It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
So, wonderful, Pook! YAY!
That made perfect sense for Severus calling all of them 'whore'. Oh awesome!
Hmmmm... so I wonder how he'll respond to Hermione once he wakes up.
Please don't make us wait too long. :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Should be fun, shouldn't it? :D Thanks, Ginny! More as soon as I can manage it! :)
I loved Hagrid in this - so many writers make him a buffoon but this seems spot on.The only thing that doesn't ring true to me is that I can't imagine Albus calling anybody - even his putative girlfriend - "love". I would have thought "my dear" was more his style.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks for the Hagrid compliment. I love Hagrid, and I hate seeing him portrayed as an imbecile. I have to thank my beta, Vaughn, for helping me get his "voice" right earlier in this fic. She rocks! As far as Albus goes, it seems to me that "love" is as common over in your neck of the woods as "sweetie" is over here. But you would know that better than I! Thanks! :)
It would seem that several others agree with my 'hot' assesment. *g* Looks good.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks, love! I couldn't have done it without you! And, so far, no alert reader notices! My betas rock! :D
Good chapter. I was quite happy to see the update email! I'm glad Albus is back. I often wish that could be the case in canon. :(
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Until JKR herself tells me differently, I refuse to believe that Albus is gone! So there, JKR! Thanks, Sun! :)
Whee! Yay for Severus managing the impossible! Here's to a full recovery and much time catching up with Hermione. And I guess we have a hint as to why he's been calling everyone "whore" now. Hmmmm.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Yes, indeed. His fixation on "whore" finally comes out, as have so many of this fic's mysteries. I suppose I'll just have to replace them with lemons... ;) Thanks! :)
Woohoo! an update! finally! :-D I knew it! is alive!!!!Albus's soul within Severus. But will Severus be sane? or will having had albus in his head for so long corrupted his snarkiness, resulting in him offering everyone lemon drops!?!? hehe... But yay! is alive too!! :D Woohoo!am glad u updated, sill loving this fic :-DEagerly awaiting the next chapter now!Pyro
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I love Albus, so I just couldn't let him be all dead. It's taken 25 chapters, but we finally have him up and twinkling! :D Thanks so much, Pyro! :)
Albus got a slapping! *couldn't happen to a nicer guy*I only hope Severus doesn't get well too soon, so Hermione has a chance to show him what a trollop she can be
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Ha! Should be fun, shouldn't it? Thanks! :)
Cliffie!
~narrows eyes~
That's just mean.
But ooooh good chapter.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Oh, come on, Shiv! It wasn't very much of a cliffie. I've done much worse in the past! ;) Thanks so much!
AH! This is so good! Its so hard for me to wait for an update....You are awesome!!!!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! :)
So glad to see an update - and WOW, what an update. Very impressively done, and the detail of Dumbledore waggling his fingers was spot-on.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that you liked Albus' finger waggling; I've had that image in my mind for ages! Thanks! :)
Please tell me that the next chapter will be up sooner than this one was! I hope that Severus won't push Hermione away now, assuming that he's sane again. You write a great yarn and I can't wait for more.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'll do my best to make it sooner. I should have more time now that the holidays are over. Thanks so much! :)
GRR!! MORE!!!! This isn't enough! I want to see what happens next...
UPDATE AGAIN!!!! ASAP!!!! Tell RL to take a back seat while you finish this story! *giggle*
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Eeeeeeek! Never have I seen such a huge mob of torch weilders! *giggle* I promise that I'll do my best to put down the Guitar Hero II and get the next chapter written! Thanks, love! :)
I am so glad that you have updated. I had a feeling something like that was going to happen. Please update soon. I can hardly wait to see what happens. It is an extremely good story. I am happy for now. No pressure, just hurry and update. :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
The fic was rather leading up to Albus' return. I didn't want it to be too much of a suprize. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, and I'll update again as soon as I can get it written! Thanks! :)
I was thinking about Deathly Hallows the other day and wondering to myself how I could still be angry about it three years later. I keep asking myself why I haven't moved on to acceptance by now - surely there's been enough time for that.It all becomes clear when I come across the word "abandoned" in the status indicator for a great story like this one. JKR's dismal conclusion to her series has killed too many great stories for me to forgive her. It still pisses me off and I guess I'm just not going to get over it any time soon. I'm sorry to see this story has become another DH casualty. It's just not right for such an excellent, popular and highly reviewed story to die for the sake of such a weak piece of work. Oh well.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Funny, isn't it? How reading a book can piss one off so much, one can feel the effects of it years later.
Thank you for finishing this! I really hoped you would. There is just one thing, I can't remember why Hermione disliked Hestia. Would you tell me?
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Because she was unspeakably rude to Severus at an Order meeting.

Hurrah for writer whores!! :D I'm so amazed and gratified that you were able to come back and finish this wonderful story! There were so many touching moments in it. I think specifically of Harry breaking down as he talked about his part in Albus' death, and Severus, in his madness, shrinking back at unpleasant or hurtful things. I loved Severus' flirty behavior with Hermione, and how he would catch her peeking as he showered. I also appreciated very much the way you wrote Draco, from his care of Severus to his recognition by the Order as one fighting for the Light.
Your decision to heal Tom Riddle was beautiful, and really quite unique, as so many people seem to delight in finding creative ways to give him a really terrible end. As much as I loved the romance between Severus and Hermione, for me that's the real take away from this story. Having love literally conquer all is a perfect ending to the story, dear Trollop. Thank you so much for coming back to share that with us, and best wishes in your new endeavors!
aaahhhhh watz gonna happen!!!!! DUMBLEDORE IS NOT DEAD!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Albus Lives! :D Thanks! :)
Ok, the holidays are over, the shopping and returns should be done, the wine drunk, and the relatives sent home... Now is finally a REALLY GOOD TIME to write us an update :))))
(that's a really subtle nudge, I'm sure)
I'm so glad I found this fic - it is a beautiful story! I loved it. Thanks for finishing it!!
