It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
You ended in the most interesting moment! Oh, I'm so impatient to read the next chapter. For one moment I thought that Severus got back to his old not-so-nice self. It was such a relief when it was just the Lord's summoning. I hope you add next part really soon :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I like little cliffies. I'm evil that way! :D
YES!!!!! You're back!!!! I just did a reread of the whole story so I'd be in the right spot for new chapters. Well, done. Love his impersonation of himself as a madman. The interactions between the two when Severus was called brought a tear to my eye. Can't wait for the next! Please, PLEASE keep it up. *toddles off to reread more Pooka stories*
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
QueenP! Hiya honey! Glad to be back, and glad you found me. More soon, it's all written anyway. Even if I have a freak vending machine accident that lobs off my hands, I could make my fiance post it. :D Thanks!

*does happy dance* (although at 3am, it looks more like a spaz attack--I am a white girl after all....)
May your plain speaking concerning the final Rowling book be heard clearly throughout the world of adult readers. In a round robin of discussions including two writing teachers, a psychologist and other plain speakers, absolutely not one person uttered the simple truth...it was plain bad writing. Nothing like a good writer to point that out. Also, there is always loss of good things in war, but using the death of an owl or an elf to spice up a dreary litany is sad in the weird sense of the word. Kudos for clarifying my own thoughts. My secret hope was that Crookshanks would TKO Umbridge with a unicorn horn up her gazorch. May you sleep the sleep of the just. JF

You know, I was just watching DH part 1 for the first time (and I kinda wish I hadn't) and even the movie gets all bogged down in camping. I would have to admit that, for the first time, the movie is loads better than the book.I was also sitting around, in a bit of post-fic finishing depression, thinking my writing was all crap. Now, my fics may not be brilliant, but you've made me feel much less crap, and I thank you.
That was one thrilling and intense beginning. On to the next, thank you!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you for reading!
Is he really back? And what will happen if Severus gets hit with another dose of Cruciatis??? I'm worried. Really worried.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Well, I tend towards ridiculous happy endings, so Iwouldn't worry too much. :)
Yay!!! Our lovelies finally got around to 'doing the deed' before old Voldiepants ruined their morning. Great Chapter!!! Can't wait to see the battle/reunion scenes coming up! :D
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! I find that I tend to follow the recipe of most romance novels, lots of sexual tention, but no lemons until near the end! :D Thanks!
At first I thought that this chapter was quite short, but then I realized that I gobbled it up in one gulp (greedy-guts that I am...) I do so love this story, and am glad that you tend towards the happy ending. I'm looking forward to the next installment, but for now I'll have to content myself to going back, re-reading the chapter and savoring it word by word. As always, thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! I'm thrilled that you gobbled it up! Thanks!
Hope she enjoys beign distracted...
Good for all the whores, you finally updated!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
It's such a relief to update again! *giggle* I suppose she does enjoy a bit of distraction at that. :D Thanks! :)
Very pleased to see an update :) I hope your muse cooperates and we get another chapter soon. As always, thank you for writing
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you for reading! You'll be pleased to hear that chapter 18 is already written and off to my lovely beta! :)
I haven't been reviewing lately because a)I suck and b) I've been reading at work by printing out the chapters, and then reading them on my lunch hour, so that's as much of an excuse as I can give you. Pretty much, I just suck. And well, just ask Lord Orion Shagswell, who will soon be receiving a nude photo of yours truly and fudge-covered bananas. But that's beside the point. Where was I? Oh, yes. The story that you're writing here. It's so fantastic! I really enjoyed this chapter. I hope you didn't have to revise it thanks to that whore Rowling. I mean, geez. Putting a kibosh on everyone's hope for Dumbledore pulling a Gandalf. Ah well, we'll muddle through somehow. But seriously, you're doing a fantastic job, and the emotions that are being displayed are so darn REAL. I feel as though I'm a part of the story, not merely an observer, and it's such a wonderful ride. Thanks so much for updating, and I hope to see another chapter soon.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Actually, I wrote that part of the chapter before JKR's news came out. It just seemed sensible to me, with the qhole Unbreakable Vow and all. That doesn't mean that I don't also hope that he'll be back somehow. I try not to pay too much attention to what JKR says in interviews, because she's damned sneaky!*giggle* I saw that review on your story. I think that Severus would enjoy one of those pics as well...I'm so glad that you are enjoying my fic, Zambi! And thanks for the comment about the emotions. I've been trying very hard to keep everyone honest. And you don't suck (except perhaps recreationally) you rock! :)
i love this story.. please update soon. thanks so much
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
More soon, I hope! Thanks! :)
Oh, my! In one chapter, they have gone from paradise to the field of battle. I'm as anxious for Severus as Hermione is! Will his ruse of insanity hold up? Will the Order prevail? Will our lovers be reunited? I can't wait to find out!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Hmm... Maybe I'll write an alternate ending full of death and destruction... Nah! Too boring! Thanks!
I am so looking forward to the next chapter! You've spoiled us, PlaidPookah, with two updates, and now, greedy readers that we are, we want more! But what a place to leave it hanging!I have to admit that I was almost as shocked as Hermione when Severus's Dark Mark burned and Voldemort was calling his Death Eaters together -- I was so caught up in their personal relationship and their intimacy, I'd momentarily forgotten all about that pesky war!I do hope that everyone makes it back alive! (Well, our good folks and heroes who've suffered so much, anyway!)Thank you very much for the update!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you, my dear! If you know my fics at all, you would know that I tend towards ridiculously happy endings. So I wouldn't fret too much.Or maybe I'll have them go camping, and then kill everybody...
Response from MMADfan (Reviewer)
"Or maybe I'll have them go camping, and then kill everybody..."OOooooooo! Squee! That sounds like a super-duper mega-awesome idea! Can I write the epilogue (in the manner of a 13-year-old fangrrrl)? I'd have everybody paired off really good, and Draco's kid would be going to Hogwarts with Harry and Ginny's kid -- it would be great! After the camping & killing everybody, of course!
Wow. Well, I'm glad she finally decided to be a Gryffindor about it. And that he wasn't so amazingly noble that he was going to turn her down.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I imagine Severus is only noble when it suits his purposes. Thanks!
ACK!!!!!! He's going back to Voldy and he only LOOKS scraggly. Hurry, Hermione -- gotta get the entire Order together fast! Oh, I am so glad you already have the next chapters written. Thank you for posting. *HUGS*
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
June, you are a sweetheart! And I love the little cheerleader smilie. Thank you for reading!
To say that I am totally trilled to not only get a new update, but being told that the story is finished and the rest of the chapters will be posted during the next weeks will be the understatement of the year I think. What a beautiful chapter, I loved that Hermione found her inner Lioness again in the morning, and her words about her love for him is also based on his courrage no matter how much she want to keep him for herself. The beauty of those words almost brougth tears to my eyes. The mad Severus that made his apperance made me smile though, he really is brilliant your Severus:-)))
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I find that my own personal quirks and feelings show through quite baldly in my fics. I like brilliant. Brilliant is sexy. Little wonder I like this pairing so much! Thanks!
This was so sweet and tender without being mushy. The transition from the last chapter to this one flowed smoothly and the whole thing just took off from there. Love it.If you don't find any takers for nitpicking, I don't mind re-reading ;) I'm just basking in the post-chapter endorphins at the moment. It went down really easy; that doesn't happen for me if there are any glaring issues.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
You're a sweetie! I write fairly cleanly, but my biggest downfall is that I rarely see punctuation mistakes, no matter how often I re-read. My beta's have to weild a large comma stick! That, and I can't spell for shite, but that's what spell check is for.Your comment on the transition from last chapter to this calms me like you wouldn't believe. Chapter 30 was written a year ago, and not posted. I'm glad the wait didn't harm the flow. Thanks!
You're baaaaaaaack! I've been waiting oodles of time to read this, and now that's it's here I shall hungrily await the conclusion to this tale.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that you won't have to wait for long! Thanks!
Just what I needed today! I'm so glad I found this story when you re-started it. Looking forward to the concluding chapters.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you! :)
YAY! I'm happy to see another chapter, to hear that the story is complete, and that they finally consummated their love!I especially love the beginning quote; it made me giggle out loud.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I love The Tick, and that quote has been begging for a place in this fic since I first read it.Thanks!
Well, I just finished reading all 17 chapters in one sitting. Phew! I'm really enjoying the story and looking forward to future updates. Very creative uses of original magic and breakdown of what happened on the tower, and you do make a very interesting point about Albus' having been thrown off like a projectile. I also like the fact that this story is completely unlike pretty much anything I've read before, and it's very easy to sympathize with Severus in this weakened state. I can definitely understand why Hermione would look back on her memories of him differently and be so moved by the sight of him on the tower. As a romance, it works well.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
What a lovely review! I'm so glad that you are enjoying the fic so far, and think that it makes sense. This is probably the most complex story I've tried to write so far, and I do worry about it. Thanks! :)
I have to confess that when I suddenly and unexpectedly came across the phrase "the Dark Whore," I started laughing out loud and then proceeded to carry on like that for at least a full minute. That is how immature my sense of humor is. ;)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
HA! Then your reaction was pretty similar to my own when i wrote it. ;) I have to confess that I've had way to much fun with the whole whore thing! Thanks! :)
Wonderful story! It is quite amusing to see Severus as a madman. Interesting take on the events of book six as well, it's almost the exact same conclusion that I myself have come to. Keep updating!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm glad that you are enjoying my version of what was going on in book six. I'm having fun writing this one. Thanks! :)
*heh* but she IS his woman. . . . . the review of the pensieve memories is very revealing--can't wait to see how this unfolds. fascinating. great stuff, but a kinda short chappy..
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
You know, it's funny. I've gotten short chapter complaints on the last two chapters, and they are two of the longer ones in the fic so far. I've decided that it's a sign of readers wanting more, so I'm not going to fret about it! ;) More soon. Thanks! :)
Another great chapter. What they learned in their trip into the Penseive was very interesting. I'm still as curious as H/R/H to know what potion(s) Snape is planning to brew. Perhaps he can brew his own cure. Then again, there's still the Horcrux in the cup to deal with, perhaps with a potion. I'd be so thrilled if you could get back to your earlier update schedule. Congrats on your MFA (and yes, I voted for this story--always gratifying to vote for the winner). ~

How sweet! Thanks for voting! I am indeed hoping to have more regular updates now. My real life has calmed down a bit, and I've already gotten the first draft for the next chapter written. So keep your fingers crossed for me! Thanks! :)
