New Chapter for A Long Vernal Season

Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
OMG! im sure you've already written the halloween chapter, but if you havent, it would be hilarious if snape came as Elvis!!! LOL
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Elvis, now that's an idea! I've actually written about, um, 70 chapters -- can you bear a story that long? LOL! I'm into Part 7 of the draft, and I've revised and polished partway through Part 3. There are a few twists and turns along the way! Thanks for the review!
wow, ive been gone too long. i guess thats what i get for finally finding a job. :D now i really want some centaur mead. if one glass is enough to make even severus start grinning, then it must be some good stuff.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, yes, it's very good stuff -- Slughorn tried to buy it from Albus, once-upon-a-time, but Albus kept it! :DCongrats on the job! Yay!
Enjoying the story a lot. I don't mind the leisurely pace, and I mind the frequent updates even less. :)I hope Severus hires the new ghost-- a Slytherin who died in opposition to Tommy Riddle would send a good message.

Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! Thanks! ! I'm glad you're enjoying it.The leisurely pace of the story is somewhat offset by the pace of the updates, perhaps! ;)It would be good for Slytherin House, that's for sure! Thanks again!
Ha! I got Madame Curie right, but for the wrong character. Severus was pretty nimble to pull his foot out of his mouth before Poppy got ticked off and hexed him. I suppose he's had some practice with the fast talking, though. Good thing, too, or he would have been hexed again had he let his thoughts slip about Vector's underwear. I'm willing to bet he wins the costume contest. I hope Suzie Sefton asks him to dance, too! This was a fun chapter. I'm looking forward to the rest of the party.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hmmmm . . . I'm beginning to wonder if you have a crystal ball . . . LOL!Yep, letting slip any of his musings about Vector's underwear or lack thereof would definitely have been met with a frosty reception, at least! Thanks for the review! I'm glad you found it a fun chapter!
I like this softer, or at least less gaurded, Severus. It makes him seem so much younger than his heavy burden has made him.Hmmm, I also love mothering Minerva :)thanks for sharing xLx
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Glad you like him during his recovery from hallucinations and his confusion and disorientation about where he is and who has been with him. He's highly vulnerable, certainly, as his confusion and mental cloudiness regress him, and he does feel at the mercy of forces outside himself. He'll regain his clarity of mind, fortunately, and has begun to already at the end of the chapter, just as Melina reassured Minerva.Thanks.
fantastic as always - I love discovering you've updated and I'm never disappointed in the direction you take it.Thanks again for sharing and I look forward to more!Linds x
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks!
Excellent. Two chapters to come home to after the weekend. Wonderful. I'm loving the Poppy/Melina healer play with Minerva thrown in. When Severus wakes up, he's going to have three women to be thankful to. Again excellent.Truly
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Glad you're enjoying it! Thanks!
The interplay between Minerva and Melina is pretty amusing. I assume that Melina is accustomed to being the most competent person on a team and to giving direction to them. As Minerva probably remembers changing Melina's diapers and wiping her snotty nose for her, she isn't likely to take that without showing a hint of claws, is she?Once again, I love your Poppy. Too bad this is a different universe than Heat. That would have given an interesting spin on her relationship with Severus in this story, wouldn't it?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yeah, Heat is stand-alone, but my favorite non-RaMverse fic, I think. I'm glad you like it, too! Yes, Melina is very used to being the most competent person in the room! She forgets sometimes that her aunt, while not a Healer, is a more-than-competent witch! haha! (Don't know if you remember the scene from RaM or not, but Minerva even healed her knees for her once when she was small -- although she even criticized her aunt's wand-movements, and that despite being too young for a wand herself! haha! I'd forgotten about that scene until just now . . .)Thanks for the review! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Poor Severus. Silly man ignoring everything that Melina said he should not ignore! He is his own worst enemy. I LOVE this story and can't wait to read the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Silly, obstinate wizard! I'm glad you're loving it! Thanks for reviewing!
Albus skinny dipping ... ah what lovely images you conjure for us. I would love to read the back story to that little tidbit of information! HINT HINT!!I hope someone sits down with Severus at some point and tells him of all the hard work and care that went into making him better. To see the other professors lending their magic and so worried about him would do his heart good, I believe. And bless Poppy's heart. She's really coming through for him. He's lucky to be cared for by three very skilled and loving witches!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Nothing very interesting happened -- just a family picnic with a bunch of them, and all enjoying the water. You'd probably prefer a story about a private picnic with Minerva & some skinny-dipping! LOL! (Do I know you, or what? Severus is, indeed, a lucky dude. Well, aside from not wanting to be called a dude! haha! Yep, he is cared about by his friends and colleagues. Thanks for the review!
Response from HogwartsDuo (Reviewer)
Oooh, you do know me sooooo well! A private picnic with some ADMM skinny dipping ... right up my alley because I am the GLM!
*crosses fingers* I hope this works!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
This is Melina's specialty, so he's in good hands; if anyone can help him, she can! ;-)Thanks for the review!
Response from Unknown RoSe (Reviewer)
Hmmmm. It can't be all sunshine and roses, we are only on Chapter 13.Also, when Mel's done with him, can I have him in my hands????I've been told that I have a healing touch, too. (pretty please???)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
You can sure give it a shot! haha!
I am looking forward to the next chapter. Excellent.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! It'll be up in a couple days, I think.
Oh, no.! Exactly what he didn’t want to happen. I’m waiting on pins and needles to read the next chapter!
One of the things I really love about your fics is that the women are very strong and yet maintain their ability to be compassionate even in the worst of circumstances. Poppy and Melina in this chapter are awesome.
I really enjoyed having Severus teach a class. He is still very sharp at noticing the little details – where the students chose to sit, who might be a couple, who has the ring on – and yet his past makes him very jaded in his interpretation of the motive behind each detail.
Did anyone else have the Brady Bunch “Time to Change” song playing in their head when they read the part with Twiffle?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
LOL! The Brady Bunch! I haven't seen that show since it was first on -- I'll have to check out youtube and see if there's a clip of that. Thanks,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm glad you like the women in my fics. I like to have some admirable women characters. It's fun to see Severus teaching, and he's not lost his edge despite feeling sick. Just a little bit of trivia for you if you've read Resolving a Misunderstanding: Norbert Twiffle is Mrs Twiffle's great-grandson. Mrs Twiffle was Malcolm's landlady in Aberdeen. Completely inconsequential detail, but fun. haha! The suspense won't last too long -- I'll be updating w/ the next chapter very soon! Thanks for the review!
oh dear. :(although i was expeciting melina to say something like: "Scalpal! Hose! Shears, Poppy, stat!" lol
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
haha!Thanks for reviewing! :-)
I don't like to review but no you aren't shouting into the void. I have really enjoyed this story and the ones before it and am looking forward to what comes next!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! Thank you very much! I hope you continue to enjoy it!Good to hear from you.
No matter how many times I read this chapter, I find myself sitting on the edge of my seat from the time Severus starts teaching and losing his ability to focus and stand right down to the last bit when they're preparing to Floo with him. If this were in actual book form, I would say it's a true page turner. haha. Bless the little house elves. They really came through for everyone in this situation, especially Snape. Twiskett should get a special treat for all he did. Thanks again for the quick updates!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, the house-elves are a real life-saver here! I'm glad you're still finding it suspenseful! Thanks for reviewing!
Evil cliffhanger! But at least you're updating so often I know I don't have to wait very long to find out what happens next.I love that all the students who qualified took Severus' class. And typical of him to dismiss it as a temporary effect of fame, rather than genuine respect. And I really enjoyed the little detail of the elves' reaction to the necessity of handling a wand. The taboo would be deeply ingrained, wouldn't it?Poppy's worry that she might have inadvertently contributed to Severus' condition worsening is very true-to-life. I love the depth and thought you put into all your characters.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, and I think the evilness of the cliffhanger ratchets up in the next chapter! haha! Yes, handling a wand could have really bad consequences for them under most circumstances, so it was more evidence of little Twiskett's bravery and loyalty! Thanks muchly for the review! I'm very glad you're still enjoying the story!TTFN!
Definitely not shouting into the void. Wow what a cliffhanger, good thing you update as often as you do. A wonderful story ( as all your other stories)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi! If you enjoy cliffhangers, you will love the next chapter. *evil grin*Thanks for the review!

Just sneaked out of bed again to print out another chapter as I can't put it down. And thought that I could as well leave another review while I'm at it.
Hmmm, very speaking, this fate you draw for Malfoy Senior. Though I'm glad he survived and wasn't sent to Azkaban, I find that mostly he got too lightly off the hook. I like much more what you "do" to him - and still he got off light with mere house arrest and some means to hold up a certain level of living.
The way the former Death Eaters meet here again is done very well and I find you managed perfectly to catch a balance between all content and feelings involved, from any side. The awkwardness is particularly delightful.
Author's Response: I'm very glad you enjoyed that and appreciated Malfoy's fate. (One reader thought it was too harsh, or something.) He did get off the hook fairly lightly, but maybe he has time to "think about his sins" and maybe to learn something over the years that he might not have otherwise learned. (Not that I have much hope of that, though! lol)
I'm very glad you enjoyed the chapter! Thanks very much for the review. I hope you do get some sleep!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: I think that perhaps he do has a chance of some serious thinking with Draco's behaviour. That, if anything, has the potency to shake him thoroughly. At least I hope so.
Yes, thank you, I did get some sleep. That's the reason I didn't print out more chapters ahead, knowing myself all too well...

Delightful chapter! Did I already mention sometime how much I adore your obsession with details and complemental facts and background stories of the wizarding world Rowling left out? ;o) I do so love the image of Severus with waistcoar and/or braces... *melts into a puddle*
What you spun together in view of his magical ailment is quite intriguing. Nagini's bite obviously has much worse consequences than everybody thougt so far, and of course it's him that has to do the suffering again. Poor Severus, it must be a hard blow on his ego that again, there is something. The large file of his speaks of its own, too.
Author's Response: And did I ever mention that I'm delighted that you notice and enjoy the details?
It is going to be hard on Severus, and trying to pretend it's all right, as he wants to do, is hard, too.
Glad you like Severus in braces! (That's "suspenders," if you're in the U.S. -- which are garters in the U.K., and braces are something you put on your teeth, or on an injured limb, etc. -- isn't English FUN!? LOL) Yep, I like the braces, myself!
Vielen herzlichen dank, Alcina!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: Thanks for the information, that will come useful sometimes. Sometimes I'm glad that my own language is somewhat down-to-earth and practical, like in this case. Braces/suspenders are plain and simply "trouser-carriers", if you translate word-to-word, or "trouser-straps". But I do find it indeed rather funny how words change meaning just by crossing the pond. Like pants, for example *giggle* - I'm living in the former American Occupation Zone of Germany, so American English is rather present, depending on where you are and what you do. Sometimes, funny misunderstandings ensue...
Author's Response: The verb "to waffle" means very different things in American English and in British English, and yet they can sound as though they're being used in the same way. But if an American says that someone waffles, that means they go back and forth -- they change their mind on an issue. In British English, it means to ramble on, sort of, just to run off at the mouth. I realised this difference in a conversation in which someone asked me if I thought he waffled, and I said he did sometimes. Not the right answer! I meant that he was sometimes indecisive. Fortunately, we worked it out! lol
Definitely not shouting into a void! Poor Severus. What next?! I can't wait for the next chapter. This feels like a cliffhanger a bit. Excellent story.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! Yep, it is a bit of a sneaky sort of cliffhanger! Unless something interferes, I'll update again very soon! Thanks for all your reviews -- I appreciate it!
Yes, I'm enjoying it. It's a slowpaced story but very well written and I like Severus here, so it's all good.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, if it were an event-centered fic, it would be a rather peculiar one-shot! lol. It's more about the experiences of the characters and their reactions to events and to other characters. Thanks for reviewing. :)
of course we're enjoying the fic!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Aww, thanks! I'm happy to hear from you!
im away for only a few days and i notice that you updated on me! twice, even! :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Don't blink, or you might miss it! LOL! Nice to come back to an update, though, huh? ;D
