Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Poor Draco doesn't quite get it, does he? He's trying to overcome the prejudices he was raised with, but it hadn't occurred to him that he ought to strive to look beyond the matter of blood purity. I'm glad he has Severus to guide him, and glad you've given him the opportunity for redemption. I hope we see more of him.The Halloween conversation between Severus and Minerva was fun. Perhaps they ought to go as those famous muggle actors, Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith? Actually, I was thinking of more modern muggle scientists, like Charles Darwin and Madame Curie. Or maybe Neil Armstrong and Sally Ride. Minerva's illness is a little concerning. I hope it's not anything serious, and I especially hope she tells Albus. It's no fun to find out someone you love has been hiding their illness from you and depriving you the pleasure of fussing over them!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
We do get to see Draco again, but not for a while. It's good for Severus, too, to be able to help him. I'm not going to give their costumes away, but I hope you will enjoy them! Severus puts a little more thought into his and gets some help with it. ;-) (One of your suggestions was particularly interesting -- you'll know which one in a couple of chapters!)Minerva will take Severus's advice and tell Albus, but try not to worry him about it. You're right -- it's no fun finding out that someone you love has not told you about something like that! Thanks very much for your review! Glad you enjoyed the chapter!

A great start into the second part. Severus seems to adapt rather well, and it is very sweet and joyful to see how he also can act as a kind of counsel to Albus. That's a very good sign for his moving on, I think, as well as for him maturing.
From the storytelling point of view it's good to have these feelings of Albus' come to light. It was to be expected; after all, he's probably the last person who would find it easily to go back so much paces and stay there contentedly. I do wonder, though, why they don't do it the other way round - having a nice cottage somewhere where Albus lives and potters about, doing what he wants, and in the evenings and at weekends he floos "home" to Minerva, spending time with her. It would be a very modern and advanced way of living, though. ;o)
I'm looking forward to this relationship changing and evolving, too. Perhaps to a proper friendship, too?
Author's Response: Yep, their relationship is evolving, and there will be some bumps along the way, but they'll grow closer.
Albus & Minerva do have their cottage, but Albus would find it a lonely place to be if he weren't sharing it as a home with her. He could, of course, work at other things then Apparate to Hogwarts in the evenings, but that didn't occur to him as an option, and as he said, he had really believed that he would enjoy being a simple teacher more than he is. Don't worry, though, they'll find other ways of working around his sense of being at sea in his new role!
Thank you for the review! Glad you liked the chapter!

Aaah, this is such a lovely scene. Am I right with the impression that Severus, for once, secretly enjoys it to be i bed, be coddled and looked after? Even if he would rather die than confess to it.
Of course, I'm really, really happy that he is well again and has gotten everything behind himself without lingering problems or any damage. The letter thing shows really a new man - he is quite changing, now that he has the chance to and the strength for it.
Author's Response: Yes, he does like being coddled and looked after, though you're right -- he'd rather not admit it! And he isn't completely aware of it, but he also wants the sense that he's being taken care of because he's cared for, and not simply because he's an obligation.
Yes, he is changing, both naturally as a result of the changed circumstances and as a result of his own decision to try to live differently and better than he had in the past.
Very glad you liked it! Thanks!
oh this was so funny. Severus with spindly legs and not nice knees ( in his own opinion) looking forward to see how he and Minerva will dress up
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Yes, Severus and his knees and embarrassment about his legs. As you say, it's his opinion of them, though. You'll see their costumes! There's a couple of Halloween chapters. Hope you enjoy them, too! Thanks for the review!
I so love the idea of Albus having a playroom. Oh dear, my mind just went to the lemon tree orchard with that one. lol Yeah, I know, I'm hopeless! I love Draco's new name. "New Man" suits him very well. It's interesting to see him taking a muggle born under his wings and looking out for her.Minerva and Severus discussing Halloween costumes was hilarious! I do so love your stories!Hugs, the GLM
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Ah, yes, I'm sure you would be thinkingabout the different kinds of "playing" he could get up to! LOL!Draco certainly is making a great effort to become his better self! Glad you liked his name. Severus is having more fun, even if he's loath to admit it right now, and he enjoyed talking with Minerva about Halloween and making plans with her, as opposed to doing everything all on his own simply out of obligation. Thanks for the review!
This is gonna be fun. I can't wait for the Halloween party. But what of Hermione? I hope we have more of her in the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Glad you're enjoying it! The Halloween party will be eventful for Severus, certainly. Not yet! It's Severus's story, so we're following him even when he's at school, seeing what's up with his life and how he's adjusting. If you look back at the list of chapter titles for this section, I'm pretty sure I listed the primary characters for each chapter. Anyway, she'll be returning again before Part Three begins. Thanks for reviewing!
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I'm sure you listed the characters. I just read chapters without looking at the character lists most of the time. DOH. Silly me. Anyway, yes, it is Severus's story. Still, I do enjoy his interactions with Hermione a lot. Thanks!Mim
I know the story is long over and completed so there’s not much point to it, but I have to say I really don't like the way Gareth is nagging and nagging and nagging at Snape's feelings. Who appointed him Snape’s psychiatrist, anyway? I don't consider it a friend's business to dig at a friend's feelings when the friend clearly shows he doesn't want his feelings dug at. Even if Gareth is right that it would do Snape good to be poked and prodded and picked at, he doesn't have any right to do so when Snape is not willing. Snape did not come for a scheduled therapy session. He came to see Hermione without going inside the house. Period.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's not completed yet -- it is still a WIP (TPP has a feature that marks completed stories as being complete). And there's a long backstory to this relationship and to this particular Severus in earlier stories that brings us to this moment. If Severus wished to leave, he could. The point is, he did want and need the help, and so he did not leave and he said "stop" once, Gareth stopped, but then Severus decided to continue. If he didn't want it, Severus could have left at any time. He does, in fact, stick around for lunch and an afternoon tour of the house, helping him to come to terms with a part of his past he hadn't wanted to face. Gareth is a good friend to Severus, and he knows this about Severus, even though Severus would never admit it at this point. (And personally, I do like friends who truly care about me and who don't want me to founder when they could help.)And you're right, regardless of where the story is at any point that someone reads it, it is pointless to attempt to influence any of my multi-chaptered fics through a review: I write the stories based on a long-planned plot line and have an outline and plan for the stories and characters, so it's not a "choose your own adventure story." Some authors do enjoy writing that way, I'm sure.I'm sure I must have simply overlooked any earlier reviews pointing out things you enjoyed before you decided you didn't like something. I do hope that you were enjoying at least some of Severus's postwar/post-Death's-Dominion journey until then.Hope you find another story on TPP more to your liking! This one is all about Severus growing beyond his past, particularly his past as a Death Eater, and there's a fairly good dose of Gareth and Gertrude to come, and of Severus gaining the ability to live without being crippled by his feelings of guilt. There will likely be many other well-written stories here that may be more to your taste. Enjoy them! Cheers!
Response from Very Small Prophet (Reviewer)
Just because I was bugged by one aspect of a couple of chapters doesn’t mean I dislike the whole story. I wouldn’t be all the way beyond Chapter Twenty-Nine if I did. I’m starting to get annoyed with Gareth and his wonderful understanding, but a reader is not expected to like every character in a work of fiction. My apologies if I gave offence by expressing my opinion too brusquely. I tend to do that, sort of like our beloved potions master.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's not that you didn't like something a specific character did -- all my characters will do thing at times that different people won't like, and I don't endorse all that they do, either -- but two aspects of the review: 1)"I know the story is long over and completed so there’s not much point to it," -- sounds like you wish you could have me change the chapter & that I might do that if the story weren't completed (which it isn't -- it is still a WIP), and as though that were the point of reviewing a fic, to tell the author the direction you want a story to take; and 2) all you mentioned was what you didn't like in that one chapter.JUst in case you actually might consider continuing to read the story, I wished to point out that there will be more similar occasions in the future and that Severus becoming reconciled with his feelings about having been a Death Eater, and specifically what he did to Gertrude, so you could avoid it if you don't like it. I also took the time to explain the "Severus side" of the chapter so you realize that Severus isn't a wimp who couldn't manage to have walked out if he'd wanted to, or that Gareth was somehow forcing him to stay.
Every time I read this chapter, I feel so sad when I read the conversation between Albus and Severus. I can't help it. I have a lot of empathy for Albus, sniff sniff. For him to feel useless just breaks my heart. And while I understand Minerva's desire to run the school and her sense of dusy and position, it breaks my heart that she didn't feel she could leave the school for a weekend with her husband. I'm glad they all intervened and told her she was going. Sad that she had to be told, but at least they'll get a little holiday. Thanks for updating!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
She wanted to go, she simply didn't believe it would be prudent or that it would look appropriate to go off for the weekend. I don't think she minded being talked into it!Yep, Severus was able to help Albus a bit with his sense of being "past it" and bored, as well. But if he wants to be supportive of Minerva now, he's got to figure out how to deal with his new situation. Fortunately, he's very aware of all that she sacrificed for him over the years -- but that also makes him feel guilty for wishing things could be different. Not a happy position to be in! But he has time to work it out. :-)Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed the re-read!
Poor Albus. Even the most selfless person would have a hard time standing by while someone else took over the leadership of the school and wizarding world that he loves and has sacrificed so much for. It's interesting how Severus completely lost his antisocial awkwardness when he realized how his friends needed him and he had problems to solve. I'm glad they're mending their friendship, and even more so that they are redefining their relationship, rather than falling back into their old roles with one another.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Albus is having a tough time of it, and feeling guilty about having a tough time, on top of it all. Severus and Albus are gradually mending their relationship, and they will get closer. That's not to say there might not be a few hiccups along the way, though! We'll have to wait and see . . .Severus enjoyed being needed in a different way than he was used to, and he did enjoy helping his friends. Of course, the centaur mead may have helped a bit, too! LOL!Thanks for reviewing!

Great new chapters. The backstory of Severus's dad is great, and I'm loolking forward what's going to come of this.
Author's Response: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them!
it was so sweet, even Severus was sweet ( don't tell him I wrote that) - it is understandable that Albus has a difficult time now, it is allways somewat difficult to "retire" - and he has for many years had his finger in every important decisionmaking. Lovely chapter

Thank you,

! And I won't whisper a word to Severus! ;-)I'm glad you enjoyed it!
LOL, very powerful mead indeed!

Yeah, it got Snape practically mushy! haha! Thanks for reviewing!
Happy Minerva's birthday!!and what better way to celebrate than with a chapter in whcih she has a part. lol Yeah, grasping at straws but a MM lover has to do what she has to do. Severus and Poppy are so cute together and I am glad she came back a little early to spend some time with him. And now Albus is gone to see Potter so that means Minerva is alone. sigh. I found the conversation she had with Gareth very informative and I can't wait to see how the talk goes with Gareth and Severus. Thanks for updating.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
And I hope you had a Happy Minerva's Birthday! You know I enjoy writing Minerva, so I'm glad I was able to share that with you!Well, Minerva will have a good time having drinks with her nephew and her friends for a bit, and he'll be home soon!I'm glad you're looking forward to the conversation between Gareth & Snape -- I am, too! lol! Thanks for reviewing! :-) (Or should I say, "CFR"?)

damn, how long will this story be? not that im complaining. actually, just the opposite. the longer the better. :D but its good to know that he's getting better. finally! and writing letters to people? thanking them? he really has turned over a new leaf, even if he himself hasnt realized it.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Glad you're not complaining! LOL! 'Cause it's much longer. He is certainly trying to turn over a new leaf. We'll see how far he gets! He'll have help along the way. Thanks!
Wow. Excellent. Great banter with Poppy and Severus. And yea, Part two. Looking forward to it.Truly

Ah, so my suspicions were on track with the mystery at Spinner's End. Another interesting wrinkle. :) I'll be looking forward to seeing how this comes into play. Wonderful chapter. I'm glad Severus is still going forward with his plans for Poppy and I can't wait to read about their holiday and the discovery of the red roses. I enjoyed the references to Charming the Scottish Garden. Another grand story of yours. Maybe someday I'll learn how Johannes finally wooed and won Soifre. Thanks so much for these wonderful updats.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I hope to work on updates to Charming the Scottish Garden soon. Johannes & Siofre deserve a bit of my time, too, I think!I hope you enjoy this strand of the story about Drusus, Eileen, and Tobias. You're welcome! I'm very glad that you enjoyed them! I know it's been a long time. I'm glad you're still with the story!

Gareth's mysterious discovery is intriguing. "space-time malleability in Arithmantic charms" whoa! impressive! =) You know I love your theories on magic. I adored the discussion on the history of Arithmantic charms. I loved this moment too...“They have not even had a single date, and you already have them procreating,” Severus said, amusement in his voice. “I also would prefer not to speak of other people’s procreation, just ours.”“Procreation?” Poppy asked. “Ours?”Severus went pink. An interesting topic indeed.... ;-)And you end with more details about Gareth finding the letter - whatever it is that's in there must be a doozy. Can't wait to read more.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Severus had a little slip there, and Poppy was quite flustered! Glad you liked that little bit. :-)It is a bit of a doozy! Thanks!

Hmm... interesting picture Gertrude figuring out about Poppy and Severus and then running interference. I like that idea somehow. Gertrude is such an amazing character and so multi dimensional, but all the characters you write original and cannon. I can't wait to read more about Gertrude in upcoming chapters and see how that plays out. It's also fun to read Poppy talking about the RaM days. Great talk between Severus and Poppy about what it could be like going public with their relationship. Kind of sad to think about, but a reality none the less. I love Poppy's reaction though reassuring him, saying she'd defend him. Soot-free floo powder - what a great idea. Of course flashing through my mind are images of people with soot smudged on them from traveling through the floo network in the movies. I like Poppy grinning when hearing about Melina oblivating the healer. Of course I'm curious to know what was "too rare to simply incinerate or discard.”Moody is always entertaining. Looking forward to the rest of your recent updates.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Gertrude is very quick, and particularly after having seen how friendly Poppy was with Severus at the party, and knowing that she wasn't speaking of Quin, she made the connection that it had to be Severus. Not that she would say anything -- "discretion" is practically Gertrude's middle name, after all!I always thought it was funny how messy Floo travel could be, and I thought that Severus wouldn't like that much and would come up with a Floo Powder that would keep soot from smudging up him & his clothes. Glad you liked that! It's fun to write Moody, all blunt & a bit suspicious -- well, a wee bit paranoid, too! Thanks very much!

Always good to see an update from you - no matter the work.My curiosity is piqued again as the plot thickens - but Squibby said it much cooler than I can. Many questions - many notions - many wonders - and I am interested to see what Moody gets up to with Mr. Potter - and wonder why on earth Potter is working at a Muggle shop doing manual labor??? Perhaps I don't remember the explanation since my memory is going the way of the Dodo - but something just doesn't seem to jive with that to me.I want to know more about what Hermione is up to as well, and where is Ron? But mostly I want to know what's going on with Snape Sr. and Severus' mother - weird!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
If you want to know more about Harry & his Muggle job (which was supposed to just be a temporary thing that he did to unwind and have a break from everything, but which has now dragged on for months), it's mentioned in a couple different chapters of Draco's Heart, including the one where Ron visits Harry. I don't have the story handy at the moment, but I think the chapter title has Grimmauld Place in it. The bits in Draco's Heart are actually chronologically after the Easter holiday. You can also see what Hermione is up to, see Ron, see Luna, and catch up with more folks than just Draco & Ginny, if you're interested. The chapters are all pretty short in that fic.Yes, there is a lot that Severus will learn about his father after he gets back from his holiday -- or he will if he will look at what Gareth's unearthed! And we'll learn what he does -- it is all very mysterious! Thanks for the review!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
As my son would say "thats so mysterious!" It was a word he fell in love with from his show "Backyardigans"

Ah, the thick plottens.Am looking forward to the duel between Severus and Gareth. I have a feeling that Gareth is a better duelist than he makes out, as Snape suspects.Tell me Poppy's middle name isn't Pudenda...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I can safely reassure you that her middle name is not Pudenda. Now you can sleep soundly knowing that, I'm sure!Oh, yes, much plottening going on. Ya think maybe Gareth's trying to lower expectations? Or maybe he's a bit nervous? Or perhaps a bit of both? But I agree, I think he can do just fine! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

First my bit of sillyness--when Aine revealed that the perpetrator is a female and Severus knows her, my brain immediately took a left turn and went "Oh how cool, it's Hermione! Miss know-it-all perfect 'I can do anything' in everybodys elses stories is a murderess. Woot! Sorry, my brain does that sometimes but I did enjoy my two minutes of relishing the idea. I have to say that I am really enjoying how you've several characters who are Seers and they are presented well, like basically normal people. I always thought it funny that HP was based on this serious prophecy, the be all and end all, but the subject and person (Trelawny) was treated as such a farce. So good job! I'm also enjoying how you've expanded the field beyond tea leaves and crystal balls. And I'm liking Aine. You do seem to have a knack at making secondary (and even tertiary) characters interesting and filled will life, leaving us wanting to know more. In someone elses comment when they asked for more Aine you said "Maybe we will see more of her, you never know!" Well obviously, Aine does!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Heeheehee! That was a funny one there! I like your left turn. *chuckles for a bit before returning to the review*Yes . . . Seers, house-elves, all sorts of characters I thought I'd find annoying to write, but actually turned out okay once the characters actually arrived on the page. So I'm glad you like the Seers in these stories. And you're right that it's kind of funny (both peculiar & ha-ha) that the primary Seer is treated as a farce and divination in general is a source of amusement. Of course, there's a long tradition of Seers being ignored, etc., but that's a bit different from them being more objects of amusement than anything else.I'm glad you like Aine! And yes, Aine knows . . . Aine probably knows more than the author! lol! Thanks for the reviews! It was lovely to see them when I got up this morning. Hope you continue to enjoy the story!
Yay! Max has been unveiled. Good conversation there, especially with Poppy picking up the reins when she knew Severus wanted to know more but wasn't comfortable asking. And way to go Minerva for lessening his discomfort about Quin. See, his ladies are looking out for him.The banter between Poppy and Severus was well done and all the conversation in general. My favorite: “After you,” Severus said, with a slight bow. Poppy laughed. “Chicken?” “Not at all. Merely exercising one of the few polite manners I possess.”He is so suave. No wonder I like him so much!!!
Response from Phyllidia (Reviewer)
Ooh I forgot to add my guess as to what Gertrude & Severus were talking about (since I did so well guessing that Gareth was Max......) I think Gertrude wants to help get Milicent's injury sorted out (maybe funding & sending her to America for treatment), not wanting it to color her future as Gertrude's injury did her. And she has approached Severus to help facilitate.I was going to ask you if Severus was secretly 'squeeing' inside when he met "Max" but I see you already answered my question in one of the other reviews. He is SUCH a fanboy......
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, yes, he certainly was squeeing a bit! But reining himself in. As you say, good that his witches are looking out for him!Your guess about what Gertrude wanted . . . well, it's partially correct. You have picked up on one bit of it, though not the motivation. However, you'll see it soon! Glad that it's intriguing you!
Albus does like to meddle doesn't he? I wonder if he'll be secretly grumpy when he finds out he didn't have all the information. For some reason, when he meddles in personal affairs I see him in curlers and a housecoat.Good chapter building up anticipation for the socializing.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He does like to see "a happy ending," as he put it! And now that he doesn't have anything of earth-shaking proportions to have to deal with, he is trying to find other ways to encourage a happy result for Severus!Severus is going to try not to hate it, and we can see whether he succeeds or not -- with Poppy there, maybe he won't have such a hard time of it. Thanks for the review!
