It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
Oh, now that was cruel and unusual. Not even a kiss? I'm going to bed sad and lonely to dream of knee-high whores and trollops. (I love the dialog, the teasing between the boys and Hermione. - He likes me best -) and of course not that red-headed whore. You really have worked out a wonderfully internally consistent insanity - just a few steps off ascew.
Love you!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Why, I love you too! Nope, no smoochies. I can't be throwing too many smoochies around, or I shall spoil you all! ;) I've tried very hard to give my Severus a specific realm of madness, and your kind comment has made my day! Thanks! :)
I love the knee high whores part. I especially like it now that he is calling her trollop...Very funny chapter. Take care,
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that you are enjoying it! Thanks! :)
Ack! You're killing me.....I know the pace is necessary to get all the details in, but.....ACK! I simply love Mad!Severus - especially your take on him. Every chapter you gift us with is almost a worse tease than not updating. I'm on pins & needles for the next.Oh, and outside of whining, keep up the good work - fantastic story, I've been stalking your LJ hoping for tidbits about updates on this one. Total addict here.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Sometimes it seems very slow to me as well, but we should be getting to some action soon! Well, not that kind of action, not yet! *giggle* I've been so busy that I haven't kept up with my LJ, but I'll try to do better. Thanks so much! :)
Oh my, another wonderful, funny, excellent chapter by such a creative and imaginative Pooka! Love how the story is progressing and the little "knee-high" whores running around...and lol about Hermione being called Snape's "prostitute", too funny! Great scene with Ron and Harry teasing Hermione; it really shows how their friendship has matured.Oh Great Pooka may the muses of inspiration fuel your writing fire and hurry another chapter soon to your devoted fans!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
How sweet you are! Thank you so much for reading and thanks for taking the time to leave me such a kind review! :)
It's great to see another chapter! Now I really want to know why Severus needs all that unicorn hair. :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! :)
just thought i let you know you have two of the same chapters.
Another wonderful chapter. I'm so glad you've updated! I'm really glad Harry and Ron aren't very angry at Hermione for snogging Snape. If they were still in school (and from canon-point of view) they would've...well, acted pissed off and betrayed. I'm so enjoying this story! I've been trying to get my cousin to read it, and it's on her to-read list. This story is just so good - like the other stories of yours I've read. Like Naked Journey and Overcome with Feeling. Overcome was the first one I ever read, and I read it twice in a row, I loved it so much. Which has nothing to do with this story, of course. Sorry for rambling. This was wonderfully done, and I can hardly wait for more! Please update again soon, if possible!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol, I think that Harry and Ron are resigned to the inevitable. I like them acting a bit older. Honestly, by the time I'd reached the age of 17, I'd certainly learned not to try to tell my friends who to date! I'm so pleased that you have enjoyed my stories so much. Thanks for telling me! And thanks for the kind review! :)
I am glad I found this story. Good for you for carrying on. And Southern, she is tops! I agree with you on DH. After seeing Part 2, I have come to the determination that the film was even worse than the book. In fact the film made the book seem like a good story. Oh well. Your story is wonderful. I took it on vacation and partically neglected my little ones by reading it. Not really, I just stayed up way too late for the last four nights devouring the tale. It is terrific! Your writing is wonderful. Thanks for a great tale.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! I recently watched DH part 1, and I don't think I want to see part 2 at all, really.
I'd hoped that if I put off reading the chapter that the story would eventually last longer ... sigh ... I don't think it's going to work. I'm going to miss having perfectly respectable people being called 'whore'. It's almost started to seem normal.Your love scene was just that - love. There's no 'f' buddies, or slam-bam; but rather you write of warmth and the sensual feeling of skin touching and the reverence of kissing. It was lovely.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
You are too sweet! When I write lemons, I'm never sure how it comes out, really. But what you describe is exactly what I was aiming for.I confess, I'm going to miss the whores too!
i love this story is there any chance that it will be finished
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Yes :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Yes :)
Just finished reading the story so far having come across it by chance. Intrigued by the 'mad' Severus - hadn't come across that premiss before. Have loved reading it - very glad I haven't had to endure the long time period until you have posted these recent chapters. There would have been lots of teeth gnashing. So for the sake of my dentist please don't delay too long before you post the completing chapters.BTW Pooka had me foxed. I knew I'd heard that before but couldn't place it. It came to me tonight ......'Harvey' was a Pooka!!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! That's exactly where I got it from! I'm happy that you've joined us, and that you will not have to wait too long for the end. Thanks!
Just as they come together that Snakey Madman must come and spoil it all. I hope very fiercely that they will both be able to uphold their promise, and that they will come back home once all battles are fought.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Well, I'm notorious for ridiculously happy endings, so I wouldn't fret too much! Thanks!
Fantastic! The great big bloody bat-like whore is jealous! Thanks for the wonderfully fun update!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Glad that you enjoyed jealous Severus. I've got a soft spot for him! Thanks! :)
My goodness... I have laughed my butt off at this chapter! I know it's not supposed to be funny (well, maybe a little...) but I can't help it... you've written it wonderfully! I'm wondering if Severus is as mad as he makes out... Hmmm...
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm a huge fan of dramedy, so I'm glad I made you laugh! Thanks!
I am thrilled you took up writing again. I have always loved this story. Your two new chapters describing our favorite couple's first sexual encounters are lovingly presented.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! I always get a little nervous when it's lemon writing time.
Yay for them! I love how apparating would be too much strain on him, but all of this activity and he is right as rain :) I guess, though, you'd have to get really wild and crazy to get splinched during sex, lol.
She is relatively inexperienced, and he does a fantastic job of getting what he wants from her while making her feel comfortable and non threatened, even things go further than she had likely planned. She is clearly pleased with the results so his gentle handling paid off.
These two have come a long way in a very short period of time. I hope they get their happy ending!
I'm so glad to see that you're updating this again! I had given up hope...
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm glad too. :)
When I read "grimy-fingered shopwhore", I laughed out loud and startled my husband! I like that despite the fact that he's mad, Snape is still in character, asking Hermione if she picked and prepared her ingredients herself.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
You've really made my day! I'm doing my best to keep some of that old Severus peeking through, despite his madness. I'm so glad that you think he is still recognizable! Thanks! :)
Very interesting plot idea ;) I really enjoyed reading this - 'mad' Severus was at the same time hilarious, adorable and heartbreaking. The end might have been a bit fluffy, but I like it that way. Kudos to your idea about the 'double' curse - I ' ve been wondering about the possibility of that myself, but up to now, I've never read it in a fanfic novel. Great writing, too!
Ack a cliff hanger! Im glad they finally did the deed before the battle. No mention of any sort of birth control? Hummm? Why am I worried about the pause in getting into Albus' office? It just seems odd that it didnt immediately let her in. Goodness I am a bundle of nerves, please post the next chapter quick like.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Well, that bit with the gargoyle was just to show that the guardian was checking, not just letting anyone in all willy-nilly. Nothing more serious than that, I asure you.
Love Severus's transformation back to "mad as a mooncalf" (great expression btw). Scared for the battle, but you wouldn't let anything horrible happen, would you? Thats what I thought :)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
:) You know me too well!
omg! I hope this ends that bastard once and for all!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Maybe. Maybe not. :D
I can feel the story winding down to an end, and while I'll miss reading new and exciting chapters, I'm grateful that you decided to come back and finish it. We've (the SSHG community) lost some good authors in the past year, and I'm over the moon with joy at the fact that we got one back. I can't wait to read the next chapter!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I can't tell you how glad I am to be back. Thanks!
Poor Hermione, seeing Severus healthy in the pensive. She's got it bad...Great chapter and I hope you update soon. Thanks!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Yes, she does! More soon, i hope. Thanks! :)
Mad severus still makes me giggle :D. Nothing constructive to add today lol!
