Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Gaaaaaaah!! Evil cliffie!!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Muwahaha! A fun evil cliffie, however! For me, anyway! Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Finally!!!! I sure hope things will get better and better between the two of them...Poor Severus, he's all mixed up and insecure. I'm happy to see Hermione knows her feelings about him and is helping Severus figure out his own. Let's hope he won't screw up. Great chappy.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He'll be sensitive to Hermione's feelings, and it's good practice for him to get out and socailize and to even think of himself as someone whom someone else might want to be with. Hermione is a good, patient person, and an ideal postwar "first date" for someone as confused and stunted as poor Severus. Gareth's tender care has helped him along, and will continue to push Severus toward more openness and being in better touch with his feelings.I'm glad you enjoyed the chappie! :-) Thanks for reviewing!
Lovely 'quiet' chapter, which seems to be a 'set up' for things to come. I found myself smiling at how Severus thought of a way to have a perfectly unsuspicious day-out with Poppy, under the disguise of 'collegiality'. Slytherin all the way! I doubt if Minerva has dismissed Severus' trip and her worries, but she knows better than to bother him with it. Nevertheless, I believe she keeps a keen eye on him and this situation and she may (want to) find anwers sooner or later.Haha, the Gamps seem omnipresent in Snape's life. Nice discussion also between Filius and him about the elder Gamp, his theories and his teaching. I can envision the discussion between Filius and epecially a somewhat more mature Minerva...formidable sparring partners! And as always, the depth of your magical theory, be it on potions, on charms, on transfiguration or on wands, amazes me. I find it a bit painful that Sev is so cool towards Gareth, who doesn't deserve that, I feel. But then of course Severus wanted to be alone, to work on his rooms and to read, and now not only Filius interfered with him, but Gareth as well. So I can understand him, but still.... Fitting to see Severus' growth being reflected in his rooms now. That in turn should help him to become even less somber! Interesting and insightful thoughts about himself, in his time as a spy and then short after the war, when to be alive so unexpectedly was hard for him and then reflecting on his growth and changed attitude towards people. I like his refelctions a lot! Not needing to be the servant of his bitterness any longer! It's also great to see him gaining confidence and believe he can be good for Poppy and that love, to be loved and to be in love is so meaning-giving And then the very engaging discussion between Filius and Snape about, let's say, the Deaths Dominion-developments and Snape acknowledging Filius' extraordinary sharp brain! Awesome also to see Filius trying to build Severus confidence in Poppy's love for him as well in how promising the relation between them is, regarding the factors that could intensify their bond. Oh, this is becoming such a long review, there is a lot to say here. Better round it off now...And: thanks as always for writing and sharing it with us! Looking forward to the next chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you very much! If I weren't yawning my head off right now, I am sure I could think of a better response! You're right: this chapter, though a quiet one, is setting up some future events and . . . well, better not get into that too much.I'm glad you enjoyed Severus & Filius's interactions in this chapter. Filius is trying to be "Papa Filius" as he had promised Minerva and be available to Severus if the younger wizard should want to talk about anything. Of course, Severus would much rather read his book than talk!At some point in December, I hope to write the next chapter of LVS. I hope that my readers will be patient and still be reading! Thanks for the review!
Steamy stuff in this chapter and I LOVE IT!!!! I never thought I'd really enjoy a Severus/ Poppy fic but you have proven me wrong and happily so. tee hee.Their name game is getting interesting and I'd already be out of ideas for both of them. I'd need one of those baby naming books to help me, lol.And I loved the last bit, with Severus thinking in the long term about himself and Poppy being together. That was so sweet and goes to show that he's in this for the long haul, not just a fling with Poppy. Yay!!!Thanks for the update!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you enjoyed the game and the steam!Severus would love to have a secure, loving relationship with Poppy, and he definitely is seeing it as very long term! Thanks for the review! :-)
yay! an update!! you've been so great this month! updating CSG and this one! I loved, loved this chapter!! it was amazing! I'm so curious about Poppy's name I want the game to end just so that I can know what it is lol. I don't know why I keep thinking greek names lol like Persephone, she was an awesome goddess lol. I really like it that they are getting along so well, it's so wonderful but I'm a bit worried that Severus might be going too fast and might scare Poppy away, I hope that never ever happens! thanks for updating so quickly, you are the best!I can't wait for more, I'm so very ansious about the attacks! and I miss Minerva lol. Sam
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad that you're enjoying the name game so much, even if you're a bit anxious to find out Poppy's name! Don't woory, there will be a winner soon! They are getting along well, aren't they? I think that Poppy worked really hard to make their afternoon date special, so she kinda set the pace a bit for their date, anyway.I don't know when the next chapter will be up at all, but it will be up some time! Thanks very much for the review. I'm glad to know you enjoyed the chapter.
The man is a walking mass of confusion. It's a good thing Hermione has confidence in herself.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He's very confused, and considering where he was in the morning before his visit with Gareth and where he suddenly finds himself now, it's hardly surprising that he finds it hard to cope with suddenly being on a date -- with anyone, let alone Hermione. But Hermione does have a pretty strong sense of self, so that steadied it all and kept it from being a complete disaster. Thanks for the review!
Facing one fear after another. He really made progress for one day.Gareth really did do him some good, even if it was rather surprising. No, not surprising. Shocking. Still a little off balance over that one.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus is off-balance, too. He was at a tipping point, and Gareth pushed him over. He's plunged into all kinds of deeper emotional waters, and he'll keep going. Let's hope he doesn't get pulled under . . .Thanks for reviewing!
But...But...You've managed to surprise/shock/stun me. You did kind of warn that Gareth might be quite liberal in his affections...Wow.This could complicate things, especially with Severus penchant for guilt and hair shirts.Goodness.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
So . . . age cannot wither, nor custom stale, my infinite variety, to paraphrase the Bard? I can still surprise/shock/stun? Yeah, you're right, it can complicate things. You can bet that Severus will gnaw everything over . . . and over . . . and he complicates them more . . . and then he adds complications . . . so he can put on another hair shirt. LOL!Thanks! :)
Gray trousers, garnet stick pins, and snakes on his braces. Can a rose and a tango be far behind?*snicker*There is so much of this story that is bittersweet. The smallest things that he's never had are so hard for him, even as he enjoys the thoughts behind them.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, as Gareth said, sometimes even being happy can hurt, especially when, as you say, there are small things he's never had before. Thanks much! (I don't know about a tango! We could probably find someone to teach him! :-))Thanks!
That was a nice party. Maybe some year, Severus will get to the point where it is not so much a chore.Cute mistletoe charm. I could use that one.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Glad you liked the little mistletoe charm: Thanks for the review!
oh how the damaged have risen. only to fall again at their own petty thoughts. i hope he comes out of his funk and truly realizes exactly what it is that hermione feels for him.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, at least he's making forays into socializing more, and it happened sort of suddenly for him, so he's still in shock! LOLSeverus will eventually find his footing, though his path will be circuitous. Thanks for reviewing! :-)
“I got this pot in Amsterdam. . ." lol sorry i couldnt help it. i found this very amusing :Dim glad that severus is taking gareth's advice about showing hermione how much he likes her. i actually wasnt expecting it to be quite so soon though.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
hahahahaha! Yeah, Amsterdam . . . pot . . . haha!Anyway, I'm glad that you enjoyed the chapter -- and Severus didn't expect it quite so soon, either! Yikes! Thanks for reviewing!
that was very sensual and i found myself almost disappointed when nothing actually happened lol.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You and Severus both -- he has mixed feelings, let's put it that way! :)Thanks for reviewing! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
WOW!! That has to be one of the most sensitive, YET erotic things I have ever read.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm very glad you enjoyed it! I'd hoped it would come across that way. Thanks very much for reviewing! :)
Reliving those memories for Severus' sake is a real demonstration of friendship.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It certainly is. He did appreciate that fact, too. :)
Oh, that was hysterically funny, and sweet, and sad, too. It's a good thing one of them is an adult, at least. Poor Hermione is getting her first acknowledged date with the guy she has been crushing on for years, but she has to spend nearly the entire time managing him and his moods, so he doesn't spook and run, ruining things irretrievably. Lucky for her, she has spent half her life managing moody adolescent boys.Severus seems so at sea. He's gone from hardly even acknowledging his interest in her, even to himself, to wondering how long before he can get into her knickers. This is really fun. You need to kick your guests out so you can attend to our needs an post all the chapters, NOW.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
"Lucky for her, she has spent half her life managing moody adolescent boys."LOL! Loved that, and so true!Fortunately, Severus is bound and determined to do his "growing up" fast and try not to stand in his own way, so to speak. He's got a lot of determination, at least! He's not faint of heart! lolIt's family visiting, and you know how it is with family! But I will try to hop online and post again in a couple days. I did have the foresight to get the next couple chapters through a final proofread and formatted them for posting, so if I have some minutes to myself to think & breathe, I'll try to post regularly -- but not being sure of my schedule, I thought I'd warn folks, so they don't wonder if I died or something! LOL!Severus has a bit of a roller coaster ride ahead of him for the next several chapter -- heck, what am I talking about? It's more than that. He does have some lovely calm interludes -- and some exciting ones, too! Thanks for the review! I'm glad the chapter amused you. I'd hoped it would elicit a few chuckles!
Severus is really in uncharted territory. Oh I do love seeing Snape out of his comfort zone. Not that he's ever had a real zone in which he was actually comfortable. Maybe in the dungeons. Silly man imagining her with other people. But he IS trying and trying very hard to do the right things. It's awful he didn't get the chance to really go through all of these things when he was a bit younger so he'd have some idea what to expect. I love this story.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I'm glad that you see where Severus is coming from here. He'll continue to make progress!I'm glad you like the story! Severus's path is a winding one, so I hope you continue to enjoy it! :) Thanks for reviewing!
It makes a lot of sense in the context of Severus' personality and history. He would need to know for certain.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, he does. He probably should have talked to someone about it before this point, but it's also a part of his personality -- and his personal history -- that he deals with things on his own, or wants to, anyway.
YESYESYES! It seems like I've been waiting forever for Severus to make his move on Hermione. I'm so happy they are moving forward. If only that damned internal monologue would STFU. I know how he feels, mine gets pretty crazy sometimes too. I LOVELOVELOVEZZZ this line:"If after three dates, he could kiss her good-night, he wondered how many dates they would have to have before he could thrust his cock into her pussy;"It made me giggle. I'd been thinking that through the whole date!!!(Please be the 4th, Please be the 4th...)BTW, Thanks for the quick update!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, he's getting his feet wet, anyway! Whether he takes a direct path to happiness or an indirect one, his time with Hermione is important to him, even if sometimes he just wants to run away -- it's all progress for him.Yeah, Severus is thinking a lot about sex these days -- after all those dry years and having no libido, its return is hitting him like a tidal wave. haha! Thanks for the review!
As cryptic as ever, our Firenze.I hope that Severus will find that blossoming in the spring.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He just might find that blossoming! :) Thanks for reviewing!
An apology accompanied by 20 year old firewhisky. That's sincere. Insincere would be 20 day old firewhisky.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
OMG, you crack me up! That's great!
Changing quill colors? What other radical notions will follow?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! And more than just one color, too! Maybe he might branch out beyond black attire???
Francis Flint - a strange man when he was alive. A strange man now that he's dead.Albus would make a wonderful Scarlet Pimpernel - just the right swash and buckle for it.I'm seeing Peter O'Toole as Lawrence of Arabia and Severus Snape. kate Hepburn as Minerva and Amelia Earhardt. Excellent choices!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you liked those images! I thought the characters meshed well. You're right about Francis Flint! lol! Thanks for the review!
Albus shouldn't change his beard too much, given that he has a special way with it that Minerva appreciates.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Yes, it needs to be at least a certain length for satisfaction. haha!
A nice light interlude with planning costumes and Draco committing to some major life changes.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, it shows a bit of progress for both Slytherins, and just maybe Severus might have a good time with his costume. :)
