Chapter 38
Chapter 39 of 50
gersknightladyHaving fled the Wizarding World, Hermione comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedI accidentally posted chapter 39 as 38. I apologize to those who read 39 first. We needed to get through the diary chapter first before the last memory bead.
Hermione smiled up at him. "Let's take a shower and have some breakfast first."
Severus nodded and said, "You go first."
Hermione smiled at him. "You could join me. It wouldn't be the first time."
"It would be for me. I'm not ready right now to further our relationship. Please, understand I want to be free of all this, Hermione. If we are to have a life, I want it to be both of our lives. I want to remember falling in love with you the first time."
"First time?" she asked. Her heart skipped a beat as she caught his meaning.
He reached out to cup her face in his hands. "You know I love you. It's ingrained in my heart. I've fought it long enough. It bubbles out of me each time you come into the room. But they are still not my feelings; I wish they were, but they belong to the man named Raven. I want to know his feelings and have us be one complete person who is no longer fragmented. You're right: It is time for me to read the diary in its entirety and view the memories." He paled, let go, and stepped back. "You have no idea how much I dread looking into my mother's mind and seeing our life through her eyes."
Hermione listened to his words, but she knew differently. Severus, you do love me. You just aren't ready to admit you can love. I see it in your eyes and feel it in your touch. You are so different from the first time we had sex. I can wait until you realize it yourself. She said aloud, "I know, Severus. Some of the memories were hard for Raven, even though he did not remember her. But I'm going to be with you each and every moment. You do not need to be afraid of expressing whatever feelings these memories invoke in you. I can handle it. Raven and I did not see all the memories your mother left. I detected a couple more magical beads amongst the strand. So there will be new things for me to see there, as well. You go shower, Severus. I'll go down to the other bathroom and bathe there." She gave him another soft kiss.
Severus watched her leave before going to the closet to find some clothes. He had an overwhelming desire to flee. Severus Snape, spy for Dumbledore and Voldemort, was afraid of feelings from his past...feelings so foreign to him that he'd rather cut off his hand than face them. He stood in the shower a long time, letting the hot water scald his skin before he finally dried off and dressed. He found Hermione working on a breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and coffee. He sat and ate with her in silence. Both of them were deep in their own thoughts.
After the breakfast items were put away, Severus wandered into the living room and stood holding the diary. When Hermione joined him, he sat on the couch with her and opened the diary and began to read it aloud. It took several hours to finish, and then he got up and walked to the old fireplace and stood there for a bit.
"His words are powerful. Yet, I do not remember them. They are from a man I cannot see, a man who exists only as feelings I do not understand. Hermione, it's still not real. Nothing I do seems to bring back that time with you!" He pounded his fist against the stone of the fireplace.
She came to him and held him close. Although he held his body stiffly at first, he finally relaxed against her.
"Severus, you have never had to face your feelings. For years Grendel has taken your pain away. He was a godsend for you at a time when you needed him desperately. But now it's time to face your feelings. We will do all we can to bring back your memories. You know our story now, and you must watch the memories that we took out for you. Maybe they will trigger the desired memories in your own head. Do you have a Pensieve here? I don't remember seeing one when we were here before."
Severus nodded and went across the room to the bookshelf, where he drew a book out and a cabinet opened. Severus picked up the heavy Pensieve and placed it on a small table so they could stand on either side.
Hermione chose the first memory of Raven waking in the alley alone. She poured it into the Pensieve, and the soft silver memory floated over the surface until it was almost a mirror reflecting them back. "Do you want me to go with you?" she asked.
Severus nodded, not taking his eyes off the silver memory.
He took her hand, and they plunged their faces into the memory. Hermione gasped at the sights and sounds of the city she had lived in all those months ago. The stench in the alley was horrible, and she supposed she had become numb to it before.
Snape lay on the ground before them. He groaned and pulled himself into a sitting position. "Where am I?" he asked the silence of the filthy alley. He struggled to his feet, grimacing as his neck pained him. As he reached around, his fingers found the ragged injury. "What the hell," he wondered aloud. His fingers came away with blood on them. He looked around and then down at himself. He pulled open his cloak and tore the hem of his shirt off and wrapped his neck. He fumbled in his pockets and found his wand and two small, empty bottles. "A stick and bottles? What are they for?" But he didn't toss any of them; he replaced them in his robes.
A noise distracted him, and he turned to find a group of young men bearing down on him.
Hermione glanced at Severus and saw his lips set in a straight, unemotional line. His hand was clenched at his side.
They watched as the men surrounded the memory Severus. "What have we here? Look, this guy's just an old drunk. Those are pretty nice threads for an old drunk. Give those here, old man. You have no need of finery in this ally." Severus tried to rise, but they knocked him down again and pulled off his robes, his inner jacket, and his fine shoes. They checked the pockets and found the stick and the empty bottles and tossed them onto the ground. Severus tried to fight, but he was only knocked down again and again.
Hermione had her fist stuck in her mouth, trying not to let Severus hear her cry. She had never seen this memory; she'd only helped Raven remove it.
The last man kicked Severus in the ribs and said, "Thanks, old man." They left him hurt far worse than before and with little clothing to protect him from the cold night.
He lay in a heap for some time and then struggled to his feet. He picked up the bottles and the polished stick, holding onto his side as he made his way through the alley. He came upon a woman digging through trash.
She wore layers of old clothing, all mismatched and dirty. Her hair was long, ragged, and grey, and her face was lined from years of hard living. She looked at him, glanced at his hand holding the polished stick, and gave him a toothless smile. "Hello, deary, what happened to you? Come let Mary see you in the light." There was an old alley lamp hanging out of the building nearby. "I've never seen you around. What's your name, man? It looks like the hoodlums got to you and stole your clothes, didn't they?"
Severus nodded, leaning on to the building for support. His mind was so confused that, when she'd asked him who he was, he had no answer. "I don't know my name," he admitted.
"Deary, you're hurt. Come back to the place I sleep. There's an empty box in the back; its owner vacated last week, if you know what I mean." She continued to jabber on and on. "You say you don't know your name. You got hit on the head." She thought for a long moment and then said, "Raven, I'll call you Raven. With that black hair and beak you have, it fits. Come, you need sleep. Maybe Stumpie's shoes will fit you. He had one arm, you see. That's why we called him Stumpie."
Severus followed the old woman down the alley.
The scene faded, and Severus turned away. "Merlin," he said, "I see it, but it's not me. It's like watching a movie. I was in such trouble and had no way to help myself. That woman saved me. We must find her when all this is over. I can help her now."
Hermione was touched by his words and took him in her arms and held him close. "Do you hear yourself, Severus? You have changed so much. You have sympathy for a mere bag lady. You are already becoming one with Raven."
"Or perhaps the man you knew as Severus Snape was always an actor. I did have a heart, Hermione. I just didn't allow anyone to see it," he said in his own defense.
She said, "You're right, and I have realized that recently. You would not have sacrificed your life for Harry...a child you claim to have hated...if you had not cared. Why didn't you want him to know how much you cared? Why was it such a secret? Don't you realize how good a friend you could have been? Perhaps you could have been the father he needed so desperately."
"It was as it had to be." He pushed her away. "Let's see the next one."
They watched as Hermione found Raven and took him back to her shack. They had read the details already. Severus had now seen her point of view and Raven's, and yet it made no difference. He could not remember. The memories of the first time they made love made him angry with jealousy, and he pulled out after a few minutes of watching it. "Put it back in your head. I do not want to see it. If I am to have that memory, I want it to be from my own head. It's like watching a twin, someone else besides me doing these things with you. What's the last memory?" he asked gruffly.
"It's our first kiss. Raven gave it up because that was when he felt he loved me for the first time. I think it meant as much to him as our first time together. What if we put your memories back in your head? They would be your memories again, Severus, it could trigger everything."
Severus realized the idea terrified him. It would be like letting someone else's memories be installed inside his mind. Intellectually he knew it was ridiculous, but he could not shake the idea.
Hermione was hurt that he did not want the memory back, but she tried hard to look at it from his point of view. Maybe there is something in his mother's memories that would help trigger his own. The woman had to have had a reason for leaving them. Maybe there is an explanation in the memories yet unseen.
They agreed to try a few of the ones that Hermione had already seen. They watched the one of Severus as a baby; it brought him to the same angry tears that Raven had, and the one in the barn made him furious, though he remembered that one first hand. His indignation wasn't as bad as Raven's had been because he also remembered the day in the forest when she had apologized for asking him to kill his father. His anger was gone when he left that one. The idea that she had actually loved him seemed to mollify him a bit. Knowing that she had felt this was important for him to remember, he watched it again with fresh eyes. The parting at King's Cross left him in tears. He clung to Hermione. That parting had been one of the hardest things he'd ever done in his life.
Then came a new one in which they watched him kill his father. He was devastated, and the memory had left tears streaming down his face. Severus looked like a young man near NEWT age. Hermione watched in horror, and Severus stood stony and white, his face nearly drained of blood. It was obviously self-defense; they had been fighting, but this time, Tobias had attacked Severus with a knife. Severus had pulled out the knife his father had embedded in his shoulder and turned to his dad just as Tobias had lunged forward, and the knife plunged into his father's heart. The Bobbies came and ruled the incident as self-defense and carted his father's body away.
Severus was sitting on the floor staring at the bloodstain when Eileen had come at him, screaming, hitting him with her fists, and telling him to go and never come back. She was yelling horrible, nasty, hard words because he had killed his father. But the memory didn't end there.
After he had run from the house, Eileen fell to the floor screaming in pain and rage, "Tobias, you're a bastard! Severus is a wonderful young man, and you did nothing but cripple him emotionally and beat him into the ground. He has such wonderful power and intelligence. You cannot possibly imagine the things your son is destined for, and I am just as much to blame. I should have cursed you to hell years ago when you hit me and Severus saw us fight. I tried to make excuses for your hatred of your own son. I nearly begged the boy to kill you, and I damaged him further. We are both to blame." She was speaking to the bloodstain as if it still was a flesh and blood, hearing body. The air was now thick with the smell of spilt blood. "He's better than both of us together. Without us, he can live a better life and make something of himself. Maybe he'll even find a wife, find love. I will never talk to him again; it is for his own good. He must distance himself from me and this Muggle life I allowed myself to get trapped in. He must make his own life. I am damaged beyond hope, and he needs to be free. I love him so much I must let him go..." She collapsed into the puddle of blood, and the memory faded.
Severus slipped to the floor and cried as Hermione held him tightly against her. Her tears mingled with his.
I want to thank all the people who have helped me read and correct this chapter. I could not do it with out you, Beaweasley2, Becky and Lisa, my beta. Thank you all so much.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

Thank you, the memory seemed necessary tohelp free Severus from his past and give him some freedom to embrace his future.I hope Harry can too. :)

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

Yes Kisses, you know a man and his needs. But she had the same needs. It was a chnace to connect and show him she can be with him as well. Thats she want's to be with him and it's now all Raven. Thanks for hanging in there :)

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.
