New Chapter for A Long Vernal Season
A Long Vernal Season

Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
*snip*so Grandmother Siofre and Johannes adopted himAm I missing something here - did Johannes couple up with Grandmother Siofre? Isn't that an age difference of....... like 80 or 90 years?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! No, my dear, it isn't. Siofre's younger than Albus by a few years, and Johannes is older than Malcolm, who was 17 when Minerva was born. So the age difference is less than that between Albus & Minerva.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Ahhh, okay well that makes more sense... but I'm still surprised you never told us the two of them were hooking up - I mean it was hinted at in RaM but...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You could read Charming the Scottish Garden. Also, Severus doesn't really know either of them, so it's all just names to him at this point in the story. We did see them together at the Merlin awards dinner at the end of DD, but Poppy wasn't able to tell Severus much about the three of them because the speakers began.
*snip*He raised one eyebrow. “I hope you find yourself as honoured to serve others who are Slytherin.”“Of course! It was my wife’s House.” He smiled. “I was in Hufflepuff.”“Hufflepuff?” He nodded. Hufflepuff and Slytherin, what a combination, he thought. He couldn’t imagine what had drawn the two to each other, unless his wife enjoyed his devotion and knew she wouldn’t have to work too hard for it. “Yes, also a fine House. As are they all.” Oh HO! Is this a hint? *grins*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It most certainly is -- a hint of the ironic sort! (Little does Severus know!) hee!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*grins wide*
Awww, I had hoped Albus and Minerva won for best costumes! Ahh well...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, Albus was a runner-up, so to speak! I think that part of the pull for Severus was that everyone was so amazed that he'd go for a fancy dress that was colorful and flamboyant -- that he seemed to get into the spirit of the thing.
*snip*“Madame Curie,” Poppy said.“Playing against type, I presume,” Severus said drily. “What?!” She sputtered indignantly.“I simply meant that, although you are clearly not unintelligent, you are more inclined toward taking care of people, being . . .” How could he dig himself out of this one, he wondered. “Being a generously warm caregiver. Madame Curie spent her time in laboratories, not with people. She is also . . . drab. You are not. That is all I meant.”*falls over laughing*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He did manage to dig himself out, though! And by being truthful. He's a pretty good Slytherin! *wink*
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
hehehehe
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He also does like Poppy and wouldn't want to insult her.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
That's what I noticed when he came out of his magical ritual... where's Poppy, I need Poppy! I was thinking... hrmmm
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It bothered him that she wasn't there, you're definitely right about that! And he even felt a bit hurt, believing at first that she simply hadn't cared enough once he was out of danger to be there and look after him herself.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Dawwwwwww! I be thinking Severus is having a crushie on our Matron mediwitch! So adorable!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Nah . . . not yet, anyway! But he's fonder of her than he realizes!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Tee hee hee hee *grins* Can't wait to read it!
More story! And so soon!!! Yay!!!!I was worried Poppy might be gone longer than that. I'm so happy that she was able to get back and that Severus told her how he felt instead of just pouting. Plus now there's more to look forward to. I love this story beyond words!Thank you for making it something to look forward to.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yep, Severus was really good about not just sulking! I'm glad you are enjoying it so much! The next chapter is well underway, and I have started the next chapter of Charming the Scottish Garden, too, so I should be able to update one or the other of those stories this coming weekend. (Crossed fingers on that!)Thanks for the review! :-)
Wow. I bet Albus got an earful from Minerva when he got home, not to mention Shunpike and Rath. eeek! I am glad they found him and without sending the Patronus. How embarassing. It was nice to see Poppy returning to the lab and finding Severus in a much cooler mood. That sound odd, but I think if he'd been anything other than cool towards her at first, it wouldn't have seemed realistic. It goes a long way towards firming their relationship that they can be open and honest about how they're feeling. And boy were they "feeling" a lot. tee he. Looking forward to their next date. tee hee.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm sure Albus did get an earful! You're right there!Severus was feeling hurt, and he was trying not to lash out like he used to, so he was a bit distant, though at least he didn't shut down completely. He finds it hard to talk about his feelings, or feel that others will find them legitimate. It was a big deal that Poppy recognized his feelings and gae him validation -- and it was a big thing that he started off actually telling her how he felt rather tan waiting and just being grouchier and surlier and basically the old nasty Snape! They certainly were "feeling" quite a lot in this chapter! I'm glad you enjoyed it!Thanks!
I am so happy to have further story line to read in the RAM universe! RAM was one of the first fics I read and one of my favs. But being truthful I am very much a Snape fan. I am loving this story and look forward to each new chapter I get to read. I love the evolving friendships as Snape discovers his own trueself.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I can't remember if you read Death's Dominion or not, but if you didn't, you will like it, I think. It's a Snape-centric fic, and I think it's my best one -- though RaM's my favorite. DD does lose quite a bit, though, with the spoilers from LVS, since the structure and plotting are intended to create some suspense which the spoilers, um, spoil (LOL!), but I still think it's likely a good read, especially if you like this Severus, since you can see where he came from and how his relationship with Gareth began and his relationship with Hermione became more of a friendship.I'm glad you're enjoying LVS! There's a lot more to come, and I hope you continue to enjoy it!Thanks for reviewing!
For some reason, well, I know for what reason, but I feel really horrible for the Malfoys. Yeah, they were horrible, DEs and all that, but their way of life, their home, money...all gone, that's horrible. But then I always say that government whether good or bad is always looking to rip off its people (don't get me wrong, I am no anarchist and governments are necessary and created for a reason, but let's be realistic and keep our eyes open and brain functioning...), not caring if it's taking their long-held hereditary inheritance, rightfully-gained possessions or wrongfully obtained ones, all government wants is to line ITS coffers, how/whatever way. I just hate that and I feel really bad for Malfoys....the last part of the chapter just leaves a bitter aftertaste, at least for me. Nice job!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's restitution money, not just something that stays with some faceless governtment. The money is going to the Death Eaters' victims -- orphans, widows, destroyed businesses, etc. -- so it's not merely punishment. And the Ministry is renting the manor, they didn't just take it. But I can see how you can feel badly for the Malfoys. They do look a pathetic sight right now . However, they live as many others in the world do, and better than a good many do. And Draco got to keep what money was left in their accounts -- though Voldy had taken most of it. The Ministry didn't want to visit the sins of the father upon the son, as they say.I think part of the point of this chapter and the next is to contrast the fates of Severus & Lucius, and how for each of them, their own choices played a role in where they are now, and how even in their current circumstances, they still have choices to make.Lucius is a sad and broken figure here, but he was treated leniently, considering that he tortured and murdered people as a DE. But the treatment he later received from Voldy -- for screwing up, not for betrayal -- did soften the hearts of the MLE & Wizengamot. Hopefully, Lucius will pull himself together and do more than just sit in his back garden and read . . . Though heck! I'd love to do that! LOL! Can't knock wanting to sit in a garden and read, can we?Thanks much for the review! I love hearing from folks and getting their perspectives on things. I hope you continute to enjoy the story!
Yippee! Another chapter in which Gareth McGonagall makes an appearance. I do love that wizard, though he's no Albus Dumbledore. haha. I thought it was so funny that he was chatting up the assistant in Murdoch's apothecary shop. Always the flirt ... just like his father.Hmm, can't say I feel overly sympathetic towards Malfoy's lot in life now. After years of looking down his pureblood nose at everyone not in his circle of friends, it's high time he learned a thing or two about how the other side lives. And, as he said, it could have been worse. I bet Snape did feel a bit odd, both in speaking with Lucius and in finding out just how they were living. I'm sure he'll find there are lots of changes still in store for him. Thanks again for posting!Cheers, the GLM
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! Glad you like seeing Gareth again. He'll be around a lot. He's fun, and with attitude! haha! Bet you never thought when you read that first chapter with him and Severus in it that they would become friends! (I had no doubts, however -- LOL!)Lucius Malfoy . . . yes, now that his "style" is stripped from him, his name is Mudd, so to speak, and he has no money or influence, is there much left of him? Quite a contrast with Severus. Thanks for the review. I really appreciate it!TTFN!
So happy to see a new chapter. looking forwarrd to another soon. As always its a great one, I am so glad Poppy is back.

Gareth really is a loyal buddy to Severus, an through the surface of his jovial manner there was some real concern. There certainly are a lot of people dedicated to helping Snape keep going. I loved the blend of Muggle and magical elements in both the phone system and Floo system respectively. Instaports also sound very useful and very strictly regulated. It must be strange for Severus to see himself in history books about the war, particularly with his own conflicted feelings about some of his actions. Polyphemus's name makes sense with that squint, although this Polyphemus seems hopefully nicer than his namesake in the Odyssey.I wonder why Gwen Burns has such distaste for Slytherins? It's also about time the Ministry had a reorg! It must be a change to have someone forward-thinking like Shacklebolt in charge instead of Fudge. Then again, it seems that Fudge is still trying to get involved in catching the vigilante, although still by throwing around money. At least part of it could be shame about his refusal to get involved in the war with Voldemort before it was too late.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi! Thanks!Yes, some of Fudge's motivation is discomfort with his head-in-the-sand approach to Voldie's return, and some of it is fear for what this could do to a society recovering from war and distrust, and, of course, some of it has to do with wanting just a bit of the spotlight and to be seen as a leader. Mostly, though, it's his guilt and shame over not having done enough (or anything, really!) when it should have been clear that Voldemort was returning.Gwen Burns was married to Polyphemus, who was in Slytherin and had only Slytherin friends, most of whom were either Death Eaters or Death Eater sympathizers. She's had it to here with them, and she has a pretty good idea of what Severus must have been up to before he turned on Voldy, and that makes her sick. So while I wouldn't share her feelings if I were a character in the story, I can understand them.Polyphemus was pretty much a lout. Severus and Gareth discussed him in a previous chapter:[Gareth] "I guess her husband was an ass. She doesn’t have anything nice to say about him.”“Who’d she marry?”“Polyphemus Melliflua.”“Why on earth would any woman marry him?” Severus asked, an expression of disgust on his face.“I think that Gwen felt that time was passing, and he asked her, so she married him.” Gareth shrugged.“She is not as intelligent as I had believed, then,” Severus said with a snort, remembering the Slytherin who had been two years behind him at Hogwarts. “Polyphemus had a squint, a fat stomach, spindly arms and legs, a bulbous nose, went bald on top at nineteen but kept a long, stringy ponytail, and he wiped his nose on his sleeve. Constantly. And those are the kindest things I can think to say about him.”“Was he a Death Eater?” Gareth asked.“No, but like all the Mellifluas, he supported pureblood supremacy—as if he were a shining example of it.” Severus shook his head and took a swig of whiskey.Gareth frowned. “I hope that Gwen doesn’t share those beliefs.”“Not likely—even if she was fool enough to marry a Melliflua, at least she got rid of him.”Instaports are a new transportation system springing up across Europe in the RaMverse (the German is Sofortport, which I like 'cause it rhymes! ), but so far there is only a single arrival point in Britain, and no departure booths, since the British Ministry is leery of them and, at the moment, doesn't have the means to regulate them. They are a kind of replacement for or supplement to the Floo Network, and there are handy Instaport booths in Owl Post Office across most of Europe now (in the RaMverse). (Just a bit of trivia that will likely never be explicitly discussed in the stories.)Thanks for the review!

*snip*“Nothing . . . just, thank you. Thank you for coming down for me.” He quirked a little smile. “Maybe we could have that warm snuggle tonight that we didn’t have time for this morning?”Minerva smiled. “You can count on it.”Yummy snuggles! Snuggle Bunnies with Albus! By the way, SO thankful you only used a glamor *shudders*!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I don't think he'd want to make those changes permanent! Fun for dress-up, though!
OOOOH! I love Halloween! I usually go as a Viking warrior! I would LOVE to go to a Halloween DANCE!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Halloween is definitely one of my favorite holidays -- I love dressing up! You can go to the Hogwarts Halloween party here -- you can even dress up for it, if you like!
*snip*“He is forming a Muggle-book club. You will get a notice for it, I am sure. Staff and upper level students both will be invited to participate. And you’ll be hearing about this from him, but do not let him know that I told you first, he wants to create a bowling alley in the upper dungeon—”“He wants to what?”*coughs and sputters* Oh dear God!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! You liked that, huh? hee!
Awwww, Severus giving Albus a pep talk - there's a role reversal if I ever saw one!And dear sweet Albus, feeling useless.... I can see that, very easily, after being the one EVERYONE depended on for EVERYTHING... ahh but he won't feel like that forever, I hope! He deserves some relaxation and peace, after all - Minerva will help him feel important! I hope, of course she will, she's Minerva... as will the others... poor sweet Albus. I want to hug him... well actually, I want to do more than that... but, I like Minerva too much to be bad!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, in some AU where there is no Minerva McGonagall (though that would be sad!!!), maybe you could do more than that! Yes, that was indeed a role reversal! Severus did his best, though. And I think you're right that he deserves some time to relax, if he can remember how, and have some peace. Thanks!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“I don’t want her to feel badly, though. She is doing what she is meant to be doing now, and she takes it very seriously, as well she should. I just wish she wanted to spend the weekend with me as much as I want to spend it with her.”AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*snip*“I’ll leave it all up to Albus,” Minerva replied. She looked up at her beloved, who was twinkling down at her. “I place myself entirely in your hands.”“I look forward to that immensely,” Albus said with a bright smile. “So do I,” Minerva said with a matching smile. “So do I!”Dawwwwwwwwwwww Now I'm complete mush....
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed the little glimpse of ADMM!
Oh, Sev is so sweet, trying to talk a little about feelings and letting th L word slip out in the moment. It must be frustrating trying to court someone with Dumbledore making his life complicated at every step.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Poor Sev can't seem to find any corner of the castle where he won't be disturbed and interrupted in his pursuit of romance!Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Oh, I feel poor Severus's frustration, but I do hope Albus is okay. I've been feeling a bit worried for him with all these hints about his tiring easily.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Minerva's been worried about him, and he doesn't do as well on little sleep as he used to, but he's pretty resilient still. Thanks for the reviews -- glad you enjoyed the chapters.
Hagrid's poor students must be cursing him more than usual. I bet you had fun thinking up bad things to happen to them. Sybil Trelawney would be proud!Severus is getting himself more embedded in the Tyree family. Looks like he's in for lots of collaboration in future. And little Eoghan is so very cute. He's like a little puppy, all wriggling around with excitement and delighted to be noticed.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, that was a fun section to write. And I've always yearned for Sybil's approval! LOL!Eoghan thinks it's really exciting to have Severus as a cousin, and as Johannes said, he misses his Grandma Lydia and sees Severus as a connection to her. He's thrilled with the attention from him. He also likes being useful and "grown up" and helping, so that was fun for him.Severus has found a new dimension to his social life. He's still not quite sure what to make of itThanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed the chapter!
YAY!! I'm soooooooooo glad Albus is ok, but I could kill him!! doing something so foolish! Minerva needs to have a word or two with him about it, and then Severus! LOLI loved this chapter, I really like them together they are so sweet and cute and HOT lol. I absolutely love their plans! oh how I'd love to have those plans! LOL. Thank you sooooo much for updating so SOON, you are an angel!Sam

I like where you're going with this, the characterization is excellent as usual. I hope you continue your updates. Thank you for bringing this new story to light.Truly
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi there, Truly! Good to see you! I'm glad you are enjoying the story. Because RL's been rough, I didn't want to start revising and posting until I had enough so I knew there wouldn't be weeks or months between chapters! haha! Let's hope RL doesn't interfere & my enthusiasm for the story remains high. Thanks for reviewing!
I find your timely updates very refreshing. This way we can keep up with the interesting story you are weaving without having to constantly go back and reread previous chapters. I also really like the way you are portraying Severus. Thanks for writing and please keep up the good work.

There is no such thing as too quick an update! and I for one am ecstatic at your decision to continue this series.I've only just had a chance to catch up - but I promise I will follow!thanks as always for sharing Lindsx

NO you're not updating too quickly. I am enjoying the story, I'm just not good about reviewing. Severus is interesting and realistic here.

I was beginning to worry it was going over like a lead balloon, as they say. lolI'm glad you're enjoying it and like Severus. Thanks for the review!
Oh no, you could update twice a-day and I for one would be very happy. You are so talented in describing a mood and the persons in your story. I am not able to express myself in an intellilgent way as english is not my mothertounge and is therefore clumsy

Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I understand the difficulties of expressing yourself easily in a language other than your native one! But your English is perfectly understandable, and better than some native speakers manage to write! ;-) I love hearing from you! It can be frustrating, though, I know, not to be able to say exactly what you would in your first language. I've had that experience, myself. Thanks for the review! I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
