Severus Snape had believed that, for him, life after the Dark Lord was an impossibility, that his death was not merely justice, but necessity. He has survived, though, and now he must learn to live his new, unexpected life, and to find something beyond the narrow existence to which he was once bound. A Snape-centric post-war fic.
A Death’s Dominion sequel, but may stand alone. Not DH-compliant. DH-disregarded. Rated M for overall content. Much of it is "T," but the ratings rise to MA later for a reason, hence the switch to an M-rating for the earlier chapters. Watch the individual chapter summaries and author’s notes for ratings, warnings, and the characters appearing in that chapter.
Part One finds Severus dealing with some very immediate and dangerous consequences of his final confrontation with the Dark Lord more than three months before.

Reviews for A Long Vernal Season
It was very funny, Severus and Gareth sitting with their cocks in hand discussing spells as it was just another day in the office. It is difficult to see how a relationship with Hermione can develop, looking forward to further developments
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yeah, it was kind of amusing, wasn't it? Glad you're looking forward to the coming chapters! Thanks for the review!
Eeeep! Too close, too close, you two! Poppy's going to get hurt :(Too bad Gareth didn't bring up the idea of a threesome when Poppy was present... two people focused intently on Severus? *drooooooool*
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hope you didn't get the keyboard too wet with the thought of the three of them together! LOL!They are getting closer, and even while trying not to -- or at least, Poppy is trying to beware her heart. Thanks very much for the review! There will likely be one more chapter posted before Christmas, depending on a few RL factors.
Response from KingPig (Reviewer)
Okay, I know what I said before about not caring much who Severus ends up with, whether it's a romantic relationship or just a lust-motivated tryst, as I'm not too keen on fluff.....But, er, ah... Apparently, I do care, and I'm really banking on Hermione swooping in sometime soon! Not that I dislike the Poopy/Sev action, but I know HG's gotta fit in somewhere, and I'm getting a tad bit anxious and fearful that there might not be any SS/HG anytime soon :(
Well! He didn't waste any time trying out the spell on Poppy, did he? Poor guy, so anxious to push the limits of the spell, then dissatisfied that he didn't take his time leading up to it. And I was delighted to find that Poppy likes Masterful Severus, too! And since she has told him so, I expect we'll see him push the limits there, too. yum.Their differing anxieties over the date was interesting. Poppy is trying so very hard to protect herself from falling under the influence of his affection, and Severus is convinced that she wants nothing more. I wonder what will happen when they realize what each other is thinking? I expect Poppy will be even more worried that Severus would like to explore a real relationship, given Minerva's warning. And will Severus be hurt that she expects to be hurt by him? Or will he acknowledge the truth in her fears? His jealousy over the platonic affection Poppy showed Gareth was cute. <sigh> Definitely no Poppy-sandwiches in future!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, yes, Poppy likes Masterful Severus -- very much. And he will return! LOL!They don't have an easy time ahead, but it will all unfold soon!I'm glad you're enjoying the dynamics between the two! Thanks for the review.
Oh that was fun. Better luck next time with the spell, practice makes perfect. LOL.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Yup! Practice makes perfect! I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for the review!
I wonder why Severus is so determined to be in love with Hermione? He hardly ever even thinks of her, since he started his fling with Poppy. Even when Gareth was telling him how upset she is, Severus isn't even a bit concerned. Instead, he launched right into bragging about his exploits with Poppy.Gareth is very perceptive. He seems to understand Severus better than he does himself. Even so, I was surprised he picked up Severus's feelings for Minerva. It's fun watching him working out the Snape-puzzle.Mmmm. More Masterful Severus with the sexy voice! But I guess I have to give up my hopes for a Poppy-sandwich. Severus didn't seem too eager to consider a threesome. But - who's at the door? da-dum-DUM...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus begins to wonder that himself soon, so you're not alone!Severus's feelings for Minerva were partially revealed by how she acts toward him and how he allows her to act. Gareth also observed Severus at a particularly low point (in DD when he was recovering from AM's curse), so having seen him then was most informative.Severus did think that Gareth's threesome adventure was strange, and he wasn't sure how he felt about it.Ah, yes, the "someone's at the door" cliffhanger. LOL! It seemed a good place to make a break for the next chapter. :) Thanks for the review!
D'oh, playtime was interrupted at a most inopportune moment. Gadzooks! Snape truly is a puzzle. After what his grandparents escaped, you'd think he'd have been more sensitive to following down the path of destruction and murder, but I suppose he made the choices he did for a reason. Guess that's what makes him a puzzle. The more Gareth and Snape are together, the deeper their friendship becomes and I think that's very good for Snape, even if it is a bit annoying at times (like asking him about being circumcised, etc). Still, I'm glad they're friends!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus didn't like thinking about his Muggle heritage much when he was young, and his father left the family when he was still pretty young -- not to mention that his mother and grandfather wanted him to identify with the wizarding world and so discouraged Severus' father from discussing his mother and grandparents with him. So it wasn't in the front of his mind back when he was in his late teens. Anyway . . . Glad you enjoyed the chapter and the Gareth - Severus relationship. Yep, playtime was interrupted at an inopportune moment. Yikes! Thanks for the review!
Just a fling, indeed! Sounds to me like they're both leaning towards it being more than just a fling, or at least wanting more and not being able to verbalize it.I am loving this PPSS UST! Well, not exactly unresolved but at least a little hesitant in the sense that they each know they want to be together but can't quite broach the subject. tee hee.And it's nice to see Severus having trouble with the spell. All too often, he's portrayed as being a masterof everything and I think having him have some difficulties with the spell shows him as being more human! Yet another great chappie ...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks, Hogwarts Duo! Glad you're still enjoying it.Yes, Severus certainly was overconfident about being able to cast the spell, wasn't he? Gareth warned him! And a spell that took Dumbledore a while to learn -- and Gareth -- would hardly be a snap, even though Albus had Latinized the spell and included directions and diagrams! LOL! Now if Severus had been a Healer, he'd probably have had a better chance of getting it right the first time, even without having had it demonstrated to him -- and without the little pictures. Thanks for the review! We have all this awful white stuff on the ground and still falling from the sky and not a plow in sight, so it was nice to see a couple review alerts in my inbox to brighten my morning. (Yep, grew up in the snowbelt, and still don't like the stuff -- well, I liked it when I was a little kid, I suppose . . .)
Response from HogwartsDuo (Reviewer)
We have the white stuff, too, but ours is more in the form of sleet/ice, and a little snow mixed in for good measure. Still, I'm enjoying it to the fullest and we got a snow day yesterday from work. SWEEEEET!!! Sadly, though, it's melting.
Why didn't the spell work for Severus?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
It's a difficult spell to cast and it was the first time he'd tried it. Remember that Gareth had told him it would be difficult to cast and Severus was over-confident. Of course, I could have Severus be Super-Wizard and be perfect at everything the first time . . . that could be amusing!
Mustn't... check... chapter previews... But it's very tempting! Still, the anticipation is more fun. Severus has certainly developed a rich fantasy life, which is funny, because his real life is more exciting (in a good way) than it probably has ever been. The fantasies themselves are a bit amusing, too, especially the mistletoe scenario. He loves his drama, doesn't he?I liked the quiet little scene with Poppy at the start of the chapter. She is so very grounded and sensible, and she sees herself very differently than Severus does. Her thoughts about Hermione were interesting, too. Poppy credits her with the heroism of saving Severus's life, but gives no thought to the many times she has cared for him, even serving as his sympathetic, saving his magic if not his life. I suppose it's inevitable that she will be hurt in spite of her precautions, given where Severus is in his emotional development, but I hope it won't be fatal to their relationship.I also enjoyed the conversation between Severus and Vector. Once upon a time, he would have taken malicious pleasure in humiliating Sarah, but he's finally putting aside some of that self-destructive behavior.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Severus has developed quite the fantasy life for himself, hasn't he? He's managing to make some of his musings quite fun and enjoyable for himself, and they don't involve imagining doing nasty things to dunderheads and Dark Lords! And he does, indeed, love his drama!I'm glad that you liked the scene with Poppy in the beginning. She does focus on Hermione's active and dramatic rescue of Severus, and doesn't think that anything she's done equals that. Serving as a sympathetic was no small thing, though, and although she was partially motivated by professional reasons -- he had been in her care and she'd been in charge of administering the potions, etc. -- part of it was simply motivated by her care for him. And as Melina pointed out, her sympathy for him -- both just in her innate magic and in her intentional reaching out to him to assist in the healing -- was excellent, and as a result, it went much faster than Melina had anticipated.Yes, rather than grasping at an ephemeral sense of superiority by humiliating Sarah, he practiced a different sort and felt better for it. It was good for him!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, and thank you, of course, for your review!
I love the way you write Severus' fantasies. Don't tell him, but its kinda cute...
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
*shhh!* Won't tell him you said it's kinda cute! After all, he is Severus Snape, and he is not cute. So says he, anyway! Thanks for the review! Glad you liked it!
When will they finally admit their love to each other????Well...at least they're having some kind of relationship, if you know what I mean, not like MMAD who needed ages^^please upload soon :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, it felt like ages, I'm sure! LOL!Yep, some kind of relationship . . . but neither can or will define it. Thanks for the review!
Wooo hooo! Finally Gareth comes back into the picture!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Gareth is, indeed, dropping by for a visit! Thanks for the review. :)
Reading this story is like eating fine chocolate.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I love chocolate -- I hope you do too! ;)Thanks!
Another interesting and well written chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thank you. :-)
Shame on Snape for interrupting the quiet evening for ADMM and no doubt they were up to a little "something" themselves. Hmmm, must not let my mind wander into the ADMM lemon orchard ...Okay, back with you know. LOVE, LOVE, LOVED the conversation Snape had with Albus and Minerva about his idea but the best part was his conversation with Poppy, wink wink! It's awesome that he's growing more comfortable with her and letting her show him some fun in life. The fact that he wanted her to bind him while they made love is amazing and goes to show just how much he trusts her above all others. Looking forward to more of the PPSS goodness!!!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the chapter. Severus actually had pretty good timing. Ten minutes earlier, and Minerva would have had to dry off and rush down the stairs. ;-) They were just contmeplating some tea and a game of hess. I'm glad you're still enjoying the PPSS stuff. There's some interaction between them in the next chappie, too. I'm not very focussed tonight, so sorry if my response is rambly.I'll likely update tomorrow -- or maybe the next day. Thanks very much for your review.
How amazing that Severus would be the first to think of structuring opportunities for the students to talk about their experiences and even to do a little group therapy! And how like Albus to suggest that Severus should head it up. I could see that one coming a mile away! I thought it was awful cute that Severus was excited at the opportunity to have a project with Poppy, and probably never suspected it had been Albus's purpose in suggesting it.The encounter with Poppy was really sweet. And sexy. But sweet, too, that he should trust her so much that he would want to be put into restraints, just to excercise his Bella-demons. And sweet, too, that he was a little sad and lonely, going down to his dungeons all by himself.I'm so glad to be back in town and caught up with all the chapters. Now gimme some MORE! please!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I'm glad you had some chapters to catch up on when you got back into town! And that you enjoyed them all so much.Yep, Albus thinks he's being quite crafty, getting the two of them working closely together on a project -- not that Severus will object!I'm glad you liked the encounter with Poppy. For him to be able to let go with her like that was a huge milestone, and a far cry from his discomfort in the autumn when he learned that he had lain helpless on a table while his colleagues all raised their wands and cast spells -- he'd been too used to that meaning torture -- so he's come a long way, but especially in his relationship with Poppy.More, huh? Like little Oliver Twist? Well, since you're so appreciative, there will be more coming soon!Welcome back!
WOW! I really do love your story!Actually it makes me happy to read a PPSS story. I often thought about them as a couple...and well, since you wrote "Heat" I started to love this ship. And now finally they've got a whole story!I do hope all of this ends happy for both of them, and that of course we might be able to see a bit more of MMAD..^^
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I'm glad you're enjoying the PPSSness! And that you love the fic! After writing "Heat," I had ideas for a short sequel to it, but they never got worked out -- though I might still do that -- so it's fun to get them together in the RaM-verse. There'll be a bit more MMAD ahead, as well! Thanks very much for the review. I hope you continue to enjoy the story!
Loved Minerva's qualifier to inappropriate behavior at the staff table. She apparently has some experience with taking precautions while playing footsies, lol.And Severus's reaction to Albus's attempt to discuss his love life. Poor Albus is trying so hard. He seems to almost always fail at trying to connect with Severus. Perhaps if he started with less meddlesome topics? The conversation with Ginny was really illuminating. She always seems like such a strong character, yet in this conversation, her approach to nearly every relationship is to define herself by the needs of the other. And offering herself to Severus in exchange for his help and attention, well, that was painfully reminiscent of his first intimate encounter with Gareth. I hope Poppy can help her.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
"And Severus's reaction to Albus's attempt to discuss his love life. Poor Albus is trying so hard. He seems to almost always fail at trying to connect with Severus. Perhaps if he started with less meddlesome topics?"That would be helpful, although in this case, Albus achieved precisely what he wanted to: he obtained the information from Severus that he was looking for, but by appearing as though he'd given up with the meddling. He can be clever. However, he's not quite clever enough, since there are a few little details he doesn't know -- like the fact that Severus & Poppy are already "involved." Albus just noticed their interactions at the party the night before and thought they'd make a nice couple, but he figured that if he tried to suggest Poppy to Severus, Severus might balk. Albus is trying to keep himself busy, after all, and what better task to set himself, he thinks, than to help Severus find a love life now that he's free! LOL!Ginny's been in a difficult place for a while, and her start at Hogwarts was not exactly auspicious. And she's become increasingly guilt-ridden and depressed over the past several months, and is masking it the only way she knows how: by behaving in ways that are expected of her. That's tough for her. Yes, it was painfully reminiscent of that encounter with Gareth, and Severus subconsciously recognized that, and was able to be gentle with her as a result. Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!
I found it curious that Hermione's obvious displeasure with him should leave Severus so unaffected. She's rarely ever sharp and accusatory with him, but he seemed to only take her words at face value. Interesting, also, that she got right to the heart of the matter - why would Severus bet on Hufflepuff? She assumed it had to do with his feelings toward Gryffindor. But I can think of another reason.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Oh, yes, I can think of another reason, as well. And it's probably spot on.And I can also think of a reason that Hermione was upset with Severus, having nothing to do with Quidditch or bets. I am sure that Severus likely feels a bit odd about the abortive dating, too, and he doesn't want to alienate Hermione any further by getting overly grumpy with her. She ended up not having much ammunition to fling at him, anyway, once he'd pointed out that she was taking an extreme view of things . . . although if she knew why Severus had taken exception to Minerva's premature gloating, I think Hermione would have been even more displeased about it!
"He spent the next hour in his office, reading third-year essays. It was painful." You know, I wondered about this in canon. How many 11 year olds can write a decent essay? Don't most students need ongoing coaching in writing and composition, even in the UK? The same for more advanced math? Since they don't have wizarding classes specifically for these skills, I guess it must fall to the teachers of wizarding skills to also teach the three R's. I suppose that's why their homework and exams were all essay and practical. Poor teachers, what a miserable job they must have.I wonder if text-speak has invaded Hogwarts essays by now? Drunk Severus was fun! Though he missed the mark a bit with is ambition to give Poppy a Real Slow Screw. Not that she minded, hm?
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
There certainly seem to be some gaps in the Hogwarts curriculum. I wondered if it was part of the Muggle Studies class -- but I don't think that was a required course, first of all, and it always seemed like "Muggle Studies" was just a course in "how Muggles manage without magic." LOL! I actually address this in a future chapter -- or I have Minerva address it, much to Severus's delight! haha!Yes, it wasn't a very slow screw, but I don't think she minded! I'm glad you found him fun! Thanks for the review!
God, He's really thick, isn't he? Oh well, I'm sure he'll figure it out eventually. LOLI meant to ask this a few chapters ago... Are we going to find out why Hermione was sick that night? I have my suspicions.....
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
We actually found out back in the chapter where he takes her for dinner. (I can imagine what your suspicions are, but, as entertaining as that would be -- for me, at least! haha! -- it would, unfortunately, be impossible! LOL!) It really was just too many Animagus exercises done just before Apparating long distance. Yep, he'll figure it out eventually, and it will hit him like a ton of bricks. Egad! Glad you're enjoying it!
My goodness. Merlin help the witch to whom Severus decides to turn his full compassion. He'll be like a magnet.Oh wait, he already is. Nevermind. ;)I do hope Poppy gets a chance soon to... reward him for how well he handled Ginny.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Well, the next chapter will be up soon, so you can see his reward! ;DThanks for the review!
So, this is definitely not SS/HG? I know you said for sure that he wouldn't be in a relationship with Gareth and I have to say I like them together too!! A LOT!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
!It's in Hogwarts Castle only -- I did think that was a rather massive clue. Nope, the fic's not SS/GMcG. They're just really good friends who've had a bit more intimate physical contact with each other than really good friends usually do! haha! But I'm very glad that you like them together. I'd never written anything even vaguely slashy before this, so I was a bit nervous about whether it would be lemony or just fall flat. And they're both rather attractive men, in different ways, so having them together is . . . nice. I also write (my het) lemons from the woman's perspective most of the time, so having most of the ones in LVS be more male-oriented was a bit strange to get used to, whether they were het or slashy. Thanks for the review! I'm glad you're enjoying the fic.
Response from sandlapper (Reviewer)
I honestly don't always look at the category unless I am looking for something specific. I read the summary and go from there. I have read quite a few pairing specific stories that weren't posted under the "proper" heading so I don't always trust the category!! I started a SS/HG on another site only to have it turn into RL/HG all of he sudden. But, anyway, I had been referred this fic as Sev-centric (which is my favorite) with a Hermione relationship building. The Gareth addition/relationship is a huge bonus as far as I am concerned. The main thing that attracted me was the developement of Severus and his relationships with Gareth, Minerva, Albus, and Hermione after the events of DD. I am afraid, though, that I have been left cold by the Poppy PWP twist. I even reread the story to try to get the continuity back, to maybe buy into the pairing, but all I see is where Hermione's name has been changed to Poppy's. And I was SOOOO excited about a novel length story. There are so many short stories that are great, but I adore an epic. I just can't believe you lost me. But, there are just some pairings I don't read. Thanks for the ride, but I'll be hopping off here - just remember - SS/McG is absolutely HAWT it's a shame you didn't develop their romance!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
I think you'll be missing some great story, but it's up to you! And missing some nice Severus & Gareth moments, as well, but . . . See ya 'round!
I don't think Severus needs to feel inferior. The ability to make your partner orgasm on command is way better than having a prehensile penis. I bet Poppy thinks so, too.You were right about badger toughness. Wandering the dungeons knickerless in hopes of finding a horny Potions Master does take some guts, even if she has reason to think he'll be willing to play. But I can see why she'd take the risk!I'm taking it as a hopeful sign that he continues to be so considerate of her comfort and feelings, both consciously and unconsciously. Not because he wants something from her, but simply for her own sake. And something else new - his expression of gratitude and appreciation, offered spontaneously and without a painful struggle to make himself do it. I know Poppy is wary and still telling herself that it's just a fling, but she's in some real danger.
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
Hi,
Response from MMADfan (Author of A Long Vernal Season)
! I am sure you are right about what Poppy thinks -- and that Severus is far more than adequate! ;D And "prehensile penis" has a ring to it -- I like it! haha!Severus is becoming far more aware of others' feelings and experiences and not so completely wrapped up in his own that he can't empathize or consider the other person's feelings as well. Yes, his comfort-level with Poppy and his emotional intimacy with her are creating a danger zone for Poppy, no matter what she may tell herself!I often think that Hufflepuffs get a bad rap, particularly in some fanfiction, as being tender little weenies or something -- maybe because of their "puffy" name, maybe because they're sensitive enough that Slytherins can make them cry -- but for whatever reason, I think that the badger-like qualities they possess tend to be ignored. And Cedric Diggory was the Hogwarts representiative in the Triwizard Tournament, after all -- the "legitimate" one -- and he was a Hufflepuff. So I'm glad you appreciate Poppy's inner badger! LOL!Thanks for the review!
