It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
I have to be honest, I was rooting for 'cunt'. Hermione should read Inga Musico's book Cunt. That whispered 'Hermione' was certainly a twist. Either I am having a case of the stupids or this sentance needs a little editing Scratching me behind the ears and wondering why I don’t thump my fucking leg. Wonderful chapter. This story just keeps getting better.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
*giggle* That sentence is a bit odd. It's meant to sound like he's muttering to himself at that point. As amusing as the idea is, I simply can't see Hermione preferring cunt to whore. Besides, i wouldn't be able to stand typing it throughout the rest of the story! Despite many folks attempts to "reclaim" the word, i still find it a bit harsh. Thanks for reading and thanks for the kind review! :)
This is such a great story! I was ecstatic when I saw it was updated! Can't wait for more, I love it!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thanks so much! :)
So Hermione has a special nickname, just for her! That makes me happy. Poor Severus...Perhaps he can't say her name because it's one of those things that triggers his fear (or whatever it is that he feels that makes him have an "episode")? I wonder what Severus' relationship with Harry and Ron will be when (if?) he gets better? I'd like to think they'd stay friendly, but if Severus becomes more like his old self, I don't know if he'd be willing...Either way, this was a wonderful chapter. I admit, I read this first and when I see it updated on Ashwinder, I check to make sure it's on my favorites and leave it alone. I just can't wait for updates...Amazing job though! Wonderful! Stupendous! Update, update! Lol!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Aaaah! Those torch weilders are after me again! :D Though Hermione has been doing the lion's share of the caregiving, Ron and Harry have been taking care of Severus as well, and (if or when) he gets some of his marbles back, I don't think that is something Severus will forget. I don't think the boys would forget it either. When you've been taking care of someone, I imagine it's hard to completely get rid of that paternal feeling. But I'm jumping the gun! Mostly I just want to say that while the parties involved may have their volitile moments, there aren't going to be any major fueds in this fic. We've got other fish to fry! And now, i think I've rambled on long enough. I'd better get moving before the mob catches up! :D Thanks so much! :)
I was following this on Ashwinder. The move over there seems to be causing a bit of delay on updates! I am glad though, I have found some great stories here as well. I absolutely love the originality of this story. The only problem is that I devour the chapter instead of savoring it! Please update again soon.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
They are very, very busy on the move over at Ashwinder. So the queue is a bit slow, which is perfectly understandable. Anyone who is impatient like me can always nip over here to read it. NSS really has made this archive a nice place to post and to read. Thanks! :)
*sighs happily*
I know it's very frustrating for them -- and for us -- but another chapter in PoM (and just before bed, too) is always a happy event. I'm growing increasingly suspicious of that suit of armor -- I have my eye on it for future developments. And I find myself coming up with all sorts of scenarios for Severus' inability to address people properly. I'm thinking it has something to do with protecting the identity of something that absolutely cannot be given away. Perhaps he doesn't even remember what the modification is protecting. How best to protect your knowledge of something than to be rendered incapable of speaking sensibly? Oooooh, I know, I shouldn't speculate. In any case, I'm also suspecting that some sort of kink (of the not-so-good kind) has to be coming up in this relationship, just to add a little edge back. Since Harry and Ron seem relatively accepting, I'm wondering if someone new might be coming on the scene.
Bravo!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I won't say much because I don't want to give too much away, but the whole whore thing is a minor mystery compared to other things in the story. I only hope that folks won't be dissapointed when the reason comes out! Personally, I think that Hermione and Severus have enough to deal with at the moment. I don't plan to throw anything else at them, though it won't all be trollops and happy snogging either! ;) Thanks so much for the kind review! :)
I'm glad he didn't call the armor "Miss Granger."
I do believe I squealed when I saw this chapter in the update list. No one was around to witness it, so I can't say for sure, though.
Another lovely chapter. You showed admirable restraint in only listing three options (and a good three options they were!), and that entire scene was oddly touching. Severus really does care for her, and even shows it now and again. But the teasing is going to get worse, isn't it? And hopefully Hermione will give as good as she gets.
Thanks for the quick update!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
HA! I didn't even consider "Miss Granger!" Perhaps I should have... ;) Woo-hoo! I got a possible squeal! I'm afraid that Hermione and Severus have only begun to be frustrated. Muahahaha! <---evil pooka laughter. Thanks so much! :)
LOL. I really think Hermione should have left well enought alone. The other options Severus came up with was hilarious. Trollop is just...and odd word. He could have used Jezibel. LOL. Least it sounds like a name.Red
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Ha! Oh, I like Jezebel, though to me it brings up notions of a woman who cannot be trusted. I'm fond of trollop, myself. Lol, obviously! Since that's what I picked! I tell you, I've been stupid all day today! Thanks so much!
“Pretty little trollop,” he murmured before leaning down to give her another kiss. Releasing her, he walked towards the door. “There are some things I must see to in the lab, trollop." LOL!! I guess that's better than whore!!! LOL ;-) God I love it! You make me laugh like no one else. He said that like it was the most noraml thing in the world. Then he goes and calls the suit of armor Hermione. (giggles more) This fic gets better with every chapter. Smart, sexy and funny! You write one hell of a story my dear! Thanks for the treat it's just what I needed tonight after a grueling day of writing papers and attending grad classess!!!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Ugh! I'm so glad that I'm not in school! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed college. But it's so nice just to go to work, and then when I get home, my life is my own! No homework, no job on top of school, no show to do or project to finish or paper to write. I wouldn't mind going back to take a class or two, but I love not being in school! I'm glad that you liked the "trollop"! It took me some time to decide on a whore alternative. Thanks so much, NQ! :)
Woo-hoo! I really laughed at the scene where Severus talks to the rue and causes it to nod back! You've drawn me into suspense again, wondering what all the whore-talk is about. I'm guessing something such as a fear of Voldemort reading Severus's mind for signs of names of his friends and loved ones so that SS is trying to protect the others by calling them whores, but who knows? I do know that in certain South American tribes one never mentions the name of a deceased friend or relative because to do so will bring on the evil eye or force the soul mentioned to return in ghost form, etc. I also have a plot question: if SS's potion making technique is so influenced by his madness, how will he actually brew the potion? I've noticed in a lot of fanfic that potion brewing requires precise timing, focus, stirring direction, etc. I know Hermione is there now to help him, but SS seemed to think he could brew without her, so I wonder.
Keep on writing! I'm psyched that today both Phantom of Hogwarts and The Price of Madness were updated!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I must keep my mouth shut about the whore business for now, but I love that bit about the South American tribe! Yes, precise timing is often necessary in potion making. And Severus says he's not going to let Hermione help. Poor sod's bound to get into some trouble, isn't he? ;) Thanks so much for the kind review! Phantom of Hogwarts is lovely, isn't it? :)
Ohhh! The plot thickens! So Snape can say her name but can't call her by it. Could the reason be similar to the one why they have to call him Severus? Too close to home maybe?
Love the quote by the way! Right on I say!
Another brilliant chapter! Keep it up!
bye,
Shal
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Severus certainly knows who everyone is, but that whole whore fixation is certainly tripping him up! Thanks so much! :)
I just had to read this and came here. Lovely kiss :).This story is just so engaging.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
This looks like a double, so I'll just say thanks again! :)

I don't blame you! I hate waiting! By my hit counts, I think I've dragged about 400 readers over here from Ash. Good for the PP! I like this archive. Thanks, love! :)
I....love....you!!!!
Thanks for the update...it's nice to know that he can say her name...I just want to know why it is that he can't call someone by their name. Hmmmmm...???
Loving it! gimme more!!! Please?
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Awww! I love you too! You've been kindly leaving me reviews since way back during Naked Journey. I'm afraid that I can't tell you yet why the madman is fixated on the word whore. It would spoil it! I will tell you that it's rather a minor point, so i wouldn't lose any sleep over it. ;) Thanks, love! :)
Ha, this chapter made me laugh as well. Not because of the content, because of the wording ;-)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'll take that as a compliment! Thanks! :)
I laughed, oh I laughed.
Excellently done. I am impressed with your wit and turn of phrase. Looking forward to more.

Well then I feel honored! Thanks! :)
I LOVE IT!! I can't wait for more! You are truly gifted!!

Thank you so much! :)
Another chapter! Woohoo! Poor Severus. The confession was heartrending, especially Severus' reaction before the truth came out. *sigh* I do hope the potion he's making is the cure, and I do hope that it will be ready soonish. The poor pair need a little loving, and I imagine that now that Severus knows about Hermione's feelings, he's going to be relentless. Poor Hermione.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! You've hit the nail on the head! Poor Hermione indeed! Thanks! :)
More! More! This is an amazing story. Please update soon! I'm addicted.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Thank you so much! :)
A sweet chapter
Switzerland? What is Severus thinking about?
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
A chapter or two ago when they were discussing the Goblin banks. I think it's Harry who mentions Switzerland. Thanks! :)
Another wonderful chapter. I especially love the "give and take" between them, and how maddeningly "clear" the very muddled Snape can be, sometimes!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks! :)
'Catchy and appropriate title for the chapter--I loved it. Hermione was so brave to reveal her feelings, although she tortured Severus a little by not outright naming him as the receipent of her affections. And, I can just see Severus squeezing his eyes shut to block out a revelation that Hermione loves someone else. It was very Slytherin of Severus to agree not to offend Hermione's Gryffindor sensibilities and proceed to strip in front of her. His complaint that Hermione didn't peek enough was very cute. (That is to say "cute" in a very manly powerful way.)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! Cute in a many and powerful way! *snicker* I think that Severus meant what he said about not pressing Hermione's sensibilities. But what he considers pressing and what she does may be two very different things! ;) I think hermione did draw it out a bit too far; I think she has gotten a little too used to walking on verbal eggshells around the poor sod. Thanks,

I love this story. I particularly love this chapter. I absolutely love the hair brushing scene.
This reminds of a short story that I loved as a child. It was called Mind Sifter. I don't remember who the author was. It was a story in a book of collective of short Star Trek stories - I think they were the original form of fan fiction, way back in the dark times... before the internet.
Waiting for a new chapter, even if I get teased for the happy noise I make when I find that you have updated.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Lol! I'll tell you a secret. I've been known to squee on occasion myself! Fanfic was around long before the internet. When my sister was very young, she wrote a complete series about the TV show, The Monkees, in which they palled around with a talking cat. It was quite good, actually, especially for how young she was when she wrote it. I read some of those Star trek novels! Uhura's Song was my favorite! I'm not sure I read the story you are speaking of, though. Thanks! :)
