Chapter 27
Chapter 27 of 50
gersknightladyHermione flees the wizarding world and comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedHermione felt a panic she had never known before as she felt the grains of sand pass through her body, but the continued grip of Severus's arm around her kept her from freaking out. Finally, they stood in the outer cavern. Severus let go of her, turned, and strode away. She had to run to keep up with him. He had the tip of his wand lit.
"Severus! Watch the floor; it vanishes. Let me help you get out," she called after him.
He stopped so abruptly that she ran into his back. He turned and gripped her arm so hard that she knew she would have bruises.
"You impertinent girl; you will address me as Sir or Potions Master Snape. I have not given you permission to use my first name." He turned and moved further into the darkness, quickly outdistancing her again.
"Sir," she gulped, "please let me show you how to get out. The cave floor has dangers, and I know the way."
She saw his light stop ahead, and he waited for her to catch up.
He didn't say anything but motioned her in front of him.
Hermione went ahead and showed him the tiny ledge. They slipped over the ledge as quickly as possible and came upon the trussedup, dead dragon.
He looked surprised. "You did this?"
"Raven blinded him, and I chained him."
"Well, the man had bollocks after all."
"Crude, but yes, he had courage. I think it had more to do with making sure I survived than anything else," she said wistfully, wishing he were there with her.
They got to the mouth of the cave, and he eyed the huge web. "Where's the spider?"
"It's dead and at the bottom of the gorge. It was more than a spider."
"Do you have a broom, Granger?"
"Yes, sir," she said, fishing out the broom from her bag and expanding it.
He took it from her, mounted it, and motioned for her to get on. She did and then clasped him around the waist. She laid her cheek against his back and closed her eyes. Breathing in the scent that was Raven gave her courage. She felt him stiffen against her, but he did not rebuke her.
They flew out over the gorge. Then, in an act Hermione had never seen, they Apparated broom and all and landed before the entrance to Snape's cavern.
Snape entered the cavern and shouted, "Grendel!" The animal tackled Snape, knocking him down and licking him all over the face.
Hermione stood gobsmacked as Snape actually laughed and wrestled with Grendel.
"How are you my old friend?" he said, getting to his feet. He tousled the fur on the top of Grendel's head. "Granger, shut your mouth. You're gaping." He strode off into the cave.
Grendel came to Hermione, bounced around her, and licked her hand. They followed his master into the cave.
Inside Snape's lair, she watched as he kicked off his boots and walked around.
"You've been messing with my things. I did not leave them in this order."
"I'm sorry, sir. Raven and I stayed here for a few weeks. We had to spend some time studying the spells you left us in your journal."
"I assumed you found the journal in Minerva's office. It is still her office, isn't it? She survived the war, didn't she?"
Hermione heard a bit of hesitant fear there. Before the war, she would not have been able to recognize all the nuances in Snape's voice, but she knew Raven so well that she could read so much more now. Snape was not as black and white as he had seemed all those years...or was it because of Raven that there were changes in him?
"Minerva is fine. She was very happy to see you were alive and a bit devastated that it wasn't really you. She loves you, you know?"
Snape just shot a glare at her and then walked away. He went to his desk and sat behind it. "Miss Granger, do not presume to know me. The man you spent time with all these months is no longer here."
Hermione couldn't stop the tears that swam into her eyes and fell down her cheeks.
"Tears!" He sneered. "No one cries for me."
"That's right!" she cried. "No one cries for you, but I cry for Raven. He was a wonderful human being."
She went to the bed, crawled in, and turned her back to the cave.
"Granger, that is my bed!" he growled.
"You are welcome to share it," she sniffled over her shoulder.
"Not bloody likely," he said.
"Suit yourself. I didn't sleep well last night, and I'm exhausted."
"Bloody brat," he said under his breath. How could he in any lifetime sleep with that insufferable know-it-all? He went and found a bottle and got very drunk.
*****
Severus woke with a pounding headache. He suddenly realized that he was in his own bed, and there was a body pressed against his. Her arm was around his waist, and her cheek was against his back. He could feel her warmth through his clothing. He was about to move away when she stretched against him and her lips pressed against his neck. The softness of her kiss surprised him so much that he froze.
"Raven," she murmured in her sleep.
Severus saw red and dragged himself away, waking her at the same time.
"He's gone; you forget your place."
Hermione saw anger and something else she could not put a name to flash across his face. Was it disappointment?
"I'm sorry, sir. I didn't realize you had joined me."
Snape ran his fingers through his hair. "No... I was drunk. It is not my habit to come to a woman's bed uninvited."
"This is our bed. Well, your bed."
Snape said, "Look, Miss Granger. I know this is a very strange situation for you; it is for me, too. There is much to talk about and much to consider."
"You would consider continuing our relationship?" she asked hopefully.
"Hardly," he said. "But I do need to know what I have been doing and where I was all this time. You will supply me with the information I want. Then you can go back to your own life, and I will be free to get on with mine." He left her sitting there.
Hermione felt as if her heart would jump from her breast. She turned her back to the cave again and pulled the covers over her face. She used the pillow to muffle her cries.
Snape sat at his desk, oddly feeling a tightness and an overall nervousness as he listened to her muffled tears. He was not without sympathy. Who was this Raven who had captured her heart so completely? Was that part of him still alive inside himself? He growled and grabbed another bottle. He could not block out her cries, and it tore at his heart. If Raven was going to be nothing but pain to him, then he didn't need him. After a time, he no longer heard the crying, nor was he aware when the tears stopped.
Hermione came from the bed and stood over him. He was asleep. His head had fallen forward onto the desk, and a nearly empty bottle was on the table. Was Snape in so much pain that he had to drown himself in drink? This was where she had found Raven, anesthetized with drink. If her tears were causing him pain, then she had to stop. She vowed she would not let him see her cry again. She gently caressed his long hair and then went to bathe and dress.
*****
Severus woke with his head still pounding. He had a terrible neck ache from having slept in the chair. He could hear Grendel's snores from his corner of the cave. He heard dishes rattling and smelled a wonderful aroma. He realized he was starving. He struggled to his feet and used a cleansing spell on himself. For now, the black jeans and plaid shirt he had been wearing when he woke would have to do. He rubbed at his stiff neck and went to see what Miss Granger was up to.
She was dishing out bowls of stew and had placed glasses of water from the spring on the table.
She looked up at him when he came near. "Dinner is ready. I'm sorry, I'm not much of a cook."
"I'm sure it will be fine." He spooned the stew into his mouth. "Passable," he said.
She smiled. That was high praise from Snape. She sat across from him and ate.
"I apologize for my drunkenness; it's an old habit."
She didn't say anything.
"I realize you must have sacrificed a lot to get me back to Voldemort's lair. Your life has been on hold. I do not want you to think me ungrateful. You will be well paid."
"I did not do it for money, sir. You insult me. Do not assume anything until you have heard my story."
He looked steadily into her eyes, seeing the flash of anger. "Again, I apologize. I am not accustomed to being in anyone's debt. I've always had my own to pay."
"Sir, there is no debt. I helped you because I needed something to help me continue living at the time. When I found you, it was a saving grace for me as well as for you. I have told you we became friends."
"I cannot fathom that, Miss Granger."
"Sir, surely two people who have had the sort of relationship we have had could at least be on first name basis. Please call me Hermione."
Her request was reasonable. He ducked his head in agreement. "Hermione. I will try to control my tongue, but you know me. Words are not easy for me."
"I know, Severus. I will try not to take offense. I apologize for my weakness earlier. I tried to prepare myself for this eventuality, but it is harder to live through than I imagined."
Severus rubbed at his neck. "I cannot understand your willingness to be involved with me. There are so many years between our ages. I have never in my life been nice to you and your friends. You do understand it was mostly an act to keep Voldemort from suspicion, don't you?"
She nodded, noting again that he was rubbing his neck. "Please, sir, may I massage the knot out of your neck? I have gotten some practice over the last months."
He normally wouldn't have let her touch him, but the pain was unbearable, and his head was still pounding.
He nodded. She went to his own shelves of potions and brought back a pain reliever and a salve for his neck. He downed the potion in one swallow and then pulled his hair forward and to the side out of her way. She pulled the collar of his shirt down. Applying some salve to her fingers, she gently but firmly rubbed it into the tissues of his neck, working at the knot Raven often got from sitting at his desk too long reading or writing.
He closed his eyes and let his head drop forward. He could not remember anyone's touch being as therapeutic as hers was. Again, he felt the familiarity of her touch. He wished he could remember what they'd had. The woman was beautiful. He couldn't deny that in his own mind. If he could remember, maybe he would find a relationship with her not so bizarre. He was having a hard time separating the fuzzy-haired child of 11 from the woman whose fingers felt like magic against his skin. He felt her fingers slip down beneath his shirt. It startled him, and he stood, nearly knocking her off balance.
"Thank you, that will do. I'm going to feed Grendel," he said, hurrying away.
Hermione rubbed her hands together and smiled after him.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
LOL yes, he has become quite considerate. Love has opened up his world.

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

Thank you, the memory seemed necessary tohelp free Severus from his past and give him some freedom to embrace his future.I hope Harry can too. :)

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

Yes Kisses, you know a man and his needs. But she had the same needs. It was a chnace to connect and show him she can be with him as well. Thats she want's to be with him and it's now all Raven. Thanks for hanging in there :)

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
