pop in and be his little Twisketty self! Thanks for the review!
yay!the party was fab and I do love minerva's mischievous side.I'm really interested about the trips to StM's as well... as ever, can't wait to see where you take it :)xLx
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks.
I'll bet Severus can billow in his Lawrence of Arabia costume. Severus could probably billow in shorts and a t-shirt. Gareth probably had plenty of fun teasing him about the accessories, too. I'm not so sure Minerva is going to be pleased with Albus's costume. Doesn't she get get upset every time he glamours away his beard and long hair?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
No, she doesn't have a problem with his using a Glamour. She was worried that one time, decades before, that he'd cut off his hair and beard, and at the time, he looked un-Albusy to her. But she'll like it just fine. After all, that's the spirit of a fancy dress party! He'd be rather limited in his choices if he had to keep his beard and hair length --though they are shorter than he's worn them in a long time, they're still unusually long! The Scarlet Pimpernel is a fun sort of Muggle "superhero" for him, I thought, and rather fitting to his personality & his "barmy old wizard" persona overlaying the powerful wizard beneath. haha! Of course, she also became rather used to him beardless (among other things) when he was "Robbie", and if she can learn to deal with such a massive changein his appearance (and it was the particular appearance that he was taking, not the lack of hair or beard, or the fact that he was Polyjuiced that bothered her most), she can be amused by and attracted to his Sir Percy look! Oh, yes, the billowing! (Not swishing and swirling -- or so he says!) He does have a certain billow about his personality, doesn't he? Thanks for the review! TTFN!
Enjoyable so far. Severus seems to be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
!He has some basic depression combined with some ptsd, hardly surprising! Poor guy . . .Thanks for the review! Hope you continue to enjoy it!
Interesting, but I'm going to have to read the first book lol.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
If you mean Death's Dominion, yes, that would be an excellent idea! Glad you like it so far! Thanks!
I love Albus' custome, and can't wait until he sees Minerva in hers. Good Choice for Severus. The party should be very interesting.
Truly
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus will find it an interesting party, to be sure! ;)Glad you like the costumes! Thanks for reviewing!
All this halloween talk has really got me into the spirit of the season. I LOVE Albus' costume. tee hee. And the chat with Severus went well. That was good for both of them, I believe.Wilspy is adorable. I love how she still mothers Albus and has no problem telling him what he thinks to a certain degree.Minerva is just awesome! And their snuggle sounds like an excellent way to end the day. You know how much I love ADMM cuddle moments. awwww.Thanks for posting.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, he looks quite the dapper dandy in his Scarlet Pimpernel outfit! Glad you liked it! :DI enjoy writing Wilspy -- she wasn't above interfering in Albus's life back in RaM, either -- remember her "little breeze" while she was "dusting"? lolYep, he and Severus are back on the road to a more solid, closer relationship!Glad you enjoyed the prospect of an ADMM cuddle moment! Thanks!
Glad that Severus is letting go of the past...I'd like to thank you for the quick posting. Obviously, too much time between chapter interrupts the momentum of the story. Usually I try not to read WIP's, because I hate waiting. I am surprised however that I like this better than reading a completed fic. Usually once I start a story, I CANNOT stop reading until it is finished. I have spent entire weekends doing nothing but reading. This is the perfect balance of having a life outside of reading fanfiction and keeping up with a good story. Thank you for setting my limits for me.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I know what you mean about WIPs. Sometimes, so much time passes between updates, I have to go back and either reread a chapter or two before the new one or, if it's been a really long time, sometimes even the entire fic! There may be a little bit more of a delay between chapters than usual this time, since I'll be out of town and don't know if I'll be able to update while I'm gone. Thanks for the review! I'm very glad you're enjoying the fic!
