Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
Interesting, I'm glad he realized that Hermione won't hang around forever. Let's hope he secures his relationship with her.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm sure that Severus's foray into socializing and dating will do him a lot of good. He certainly is realizing that he needs to take advantage of opportunities and not let himself fall back into old patterns of behavior -- and certainly, he's trying to appreciate the people in his life in a way that he didn't before. A lesson learned, he thought, too late, but now he has a second chance in this new life he has. Thanks for the review!
Wow, every chapter has been enjoyable. I love all of Snapes internal monologue and his fears, anxieties, hopes. Real people carry on these kinds of conversations wtih themselves when trying to process confusing human interactions so Snape feels very real to me here. He wants so badly to just live a normal life and he wants to be liked. It seems a simple thing but for Snape life is always complicated.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
For Severus, everything is much more confusing, poor fellow. I'm glad that you liked the chapter and found it seemed real to you! Thanks for reviewing!
Wow what a chapter! I'm thinking Gareth is going to be put in his place by his mother. I imagine that was quite an interesting conversation. However I think having Severus and Gertrude meeting again will be beneficial for them both and they'll admit it at least to themselves if no one else. Poor Severus, for someone who isn't used to dealing with emotions he was put through the wringer today. Luckily the day ended on a positive note with a date with Hermione. Just a final random thought, I don't like those inheritance laws that give only Alroy the Gamp Estate. It would seem much more fair to me that he, Aine, Robert and Gareth split it evenly.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It was done by will -- they didn't die intestate. Aine gets a lot of property in Ireland, and what Gareth gets is better than anything the rest of them get, plus he has the house in Hogsmeade. Besides, keep breaking up a piece of land, and nothing's left after a few generations. LOL!I'm glad you liked the chapter! Gertrude is not exactly the most communicative person in the world, so what Gareth tells Severus she said to him was it (that's in the next chapter to be posted :-)). You're right -- it's good for them both, on some level. Thanks for the review!
Neat story.

Thank you very much. I'm glad you like it.
I really enjoyed that party. It sounded great and was so descriptive!

!
severus willingly kissing people and not getting super upset about it? he really HAS changed! :Dand that was sweet of him at the end to make sure albus and minerva had privacy
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, he didn't want to look like the odd man out and get teased about it, nor did he want to be suspected as the culprit playing with the mistletoe, so that helped. Minerva also picked two "safe" witches -- ones who were already safely paired up with someone else, and ones who were older and who viewed Severus kindly. Although Pomona occasionally has foot-in-mouth syndrome, she is fond of Severus. She also just likes the mistletoe game! lol! Having to kiss Helena in front of all those people might have given Severus a panic attack, if not a heart attack! Poor boy!Severus is becoming more thoughtful and sensitive toward other people, not just about his own needs, though it comes in fits and starts.
im glad they got it all straightened out. i can see how such a worry could turn into despair at never finding out the truth. i had never thought of severus as suicidal but now that i think about it, i wonder how i never thought of it before. it just seems to fit him so perfectly....or rather, it DID fit him once upon a time.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, it did at points in his life. Let's hope it never gets to that point again!Severus was in danger of going backwards instead of forwards, despite Firenze's warning. Good thing that Minerva stepped in and Dumbledore had a light go on! Thanks!
Now who on earth would want to avoid any upcoming chapters/parts? Certainly not me :) Very happy to see this update, it's helping me through my psych midterm studying. Always an enjoyable read, whether emotive, amusing, or inspiring. I'll admit, I was hoping for a bit more sexual tension for Severus, but Minerva kept her promise, all for the best no doubt :) too much "festivity" in one evening may not a happy Severus make. Looking forward to the birthday!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Maybe some people prefer one kind of suspense to another -- the suspense of knowing the chapter titles and characters might not be the same for someone else, who prefers having no clue at all about what might be coming up! lol!Don't worry, *spoilerish bit here*: Severus will find PLENTY of sexual tension all around him in parts 3 & 4, and it will confuse the hell out of him! *smirk* It just comes at him from all corners.Good luck w/ your midterms! Have fun with psych! The birthday will be coming up pretty soon . . .
Success! An entire party without committing any major faux pas or being subjected to anything embarrassing - that would be Severus's definition of a successful party, I guess. He even managed some VERY brief small talk and a dance without too much trouble. But I had to laugh that he would end up insisting that he get the mistletoe to keep Minerva's secret. I suppose the role of spy and supporter of subterfuge will always be where he feels most natural. Hopefully, he will one day be able to get through an entire party without constantly comparing it to his time with the Death Eaters, though. His careful analysis of party behavior and satisfaction in successfully emulating it was pretty funny. But totally plausible. How else can he learn to behave in social situations, if not by imitation and experimentation? I remember doing that, myself, when I was an awkward pre-teen. RE: the previews - bring it on! I enjoy the hint of what's coming, and you're right that people can avoid it, if they prefer! I feel like I might be missing something at your LJ, though, maybe I should check it out?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
To take your last question first, lest I forget: sometimes I do put extra info on my blog and lj. The blog might be a bit easier to navigate, I think, and has better links on the side.Yes, a successful party, even by Severus's definition! lol! The primary reason he wanted to be caught under the mistletoe was that he was afraid of being suspected of doing it, and that would be really embarrassing for him! Severus Snape, playing a mistletoe game? Heaven forfend! haha!I am sure that there will come a time when he will go an entire party without comparing it to his time with the Death Eaters. When there will be a day when he manages to avoid thinking of them altogether, though, who knows . . .Yes, Severus is kind of going through an awkward pre-teen time, at a very late stage. But he is starting life over, and relearning all kinds of things. Thanks for the review! And for your input on the sneak peeks!
i know dumbledore was just trying to protect severus sotospeak, but he could have worded it different. especially considering everything they've been through.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, he sure could have! But by the time he realized that and tried to correct himself, Severus was out the door! But it will all be all right! Thanks for the review! I appreciate it!
thanks as ever for updating - I loved Severus 'wobble' on the road to recovery and I thik that Albus and Minerva' sreactions were perfect!hope you get a chance to write more soon, Linds
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I have the next 40 or so chapters written. Perfect, huh?
I loved the sharing of memories, I think it did help Severus feel better.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! It did.
Oh wow, I'm glad the next chapter is already done. I'd hate to have to wait for it! This is such and excellent story. I love reading all of the emotions that Severus experiences. They feel quite real to me. The emotions are complex and this is how it would be for a real person.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, no suffering through the evil cliffie! lol!Thank you, I'm glad that you find all of Severus's emotions and his turmoil to be so real. Thanks for reviewing! I hope you enjoy the next chapter!
its so weird to see snape being nice! lol i have way too many stories on my reading plate and the writers often portray him as a snarky bastard even after the war :)i liked his speech. it was short and got his point across. what did firenze mean when he all but told severus' future? basically that if he kept on the way he had been recently, life would be relatively nice? i think i made sense enough of that lol.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad that Firenze's prediction made good sense to you!Severus wants to be happier, and he has friends and knows it (it's hard for even Severus to deny all the effort that went into saving his life -- and by so many people), so he's working on being the better Snape. He can still be snarky -- especially when a student does something incredibly stupid! LOL! But I'm just using select occasions when he's making an effort not to be miserable all the time, and where he's trying to fit into his life. LOL!Thanks for the review! I'm really glad you're enjoying the story!
i wondered when moody would apologize, if he ever would at all. im glad he finally manned up and did it. it no doubt helped severus to reach his unusually good mood that evening. :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, once he was over his shock, it did contribute to his good mood -- not that he reflected upon that fact. But that's probably best -- he might have become depressed again if he'd thought about it too long! LOLThanks for the review!
I just love it when I come home from work to find a new chapter waiting in my inbox. It's a nice reward for a hard day's labor.I remember that JKR once said of the canon Dumbledore that he is essentially a very lonely man, that, because of his enormous intelligence and magical gifts, he really had no equals to share his thoughts and feelings with. Your Albus has Minerva, and he is more open and giving than he seems in canon, but perhaps he still is prone to act on thoughts and conclusions that he'd be better off using a sounding board for, first.I'm glad he and Severus had their time alone, to patch up the rift and to renew their friendship. But I wish Severus had been able to talk to him the way he talks to Minerva.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Life is not simply about intellect, intelligence, strength, talent, or whatever (IMO), so although the burdens that Albus bore were his by dint of his intellectual and magical gifts, I was glad to give him an emotional support and partner for the last several decades of his life. He does still too often depend on his own conclusions and sometimes keep his own counsel when he might better seek the opinions of others, and we saw where that almost landed him in DD -- and how this became a weakness for him when he underestimated Minerva's stubbornness and willingness to ambush him. Severus probably should have talked to Albus at the very start, even if he was hurt and angry, rather than running to Minerva, but Severus has his own issues. That he talked to anyone about it was still strides beyond where he was a few years before, say at the beginning of AAoL, or even the beginning of DD.He and Albus will gradually get so they communicate with each other better -- but it will take (Warning: spoilerish bit ahead!) . . .it will take Albus opening up even more to Severus first. It will help bring them closer, not ony because Albus will be sharing something personal with Severus, but because it will provide a kind of leveling for the two, and in more than one respect. Thanks as always for your review! I'm glad it was a good reward for a hard day at work!
First of all, it was my pleasure to read the chapter and offer my opinion. Anytime you need someone to read over a chapter, I'm your GLM!I'm very glad Minerva took time to show Severus the memories and to help him understand Albus' actions. It can't be easy for her being stuck in the middle of these two wizards, but she does an admirable job of keeping them in line.Despite seeing the memories and fully understanding what happened, I'm still glad Albus took Severus to the spot and showed that both he and Harry trusted Snape enough to reveal the location of Riddle's remains. I'm sure that went a long way towards bridging the gap between Albus and Severus. And what's not to LOVE about the ending bits with Minerva. I always love it when the chapter ends on a happy note with the two of them. A nap, a cuddle, and a shower ... what's not to LOVE!!!???
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
"And what's not to LOVE about the ending bits with Minerva. I always love it when the chapter ends on a happy note with the two of them. A nap, a cuddle, and a shower ... what's not to LOVE!!!???"Haha! That's also what makes you the GLM! lol!Glad you loved that! And yes, Minerva does have a bit of a time of it occasionally, being the sort of go-between for the two, but as you say, she does an admirable job of it! And she's able to be frank with each of them, and they know it!Thanks again for the multiple read-throughs!
Nice chapter, the preparations for the duel was interesting.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks!
OOOOOOOH what a place to stop! It would be so much better for them if Severus and Albus could really listen to each other. But they have to muddle their way through as they learn to adjust to their new roles. Minerva must get tired of being the mother hen to two grown men when she already has a castle full of children to look after. I can’t wait until the next chapter is up!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, Minerva does have to step in and take care of the two rather frequently, doesn't she? They'll learn . . . sort of. Fortunately, there's a good deal of affection on both sides, and that helps them weather the communication failures. Thanks for reviewing!
Evil, EVIL cliffie! It's a good thing you update so frequently, or I'd be sending you some nastygrams over this one.Poor Albus really bungled this one. I imagined him still standing in the same spot, after Severus stormed out, staring at the door and thinking, "Well, shit." Or whatever the Albus Dumbledore version of that sentiment is.Thank goodness for Minerva and her sensible way of dealing with Severus. I'm sure that, whatever those memories are, it was terribly painful for both her and for Albus to have to revisit them, and a mark of their love for Severus that they would do so to help relieve his pain.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Muwahaha! Glad you appreciated the evil cliffie! LOL!"Doxiedung" was one of his favored expressions when he was younger. But yes, he was standing there thinking, "that could have gone a lot better." Glad you enjoyed the chapter! I hope to have the next one up in a couple days. Thanks for the review!
Hmm, that conversation could have gone a lot better between Albus and Severus. I hate that they seemed to be at odds, especially over something like that. I can understand Albus being concerned about Snape's obsession but I can also see the obsession being born from needing to put everything to rest. I just wish Snape hadn't stormed off to Minerva. sigh. I swear she must feel like a mother or at least caught in the middle of them sometimes.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yes, she must feel caught in the middle, especially since she can see both their perspectives so well and see that both have merit, given their individual positions.Hopefully, it will all be mended soon, right?! Neither of them was really talking to the other the right way, which was a pity, but Albus was somewhat blinkered by his worries and Severus was already unhappy with his current obsession, so it rankled to have Albus bring it up.Glad you liked the chapter!TTFN!
Eeeep! Pomona brought out the claws towards Severus. She could have phrased her thoughts in a less acidic way. Good thing Albus and Filius worked together to try to smooth things over quickly. The bit with Firenze tugged at my heartstrings. I think the following sentence was just utterly beautiful:“I saw the reflection of the dawn in the moonlight on water,” Firenze said, his deep voice melodious but sad, “and was left pondering the deeps and the shallows.”
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Pomona does like Severus, but she's had some bad experiences with Slytherins in general. She also sometimes suffers from foot-in-mouth syndrome when she speaks without thinking too much -- she can be a bit too forthright!I'm glad you liked that sentence. :) I hoped it ws worthy of Firenze. Thanks for the review!
Hearing Filius talking about the duel between Malcolm and Albus all those years ago makes me want to go back and read that section in RaM. Ah, the "good ole days" lol.The conversation with Moody was awkward at best but I'm glad it went as well as it did. It will take a long time to get over what happened. And I'm glad Vector mentioned that she knew it was Snape who'd helped her out at the party.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Ah, yes, those good ole days! haha! I actually reread that chapter recently myself, and it was still fun. ;)Yes, Vector mentioning that made Severus happy that he'd said something, and it made him feel good about himself. A definite step in the right direction!
Wow, I go away on holiday and come back to find all these chapters have been uploaded. eeep. Gotta get on the ball and leave my reveiws. The lunch between Snape, Gareth, and Hermione seemed to go well. I'm glad Snape is slowly branching out and enjoying life again. The story of Frances Flint and Valerianna (nasty as she was) was very sad. I would love to have "heard" what Minerva said of Valerianna to Snape that allowed him to pick up on the fact that Minerva disliked her. lolOff to read another chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi! Hope you had a great time while you were away!Yeah, Valerianna was a real piece of work, as they say. I imagine it was a combination of Minerva's tone of voice and what she didn't say that clued Severus in to the fact that Valerianna was not one of Minerva's favorite people by a long shot.Yes, Severus is trying to be more sociable -- even down to inviting friends to lunch and picking up the tabl! Oh my! And then he actually enjoyed himself, too! What's the world coming to!Enjoy catching up! Thanks for reviewing!
