Chapter 16
Chapter 16 of 50
gersknightladyHermione flees the wizarding world and comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedLater in Headmistress McGonagall's office, Raven and Hermione listened as she told them all the things that they should take with them on their trip. As it was late in the afternoon, Minerva suggested they stay the night in guest quarters. That way, they could observe Snape's memories tomorrow.
Hermione was given a room next to Raven's in a wing not occupied by students at that time. It was used for guest quarters during special ceremonies...often housing dignitaries or parents. The rooms were huge and had the customary four-poster beds in house colors.
Raven agreed to stay in the Gryffindor corner. There was a common room much like the Gryffindor common room. Raven and Hermione cuddled up on the sofa in front of the fire. She sat with her back to his chest.
"It's wonderful to be here in the castle. I loved it here as a child. Classes, friends..." Her voice trailed off as sharp memories of Harry and Ron hit her.
As if reading her mind, Raven asked, "This Ron, you never talk about him. What happened between you?"
Hermione took a shuddering breath. "We were friends for years. The three of us grew up together. Like the three Musketeers, my mum would often call us. Puberty hit, and it got awkward between Ron and I. I developed a crush on him. But he was a git and couldn't see it. He had a girlfriend for a time. It was a very painful time in our lives. We put poor Harry in the middle of it. Then the war came; by then Ron and I had worked our way back to each other before the final battle. I guess I thought our future held marriage and children. When he died, part of me died."
Raven had wound his fingers into hers, and she stared at their joined fingers. She felt him stiffen a bit behind her. She turned toward him, slipped her arms around his neck, and held him close.
"Raven, since I met you, since we have become close, this is the first time I've felt I can let that all go. I have a life again and someone I care for very deeply." She heard him sigh, and he relaxed against her. "Please don't ever feel jealous of Ron. He's the past. You're my present..."
"And future?" he asked.
She drew back and smiled at him. "Well, I didn't want to presume."
Raven caressed her cheek with his fingers. "I don't want to ever be without you, Hermione."
"Ever?" she said, her voice getting a bit husky with desire.
"Never, ever." He kissed her deeply, and she buried her hands in his hair.
"Raven, please stay in my room with me tonight. I don't want to be alone here. There are so many memories."
He stood and drew her to her feet. "Let's make some new ones."
Arm in arm they went into her room and shut the door.
*********
Breakfast in the Great Hall in the morning was an experience. They were seated at the head table. Raven again wore the glamour. Hermione wore one too, still not wanting to be recognised. As she looked out over the school she realized how much she loved it. And as she sat looking at all the faces before her, she realized something else: She wanted to teach. She wanted to teach here at Hogwarts. But if Raven remembered who he was, would he want to come back here and continue teaching? McGonagall had let it slip during the breakfast that the teacher who was teaching Potions was temporary and would be gone when this year was over. They would also need a Charms teacher. Granted, they were only a third into the year. Maybe it would give them the time they needed to figure out what their lives were going to be. She knew it was silly to hope things would work out. They still had a long, dangerous search before them, and neither knew what would happen if the search was successful. But maybe she could at least tell Minerva her thoughts before they left.
*******
Again they stood in Minerva's office with Dumbledore in attendance. One of the memory vials had been poured into the Pensieve, which sat on a low table in the center of the room. The three travelers stood around the bowl. Minerva took one of each of their hands, and they leaned forward and plunged their faces into the silver memory.
They found themselves in a dark forest. There was a fire burning in the center of a circle of Death Eaters. A man kneeled before Voldemort. "You are young, and I will forgive you this once. If you ever hesitate to follow my orders again, you will not be so fortunate. Do you understand?"
The man kneeling at his feet kissed the Dark Lord's shoes. "Yes, my Lord, I will not fail you again."
"Crucio!" Voldemort cried out. His wand waved, and the body of the Death Eater contorted in agony at his feet. He writhed so much that his mask fell away.
Hermione, Minerva, and Raven watched in horror as a young Severus Snape was revealed.
The scene faded and they found themselves in a dark, old house. Severus, only a few years older, was hiding behind a door. Voldemort could be seen pacing the room, and a rather beautiful Bellatrix Lestange stood close by, watching him with a look of adoration on her face.
"You're certain of the origin of this book?" He held a heavy, leather-bound book.
"Yes, it belonged to Salazar Slytherin himself. There is a spell to change the Mark your followers already bear. There will be no doubt of their loyalty; and if their betrayal causes you injury, their minds will be stolen from them and locked forever from their recall, unless you so desire to restore them." She fawned over him. Her hands moved seductively over his legs as she prostrated herself before him. This Voldemort still looked human, more like the young Tom Riddle.
Voldemort swooped down and grabbed Bellatrix by the neck and dragged her to her feet. Her nose was one inch from his. "If you ever breathe a word to anyone about this magic, I will cut your brain from your skull while you live. There will be no going back for you. Do you understand?"
Bellatrix turned a pale shade of gray and fell back at his feet. "I will never breathe a word. It is already forgotten."
"See that it is." He hissed, kicked her away from him, turned toward the door, and strode from the room.
Severus barely had a chance to jump behind the door.
Again the scene faded, and the three observers found themselves in a dark cavern. An unmasked Severus Snape stood before Voldemort; he was in his late 30s and looked much like Raven did today. Voldemort, snakelike and repulsive, was staring at the Potions master. "Are you certain no one saw you leave tonight?"
"Quite certain, my Lord."
Voldemort turned, and his hand swept the width of the cavern. "This is my home, Severus. You have proven your loyalty, my favorite of servants. I wanted you to see what can be yours if you deliver the Potter brat to me."
"Look, Severus. Look at the vast dark magic I have accumulated. Look at the treasures I would willingly share with my MOST faithful servant if you bring the boy to me."
The cavern was laden with piles of gold, jewels, and works of art. Books filled rough, wooden shelves; there was a vast library. Severus looked on with eyes hungry for the knowledge they held.
"You will bring me the boy and watch while I cut the heart from his chest. You and I will feast on it together."
He grabbed Severus' arm and, with the wave of his wand, opened a deep wound on Severus' hand. Producing a parchment, he pressed a bloody hand print into the paper and added a print of his own. If you fail me in this assignment I will take all that you know and care about. It will be but one thought in my mind, and it will be gone. Do not fail me." Voldemort pushed Severus back, and then he fell to his knees. "Activate your Portkey and return to Hogwarts. I will soon call you back, and you will bring the boy to the place of my choosing."
The observers saw Severus pull at some vegetation in the crevices of the wet, humid cavern floor. He slipped it into his pocket.
"Yes, my Lord." Severus bowed and backed away. Again the scene faded, and they found themselves in Snape's rooms at Hogwarts seconds after his return from the cave.
Severus had fallen to his knees. "Lily, I will protect him. I have promised. My life is forfeit, and my memory forfeit if I can save your son for you." The words were spoken to the empty room.
The memory faded, and the three observers stood again in the Headmistress' office.
Raven was pale and slipped into a chair. Hermione went to her knees beside him.
"It was not only the Mark but a blood oath," Minerva said with horror. "Albus, it was a blood oath." She said looking toward the portrait. Then filled him in on what they had seen.
"It's worse than we feared," Albus admitted, "but it's not insurmountable. If the spells or charms he used are recorded in that cavern of knowledge, you will be able to break them. There is nothing we can do here. If you wish to do this, wish to help Harry, the sooner you start the better." He told the young couple. "Tomorrow, Minerva, you will ask Dobby to collect the things that he can here at the castle. You will go with Hermione and Raven to Hogsmeade and buy the rest."
"Hermione, do you still own that magic bag?" Dumbledore asked.
"Yes," she said, pulling it from inside her robe. "It was the only thing I kept with me after I left my home."
"I'm pleased you kept it. It will be invaluable on this trip. I believe we can find one for Raven, too, so you won't have to carry everything." He looked down at Raven who was still in the chair. "Are you okay, Son?"
Raven nodded. "Was I that harsh? My face was so hard, so impenetrable. There was evil radiating off me. How could I have given my allegiance to such a man? What kind of person was I?"
"You were a very misguided one," Albus said kindly. "You had been given little care over your entire life, and his followers offered you friendship and belonging. I often blamed myself for not making your life at this school easier."
Hermione sighed. She had hoped to keep the nature of Severus' life at Hogwarts from him.
He looked at her. "You did not tell me I had a hard time here."
Hermione shook her head. "Raven, I only saw a few glimpses of your life here. You shared a few memories of your sacrifices for Harry with him the day you "died," vanished as it were. Harry's father hated you, and his friends often ganged up on you. Lily, Harry's mother, was your childhood friend, and she fell in love with James Potter. I think you joined Voldemort to get away from your feelings of betrayal and maybe to initially get power to hurt James with, but you betrayed them all by relaying part of a message you heard. What you heard ultimately led to James and Lily's deaths. You spent the rest of your life trying to protect her son; in doing so, you put yourself at great risk all of your adult life as a double agent. The power of your mind is phenomenal. You were able to keep that secret from Voldemort even though he had the power to read your thoughts."
Raven had turned away from her. She grabbed him by the front of his robe and pulled him close. "You made up for that error of youth by saving many, many countless Order members. You showed Harry how to defeat that monster, and you saved our world."
"She's right, my boy," the old headmaster said. "You did all that and so much more that you have shared with me these many years. Countless times you managed to thwart Voldemort's plans one way or another. Lives were saved and sometimes lost. You'd grieve for them...sometimes at the bottom of a bottle...and I knew your heart broke. That maniac tortured you many times. Poppy would stitch you up with magic. Yet you still pulled yourself up and went back time after time. The Wizarding world has no clue of the debt they owe you."
Minerva looked on with tears streaming down her face. She'd had her reservations about the feelings between Snape and Hermione, considering the age difference; but as she watched the young woman soothe and heal the older man with her love, she let those doubts go. She was grateful to Hermione for the heart full of love she had and for the fact that she was able to love her "son." For many years she had been hurt by the cloak of evilness that Snape had wrapped about himself in order to survive Voldemort. She had watched others who felt betrayed by his duplicity even when Albus had vouched for Severus. Even she had doubted the old man's belief in Snape a time or two. It had driven a wedge between her and Albus. She had thought she'd let go of the old hurt and pain after the war, but today she realized she would have to have a heart-to-heart talk with her old headmaster.
Raven held on to Hermione and cried again. Inside he was a huge emotional wreck. If this Snape had been so strong, why was he so weak? Why did everything he learned about his past devastate him so? He looked up at Albus. "Why am I so unable to control or accept what I was?"

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.

Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

Yes Kisses, you know a man and his needs. But she had the same needs. It was a chnace to connect and show him she can be with him as well. Thats she want's to be with him and it's now all Raven. Thanks for hanging in there :)

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
