It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
If you think I was going to miss your chapter because Ashwinder is frozen up, you have another thing coming!!I just have to say, I want a crazy Severus of my own, now. He's so sweet! I like how you set up Gringotts, and you seem to have the same observations about the tower scene that I do, and I can't tell you how excited I am to see someone put that idea in a fic! Great chapter, and I can't wait to see how you pull it all together.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
:D Glad that you came over to the PP then! SH's Mage is going to be very cool, but there's bound to be some hubub while they move everything. That tower scene of JKR's is a bit odd isn't it? Makes me wonder what she's up to! Thanks! :)
Ooooh! Another brilliant chapter! I like the way Ron and Severus were both confused about 'siezing' bank accounts. I think this is the first Fic I've read where Gringotts doesn't do that. And I'm stoked at your distinction between Wormtail's Avada Kedavra and Severus'. About two days ago, I was reading an argument that went along those lines and was all excited about the ideas it bought up in my own head. Can't wait for the next update :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I have read a few fics that have the Goblin bank going belly up at the first hint of trouble, and that never flew well with me. Lol, even Hagrid (who seems to like everyone) tells Harry that goblins "aren't very nice," or something like that. That tower scene has puzzled me since I first read it. Puzzling mat be frustrating to read, but it gives a fanfic writer a lot of interpretation room! Thanks! :)
You've managed to do it again...think that is. And I was planning to let my brain hae the weekend off! Fantastic work, as usual.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! The mysteries are piling up in this fic. I'm going to have to do something about that one of these days! Thanks! :)
Just got caught up on the last 4 chapters and I really enjoyed them :) Thank you for writing and as always I look forward to more
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that you are enjoying it so far! Thanks! :)
Real life can so bothersome! Glad to see this update. I've also wondered about that AK curse that sends people over walls, but then Voldemort's failed AK destroyed a house... And wasn't it Voldemort's wand which killed Cedric? The priori incantatum showed his "ghost" after all, but it was clearly Wormtail who carried out the deed. Now I hope Hermione won't get into trouble when she shops in Diagon Alley and has the sense to go with someone.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
That's an interesting point. Peter must have used Voldy's wand to kill Cedric, but why? I tell ya, I love those books, but some things in them make my brain dizzy! :D Thanks! :)
It's an interesting concept, that there was another spell, especially since that kept coming up in the book. Good chapter.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks! :)
Just like to let you know that I'm here and reading along and can't wait for the next chapter! Great job so far!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks so much! :)
Oh, man, Pook, what are you up to now? Saying the incantation for one spell while casting another? Brilliant!
I'm curious -- how many chapters are you projecting the story to be? I'm torn between dying to know the answers to my questions and not wanting the story to end.
I'm very happy that you were able to post this so quickly here on TPP. I was *very* excited to see the update. May the Muse sit upon your shoulder and whisper in your ear -- and happy 4th to you!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Happy 4th to you too!To try to answer your question, I have no idea how long this fic will be. I'm really bad at judging that. I thought that Unlikely Bedfellows would be around 5 chapters, and it ended up being 15! My best guess is that we are about halfway through the story, so I'm thinking it will be nearly 30 chapters. But I won't really know until we get there! Thanks! :)
Gobbledegook had me smiling. Hermione's point was interesting. Looking forward to more when you get your brain back.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks! Hopefully work won't eat all of my brain this week. :)
This story has been on my mind for three days now, I was estatic when I came online and saw that you finally updated. Now, I have to wait until you post again...a week? Really? Sigh....better than it never being posted. I cant wait to see what happens...BTW,...that silent curse over the Avada Kedavra? Secretly...thats what I think really happened in the book...LOL...damn theories.Red
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I've thought that for some time now, and I thought I was so clever! Then one day I read a lovely essay that had all my theories neatly laid out! I expect that we aren't the only folks thinking along those lines. There is such a focus on silent magic in the 6th book, there must be some reason that JKR did that. I'm sorry that the updates are a bit slow at the moment, but I promise that I'll keep plugging away at it! Thanks!
I wonder if you might have hit upon a sound theory here - given all the latest buzz about JK's newest interview and a "reprieve" of sorts. Hmm. It does make you stop and think about it. Anyway, I'm enjoying this story very much and a lunatic Severus is still a sexy one.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I tell you, I try not to think about JKR's little hints much. She's too sneaky! Trying to work out what she's talking about makes me dizzy. Glad that you like my Mad Severus! Thanks! :)
ooooo....questions...must you do this to us? I've got enough questions rolling around my brain that I don't need others too...
Now, get to work and get us the next chapter... or we'll have to get violent..
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Ha! I adore you, QP! That mob of irate torch weilding fans is priceless! Thanks! :)
"Knee-high whores." Fantastic. The Goblins always sounded very unpleasant to me, but described like this they could grow on me.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! Yes, knee-high whores sounds a bit to cute for the likes of them, doesn't it? Thanks! :)
Hmm, is it possible your Dumbledore is still alive and in hiding? Verrry interesting.... Maybe Hermione can "help" with the potion so she can learn sometehing. So what are you doing this weekend? Why, how nice of you to write the next chapter this weekend, Pooks!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! I don't know if I'll get it written, but I am going to start on it at least! As for your other comments, my lips are sealed! :x Thanks, June! :)
Oh, boy! Things are really heating up now! I never thought about the differences in the the reactions to the killing curse. Great Job, Pook!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks, Christy! You know, those differences were something I'd thought about, and I thought I was so clever. Then I went to read an essay one day, and it was all about that! Just goes to show you, there's no such thing as an original idea! :D
I like your theory about the soul returning to its human. That makes sense, and I'm not sure I've come across that theory before. Very clever.
Severus seems to be mellowing a lot where Harry and Ron are concerned. It's good to see. It's also good to see him looking out for Hermione, although shaking her like that isn't exactly pleasant, and certainly isn't romantic.
Happy birthday (if belated), and I hope yur weekend was full of wonderfulness!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I had a great birthday, thank you! Lol, Severus has been pretty well behaved, all things considered. I expect that being around Harry and Ron is so much easier than hanging with the Death Eaters. So perhaps Ron and Harry don't seem too bad! :D No, Severus shaking Hermione was not at all romantic, but he was rather angry at the time, so I don't blame him. ;) Thanks for the kind review! :)
YAY!!! SNOGGING!!! Woo hoo!!! :-) An excellent chapter! I really love this story! Great job! And, Happy Birthday!!!!!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks for the birthday wishes, and thanks for the kind review! :)
Oh, Pook! This is such a wonderful story, and I think this is my favorite chapter so far! I read it twice, just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I'm glad the pretty little whore didn't get herself blowed up!!! *smirk*Brava Darling, Brava!!GG
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks, GG! You know that I would never let Hermione explode! Lol! I'm glad that you liked it, and thanks for the kind review! :)
It was a very good chapter. I knew Snape would stop her.Enjoy you B-day.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! :)
This chapter made me laugh, I really needed that. Brilliant chapter! The way you make the characters interact is just - well, brilliant!Thank you - and Happy Birthday!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that I made you giggle! Thanks for reading, and thanks for the b-day wishes! :)
Thanks for the birthday present! (mine was last Monday) As usual it was a great chapter. I am really enjoying the "Madness" of your story -- with all the characters. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Happy Birthday -- JoAnne
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Happy belated birthday, fellow Gemini! I'm glad that you enjoyed your present, and I must say that so many kind reviews make a nice present for me! Thanks! :)
I won the bet with myself, it was Severus. At least, it had helped them to become more "physical" in their interaction. The other whores may be blind as bats, but not me! That was fun to have Severus say so. Great chapter (as usual).
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol. i couldn't resist having Severus call other folks bats for a change! Of course it was Severus! Was there really any doubt? :D thanks so much for the kind review! :)
Ohhh...what an exciting chapter, and I didnt have to wait for long to read it either. I love that. I can just see the joy on Severus face as Hermione was yelled at by Ron and Harry. He must have enjoyed that completely.Looking forward to the next chapter.Red
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
*giggle* I think that instigating that fight will make him smile for a week! :D Thanks so much! :)
Happy birthday, Pooks!! And thanky much for the gift of this new chapter, with THREE kisses. So glad Severus saved Hermione, and loved the devious way he made Ron and Harry give her The Lecture. I also noticed that Kreacher has no problems understanding who the various "whores" are - "House-Whore" is a cute title, can you just see house-spouses wearing these T-shirts?? Umm.... so are you the "Plaid-Whore"?
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Ha! Plaid-whore! Now that's a t-shirt that I can get behind! ;) It was about time for some smoochies, don't you think? But don't get too excited, no real lemons for some time yet. Thanks, June! You've brightened my birthday already! :)
'Splitting his soul made the old whore less human, not less powerful.”
*bows to all-knowing Pook* You are so freaking smart!!! I wonder if that IS TRUE!!!!! *shudders at the implications* Wonderful chapter, Pook, very telling, and finally they KISS!!!!!!!
I know, it's way too early to beg for Chap 15.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Yes, far to early, as I haven't started writing it yet! :D As for the less human, more poerful thing, it just made sense to me. Maybe that's why he's all snakey! Thanks, love! :)
