New Chapter for A Long Vernal Season

Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Well, I was wrong. Apparently Severus does feel the need to filter his behavior with Gareth. And maybe the listlessness and sense of disconnectedness are due to the magical drainage, rather than lingering psychological effects of the end of the war?I like Melina's brisk and professional manner. She also seems to understand Severus well enough to know that fussing over him is the wrong approach.I'm a bit worried about him visiting Malfoy and not allowed to use magic. I hope he's safe there.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
His depression and listlessness are worsened by the magical drain, so fixing that will help him to be able to cope better. He'll be safer than you may imagine in certain ways, but still reminded of things he doesn't want to think about, and the strangeness of his own situation will be thrown into relief.Thank you!
It seems that it's only with Gareth that Severus allows himself to behave like, well, himself. Odd that he feels safer to be himself with Gareth than with anyone else.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Gareth's always been honest with him from their very first meeting. He's also made obvious and honest efforts to get past his own justifiable anger and resentment toward Severus. Severus appreciates all that. Gareth's also relatively close to Severus in age. All that helps make their unikely friendship possible. Thanks for the review! :-)
I wonder if Severus is suffering from depression, or if he's simply disconnecting from everything to avoid having to deal with his anger with Albus. The only real emotions he seems to allow himself to feel are for Hermione. And so many new characters! I'm looking forward to the development of each one - that's one of your many talents.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He's pretty depressed. He is finding it hard to feel very much of anything other than despair. He soldiers on, though. There's more going on that complicates things, but we'll learn more about that later!Glad you're enjoying! I hope it continues to entertain you! Thanks for reviewing!
oh god! snape at a fair! LOL
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yeah, quite incongruous, isn't it? haha! Thanks for the review!
Wohoo your back! :) And poor Severus, that witch was most unpleasant. Still, it feels so real to read how this increased his uncomfortable feelings about his own past and also his thoughts during the conversation with Flitwick. My resume: Very realistic, very good! And Poppy's cute, I hope their relationship will grow as deep as M/A's.Can you already tell whether there'll be another update soon?xxx

!I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!Severus certainly was reminded of his own past & was very uncomfortable.I'm afraid I don't have any idea when the next one will be up, although I do hope that it won't wait as long as this one did.Thank you very much!

Not a very exciting letter, after all. Severus and Poppy are very sweet together, how they both keep restraining themselves from the L-word. But really, they obviously do love each other. No need for doubts anymore, or fears about insincerity.Hm, daughter of medical people, unusual name to Muggles? How about Poppy Panacea Pomphrey?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Panacea is an excellent guess. :-)They do love each other, you're right about that. The L-word will soon appear . . .Thanks for the reviews!

He's worrying about becoming dark and violent? with Poppy? I suppose it's possible with his history, but... I hope this isn't some sort of plot foreshadowing! And the letter, dammit. I'm going to have to read the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Poppy's got a pretty good read on him -- he may still have some darkness and violence in him, but he'd never turn it toward her. He'd sooner turn it inward than strike out at her. But he has enough insight into his character to recognise that he does have that potential for violence in him, and having seen it rear its ugly head in his family when he was a boy, he doesn't have confidence that he wouldn't turn it on Poppy if he blew a gasket. The letter arriving at the end is a bit of an unfair tease for you, I'm afraid! It just seemed a good point to stop one chapter and pick up the next. :-)
Response from Riposto (Reviewer)
It makes sense, after I gave it some thought. I've been away from the story so long that I've lost track of where Severus is in his recovery. I suppose he still distrusts himself so much and has not yet forgiven himself for his past actions, so I can see that he'd not trust himself in future. Goodness knows, he's prone to self-destruction and can be his own worst enemy at times.

Well, he's come a long way with the trust. Only a moment's hesitation with the scarves, but I was surprised he let her try the spell on him while lying there blindfolded and restrained!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He certainly does trust her, that's true!

Poppy sure is giving him lots of positive reinforcement to let go of all those layers of clothes. She'll get him down to just a couple of layers on a regular basis before too long.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Poppy's pretty good at that positive reinforcement, isn't she?

*snip*Severus carefully lifted the edges of the paper and broke the Sticking Charms, then he folded the paper and set it on Poppy’s desk. He raised the top of the white box, revealing crumpled red tissue paper. He removed some of it and felt a cushioning charm release. Something breakable, then, he thought, reaching in and pulling out the object, a small ceramic apothecary jar.“It’s . . . lovely,” Severus said, turning it in his hand. It was lovely, too. The underlying glaze was white, but it had delicate designs decorating it in blue, black, and green, some purely ornamental, others seemingly functional. It was wider at the top and bottom than in the middle, where it gently bowed inward. It tingled warmly in his hand. He examined some of the symbols near its base. “It’s wizarding, not Muggle.”Very cool! I love pottery - used to handbuild and then throw pots in college - something very primal and magical about pottery - it quickly developed into an addiction to me and got to be like fishing in my intense desire... okay - I'm rambling - but this is very, very cool and I love how you worked in the historic value of the jar. I so love old jars and bottles!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you liked that little detail. It seemed the sort of thing that Poppy would immediately notice, think of Severus, and want to get him, and then something that he would really admire, as well. The history of pottery, ceramics, and the like, is really interesting, and the way it was done & used in different parts of the world at different times, too. Not that I know much about it, but enought to marvel at it and think it's really cool.
Now that's the kind of Christmas party I'd love to attend where I get to kiss all the men! WOoooooooooo! Sign me up!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Of course, Minerva had it best: she got Albus at the end! (How about kissing all the men & then ending up with Albus? Rather nice, I think!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*fumes with jealousy*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
*snip*Severus put some hummus and a piece of tomato on a bit of pita bread. Minerva had been careful to make sure there were a number of vegetarian dishes available. It would never have occurred to him to do that in particular, but all of the vegetarian selections were actually quite tasty.hehe Minerva seems to have MMADfan's taste!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
She just made sure there was some on hand this year because of the vegetarian members of staff, which there hadn't been any before.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
However, you're right: Minerva made excellent selections!
*snip*Twiskett popped around in front of him, perched on top of the dresser. He pointed at the tie and looked hopeful. “It’s hideous,” Severus said. “It’s . . . green.” Christmas tree green, Minerva had called it.“It’s a present,” Twiskett reminded him softly.“And it’s too long. And too wide.”“It’s a present.”Severus sighed deeply. “Very well.”LOLOLOL - Twiskett the Wilspy clone - only male and much quieter - this is hysterical! I love that wee elf!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you like Twiskett -- I think he's secretly my favorite -- btw, have you figured out whose son he is? There are more hints in the birthday chapter.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Oh NO! I have no idea, but now that you mention it - the only guess I'd have would be Wilspy! But, please let me find out as I read - as I know you won't spoil any surprises for me! Tee hee, he's adorable - which is such a contrast to the wizard he serves!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Nope, I won't spoil it for you!
*snip*Minerva should have been a rabbit, not a cat, with all of her hare-brained ideas, he thought as he pulled a long black jacket from the wardrobe and tossed it onto the bed, quickly following it with a waistcoat, also black. She’d reassured him that there wasn’t much to it. Then she had had him help her decorate the room for the party. He really shouldn’t stand for it. It was hardly dignified. But he humoured her. As usual.HAHAHAHAHA! I love that! I just LOVE that... I really love how amazingly fond Severus is of Minerva and, despite his grumpiness, he nearly always obliges her. Your writing of Severus Snape has actually changed my entire view of him... for the better, I should add.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! I'm glad you liked that bit -- and that you like how very fond Severus is of Minerva. It is a leavening influence in his life. I'm glad it has changed your view of him!
*snip*“All right, just give me a minute. I really should shower—”“Why don’t we save the shower for after our nap?” She winked. “You might be rested up enough to enjoy my company!”“I always enjoy your company in the shower, you know that! But I think that is an excellent idea.” He stopped in the doorway to the bedroom and turned. “You know, I should go on early morning expeditions more often if they get me an afternoon nap and shower with you after!” Tee hee
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You do love to have a little dose of ADMM every now and then, don't you! Glad you liked that!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Now and then? *chuckles* In that regard, I'm a glutton!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You said it, not I!
I got confused in the bit where Albus confronts Severus and Severus flies? I was sure I was misunderstanding something in there.I very much appreciate Severus' anger in this chapter - I do understand why he'd jump the gun and assume Albus didn't trust him - even though I don't think that was Albus' thought at all, but i can easily see how Severus would distort that.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Severus was reminding Albus that he's got some talents -- a bit of childish showing off there. He was also burning off a bit of excess energy as well as boosting his own self-esteem by doing it.
Uh oh, Sev's gonna have fun, even if it kills him. Good for Gareth, an unlikely friendship to say the least. I love it. Thank you the for the update.Truly
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yep, Gareth's going to wring some fun out of Severus, or into him, whatever it takes! haha! Glad you liked it! Thanks, Truly!
I think delaying the sorting is a good idea, though they should consider a class on Wizarding traditions for the muggle born students, too. I was a little disappointed that JKR continued the sorting and house-rivalry issues unchanged in the epilogue. It seemed to me that the wizarding world hadn't learned very much at all.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
There's actually going to be a special orientation for Muggle-born students, but I haven't worked out how that will work yet. I've thought of everything from a booklet with an introduction to all the things that puzzle Muggle-borns, to a separate, short-term class for them, but I decided that a separate class would segregate them & mark them out too much as "different," so we'll see what they end up with. :-)It did seem as though nothing had changed from the 1940s to the 20-whatever the epilogue was. They didn't learn much, as you say.
Response from Riposto (Reviewer)
Maybe a summer orientation to the wizarding world, before the first year begins?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Not a bad idea. :-)

There are an awful lot of chapters for me to catch up on while I've been away! I'm a lot more curious about Lucious's letter than Severus is. I suspect it's going to be news he won't welcome. "Scribonius", LOL

Another wonderful chapter! And Poppy's back -- YAY!!I enjoy Garath and Severus' friendship. It's definitely fun readin gand picturing the changes to the house at Spinner's End. I also enjoyed Morgana. Gwen and her reaction are very interesting... and suspicious. I'm not sure how suspicious to be because you're always so good at surprising me with some twist or another. The image of Twiskett with his little tea towel poncho is adorable. I love the door charm amplifying the knock. Just seems so perfect. Wonderful chapter. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity and hard work.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi, OFG!Gwen is, at least, an example of why the Prophet didn't publish the screed that the vigilante sent them -- too many people might have some sympathy stirred up by it, unfortunately, and they don't want to encourage that.I'm glad you enjoyed seeing Twiskett. He's fun for me even when all he's doing is wearing his tea towel poncho and rubbing sleep from his eyes! I'm glad that I finally had a little something to share with you all! Thanks for your review!

I was super excitd to see this update in my inbox!!! It seems like forever since we've had a visit from Severus, Gareth, and Poppy. I cannot believe the rudeness and horridleness of that dreadful Gwen. She is the epitome of everthing they fought against, all the prejudices and misconceptions. I'm glad she didn't stick around and Gareth didn't really care. And the ending with Poppy showing up ... wooo hoo. I can only hope this means happy things for Severus and Poppy in the next chapter, wink winkKeep your muse happy!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! It was good to get back to them all for me, too.Yes, Gwen certainly was damaged and bitter, and she didn't bother trying to cover it up with any courtesy! Yes, Poppy's back after only half her little witches' holiday, so she and Severus will be spending time together in the next chapters!I will try to keep my muse happy! (Dove Dark Chocolate helps!

*snip*Severus nodded. If Flitwick wanted cheerful benches, he would get cheerful benches. He smiled slightly to himself. Flitwick did tend to make people want to do things for him, and do them gladly. Even down to getting the black bat of the dungeons to order up cheerfully coloured benches in the Great Hall. Filius had a way about him. It was almost a surprise that the weather wouldn’t cooperate with him.I loved this insight into Filius - as well as last chapter when Severus was thinking about how Filius liked harmony - of course he loves harmony - he's a musician - I loved that analogy on Severus' part and how Severus - decided he actually liked harmony becuause, logically, he had to, he hated chaos - the opposite.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I do so enjoy writing Filius, especially in this story, though he only appears occasionally, so I'm really glad you like those bits.
*snip*They were standing at the window in Filius’s sitting room in Ravenclaw Tower, watching the rain come pouring down, a cold, heavy, miserable rain that November could bring with it. The skies had opened that morning, and it seemed all the water in the heavens was determined to drown the Hogwarts grounds. The water level in the loch was rising, no doubt, though they could barely discern its grey presence through the deluge.Just like Irene and Lee, eh? And September rather than November? *winks*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I think that compared to the last few days, even Filius would agree that their storm was practically a gentle rain! lol! But it's pretty close!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Time to start making plans with Noah! *winks*
*snip*Firenze smiled. “And you, Professor. You, newborn foal that you are, you will find your path confusing, but it will lead you forward if you allow it to. Do not permit yourself to step into the mire or to turn back along the path that brought you here, or you will find your way more hazardous.” Firenze reached out with his left hand and touched Severus’s forehead lightly. “I see . . . a blossoming spring for you. Walk safely your path, Professor.”How very interesting...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, and keep this little prophecy in the back of your mind as the story progresses. I'm glad you noticed & liked it!
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
*chuckles* You and your prophecies.... *grins*Oh I won't forget it...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
The same story could be told without them, but it makes it more interesting, gives it more texture -- and a bit of foreshadowing for the reader, too. I don't like prophecies that are merely a kind of deus ex machina, or a quasi-McGuffin, though -- at least not for my own writing. Though the one that Dumbledore believed in DD was a tad more like that, but it tended to explain his psychology more than anything else.
Response from Fishy (Reviewer)
Have I bothred to tel you how brilliant you are, lately? If not, consider yourself told! Your work is layered and rich.
