Chapter 26
Chapter 26 of 50
gersknightladyHermione flees the wizarding world and comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedHermione stood before Raven and watched as he swallowed the potion that had taken them nearly six weeks to brew, and then she started the incantation.
Raven looked into her eyes the entire time. Then he seemed to blink and whispered, "Hermione, so it is done. I love you." Tears ran freely down his face.
Somehow the potion had reversed his mind already. In the seconds it had taken him to swallow it, he was back loving her with his eyes. She wished she could touch him and kiss him one last time, but she could not enter the circle. She mouthed back, "I love you, too." Tears fell down her face, obstructing her vision.
She had memorized the incantation because she had known she would be crying and that she would not be able to read it from the paper. In a few minutes, their lives might be changed forever. Suddenly, a light pierced the room, and the area around Raven began to glow. Light surrounded his body like fire, and he screamed with pain.
Raven felt as if the sun was shining right through him. Darkness streamed from him, and he let out an unholy scream, feeling as if his body was being ripped apart. There seemed to be a fire in his arm. He lifted it to look, and a fiery light broke out of the skin around the Dark Mark. The beams of light rose to the ceiling of the cavern.
It was so bright, Hermione had to cover her eyes. When she peaked through a slit in her hands, she saw the light flare and then vanish. Raven fell to his knees. After he remained silent and close-eyed for a few moments, she ran to him and threw her arms around him. "Raven, Raven! Are you all right?" She covered his face with kisses, and then she kissed his mouth gently.
Suddenly, she felt his body stiffen, and she opened her eyes and looked into his eyes. He backed off a few inches and looked at her in confusion.
"Granger? What the bloody hell are you doing?" He pushed her back. "What's happening?"
He seemed to take in his surroundings and then looked back at her. "How did you end up helping me?"
Hermione felt her heart go cold; what she had feared for weeks became reality. She asked, "Professor Snape?"
"Of course," he answered in a nasty tone.
She felt her vision fade, and then blackness overtook her.
Snape saw her turn white as a sheet and slip toward the floor. He caught her and struggled to his feet, looking around. In the back he found a bed, and he tossed her onto it. He turned to survey his surroundings. He found his wand where he'd always kept it in his sleeve, and he held it up defensively.
He could sense the emptiness of the caverns; no other living person was near. He turned back to look at the unconscious girl. She had matured, and there was a toughness about her. He reached up to touch his lips; she'd been kissing him quite intimately. How had that happened? The touch had not been that unpleasant. Suddenly, he grabbed at his sleeve and pulled it up to see the Dark Mark. He gasped and had to sit on the edge of the bed. It was gone, leaving his arm an unblemished white. He was free; he no longer had the Dark Mark. That meant Voldemort was gone. Though it appeared his fears had been realized and he'd lost his memories, somehow he had been restored. He looked back at Miss Granger. He couldn't fathom how she had come to be the person who had helped restore him. He thought the girl and her friends hated him. What had happened? Only questions remained.
Snape cringed at the thought of having to endure an explanation from her. The story could be quite long, and he would be subject to her emotions and quite possibly her pain.
He checked her with his wand and found her in shock; but she would recover. He thought he'd better look around and see what was available to him. There might be potions around he would need to help her wake up.
He looked around the bed and saw a book on the table nearby. It had a cover with his name on it. It was odd because the handwriting was his, but he could not remember having seen this journal before.
He opened it to the first page and read, "Severus, I am Raven. I am who you have become."
Snape closed the book. He wasn't sure he would be able to deal with what had happened. His eyes shifted to Hermione. Her eyes were now open, and tears were running down her cheeks. She tuned away from him.
"Miss Granger, are you all right?" he asked. He wasn't really sure he cared or really wanted to know, but he knew how to be sociable when the need rose. And it was obvious that she must have been a great help to him. He was honestly surprised not to see Potter or Weasley there with them. What had happened to them?
"Miss Granger, are you OK?" he asked again, not having gotten any response. "Granger, answer me!" he demanded, using his teacher's voice.
"No," she whispered.
"You are in shock. Are you in any physical pain?"
She couldn't speak; she could only shake her head. Her whole life was suddenly empty and frightening. Everything she'd had with Raven in the last months was gone. She only hoped that in time the memories she had made with Raven would resurface.
Severus looked around the massive cave room and noted all the treasures. He saw the books, and he felt a huge desire to start reading them. He'd loved books as a child and throughout his adult life. Books were one thing he and his mother shared that his father had no part in, being illiterate.
Strange, he thought, he hadn't thought of his mother in years. Why were thoughts of her so fresh? He could see her clearly in his mind.
He came back close to the bed, and Miss Granger was sitting on the edge of it. "Better?" he asked.
She nodded.
"You have obviously been of help in returning my memories. How long has it been since the war?" he asked curiously.
"Six... six and half months," she said flatly.
"SIX MONTHS! Bloody hell, girl!" he yelled. "Where have I been?" He came close to peer in her face and was suddenly enveloped by her arms.
"Raven, I know you're in there. Please remember I love you. Please remember!" Hermione cried. Her face pressed against his waist.
"Miss Granger! UN-HAND ME!" he growled, struggling to disengage her arms from around him. But he found the strong hug somehow reassuring nevertheless. Part of him was familiar with her touch. He loathed feeling her release him, but she heeded his voice and let go. She got up and ran to the far end of the cavern and huddled in a ball against the wall.
He stood looking at her, feeling he should go to her. But he was Severus Snape, and Severus Snape did not coddle emotional females.
He finally went and stood her up, shaking her to get her attention. "Miss Granger, you must not succumb to this emotionalism. I need answers, and you are the only one who can give them. How did you get in here? How do we get out?" He hadn't seen any doors.
Hermione stood for a while just watching him. He was pacing the cave like a trapped lion, growling and strutting here and there. He was as arrogant and harsh as he'd been when he'd taught her at Hogwarts. Her heart ached for Raven. His gentle, kind, loving, soul was trapped inside the man demanding answers from her.
She dried her tears with the back of her hand. "We came through the wall, but I can only get through if you are holding me inside the circle of your arm."
Snape nodded, taking her at her word. "Let's get out of here. I take it you got to my cave before coming here."
"Yes, sir," she said.
"Let's go there then. This is no place for you to be."
"I've been here with Raven for six and a half weeks. The potion that brought back your memories took a great deal of work. The spell took a lot of practice."
He looked around again. "You've been here for more than six weeks?" He saw the journal again at the bedside and then realized there was only one bed.
Hermione had returned Raven's bed to its original form...a lounge chair.
"You and... Raven... have been sleeping together?" His eyebrows had risen in surprise.
"Yes," she said, suddenly embarrassed.
"You and I... ?" he asked, not finishing the sentence.
She took a deep breath and stood straighter. "Yes."
"You're a child! A student! What kind of man was he? Why would you want to?"
"We became friends, very good friends at a time when we both needed someone desperately. We grew to respect and love each other very much."
"Love." He said the word as if it where a nasty thing. "Love only kills you. Now we need to leave here."
Hermione went to the bedside table and took the journal. "Raven spent a lot of time writing in this book so you would know what you've been doing all this time. I doubt you will like a lot of what you read, but everything in it happened...everything." She held it up to him and stood waiting for him to take it.
He stood looking at it as if it were a vile bug. Then he reached out and took the book.
She stepped closer and reached up to touch his cheek. Surprised, he drew back, but she came forward and caressed his cheek with her fingers. "Severus Snape, you have the ability to love and be loved. The part of you that was Raven learned that with me. I am no longer your student. Do not dismiss me as a child. I am a woman...a woman you made me. I love you with all my heart."
"Love me!" he spat. "You love a ghost, someone I was, someone who's dead."
"Do not dismiss me like that," she demanded. "Raven is part of you. I am here for you...not just because you were Raven but because you are a man who has garnered great respect in our world. You gave so much to protect Ron, Harry, and me."
"Where are the ungrateful brats? Why haven't they come here to help you?" His voice was condescending.
"When the war was over, Ron was dead. Harry is lying in a hospital, catatonic, the victim of a spell Voldemort placed on him moments before Harry's curse killed him. You can help me with the spells in this book Raven and I found. You are the Potions master and a great wizard. I do not understand the instructions in the book that holds the key to the spells that might help Harry."
"Now, the truth is told," he said, stepping back from her. "You kissed up to this Raven so you could convince me to help Potter. Always Potter. He has been a thorn in my side for my entire adult life. The agonies I have gone through for that boy. You have no idea. What did I get from him but hatred and disrespect?"
Hermione slapped him. "I gave up the love of my life for you. Yes, I did it so you could save Harry, and that's a payment of sorts, but mostly I did it because it was the right thing to do. Raven doesn't know Harry. He never met him, but he gave our life up to help Harry because that was what you had devoted your life to. He respected you enough to give you back your life. The least you can do is read his journal and honor who he was by saving Harry."
Snape stood looking down at her. "Are you done?" he asked with a sneer. This girl certainly was a spitfire.
"For now."
"Then let's go. I can't stay here right now. I need my own things. I need to reconnect with my life." He did not tell her that this place scared him.
"Collect what you want to take with you, and bring the Potion book you mentioned."
Hermione quickly collected her things and joined him again. She took one wistful look back at the bed they had shared.
"Miss Granger, I am not a patient man. Lets'go!" he demanded.
Hermione showed him the wall they had passed through, and he found that his hand passed into the wall easily. He reached out his hand to her.
"You won't let go?" she asked fearfully. "Raven didn't know the first time, and I got trapped for a few moments. I thought I was going to die surrounded by that rock." She drew back. "Don't let go of me!"
Severus saw the naked fear in her eyes, and he felt the need to reassure her.
"I will not let go, Hermione."
Hermione could see the truth in his eyes. For a moment she felt as if she was looking into Raven's eyes, and he reached out and drew her against him into the circle of his arm.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

I'm having a wonderful time reading this story. I should go to bed or I will regret it. My health requires I get enough rest or I have flare ups. At least I can go to sleep with singing heart now.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

Yes Kisses, you know a man and his needs. But she had the same needs. It was a chnace to connect and show him she can be with him as well. Thats she want's to be with him and it's now all Raven. Thanks for hanging in there :)

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
