It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

Reviews for The Price of Madness
Heh-heh! First off, I really like the calm and mature way that Harry and Ron are behaving with Severus, and their NOT sticking their noses in her business. Second, I'm glad to see Severus back in a Potions lab. Those scary things he might brew could possibly be necessary to destroy a Horcrux, and I hope the threesome don't just assume he's up to no good. Hmm, but he could also get ingredients to make a cauldronful of Margaritas... Thanks for the new chapter, PlaidWhore!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Ha! That's it! Severus is brewing interesting Margaritas! :D I like a less invasive Harry and Ron myself, so I'm trying to let them be more sensible. Thanks, June! :)
Ah, Pookie, another interesting chapter! Love how the story is moving along...great transitions with the Trio talking together and Hermione's talk with Snape. Wonderful humorous dialogue! Snape sure can keep Hermione on her toes, guessing what he's up to. I definately think he knows more then he's letting on since he's going to brew a potion that requires over 80 ingredients. Hope Hermione will watch him closely when he brews since his madness can grip him at any turn...but who can really help the Trio if not Snape, after all he is a Potions Master...how many of them are sitting around waiting to help them with the horcruxes? Hermione is certainly in for a huge challenge!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Too true! I expect the whole trio will have to be on their toes when Severus is brewing. Lol, who wants a madman playing with his chemistry set in the basement? Severus definitely knows things he's not letting on, but I'm not going to tell you what! :D Thanks so much for the kind review! :)
'dichotomy' - now THERE'S a word you don't see every day!
Oooooh!!! Sshhhhhhhhhhhhhopping! Interesting stuff, I hope, and I LOVE IT that both Harry and Ron think it's acceptable for Hermione to pull out her 'womanly wiles' in order to get the information they require! That's classic, Pook !
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Dichotomy. I like saying that word. it has a strange symmetry when spoken. Kind of like windowsill. *giggle* Harry and Ron are sneaky. I think that they'd think it was a fair trade, not to mention that they just enjoy teasing Hermione. Glad that you liked it, doll! Thanks! :)
Excellent turn with Severus! He may be gone, but he' not out! Many happy returns of the day (belatedly)! Thanks for the chapter so close to your birthday. Cheers!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks for the birthday wishes, and thanks for the kind review! I couldn't ask for a nicer present! :)
This is really extraordinary! I am simultaneously appalled and intrigued by the process of falling in love with a madman. Severus's behavior is largely autistic, which is sort of interesting since the canon Snape is already pretty prone to autistic tendencies.
I look forward to updates. Will have to figure out if there's any sort of email notices on this site when updates are posted...
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm afraid that I don't do email updates; I've just never had enough prople interested to make it worth the trouble. But i do post update news on my Live Journal: http://plaidpooka.livejournal.com/ and I believe that if you bookmark this fic, the Petulant Poetess will send you an email alert when it updates. Hope that helps! Hmm... I guess I never saw Severus as autistic, to me canon Snape seems more obsessive/compulsive, but that's a really interesting thought! Thanks for the kind review! :)
Response from tubin (Reviewer)
Well, here are the characteristics I saw as autistic tendencies in his past behavior:
1. Becoming expert in and taking comfort in the rote repetitive behaviors involved in a structured activity (potions) - and an aversion to the less methodical and predictable "silly wand waving"
2. Stacked-up clothing and forbidding presence could be mechanisms to avoid being touched.
3. Out of control behavior if things don't fit his worldview. Tendency to fall apart or throw tantrums when certain topics (eg James Potter) come up.
4. Poor social skills. An apparent inability to empathise with other peoples' emotions, and poor insight into his own emotional triggers.
5. Idiosyncratic personal habits (won't eat around others, apparently doesn't bathe much, keeps odd things around his office and classroom)
The present behavior (in your story) also includes features like self-injury with distress, and the expressions of the above tendencies are also a lot stronger. One thing I like about this story is that the qualities that make him mad were pretty much all present in the past, to a lesser degree.
And yes, most autistics have strong obsessive-compulsive behavior. So it'd be pretty difficult to come to a definite diagnosis of a fictional character!
Great story, and I've put it on my favorites list (is that the same as bookmarking it?) so hopefully will receive the update notices. I'm really enjoying your other work as well - you write well in a wide range of story types!
YAAAAAAYYYYYY!!I love the sence of humor that you've given him...
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you! I'm having fun with it myself! ;)
Damn...I couldn't wait until you finished...AARGH!! Here I am at the end of chapter 12, wanting more...and you are not posting until Friday...Why do I do this to myself???
Very well written story. I'm enjoying it. The premise is unique, and I can't wait to find out the connection to the butterflies with Albus...I know it won't do any good, but UPDATE SOON!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that you are enjoying it, QP! I promise that I'll update as soon as I can, but I have to write the bugger first! :D
im just sitting here waiting for the next update and hoping its not toooo long....
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm going to try to buckle down and write the first draft today! :)
o hell! this was soooo fun to read!ps..i just love the little quotes you have at the starting of each chapter!love it.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! I'm having fun with those quotes as well, glad you enjoy them also! :)
Ron is SUCH a fuckin' idiot! I can't decide if it's genuine stupidity or jealousy. Prat. I'd imagine that Severus has been watching Hermione for more than one reason, and he probably suspects that she's turned a corner with regard to her decision about the destruction of the Horcrux. Enjoyed this chappie very much, especially the way Harry came to Snape's rescue. Thaaaaaaaaaat's my big boy! ;o) Yay Pook!!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I was proud of Harry myself. Now Ron was a huge prat, but he'll get over it, I promise you! Thanks! :)
Ooh, that stupid Won-Won!!!
As for destroying the Cup Horcrux.... she couldn't just use Muggle explosives? Is Severus trying to use Legilimency on her when he stares at her when she's sleeping? I wonder if he senses/knows that she is thinking of killing herself with the Cup... Thanks for the new chapter - please hurry with the next!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
*giggle* Won-Won was a prat, wasn't he? I don't think muggle explosives would destroy a magical object anymore than a car crash could kill the Potters. But i bet Hermione would try it if she thought it might work! Thanks, June! :)
Beautiful chapter. I thought you would never update. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Thanks! Sorry about the delay. I'll try to get back to writing as soon as I can! :)
Oh, man, Ron is such a fucking idiot. That numbskull! LOL. I liked this chapter. Sick or not, it's likely hard to fight the attraction, especially since there are times when he seems a little like himself.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
*giggle* Ron's been so mature during this whole fic, that I thought it was time for him to slip. I think that is exactly Hermione's problem. Yes, Severus is mad as a hatter, but he's still Severus and still has a lot of qualities that Hermione might admire. Thanks, Sun! You're a sweetie! :)
Hem. Hermione's filter isn't doing her justice. Does she really think Harry would take her loss well? (Knowing how well Harry takes anyone's death should clue her in to that!) And hopefully Severus' little crush and singlemindedness will help him notice and prevent her from doing anything rash.
Poor Severus. At least he's in good and caring hands.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I think that you have hit the nail on the head. But Hermione is feeling a bit insignificant, so I think she is not giving herself enough credit. As for Severus, he may be mad, but he's no fool, lol! He did manage to snuggle into Hermione's breasts, after all. Mad as a hatter, but still a Slytherin in all his glory! ;) Thanks! :)
This is a really off beat and fun story. Seeing Severus in this light is refreshing after the constant stream of rhapsodising to be found about the man on this site. But being guilty of said Snape whoreing - who am I to judge.Just wanted to say 'good work and keep it up.'
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I adore the character of Severus, but I can't resist putting him into the most odd situations I can think of. I'm so glad that you are enjoying this fic so far. Thanks! :)
i'm sure dear severus couldnt properly scrub his own back..poor dear. I love your story..cant wait for the next bit!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! I'll volunteer for back scrubbing! Thanks! :)
here, here some cheering charms to fight the glum rain. Well, it's raining here too so that chapter was very welcome and I used it as a cheering charm. Thanks.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
How sweet! I'm glad that it cheered you. The kind reviews that I have recieved have certainly cheered me! Thanks! :)
Ghaaa...awesome chapter Pook! Too bad it ended to soon...oh, my I LOVED the Snape shower scene and Hemrione being a unrepentent voyeur! Yummy wet Snape in all his glory for her personal viewing enjoyment, lol. I also liked how you expounded more on his condition and how Hermione sees glimpses of his saneness in rare moments when they interact. Its nice to see that Ron and Harry have also been able to overcome their past dislike of Snape and now treat him with civility...far too many fanfics continuously portray the two as stagnant, one dimensional characters who never change or mature, which is a shame because there is such rich potential for their character development and emerging relationships with Snape. You have a rare flare for style in writing. Thanks.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! Lol, I couldn't help but let Hermione peek. I would have peeked too at that age, my innocence did not stop my curiosity! I've been proud of my Hermione and especially my Ron and Harry. I honestly can't stand it when stories have them acting at 18 or worse, at 30, the same way that they acted at 11. Boys do grow up, at least somewhat! Now, they may still have their prat moments, but I'll never have them acting like morons, I hope! Thanks for your kind comments! :)
I'm glad they all were able to have a laugh together. Sounds like things are settling in, and Severus might feel even better once he gets new clothes of his very own. Hmm, perhaps they should get him some medicinal chocolate.... Any chocolate in Louisville? Thanks for posting, Pook!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I've been hitting the chocolate a little hard lately, what with the rain! I'm surprised there aren't chocolate refferences all over this fic! :D Severus is definitely having more stable moments now that he is safe and reasonably comfortable, but he's still mad, so don't expect too smooth a ride! ;) Thanks, June! You're the best! :)
Pleasant little chapter. I'd have been peeking, too. I am wondering about Kreacher and those clothes. Does that count as giving him clothes? Hope he's not sneaking about freely, the blighter. I liked that he stared at her for a while... makes me think of the "real" Snape a bit.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I definitely would have peeked! Hmm...good question. I always thought that Malfoy's handing off of the sock was a bit fishy. Surely house-elves can take care of a wizard's things without it being considered a gift? Otherwise, who does all those students laundry at Hogwarts! :D But that's quite a dilemma; I wonder what JKR would say about it? In any event, my Kreacher is not free, because Harry would have to be the one to give him the clothes. (I wouldn't let that little bugger free for anything! Before you knew it, he'd ruin my whole fic! :D ) I'm trying my best to let Snape be mad as he wants to be, but also let bits of himself show through. It's hard to do though! Thanks, doll! :)
Response from Southern_Witch_69 (Reviewer)
I imagine it's very hard!I agree about the house-elf bit, but I was thinking of how Hermione used to make and leave all the hats around the common room. Only Dobby would go round after to clean it because of the "clothes" there.I wonder if it has to have the intention of freeing tagged along with it. Well, no, because then we get the Malfoy and sock thing again. Bzzzzzz.....Pay no attention to me. I'm just glad he's not free!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Good point about the Hermione thing. I tell ya, sometimes JKR makes my logic train derail! I'm not complaining, mind you. I love her books or I wouldn't be here! But there are definitely some inconsistancies! Maybe it's a question of giving them something vs telling them to work on something. But the fact that Hermione could even try to "trick" the house-elves into freedom never did sit well with me.
Oh Pook, this is a wonderful tale. It's sad and hilarious all at the same time. The only think I think of when he mentions 'whores' all the time is Sid Vicious and the sex pistols, but I don't rightly know why. Maybe I'm just imagining that particular accent... I half expect him to extend his fingers up in a V and give the room a rasberry. As a matter of fact, I hope he does it to old Moldie Voldie. Love the story, can't wait for the next chapter!!! *bats eyelashes prettily* GG
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks, GG! Lol! Severus Snape and the Sex Pistols! Now that's a nice parody idea if I ever heard one! Glad that you like it so far! More soon, I hope! :)
Oh now.... we just have to know... does he ever recover and return to his sour self... or does he recover, become brilliant and sexy again AND realize Hermoine as well? Inquiring minds MUST know!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'd have to say that Severus is never going to exactly be his old sour self. I am putting him through rather a lot, after all. But he's not going to go skipping through any fields picking daisies either. ;) Thanks! :)
Heh heh. Taking a shower, are we? Naughty! Or, you know. Taking care of a person who one second acts like a three-year-old, the next second is a snarky professor. Hey, keeps Hermione on her toes, right? Great chapter. I'm glad you posted it so soon.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
*giggle* Hermione better keep on her toes, it's going to be a bumpy ride! :D Thanks, love! Kiss the piggies for me! :)
Great work! I can't wait for more.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks! :)
