Chapter 28
Chapter 28 of 50
gersknightladyHermione flees the wizarding world and comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedSeverus spent the evening looking at the book of spells. His eyes were alight with the enjoyment of new knowledge. Hermione had a book in her hands as well, but she was not really reading it. Instead, she kept stealing glances at him over the edge of the book.
"Granger," he admonished, "stop gaping at me."
"I'm sorry, sir."
He sighed, putting the book aside. "Tell me how you found me."
She put her book down and moved her chair a little closer to his desk. "My parents were murdered by Death Eaters after the war."
His eyes widened, and he leaned toward her. "My condolences."
She nodded. "I found them, and the pain was more than I could bear. I ran from the house and into the city, hiding my wand and abandoning my life." She told him about finding him and how he had been.
He didn't comment but listened carefully.
Hermione left out how he'd tried to manhandle her. She didn't see much point. She'd forgiven him long ago and felt as if it had happened to someone else.
She told him about having taken Raven to Spinner's End. "Severus, I could fill you in on all that happened there, but you have Raven's own words and feelings. It might be best if you read his journal. I would be happy to clarify anything you might have questions about."
He had taken the book from his jacket pocket earlier and had laid it on the desk. He bent forward and touched the cover. "I find I dread reading it."
"Why, Severus?" she asked in a soft voice.
It seemed to caress him, and he felt soothed by it. "Your Raven seems to have been a very gentle man. That is a quality I do not have...nor have I ever had. I doubt I will understand it, and it seems as if it might be an invasion of your privacy if he speaks of intimate details from your time together."
"I understand, but you need to know how it was for us. I want you to know how it could be if you would just give us a chance. I am going to go to bed; it's late. There is plenty of room, and I will try very hard not to touch you if you wish to sleep in the bed with me. You are welcome to put a magical barrier between us if it makes you more comfortable."
He nodded and watched her get up and move away into the darkness at the other end of the cave. He saw a small candle light by the bed. When he saw her pull the robe she had been wearing over her head, he averted his eyes. He picked up the journal and opened the cover.
Severus,
I am writing this journal because Hermione wishes it. I understand her reasons. If we are successful and you regain your life and I am lost, you need to know what happened. I have been with Hermione only a few weeks, and already she and I sleep together. It seemed so natural and so easy for me. I have very strong feelings for her. Do not underestimate her feelings for us. You would be a fortunate man to receive her love. She has told me much about you. My deepest fear is that you will not allow yourself the comfort she can give you. I am part of you, so you are capable of loving her with all your heart. Do not be stubborn, man. I know she was once a child and a student of yours. But she is a woman now.
To our history...
Severus read the first pages. Raven had repeated the first meeting and also had told him of his despicable handling of Hermione in his drunken state. He begged Severus to stay away from alcohol. "It will only cloud your mind. I am much better off without it, and Hermione deserves better than how we can be drunk," he said, reading the quote aloud.
He read a few passages that made his ears redden with their descriptions of the young woman who now slept in his bed. His body ached for a woman who really was not his.
He skipped many pages and read that Raven had left a few of his memories on the shelves with the vial labeled "Last Will and Testament."
"Severus, if you walk away from Hermione, I can guarantee that you will never be happy. She is our completeness. Look for me inside yourself. With all that she has made me, you can find that happiness, too.
Severus read through the weeks of Hermione's entries, grimacing as she described his regression into childhood. He even laughed a bit at how uncomfortable she was while having to bathe and dress him as a mother would a child. It seemed as if it had all happened to someone other than himself. But he found in the deepest reaches of his hidden thoughts that he envied Raven.
Severus tossed the book on the desk. He didn't want to feel what Raven wanted him to. He could not face this yet...maybe never. Feelings and love hurt so badly. He'd spent a lot of years burying his feelings. He felt as if chaos would ensue if he allowed himself to feel.
He stood for a time looking down at Hermione. She was sleeping in a satin gown that seemed to slide over her skin with such softness, and he wanted to reach out and touch her. Her hair fanned over the pillow, making her look like a sleeping princess. Her lashes were thick on her rosy cheeks, and her lips were full and inviting. He shook himself and scowled at her.
Severus pushed the feelings down behind his usual barriers and was relieved as the feelings died down. He also felt disappointment, and he didn't think it came from himself. The part that was Raven had no voice, and he realized that Raven had been his feelings. He would have to rid himself of the woman as soon as possible. Love had always hurt him.
He stared at a bottle craving the mindlessness it would put him in. Then he remembered Raven's words; with a sigh he transformed a table behind his desk into a small bed and crawled in, pulling his cloak over him.
*******
Hermione woke a few hours later and noted with disappointment that Severus had chosen to sleep elsewhere. But she couldn't expect miracles, and at least he had been civil.
She saw that Raven's journal lay closed on the desk. Had he read it? If so, he knew how she felt and how Raven had felt about her, and he had still chosen to sleep elsewhere. She blinked away the sudden tears that sprung to her eyes. No crying.
She prepared breakfast and gave Grendel a treat when he came to nuzzle at her hand. He looked over at Severus and seemed to be confused. He'd grown to like Raven very much and accept that they slept together, and this new arrangement puzzled him. Hermione wondered how much he really did understand.
"Go get your master. It's time for breakfast," she told the animal.
She watched as he went over and nuzzled Severus' face, and finally the wizard woke up.
"What, old friend?" he asked.
"Breakfast is ready," Hermione called.
Severus scowled at her. "You're not my maid. I can get my own food."
Hermione turned away. "Suit yourself." So, he was going be the tough guy today. He'd let his guard down somewhat last night, and now he was regretting it. She'd known he would find it hard to understand all the things she and Raven had experienced. She had fully expected Severus to hide behind the carefully placed barriers he was used to living behind.
Severus watched her turn away, and he felt the loss of her smile. Then he forced the twinge of feeling away. She would poison his life if he let her in. They all did.
Hermione was eating breakfast when he came from the bathroom and got his own bowl of porridge from the stove and took some dried fruit to go with it.
He went to sit at his desk. She saw him put the journal away in a drawer.
She finished her meal and then came to stand before him until he acknowledged her.
"Did you read the journal?"
"Not much," he said, annoyed and wishing she'd go away.
Hermione was terribly disappointed but decided to change the subject. "Will we go back to Hogwarts to see Minerva and Albus?"
"Albus?" He blanched. "He's dead."
"Yes. Severus, I'm sorry. When you talk to his portrait, you forget he's not really alive."
He nodded. "I'm not sure he would want to see me," he said scathinglly.
"Your wrong, sir. He was delighted to see Raven, and when Raven asked him if he hated him for killing him, Albus forgave him."
"Why would Raven take responsibility for my actions?" he asked gruffly. "You say Albus forgave him?"
Hermione saw hope in his eyes. "Of course he did. He asked you to do it, and you gave him what he wanted even if he shouldn't have asked. I'm not sure I forgive him for putting you in that position."
Severus nearly smiled. "It was war." Then he asked, "Are you certain I have been exonerated for my war crimes? I do not wish to go back to be arrested and placed into Azkaban."
"Yes, you have. I believe Minerva plans to hand you the Headmaster's office in a couple years. If you come back."
"Go back to teaching?" he said sarcastically. "I always loved it so much."
"You were the best teacher there. You taught me so much. If you hadn't, I would never have been able to complete the potion that gave you back your life."
He looked at her with a touch of surprise in his eyes. Pride filled his heart, and then a longing forced itself to the surface and hit him with pain. He could not feel for this woman... he could not... She was not his to feel for.
He stood. "I need to go. You can get yourself back to Hogwarts."
"What!"
Hermione stood shocked as he grabbed his cloak and said to Grendel, "Guard duty, my friend."
Then he was gone...Apparating to who knows where. He'd taken nothing with him. He'd left the memories and journal behind.
Hermione stared at the spot where he had stood. What had happened? The conversation hadn't been emotional, had it? She'd seen something in his eyes seconds before he'd left.
"Raven! It was Raven, and he had scared the hell out of Severus with his emotions!"
She ran around the cave collecting her things, and she took the journal and the memories with her. She hugged Grendel, leaving wet tears on his neck.
"Dobby?" she called, collapsing to her knees with emotional exhaustion and fear mixed with hope.
"Miss...Miss..." She could hear him calling to her.
"Take me to Minerva." She felt herself slip into darkness.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
LOL yes, he has become quite considerate. Love has opened up his world.

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
