Chapter 17
Chapter 17 of 50
gersknightladyHermione flees the wizarding world and comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedAlbus looked at the young man cradled in the even younger woman's arms and said, "Severus Snape was made strong by his experiences. It hardened him into that amazingly talented spy. Voldemort took it all away from you. He left you little more than a child in a man's body. All the hardness, maturity, and pain that was Severus is gone. You don't have to hide your feelings like he did. Raven, what you are now is a wonderful, kind, feeling man. There's nothing wrong with that. If you and Hermione are successful, we can only hope that you will be able to integrate the two men you have been into a whole, kind, gentle man who has strength and leadership abilities."
"Leadership? What for?" he asked curiously.
Minerva stepped forward. "I always hoped you would one day fill my shoes here at Hogwarts."
"What? Be a headmaster?" He laughed. "You've got to be kidding."
"You already filled the position in the past for a short time. You did a good job considering the circumstances."
Raven got to his feet and pulled Hermione with him. "Hermione mentioned that. I can't fathom it." He laughed nervously.
Albus said, "Well, nothing can be done about it all unless you recover who you were. It's ironic that in doing so you could possibly help Harry...the same boy your other life was lived to save."
"Ironic," Raven said dryly.
Hermione, Minerva, and Albus laughed at his tone, which was so like his old self.
*******
Minerva gave Raven a magic backpack that was much like Hermione's bag. He watched gobsmacked as they packed item after item into the bag: a tent, tools, food, clothing for all kinds of weather, books, and potion's ingredients. They also spent a few hours teaching Raven to do spells that would return the items to their normal size and then reduce them back. Poppy came in the evening after dinner and taught Hermione and Raven to do some minor healing spells and Hermione to do some more serious spells. It was a lot to take in.
That evening as they sat before the fire in their common room, they looked carefully through the diary Snape had left Raven. There were other details about the caverns, such as the scent of sulfur and the sound of water dripping in the background. There were extensive notes taken on the sample of moss he had collected that day. And there were maps of the Carpathian Mountains and the areas in which the moss was common. It looked like Snape had spent several summer vacations hunting many of the areas of the mountains and eliminating a number of them. Hermione was grateful for the research included in the diary, and they made a plan based on the remaining areas that he hadn't had time to search.
"Of course, we will have no clue if Voldemort was able to conceal himself from Snape during those searches. He may not have known it was Snape, but he would have made his Lair as invisible as was possible with his extensive knowledge of magic. She was certain that Snape had also known some very serious concealment charms and was pleased he had included some of them at the end of the diary. There were a number of charms and spells that they might find useful in the search.
Raven began to kiss the back of her neck, and soon the book fell to the floor unheaded. He drew her into his lap and kissed her breathless and then slid his hand over her breasts, feeling the nipples harden beneath the robe's fabric. "Enough books for tonight," he whispered against her lips.
She moved to straddle his lap and pushed the robes away from his shoulder and kissed her way down his neck and across his shoulders. He lay back against the pillows and closed his eyes, and she made her way down his body. His fingers slid through her hair as she set his nerves on fire.
*******
They woke in the early morning hours, still wrapped up in each other's arms, on the couch in the common room. They had pulled a knitted blanket over them. Hermione, who was spooned against him, stretched; she loved feeling the length of his naked body against hers.
Raven ran his hand down her side and over her leg. She nearly purred with happiness. "I can't remember ever feeling so content," she whispered to him.
"Neither can I." He chuckled. "Not that I remember anything."
She turned to face him. "If Harry didn't need your help, I would not change who you are for the whole world. I will only hope that when you are Severus Snape again, you will also remember the bond we have formed."
"I also hope I remember. I will certainly make efforts to leave him as much of my memories as possible. Knowing how I feel when I am with you, I do not believe he will ever be happy unless he is with you."
"It's weird to speak of Severus as a totally different person...like he has his own body elsewhere." She caressed his face and placed tiny kisses along his jaw and the corner of his mouth. "You have his face and his scent, like his classroom, which I have always loved. The scent is like the spices of the potions he has brewed all his life. If for some reason he does not remember our time together, I swear I will make him. Raven, I swear to you." She slipped her arms around him and buried her face in his neck, and they both held on tightly until they had to dress for breakfast.
That morning after breakfast, Hermione found herself alone with Minerva in her sitting room while Albus had a private talk with Raven.
"Minerva, do you think I could teach here once all the stuff with Raven and me is settled?"
Minerva gasped and reached out to take the young witch's hands. "Oh, I would love that. If you come here, there is more chance of you and Severus working something out."
"You really love him like a son, don't you?" Hermione observed.
Minerva looked surprised. "I didn't think it showed."
"To me, yes." She added, "Minerva, Raven said when you hugged him, he felt as if a mother was hugging him." Hermione saw the old witch's eyes fill with tears.
"I nearly fainted when I saw him alive. He has been like a son to me. Mine are lost to me. They're off in their own worlds. They seldom communicate. Severus and I were student and mentor when he was young. We always kept our relationship a secret since I was a Gryffindor and he was a Slytherin. But we spent many evenings together. He needed someone so bad, Hermione. Yet I always felt I failed him, and I felt betrayed when he became a Death Eater. As the years went by, we were able to become friends of sorts, but I always mistrusted him. You have no idea how horrified I am to have not believed in him when he came back. Severus tried to make it up to me, with little things like the perfume, but I never quite forgave him for joining Voldemort. Yet I treasured it. I hope since I used it all the time he knew I still cared for him."
Hermione squeezed the old woman's hands. "I'm sure he did. He continued to make it for you, didn't he?" She sat back in her chair. "You have no idea how much I love him right now. I am so scared to lose him. He feels the same way, but our lives have never been ours. They were lived to serve and protect Harry. Even though he doesn't remember Harry, he still feels a sense of duty to him. It seems ingrained in him."
"I'm glad he feels that way. He may be Harry's only hope. I think the spell on Harry may be something similar. The link Voldemort and Harry shared through Harry's mark somehow had a similar effect...like Raven's Dark Mark."
"I think so, too," Hermione agreed.
Minerva said, "I'm glad you love Severus, Hermione. I never thought I'd see such happiness in his face. Whatever happens, I will be on your side if you need help to win him back later.
Later having said their good byes to Minerva and Albus, they returned to the little house on Spinner's End. They collected more things from the lab and took a few books from the library. That night, as they lay in Raven's bed, they didn't talk or make love. They just held each other and thought about the long, difficult trip they would begin in the morning.
*******
They packed their personal stuff in the morning. After warding the house, Hermione took a small box from her pocket and opened it. Inside was a small, metal paperweight. It had been charmed by Minerva to deliver them in a certain area of the Carpathian Mountains.
"Reach out your hand and touch it at the same time I do, and try not to be too afraid. There will be a yanking sensation at your belly button; when the motion stops, we will be in the mountains."
He looked pale but nodded and reached out his hand over the box.
"On three: one, two, three," she counted slowly, and then they were whisked away.
*******
They found themselves in a dense forest on the high cliff of a rocky mountain. Below a river ran through a deep gorge. It was cold, and the first thing they did was slip into warm coats. They already wore thick, turtleneck jumpers and heavy jeans. They had boots of fine leather lined with sheep's wool. They pulled their hoods up around their heads and turned to survey the area around them.
After setting up camp in a secluded area, they stepped into the tent to put their personnal things. Hermione laughed at Raven's shock when he saw the interior of the tiny tent and discovered the magically enhanced rooms. It was similar to the one the Weasley family had used all those years ago at the Quidditch World Cup. The tent had a huge family room and even a magical bathroom. There were several bedrooms, but they chose one and decided they would sleep together.
Raven said, "Minerva probably thought we shouldn't be sleeping together."
Hermione laughed. "You're probably right. You know she is very happy for us."
"Is she? I'm glad," he said.
Hermione waved her wand and the extra bed was replaced by a worktable. She unpacked some of the books, and they spent several hours looking through the cave sites in the same mountain range. They tried to figure out if some of the caves Snape had mapped were known caves.
They decided to start their search at Ursilor Cave in the Apuseni Mountains where they were. Granted this was an established cave with tours, but they had agreed to take the tour and use their wands to detect any magically enhanced areas. Though unlikely, it would have been like Voldemort to flaunt his lair right under Muggle noses.
The tour was fun, and Hermione and Raven where amazed at the wonderful rock formations. The cave housed some of the largest stalactites in Romania. It was like having a vacation day. Raven, having no memory of any of his former life's adventures, was like a kid in a candy factory pointing here and there and dragging Hermione to this and that formation. She didn't remember the last time she'd had such a fun day. After the tour, they sat at the entrance of the cave and had a small picnic lunch. Later that day they returned to the tent and studied the maps and the diary.
After a dinner of cheese, bread, stewed meat, and some wine, they slipped into their warm bed. Raven initiated the lovemaking, and Hermione welcomed it. They gently explored each other with gentle kisses and light touches. Hermione lay clutching the bed covers as he ignited the passion in her body. She thought, How will I ever live without him if he does not want me once we are successful? A tear leaked out the side of her eye, and Raven froze when his lips tasted the tear.
"Am I hurting you?" he asked, alarmed.
She groaned. "No, don't stop, please."
"You're crying," he accused.
"Raven, I'll tell you about it later. Please continue!"
"But..."
"Raven!" she cried out in exasperation.
He grinned. "Your wish is my command, my lady."
*******
Later, as he held her close, she whispered her fears to him, and she could tell by the way he clutched her that he felt the same way.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Yes Kisses, you know a man and his needs. But she had the same needs. It was a chnace to connect and show him she can be with him as well. Thats she want's to be with him and it's now all Raven. Thanks for hanging in there :)

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
