Chapter 23
Chapter 23 of 50
gersknightladyHermione flees the wizarding world and comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedRaven let Hermione slip from his fingers, nearly dropping her onto the cave floor. He fired off a bolt of energy at Voldemort. It passed right through him as if he were a specter.
"Severus," it continued like a recording not even aware of the spell that had passed through it, "you always were resourceful. No other wizard could trip this spell. If you are here, then by some amazing miracle, you have beaten my best and me. I can only assume Potter has done me in. I trusted you as I've never trusted anyone, and I didn't trust anyone. I knew you'd betray me."
Raven, realizing it was some sort of memory, bent to pat Hermione on the face.
"Hermione, come on, wake up. It's only a faded memory."
Hermione opened her eyes and sat up, and he helped her to her feet. They stood arm in arm and watched the memory play out.
"Betrayed by the little, forgotten, poor boy who was tormented by his peers. Murdered by a child. So much power in the Dark Arts...that's what has been my end, simple love. Love is something that I never had. Love is a weak emotion. There is so much power in the Dark Arts. You understood the power of knowledge. Your love of Lily was your undoing. Her sacrifice for Harry is what banished me that night. And you, Severus, who could love a murderer of their own father? My only consolation is that you are in the same forgotten place that I am. Do not assume that it will be easy to find what you're looking for because you passed through the wall, but it is here. At one time in your life, you truly thought I was your master. Love has made you weak and pathetic. Your associates are weak. You cannot remember who you are, and they do not have your skills. You would do well to leave here and not come back... Beware."
The image wavered and began to fade. Then Voldemort was gone.
"He's wrong, Raven. You are loved, and in that respect so is Severus Snape," she said. "There will be deadly traps in this place. We have the advantage, and we can watch each other's back."
They stood their ground for some time and lit the huge room with their wands. Seeing torches along the wall, they lit those magically. This was the room Severus had seen when he was younger. This was Voldemort's lair. Here in this room, if they were careful and cunning enough, they would find the hidden parchment with Voldemort's and Snape's handprints. Once the blood oath was destroyed, they could then look for the spells to recover Severus' memories and possibly Harry's as well. Hermione hoped it was all the same magic and that they might even restore Neville's parents to him.
Hermione finally agreed that they could cautiously move a little, but they stayed together and didn't touch anything. She used her wand to try to detect wards placed on objects. This place had so much in it. There was more wealth than any person alive had seen: treasures, statues of antiquity, paintings, and artifacts. There were books long forgotten and some Hermione had only read about...Dark Arts books that even she might admit needed to be destroyed. The jewel-encrusted chests probably contained gold and jewels. As they looked around, they realized that Severus' treasure was tiny compared to this one.
Hermione said, "When we are done with this place, we can turn it over to the Aurors. They will finish breaking any curses and can catalog this for museums, libraries, or wherever else it needs to go. Personally, I'd like to see some of the families damaged by Voldemort or his minions compensated monetarily."
"Always wanting to help," Raven said softly, placing a kiss at her temple. "It's one of the reasons I love you."
"Do you think we should call for help?" He said it in a way that let Hermione know it was the last thing he wanted. "I could not bear it if you suffered anymore injuries."
She tried to joke with him. "Yeah, why am I doing most of the bleeding around here?" But she immediately regretted it when she saw the grimace on his face. "I'm sorry, Raven. I was trying to be humorous. That image of Voldemort scared the hell out of me. Besides, you obviously duck faster than I do. These injuries could have just as easily happened to you. The pain is fading and the bezoar is finally taking effect. I'm much better now."
They moved a bit further into the room. Raven kept an eye on the floor, and Hermione watched the room for spells. They could still feel the dark magic emanating from this place.
Hermione saw something coming toward her out of the corner of her eye and sent up a shield. It was some sort of insect the size of a clenched hand. The thing had a deadly stinger on it. Its wings were gold-colored, and it had a red body. It buzzed around tearing holes in the shield, and she kept putting more up to push it back.
Raven yelled, "Incendio," and it caught the thing and burned it up. The ashes fell to the ground.
They took another step and the floor began to melt like quicksand, and Raven sunk waist deep. Hermione sent a special levitation spell combined with a shield to protect Raven from the elements around him. They'd found the spell in Snape's journal. She clambered up on a box close by. Snakes of all shapes and colors poured from a hole in the wall. Hermione froze some snakes. Raven incinerated some. They trapped others and vanished more of them. They kept coming. In the end, Hermione managed a seal spell on the hole, and Raven burned the rest of them up. They both sat atop the box panting, coughing from the smoke. Unwilling to move until they recovered some strength, Hermione pulled out a kind of baked protein bar that Dobby had brought, some water, and another Pepperup Potion.
They stayed back to back so they could watch the room around them. About an hour after entering the room, it suddenly went dark, and the torches went out. There was a skittering sound, and Hermione felt a dread she hadn't before. "Lumos Maxima," she cried out. They were surround by huge beetles with red and black shells, black beady eyes, and three-inch-long pinchers. Before they could react, one climbed the box and took a slice from Raven's leg. He jumped up and shook the thing away, and more swarmed up the box, several taking slices from his hand and face. He screamed in pain.
Hermione pulled the broom out, and they jumped on and flew up higher into the top of the cave. The entire cave floor was filled with beetles. Hermione used a spell that crushed them. Raven knocked them off of anything higher than floor level, and Hermione continued to crush them.
They cleared the floor with a vanishing spell, relit the torches, and finally settled back to the floor of the cave.
"They were creepy but not exactly lethal or hard to get rid of." She had no sooner said that when Raven paled and fell over.
"Raven!" she cried out. A clear fluid erupted from the wounds on his leg, arm, and face, and it poured over him like water. But when Hermione reached out, she realized it was hard like Lucite or glass. Seconds later, when Raven was totally encased, she touched him and felt hardness and coldness. He'd been encased in a crystalline substance, smooth as ice. She tried several reversals and then sat down and cried.
********
Raven felt cold but still alive. He tried to talk, tried to tell Hermione that he wasn't dead, but he was unable to move. He realized with horror that this could very well be a living death. He could hear Hermione crying. He wanted to wrap his arms around her. He wanted to stop her pain, but he was forced to listen and was unable to even let her know he was there. He struggled against his bonds and nothing changed. He tried wandless magic, but nothing happened.
She finally lay over him, looking down into his face through the crystal casing. Without Raven, she was trapped in here. She would not be able to get through the wall without his touch. She called out, "Dobby, I need help." This time he did not come. She couldn't get out, and no one could get in. She tried a Portkey, but it just sat there in her hand.
He appeared to be asleep, but she knew with Voldemort's horrible sense of humor that in all likeliness Raven was still alive, still hearing her cry.
"Raven! If you can hear me, I will get you out."
"I hear you, Hermione," he thought.
"Raven!" She looked for something to crack the glass casing, and she found a heavy candelabra. She hit the casing as hard as she could, over and over, until the shock of the impact made her feel like the bones of her arm might shatter. Tears were streaming down her face. She threw herself on him. "Oh God, please help me."
Simultaneously they said, "I will love you forever."
Raven could feel his heart pounding against his ribs. He felt as if his heart would break in two. He felt tears blurring his eyes, and they seeped out the sides of his eyes and ran down his cheeks.
At the same moment, Hermione's tears slipped down over the sides of the casing. The two tears ran opposite each other, and the casing cracked. Hermione's eyes flew open, and she stared at the crack. When she saw Raven's eyelids flutter, her tears turned to tears of joy. As they splashed onto the casing, it continued to crack and then shattered. The sound was like twinkling crystal. Suddenly, Hermione felt pain as the tiny pieces embedded in her face and arms.
"Raven, don't move," she screamed.
"Why?" he asked.
"The glass will cut you to ribbons. Hold as still as you can."
With care, she inched her arm up, and her wand slid into her hand. She used it to levitate herself into the air and cautioned him to keep his eyes closed. As she hovered, the tiny shards fell from her like the twinkling of wind chimes. She used a wind spell to blow the shards away. It didn't stop the glass from cutting them, but it kept a lot of it from embedding itself into their flesh.
Unable to grab him and hold him, she carefully levitated him to a standing position and used the wind to take more of the glass away. She lowered herself to stand before him and withdrew her bag from around her neck. She then took out tweezers and carefully removed the glass imbedded in Raven's face. Using her own breath, she blew shards from his eyelids and hair. Having been above him, she had little on her hair, but her hands were cut, and the blood seeped down her wrists.
In turn, Raven carefully removed the shards he could see from Hermione. Then he used a little of the dittany they had brought with them. The cuts sealed shut, and the bleeding stopped.
After some time, they decided they could finally hug, and Raven gathered her gently into his arms. Their kisses were gentle, and more tears of relief mingled on their faces.
"I was so scared, Raven."
"You were here; you were next to me. You didn't leave me. It kept me sane."
She laughed a bit hysterically. "I'm glad you're free; but ironically, I couldn't have gone anywhere without you. I'm stuck in here. And if I could have gotten help, you would have gone with me regardless."
She kissed him deeply, hungry for his body and confirmation she wasn't dreaming. She felt him laugh with relief as he kissed her back.
"I don't know about you, but I need the loo and some food and water."
She smiled and caressed his face. "OK, but if we deem this place finally safe, you're gonna know how much I want you."
"I'll look forward to that," he said. As he stood up and turned away, a grimace flashed across his face. He knew very well that "he" might not leave this place. Snape might be the one to walk out with Hermione. He felt jealous of himself.
They moved toward one end of the room and discovered a loo of sorts...a side room with a chamber pot. It seemed to have its own vanishing spell. Once finished there, Hermione produced some more food and water, and they ate sitting by the wall.
"What do you suppose broke that spell?" Hermione asked.
"Voldemort mentioned it himself: love. He could never understand it. He never, in a million years, thought I would come here with someone I loved. Your tears broke the spell."
"It was sort of like Sleeping Beauty," she mused.
"Well, I could argue about the beauty part," he said with a snort.
Hermione smiled. "I love you so much."
He kissed her again, letting his cheek remain against hers and feeling her soft skin against his. "I love you."
From somewhere in the room, they heard a sliding stone. Instantly, they were on their feet, wands at the ready. Hermione, having looked around the room before, started forward to see what had changed. A door to a hidden chamber had opened across the room.
Slowly and cautiously, they went toward the open door. At the last moment, they reached their hands out and clasped them together. If something hit them, they wanted to be together. A wall of green light formed at the door, and they threw a few curses at it. Nothing happened. It hit them with quite a powerful wind, but it seemed to lose its power against their joint stand. Shelves appeared before them, and they saw a book and a rolled parchment. Many vials of potions and a few huge jewels that Hermione was certain where enchanted stones lay on the shelves.
Hermione grabbed the parchment and unrolled it. She could feel Raven shaking next to her. There, on the parchment, were two bloody handprints.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
LOL yes, he has become quite considerate. Love has opened up his world.

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
