Chapter 35
Chapter 35 of 50
gersknightladyHaving fled the Wizarding World, Hermione comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedThey returned to Hogwarts early the next morning and resumed their duties. Hermione went to check the potion, and Severus went to his classes. He knew he could practice the song and spell at night. His research had ended, so he immersed himself in his work and realized he loved teaching Potions.
In the next few weeks, he made changes in his classroom. He no longer kept the room in darkness unless the potions his student's were brewing called for it, and he gave more points than he took. The students seemed to respond to his newfound pleasure. They seemed to actually enjoy the work and turned in high-quality essays.
Hermione continued to monitor the potion every day, although it needed fewer and fewer ingredients.
A few evenings a week, they would meet in a corner of the library and talk or wrap themselves in heavy cloaks and walked down to the lake. They tried not to show any physical closeness when students or staff members were around. Christmas was looming closer, and decorations had started to pop up here and there. Severus had always quoted his favorite Muggle holiday book when faced with holiday merriment: Bah Humbug. But this year he found himself looking at the decorations with enjoyment. He had to stop himself from singing carols a time or two when he passed the choir practicing for the holiday program.
Hermione and he had agreed they wouldn't sleep together at Hogwarts again until the potion was done and the results were known. At that time, they would decide what their future would be. They did slip away to Spinner's End once or twice.
On evenings when Hermione was busy with her own classwork or checking the potion, Severus would sit by his fire and think about his life.
He felt lighter and less burdened than he had in years. He knew it was because he had Hermione in his life. His only frustration was Raven. He wished he could remember his life as Raven; he knew Raven and Hermione had loved each other. And he knew she cared deeply for him now. Was he ready for real, true, heart-stopping love? Or, more logically, was he truly capable of it? He didn't believe he was worthy of her love. He feared she would look within him and see the monster he had been, and it would repel her. He had felt love the night they had visited the Gypsy camp. But Severus Snape didn't love; he'd now convinced himself that it had been Raven in charge.
Severus Snape, retired spy extraordinaire, was scared of his past catching up with a future he'd never dreamed of. Once Harry was saved, would she really still need him? Would she realize he was just an old grumpy Potions master living in a drafty old castle? She was young; she might want children. The idea of children had never occurred to him, at least not in many years. His thoughts where interrupted as Hermione swept into the room and plopped herself on his couch.
"Two more days," she announced.
"I'm aware of that," he said, putting the book he'd been holding on the table next to his chair.
"I know. I'm just making conversation. Would you rather I leave?" Her exhaustion was making her grumpy, and she'd hoped for a bit of snuggling with him, but he didn't seem to be in the mood.
He sighed, got up from his chair and sat next to her, slipping an arm around her shoulders and drawing her close. "No, I do not want you to leave."
"I'm sorry, Severus. I should have knocked. Just because your wards allow me in doesn't mean I should assume I can come anytime."
"Hermione, you may come anytime. Just do not always expect me to be in a great mood. I am the grumpy Potions master after all."
She giggled a bit and slipped an arm around his waist. "But you are my grumpy old Potions master." She placed a kiss on his chin.
He sighed and kissed her forehead. "I do not deserve this contentedness."
Hermione turned to look into his face. "Severus, you more than most deserve happiness."
"I think a lot of Voldemort's victims might disagree with you."
"As you have reminded me, it was war. We all did things we aren't proud of. The end justified the means. Why are you having a pity party?"
"You did know me well before I regained my memory, but now you may not realize I spend a lot of my time regretting my past. If you want to be a part of my life, you're going to have to get used to it."
Hermione turned a beautiful smile his way and slid into his lap, "Well, we will just have to make your future so good you have no time to dwell in the past." Her kiss made him forget even the present.
They'd spent a bit of time kissing and then talked about the end of the war. Hermione told Severus about last moments of the war and Neville killing Nagini. She had told the story to Raven, but since Severus didn't know, she explained again.
"I guess I owe that young man a debt of gratitude for killing my near murderer. That snake was a monster," he said, shuddering.
*****
The next night Hermione was working late in her classroom and Severus had walked out to the gate of the castle. He stood for a moment and looked back at the magnificent castle, his home. He let himself out the gates and Disapparated.
Severus stepped up to the doors of the magical St. Mungo's. His wand signature allowed him to enter the hospital. He made his way to a desk and asked for a room number. He then went down the hall and up several floors to the Spell Damaged ward. He scanned the names on the doors as he went down the hall and finally came to his destination.
He slipped into the room. Because this was not a Muggle hospital, there were no machines humming and clicking away. There was a soft glow of a ward over each patient. The wards would alert the Healers and nurses on the floor if anything would go wrong with the patients.
He stood in Harry's room and looked down at the "boy." He looked more like a man now. He was relieved that he didn't have to look into Lily's eyes. He reached out with his thoughts and found a dark, impenetrable barrier. Having learned what he wanted to know, he left the room as silently as he had entered.
He followed the hallway down to the Longbottoms' room. The pair lay sleeping in their beds. He reached out with his thoughts and found Frank's mind impenetrable, black, and silent. Alice's mind seemed only partially impaired. He knew that she had some motion and ability to do simple things like eat and sit up. Her mind was only partially eclipsed by the spell. Bellatrix, probably having learned this spell from Voldemort, had only partially impaired the woman. Yes, he was certain that it was the same spell. Neville had played an important role in the war, killing the snake that had nearly killed him. He ran his fingers over the faint scars on his neck. Another young boy had been robbed of his parents because of that monster. Severus felt a sense of kinship with them...for their loss and sacrifices, which had led to the life he had now. He hoped he could restore them, but they had been under the curse for many years. Would they be mentally challenged? Would Neville want them restored? He heard a noise behind him and turned to behold the man that Neville Longbottom had grown into.
"Professor... Snape?"
Severus turned and extended his hand. "Mr. Longbottom."
Neville suddenly looked a bit like the scared young man he'd intimidated in class. But he extended his hand and shook Snape's. "I heard you had returned to Hogwarts, sir."
"Yes, it's a long story. Suffice it to say, Miss Granger found me and brought me back. I understand I have you to thank for Nagini's demise."
Neville swallowed and ducked his head. "Yes... It was a lucky swing."
"I doubt that. You were an accomplished DA member." He smiled.
Neville stared at him as if he'd grown two heads, and Snape laughed.
Neville stared and choked.
"I'm sorry, Neville, for making your Potions class so miserable. I was quite a miserable excuse for a teacher back then. I really have not lost my mind; I've regained it. Much has happened to me in the last six months."
Neville nodded, not sure if he could believe him. "Why are you here, sir?"
"Neville, I have a question to ask you, and I need you to really consider it. There may be long-lasting ramifications. I also need you to keep it to yourself for now."
Neville swallowed and nodded. What could Snape want of him?
"Hermione Granger and I have discovered a spell and potion that might return Harry to his life."
Neville nodded and a confused smile broke out on his face. "That would be great, sir. But why are you here?" He waved his hands to indicate his parents' room.
"It may be possible to wake your parents, as well, with the same spell," Severus informed him.
"What?" Neville paled and might have fallen had Snape not grabbed his arm and pushed him down into the chair between his parents' beds.
"I'm sorry to spring this on you, but since your parents have been like this so many years, there may be more risks. I need you to tell me if you want me to try."
"What risks?"
"I can only guess. There may be some brain damage, physical handicaps, or memory loss. Voldemort had a very specific spell book in his possession. He likely shared it with Bellatrix, who was his most loyal servant. I now have that book. Hermione Granger and I have been preparing a potion and studying the spell. We are confident that we can revive those affected. Would you rather they stay this way, or should we try to free them and then work with what we get?" He stopped a moment to let the young man think. "Neville, be sure this is what you want. I have no guarantees for you. I cannot say this won't be an experiment. It will be. It's a spell that hasn't been used in centuries. It may seem cruel to you that we try your parents first. Harry Potter does not deserve a life free from the curse any more than they do."
Neville looked at his parents and then said, feeling hope for them the first time in his life, "Do it. I trust you to do your best, Professor Snape. I understand about Harry. After all, he saved our world with your help."
Severus was grateful for his understanding and a bit surprised to get some credit. It made him feel warm inside. The feeling was odd, and he frowned. Then covering, when he saw Neville grimace, he said, "Severus. You're an adult now, Neville. Call me Severus."
Neville turned pink but stammered out, "Sev... er... us."
Severus smiled and squeezed his shoulder as he passed by. "I will let you know when we are ready. Please do not tell any one at this time."
"Luna..." he protested.
"Okay, you can tell Miss Lovegood. I can understand that, but no one else Neville," he instructed firmly.
"I want to be able to conduct the spells in private. I'm sure you would not want the likes of Rita Skeeter hovering anywhere near."
"Oh no, sir. That woman gives me the creeps," Neville agreed.
"As she does all of us," he said with a laugh. "I will contact you tomorrow, and we can make the arrangements with the hospital. The potion will be ready tomorrow."
Neville stared at the door after Snape left and then turned with tears in his eyes. Would it be possible to get his parents back? He'd just been telling Luna the other day that he would have loved to have his parents at their wedding, which was only a month away.
He put his head on his knees and cried.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
