Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Severus just made Albus very happy. And Severus accepted a hug!Major progress is being made.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
The centaur mead helped! lol!But yes, Severus is discovering the pleasure of helping people because you want to and you can and they're friends, not because you're repaying a debt or doing a job, or whatever.Severus is taking his baby steps here, and doing pretty well. There will be hiccups ahead, though! Thanks for the review!
"well, you aren't being buried in it, so be thankful for that."*gigglesnort*It may be totally out of character for him, but Severus needs to learn how to accept hugs. That could be his personal improvement project for the next year.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Haha! Glad you liked that line.Severus will have a lot of people working on him, getting him to accept compliments, make small talk, accept hugs, look at a glass-half-full, all kinds of stuff! lolThanks for the review!
Male bonding over comfort food - a classic scene. Even if Severus wasn't comfortable with Albus wanting to sort things through.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Albus's timing and approach could use some work. lol! But yes, that is a great male bonding time -- no talk about feelings or anything mushy like that! Glad you enjoyed it!
A very telling delirium. Your healing magic was fascinating, both in technique and effects.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I tried to create a healing magic to treat the different aspects of Severus's condition and that was more than just a series of spells, but which kind of meshed the treatment with the condition, if that makes sense. The delirium gave me a chance to show something of Severus's past, his psyche, and the kinds of wounds he still carries from his childhood, and not just those from his days as a DE/spy. It also creates a vulnerability, I think, and even though those with him aren't privy to the full extent of his hallucinations, they do get a little sense of them. Thanks for the reviews! I really appreciate them!
You did a magnificent job of inventing the healing magic for this scene.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I enjoy inventing healing magic.
Whoa! This is serious. I'm panicking for him.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It is a bit panicky! Good thing Minerva insisted that Twiskett shadow him.Thank you for reviewing!
Throwing up on your Head of House before you're even sorted is a most auspicious beginning.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Yeah, that's what Suzie thinks!I'm not sure if you've seen it, but if you want to see the event from Suzie's perspective, I have a 4 chapter fic, "The Sorting of Suzie Sefton," which goes through the first day of classes. Thanks!
He's also in need of a date, when he gets some energy.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He'll take some baby steps in socializing, working up to the date! It would be good for him! Thanks!
No wonder the man is depressed. He feels lousy, thinks he's not carrying his fair share of the load, and doubts his value to others. His life really does suck.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
His life certainly does suck -- and at a time when he thought it might not be completely horrid, or at least, that it might not be dominated by the consequences of his joining the DEs and then defecting. Poor guy! Thanks,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
!
YAY! A DATE!!! Woo hoo! Poor Severus, will he ever forgive himself for the past? Excellent story!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He's facing his past now, and recognising the evil he did and it's consequences, which has to come first. Whether he will ever fully forgive himself, or simply learn to live with it, is probably impossible to say. But his life is definitely getting better!Yep, a date! And with someone who will forgive him if he behaves less than stellarly on his first postwar, adult date! :DThanks for the review!
What a lovely chapter. My heart broke a little for both of them when Severus felt the need to offer himself in payment for his past misdeeds. I think he finally succeeded in hurting Gareth's feelings. I hope he understood Severus's motivation for doing it, and I'm guessing it also forced Severus to face that he had really enjoyed the intimacy with Gareth. I loved the way you let the events from the attack on Gertrude unfold in this story, letting the past and present meld into a more complete picture of what happened that night. More textured, somehow, than just a flashback or a verbal retelling alone would have been. And, finally, the open acknowldgement of his and Hermione's feelings for one another! It was very sweet. The developing relationship between them will be fun.As will the re-awakening of Severus's sexuality. Thanks for updating so soon. I'm sorry about the glitch in the previous chapter posting. A bummer for your other readers, but a jackpot for me, since I got the entire chapter uninterrupted and a bonus extra chapter for a welcome-home-from-work present!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, he did hurt Gareth there, and it was a difficult moment for them both.Remembering so vividly what he'd done in that house was important for his coming to terms with it, and important for Gareth, too, who needed to know more than he did, and who couldn't understand how it could have happened to his mother.Yes, it was an odd glitch -- I think it happened somehow when I went in and did a minor edit to the opening author's note -- but as you say, it did get the next chapter posted sooner, as a thanks to KingPig, and as a way to let folks know I'd corrected the glitch. :)Thanks for reviewing! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!
I felt nauseated right along with him. You made him so vulnerable, I wanted to hug him. Except that would make him feel worse. He shouldn't be so afraid that he'll lose everything, except that he always comes so close to losing everything.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He doesn't believe that anything good can be given him without it being immediately snatched away, sadly. I'm sure a hug, as much as he might need one, would just embarrass him and make him uncomfortable at this point in the story. But he would need it!Thanks for reviewing!
I loved Severus's uncertainty, it was so cute how they resolved if this was going to be a 'date' or not.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hermione's question sure threw Severus for a loop, didn't it? What could he say? LOL!Thanks!
Gareth is certainly pushing Severus's boundaries. I wonder what long term affect will come form this? Will Severus be more open to physical contact, or will he become even more reserved and closed off?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus is making halting progress. You'll get a hint of the direction he's going in in the next chapter.Glad you liked it! Thanks for the review!
Wizards in bumper cars boggles the mind. I can imagine Albus on the Tilt-A-Whirl after one too many servings of candy floss.Bringing out Severus Snape's inner child is a challenge of major proportions, but Gareth is certainly willing to take it on.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Gareth thought that bumper cars might help Severus get out some pent-up aggression in a healthy sort of way!Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Eeep, I can see a touch of myself in Gareth in the opening bit of this chapter. I love to cook but when I don't get the reactions I'm hoping for, I'm ready to chucnk the whole meal in the bin, though I know that's very wasteful and have never done so. I'm glad Snape finally caught on and gave him some encouragement about the lasagna. lolI would love to read the conversation between Gertrude and Gareth about Snape being in the house. I'm sure she was less than amused with the situation but she's much too classy to say anything to cause Gareth's friend any discomfort. Still ... I bet that was tense. It's always interesting to see how Snape and Hermione react around each other. Severus reminds me of a very young lad who's just learning how to interact with girls, and in a very real way I suppose he is. I'm sure he'll needs lots of advice from Gareth (maybe even Albus, haha) on how to woo the ladies!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi! Gertrude was a mite stiff with Gareth -- a little forewarning that Severus was going to be there would have been welcome! Severus is aware that his old way of interacting with people wasn't good, and he does want friends -- and "more-than-just-friends" -- but because of this, he's having to relearn how to socialize, rather like learning his "party manners." He has one McGonagall pushing him to learn to socialize with his colleagues and another McGonagall pushing him to loosen up and let others closer to him. He's going to loosen up, for sure! Thanks for the review!
YES! YES! YESYESYES! WOOHOOO!HurryHurryHurry with Chapter 32!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hmmm, I gather you liked that? lol! Thanks for the review!
*dies*Another beautiful chapter! And thank you so much for such a wonderfully quick update!! The tension in these scenes is palpable, and so well-written. Along with Severus, I felt nervous and edgy with Gertude's arrival, and I loved how you depicted Snape's emotional turmoil due to her presence, as well as the recollection of his rather interesting (read "utterly fascinating!!") afternoon with Gareth, and how he perceives all this in relation to his feelings for Hermione. Most people have an "experimental" phase in their mid-to-late teens, but it is simultaneously amusing, moving, and erotic to watch Severus somewhat stumble through his own, much later in his life. I cannot wait for the next chapter! And I do very much hope that former-Professor Gamp is alright. I know this must have been a very deep shock, and in retrospect, it seems that Gareth might have been a bit too brash by requesting Snape continue to stay.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It was hard for Gertrude to come home after a very tiring day in London, her nerves already frayed from the crowds, whcih she'd never liked even before her isolation from society but which bother her even more now, to discover Severus was there in her living room She could have avoided him and just gone upstairs, but, for various reasons, she decided not to.I'm glad you appreciated the building tension and Severus's emotional turmoil. Severus is kind of going through an entire adolescence in a very compressed time, quite a bit later than usual (!), so I'm glad that's what it reminds you of. I'm having company this week and next, but I will try to continue to update regularly. Thanks for reviewing!
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
How very taxing for Gertude, indeed. I hope all is not lost, and that somehow both she and Severus can eventually, realistically, begin to mend and heal together, respectively. I particularly look for Severus undergoing a late phase of adolescence and, sometimes, even childhood – and I'm enthralled and in awe of your depiction of his journey. My own stories (most) center around this very theme, and I've always thought not only his peers, but also Hermione and even, sometimes, Harry have all displayed (in canon) a maturity, especially emotional maturity, beyond what Snape was capable of – so I've always been drawn to stories that seem to recognize this as well and are able to show how he finally has the chance to grow....And I'll leave you alone now, LOL. Have fun with your guests!

You know, this is perhaps the most intense and fascinating chapter of the whole story. I suppose it really can't have been easy to write, because it would have been very easy to miss this delicate balance between non-sexuality and friendship-based eroticism, between intimate tenderness and simple, chaste feeling and sensing. You did brilliantly, though.
At the beginning, I was rather surprised and wondered where this might lead, and am still a bit surprised to learn that Gareth prefers men - either I had the literal blinders on or you didn't give us enough clues yet. Not that I mind, not at all. I suppose what he did wouldn't have possible for a hetero man, and I also think it was one of the greatest gifts one can give, as well as signs of forgiveness, too. What a special man he is. And how dear it is that Severus was able to accept it, let it happen and even enjoy it. The whole experience will be integral to his emotional growing and reconvalescence, I'm sure - and wouldn't be possible without a similar experience.
I have often picutred a similar experience for him myself, though never with another male so far, and never on the base of a solid and true friendsip and without wanting to go any further. This is really unusual and unexpected, and it is delightfully good.
Author's Response: Back in Death's Dominion, there are a couple of hints about Gareth's flexible sexuality, although especially without knowing that he will grow in importance as a character, it can be easy to miss them.
One of them is in this exchange between Minerva and Albus (at a time when the overriding issue in the story was Minerva getting 'round Albus and forcing his cooperation):
Over breakfast, they discussed mundane school matters, then Albus asked, “How is Gareth? I haven’t seen him in at least a year. I didn’t even know he had returned to the country.”
“I had Calum send him an electric letter thing. They do that all of the time. I asked him to return,” Minerva said, taking a sip of tea. “He’s fine. I think he’s unhappy to be back in the cold weather, but he was looking forward to seeing his mother.”
“No romantic interests yet?”
“None that he mentioned. He is a bit like his father, I think. It may take him a while to settle down with one person.”
“And one gender,” Albus said wryly. “I think he’s a confused boy.”
“He’s hardly a boy any longer, Albus, though he is still young,” Minerva replied, spreading lemon curd on her toast. “I don’t think he’s confused, I think he . . . he just has eclectic taste. He has a lot of life in him.”
“Hmmph. He doesn’t have to go about sharing it with anyone over the age of consent, though.”
“You are getting old, Albus. You normally have such a flexible spirit. And I really don’t think it’s as extreme as you paint it,” Minerva said. “I hope you don’t intend to lecture him about your own misspent youth again. The circumstances are entirely different, and all it does is make him less willing to talk to you about personal matters.”
The other is this shorter bit between Gareth and Minerva:
“I also wanted to tell Severus that he can shower today as long as he has help. Poppy said that someone should stay with him and that his back should have an Impervius cast on the healing area. She is willing to come by to help him tonight, but Robbie said he can do it after dinner. I think that Severus would prefer that.”
“I’ll let him know when he wakes up,” Gareth said with a nod. “Personally, I wouldn’t mind having Poppy’s help in the shower.” He grinned.
Minerva smiled. “You are incorrigible, Gareth.”
“I hope so! But a mediwitch or mediwizard or Healer always has added points of attraction,” he said brightly.
So as you see, Gareth doesn't necessarily prefer men, but he's very sensual and can find men as erotically attractive as he does women.
Gareth certainly hopes it will be good for Severus, but knowing Severus, it won't be simple! lol! He'll be rather confused for a while, but he'll muddle through!
Thanks much for the review!
I like rides that spin around, but not ones that go way up high or flip you upside down. Severus is in for a treat. I think. That was quite a visit to the Malfoys. I really respect Narcissa's efforts to make a life for herself. She must love Lucius not to have abandoned him after all is said and done.Excellent restructuring of the penal system. There might even be hope of rehabilitating some ex-Death Eaters.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I don't mind height, but I don't like being put upside down, either -- or the ones that suddenly drop you dozens of feet in a couple of seconds. No, thank you! LOL!Narcissa is loyal, and she has more pluck than she'd ever thought she did, herself. And she likes being genuinely needed by Lucius -- and he is actually very grateful to her.Glad you liked the overhaul of the penal system -- long overdue! Thanks for the review!
Oh – and I forgot to write this in my previous review... The chapter ended with "He felt Gareth nuzzle aside his hair and 0" ....??? I'm dying to know what the rest of that sentence is!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Egads! Didn't the entire chapter post? It looked okay in the preview! I'll double-check it. Did you try reloading the page? Maybe there was a bit of an internet connectivity glitch and it just didn't load fully for you?
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
I tried reloading the page, even restarting my browser entirely. I'm afraid I may be the only one with this issue, as I've read over the other reviews and no one else has mentioned this problem?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I have no clue what happened to the rest of the chapter, but it was missing a HUGE chunk of text! I have no idea how that happened. I repaired it. I don't know whether other readers had the same experience, but I'll make a note at the beginning of the next chapter in case some people missed the last half of the chapter. Maybe it happened only after I originally uploaded it? I think I may have gone in and edited the beginning A/N, so maybe for some reason it cut off when I did that.THANKS for letting me know! I hope you enjoy the rest of the chapter!
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
Ooooo I am glad I said something! Aww but now I do wish for some Gareth/Sev-ness. Just a bit? Pretty, pretty, pretty please??
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
*grin* Just because it's not a romance doesn't mean there won't be a bit more nice Gareth/Sev-ness coming along. It's one of the little side paths that Severus explores, one might say, without it becoming his main route. ;-)I am VERY glad you said something! It was weird that it cut off in midsentence like that -- but I'm glad it was the middle of the sentence and not the end, or it might not have been noticable.
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
Hmmm... well I hope Severus THOROUGHLY explores that particular side path... LOL. Though I would like him to stick to his main route, of course... just sayin', there isn't any reason to deny himself a fun little detour or two along the way!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
"there isn't any reason to deny himself a fun little detour or two along the way!"Oh, he'll have a few little detours! After all, he didn't have much time or freedom for that earlier in his life!
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
And I know this is getting quite epic for a simple review, LOL, but I have to know: is Gareth attracted to Severus, physically/sexually? Of course, if that's a major point to be revealed later in the story, or if you just want to leave it vague, I completely understand if you want to keep mum on the subject. I only ask because of the potential for even more emotional depth in the story, and the many possibilities and opportunities that such a facet of the plot would open up for Severus. If this is not something that is central to the story, can I be the first to request a side-story that would expand upon this unique relationship the two men are building?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! Yes, epic, indeed!Your questions will be answered eventually, and not too many chapters from now. I think you'll enjoy the development of their relationship -- I hope so, anyway!I'm actually going to post the next chapter tonight, a bit early, partly because of the glitch, but also because, well, as a kind of "thank you" to you for pointing out the glitch!
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
Aaaw, thank you!! *can't wait!*
I. LOVE. This. Chapter! You made it so in character with Snape, and it was both erotic and moving. Amazing, amazing!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
*blush* Thank you,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm very glad you liked it! Thanks for reviewing and letting me know! :-)
Such a strange fate for an arrogant Malfoy. Not that he doesn't deserve it, but he has truly been brought low.Gareth is being remarkably perceptive and tolerant. Recognizing the utterly frazzled Snape beneath the defensive snark. Most people wouldn't understand and would've left after the second sniping remark.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Gareth has the sensitivity and forthrightness of his mother and the openness and generosity of his father -- and a bit of his dad's temper, as well! But that's the right combination for a friend of Snape's at that point!Yes, a peculiar fate for a Malfoy, but somehow appropriate. Thanks for the review!
You write so descriptively. I could feel his panic and sense of bleakness. It's like the universe conspires against him when he's already so off-balance with his life.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you!Yes, it is a bit like that -- he's not even found his feet yet, and he's knocked off his pins. Thanks for the review!
Severus has a friend, whether he wants one or not. Actually, I think he wants friends but just doesn't know how to deal with them. It's a good thing Gareth isn't one to take no for an answer.Lucius. What's he up to?Catching up on reading - this is such a good story that I needed to start from the beginning again.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
He'd love to have friends, but he's scared of rejection and, as you say, he also doesn't know how to deal with them -- or even how to recognize true friendship, given his previous "friends."Ah, yes, Lucius . . . he does want something from Severus!I'm glad you're catching up on your reading and enjoying LVS from the beginning. It's polished up some, too. I hope you continue to enjoy it! :)Thanks for reviewing!
