Chapter 37
Chapter 37 of 50
gersknightladyHaving fled the Wizarding World Hermione comes face to face with her past.
ReviewedHermione laughed when she woke the next morning and found Grendel lying between them on the large bed. Severus had needed his help to regain as much strength as possible so he would be able to perform the spell again that night. It was Saturday, so they decided to stay at the cave for the morning. They ate breakfast and then played ball with Grendel. For all his scary rows of teeth, he was gentle with the pigskin ball. He was a big baby at heart and romped and chased after the ball like a small pup. Hermione laughed at his antics. It made her feel good to laugh and relax for a bit. Just seeing Severus play made her heart light, and she was amazed that the child Raven had become had always been a facet of Severus Snape that he'd kept secret.
Severus wasn't much different from Raven after all. But what was it that was keeping Severus from remembering his life as Raven?
Around three o'clock, they returned to Hogwarts to shower and dress for the evening. Severus practiced the spell a bit and tried to concentrate on the feelings that had allowed him to continue the night before. He did not want to falter tonight. His inability to produce the spell in a continuous manner may have cost Frank Longbottom months of physical therapy and potions to restore his left side. He knew that no one blamed him, but he did not like imperfection. Neville had sent an owl to Severus, thanking him for all he had done. He let Severus know that he was delighted to actually have his parents healthy and talking. He had assured Severus that he did not hold him responsible for his father's infirmities and that the healers were very certain that his father would be fully recovered in a few months. Severus was grateful for the letter, but he hoped to do better tonight.
Hermione had sent an owl to Ginny and asked that she bring her family to St. Mungo's. Severus had wanted to do the spell without them there, but he'd understood. Potter would want Ginny there when he woke up. However, Severus had asked that Ginny wait outside until called.
When they arrived at the hospital, the Weasleys were already there. They seemed happy to see Severus but did not try to touch him...except Arthur, who came to shake his hand.
"Severus, it's good to have you back. Thank you for agreeing to help Harry. The boy deserves a life," Arthur said.
Ginny had gone to Hermione and stood in her arms, trembling with excitement and fear.
Severus nodded to Arthur. "There is no guarantee this will work. There are things I need to feelto make this a success, and I do not know if I have it in me."
"If this fails, Severus, then you will try again when you have worked through the feelings. You have always done your best for the Order and Harry. You will do all that you can for him," Arthur encouraged the reluctant wizard.
Hermione gently detached Ginny and pushed her into her mother's arms. "Please, wait out here as quietly as possible. I will call you if we are successful." She had not mentioned Severus' success with the Longbottoms. She knew that Severus still had some issues with Harry.
Severus turned away from the Weasleys' hopeful faces. He could not quell the fear in his heart that he was not up to this task tonight. He was afraid that the ease of Frank and Alice's return would not happen this time. Bellatrix had been an inferior witch when compared with Voldemort's phenomenal powers. The darkness around Harry's mind seemed thick, inky, and impenetrable.
Alishus was in the room with Harry when they entered. He nodded to them but did not speak. Then he stepped back and out of the room, leaving only Miriam Strout in attendance.
That astonished Severus; the man was giving him more privacy this time. Everyone knew about his relationship with Harry. It had come out in the hearing that had occurred after his disappearance and assumed death. To clear his name, all of his past and Harry's past had been revealed from the memories Harry had left in the Pensieve in Dumbledore's office, and he presumed Dumbledore's portrait had concurred that the memories were not false.
Hermione went to stand at the side of Harry's bed near his head, and Severus took his place at the foot. Miriam took the other side. Severus stood and stared into the young man's face for a long time. He was trying to feel what he needed to feel. There was so much bad blood between them. There was, in contrast, so much feeling between Lily and him. His feelings of love were compounded by his betrayal that had cost her life. He looked at Hermione for encouragement and found that golden smile that always made his heart soar. He took a deep breath and nodded to Healer Strout. She administered the potion.
Severus started to sing. His voice was deep, almost husky, and the resonance wavered. He took a deep breath and started again. He sang with rich tones, and the colors started to form. They wrapped themselves around Harry. The boy's eyes opened, and Severus was staring into Lily's eyes. It shocked him so much that he lost his train of thought, and the colors and lights crumbled and faded. Harry's body jerked and then seized up. His eyes closed, and then he lay still. Hermione looked at Severus in horror and then anxiously watched Healer Strout make a diagnosis.
"He's okay," she finally said. "His body shows some shock, and he had a mild seizure, but he's slipped back into the full curse and is the same as he was before. What happened, Severus?" Her voice was curious but kind.
Severus had stood frozen in horror, and then he broke away and ran out into the hall. Pushing past the Weasleys, he vanished down the hall. Hermione, having run to the door, stood for a moment staring after him, and then all the voices of the family accosted her.
"What happened?"
"Why did he leave?"
"Will Harry stay this way?"
"Hermione?"
Hermione pushed past them. "I need to find him. Please let me go. I will find out what happened. I promise I will make sure he tries again. Please keep this to yourselves," she begged them and ran down the hall to the stairs and out of the building. But there was only silence there; Severus was gone. She stood on the empty street, tears streaking down her face. He'd left her behind. Where had he gone? What had happened?
She had been excited when Harry's eyes had opened, and then the music had stopped. Somehow Severus had shut down and been distracted. She went over what had happened again in her mind. He stopped singing when Harry opened his eyes. Suddenly, she thought of all the times over the years that she'd heard people telling Harry that he had his mother's eyes. She groaned. Oh Merlin, will he ever get her out of his heart, and will he ever forgive himself for what happened all those years ago?
She Apparated to Hogwarts, feeling it was best to start there. She gathered a few things from her room that she felt might help him and started her search.
His quarters were empty, so she went to Spinner's End and found it dark and empty. She had never tried to Apparate the distance to his lair, so she went to Minerva and asked for her help. Minerva sent for Dobby, and he took her to the lair. But Grendel was there alone, and Hermione really began to fear for him. Where else would he go? What state of mind was he in?
Then she had it: Lily. He would have gone to Lily in Godric's Hollow. She'd been there before and knew she could get there alone. She sent Dobby back to tell Minerva where she was going, and then she Apparated. Hermione found herself on a dark street about a block from the cemetery. It was a dark, foreboding night, and she used the tip of her wand to send a soft warm light before her.
She was not crazy about traipsing through a dark cemetery alone at night and only prayed that Severus would be there and not send her away. She made her way through the woods to the kissing gate. It was slightly open, and it gave her courage that Severus had come before her. Her feet took her in the familiar direction of the grave, past the now dark church. The grave stones stood out, throwing sharp shadows everywhere. As she neared Harry's parents' grave, she saw a dark form lying before it. The white marble was silhouetting his form in the dark surroundings.
"Severus?" she called softly.
The form moved, and now she could see him.
"Hermione, please leave me." His voice was ragged with emotion and tears.
She continued on, determined to comfort him. She took him in her arms, and he slumped down, drawing her to the ground with him. He cried heart-wrenchingly painful cries that were ripped from his soul and tore at her heart so that she cried with him.
"I will never leave you, Severus. Do you hear me? I will never leave you, so never send me away because I will not go!"
Severus finally believed her. She would never leave him. He clung to her, aware that he was probably bruising her arms and body with the strength of his hold, but he could not stop the waves of painful cries that kept erupting from his mouth.
"Cry, Severus. Let go of the pain and forgive yourself for the mistakes of your past."
"My mistakes cost the lives of my best friend and the man she loved dearly. It is not some simple mistake, Hermione. She is gone, and she can never forgive me. Please get me out of here. Take me to Grendel, please. I cannot stand this pain," he cried.
She helped him stand, and they Apparated. But when Severus opened his eyes, he found himself outside Spinner's End. "What are we doing here?" he demanded. "I need Grendel! Please, Hermione, take me to Grendel."
"Severus, you need to face your pain, not have it taken away. Grendel will only mask this pain again. This pain must be dealt with," she said as she helped him through the door and into the house. They went straight up to the bedroom, and Hermione helped him change into a long nightshirt and crawl under the bedcovers. She was going to let him sleep alone. But he would not let go of her hand, so she crawled into the bed beside him. He spooned himself against her, and they both slept from emotional exhaustion.
Severus woke first and found Hermione's face inches from his; she must have turned toward him during the night. He felt heavy and hungover from all the emotional exertion. His face felt crusted with spent tears, and he could see the streaks of dried tears on her face as well. This woman was a miracle in his life, and her love had saved him over and over again. Her willingness to love him despite his past and his own self-destructive nature made him feel warm.
She was stirring now, and her eyes opened. When she saw him watching her, she smiled that glorious smile that warmed him more than the sun and brought life to his heart.
He leaned forward and kissed her deeply. She pressed herself against him, and he held her close. "Thank you for finding me," he said softly.
"You're welcome," she said, kissing him back.
"Will Harry be alright?" He couldn't remember much of what had happened after Harry's eyes had opened.
"Yes, he's the same as before the spell. The potion doesn't seem to have much effect without the spell. You can try again."
Severus stiffened and pulled away, getting out of the bed. "I'm not capable of doing the spell for him. It will have to be someone else."
Hermione crawled out after him and made him look at her. "It can't be anyone but you, Severus. You know the spell and what it entails. You have to be the one to bring him back. You can do this, Severus. I have faith in you and your abilities," she told him.
"No, I can't do it. I am too fragmented, and I have no anchor for my own life. How can I hope to find the anchor to bring Harry back?" he said.
Hermione went to retrieve the magic bag she had placed on the bedside table. She opened it and pulled out several items. She was hurt that he didn't see her as an anchor in his life, but she did not point that out to him. She knew that would help no one.
"Severus, it's time you faced your past. You need to see the memories Raven and I left you, and you need to see the memories your mother left you. I also have the diary here. This is the only way you will be able to move forward in your life with me. You need to let go of the past," she beseeched him.
Severus stared at the items in her hand with revulsion, but in his heart he knew it was time. He nodded, reaching out to take the diary from her hand.
Thank you for the many wonderful comments and reviews. I appreciate them so much.
I want to thank my beta, Lisa. She brings order to my work. I am horrible at grammar and punctuation. beaweasley2, thank you for your patience and help with the chapters. You have helped me so much. I also want to thank Becky, who finds tiny mistakes and is such a support to me.

I noticed a couple of small things: you used aide when it should be aid, and timber when it should be timbre.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I appreciate the heads-up but I could not find Timber/timbre. I thought it would be where he sings Harry to live and yet it's not there. I re-read the chapter twice and it didn't jump out a me.so much for your help.Thank
It probably doesn't matter at this time, but I've noticed a lot of errors: spelling and grammar. Also, there were Indians in Romania?I am enjoying your story however.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
Well, if there are a lot of errors they have slipped by the TPP ladies. If you want to send them to me I can run them by them and see if they can be fixed. The chapters go through quite a stringent process. I'm glad you are enjoying the story.

Is he so thoughtful because he is magical or because he is Severus Snape? I can't even get my husband to initiate ad take me on a date and I've been married 33 years. Our last date was to go see the last Deathly Hallows and I planned that one. He is a loving stick in the mud.

I'm not sure. I think once Severus Snape loves and is loved back. I think the whole world would open for him.Well at least hes loving. It could be worse :)

It looks like Grendal is rejuivinated by children. That's a wonderful idea. I hurt so bad tonight I can hardly think. I wish I had a pet like him. My feet feel like they have been held in burning coals and then put in clamps. I can't sleep and I'm dreading work, tomorrow. I have peripheral neuropathy from unknown causes. Some days are worse than others.

I'm sorry you are in pain. Its been a week or so since you wrote this. I hope your health has improved. I went on a nice vacation and am now back. I hope things are better now. Im glad you enjoyed the chapter.

A very Happy Chritstmas. Severus is 10 times more thoughtful than most guys. He bought her a wedding dress, how cute.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)

The cauldron ring was a brilliant idea! It is very original. And, I am so glad Xenophilius is there! I really like him and am so glad Luna gets to have her dad. I'm glad to see Moody still alive too. Too bad for the Weaselys Fred isn't here. How did you decide who to keep alive and who to leave passed away? I have no criticism on the matter, just observing and wondering about the process of deciding who to bring back into the story. Great chapter!

Not sure how I chose who lived and who died. I didn't like Freds death anymore than the others but I had to leave some war casulties and I guess he was one of the first so I left it that way. I really didn't think it out much.Thank you I'm glad you liked it.

Seeing Severus tonight at the ball should help Ginny understand better what Hermione sees in Severus. But she is a girl and it is normal for her not to be attracted to men old enough to be her father. I, on the other hand, have always been attracted to older men. I've been inordinately "boy/man crazy" since I was literally 5 years old. LOL. My first crush was Davey Jones from the Monkeys. Allowing Harry to see the memory of his mother and Harry's mother is extremely generous. That was very very personal. I wonder how Severus will react seeing it a second time? It changed him and gave him back his memories of Raven. He was extremely emotional afterwards. I wonder if he will be able to be OK when seeing it with Harry. I understand that he and Hermione share way more with one another than anyone else does because of Severus' special needs to see Hermione's mind and Hermione seeing his pensive memories. They are comfortable with it now, but most people would feel more like Ginny does about it. I know Severus probably wants Harry to see how much he was loved as a baby. However, Harry will also be hearing his mom say she let Severus down. He will surely have conflicting feelings about that. It won't be easy for either of them to see. I'm sure Severus wants to let Harry know that he can consider him a godfather. I totally trust Harry, but I've learned in life that you can't trust very many people with too much personal information. They are only human and are bound to veiw that information from a position of thier own self interest. They are bound to let someone down even if they are sorry later. But most of the time they aren't sorry because don't even realize how hurtful they were or don't care. Severus will need to find a happy medium regarding who he trusts his most tender feelings with. Changing the subject, I wonder what Minerva thinks about Hermione and Severus snogging in front of all the students.

I adored the Monkees when I was a kid. I got to see them last year in Bakersfield on their last tour together. Davey was so full of energy and danced all over the stage. He was a joy to see again.Thats was a huge step for Severus, sharing the memory. True people who haven't shared someoes thoughts might think it an invasion. Ginny doesn't know the love and trust they have developed for eachother.Maybe she would think "its about time" LOL... But then shes a propper o'l biddy. (said very fondly) :) I honestly don'tremember how I wrote it.

Great chapter!!! Everyone is coming along quite well. I love happy stories. I don't know why sad stories get so much credit. Entertainment should take one away from the pain of real life in my opinion. I think that is why many of us got hooked on Harry Potter initially when it was still fun and magic was amazing, even though we were adults. Then it went down hill and I only kept reading because I cared about the characters and felt the need to see how she resolved so much conflict, pain and betrayal. I kept hoping for things to improve, but they only got worse. I hated the last book. I hated the ending too. She killed too many people she didn't need to kill. And especially if she had to kill Severus she did it in such an un-Snapish way. Severus Snape would have been prepared for Nagini. She'd made him too smart to die that way. She also made Hermione too intelligent to be able to stay with Ron forever. She would have grown past him, though she would always love him. They don't make a believable adult couple. Your story is 100 times better. Thank you for not letting Doby be dead. That was just too much death for me. I'm sorry Ron has to be dead, but I understand it better than killing Severus and leaving him with such an unresolved tragedy of a life. I wonder if, in her mind, he met Dumbledore on the other side the way Harry did. I know publishers make you change a story a lot. At least the result left a lot of us the drive and strong need to set Severus Snape's story right. We SS fans felt the need to make more sense of his death. I truly didn't see it coming until the last story. I kept waiting for her to reveal his truth, and I thought she would give him some closure, some compensation for his suffering. Although she showed us why he protected Harry and that he wasn't evil, which were huge questions; she left him dead in a stupid way and with only pain, pain and more pain taken to the grave. Her story left me completely unsatisfied.

Your emotia cons are so entertaining LOL. I was cringing about the mob but see it's not directed at me wheew.I agree with you the cannon books leave a lot to be desired. Why did Harry have to lose every one and everything that he loved. Even his owl. Its a wonder Ginny and Hagrid surived.I also agree with you one the HG?RW pairing. It has never worked for me. I hated having them together at the end. They were polar opposites and would have never stayed together.I think allof us who wrote HG/SS fic found the books lacking. That's why we write... we need to give him a better ending.

Quite beautiful. I'm glad everyone got to feel Severus' song of love. This will do much to make everyone feel closer to Severus. I hope Harry can love him too. I know I said that in the last review. I know Harry is a good and kind boy with a lot of love, so I'm sure he will be able to. What about the elder wand? Breaking the edler wand was a big deal regarding Harry. I wonder if you include this in your story some how so we know he did break it, since he didn't have a chance to in this version of how he killed Voldemort. It's OK if you didn't, though.
Response from gersknightlady (Author of Raven)
I'm not sure when I wrote this how aware I was of the elder wand. I don't think it's included in this story at all. The fnal moview came after, sure I'd read the books but since it was such a different take on the end it wasn't included.

I'm glad he found out Lily didn't hate him. It must have been terrible to watch the grief of his mother and Lily at losing him to the Dark Lord. But he must have forgiven them so that he was able to remember Raven's life and his love for Hermione. Hermione will be fine. Now he will be able to love Harry like a godson. I hope Harry can love him back.

The idea of giving Raven's memories back to Severus is brilliant! I'm really glad he mom left him the memory necklace. I wonder how she did it without her wand. Maybe after Severus' dad was gone she got another one. It must be hard for Hermione to have not taken him back to the cave. He was very pitiful. I wonder if he is blocking Raven's memories or if it is a result of the curse. This last memory of his mom after he killed his dad was good for him. Now maybe he can forgive her. The more he forgives the other people who loved him but weren't perfect, the more he will be able to forgive himself.

Thank you, I'm glad you found some things to like in this chapter. Maybe she really did have some wandless magic or she did get another one (good observation that I missed).opps I got ahead of my self. I'm supposed to be in the teen chapters.

I admit I was surprised that Severus didn't finish. However, this is great story telling. It will turn out well, I think. I hope the Weasely's keep quiet. Maybe only Aurthur and Ginny should be there until Severus finishes the spell. It would be less pressure, I think. Maybe Hermione needs to give him permission to love his best friend's son. Acknowledge that he loved Lily and it's OK to keep the good memories. I understand his guilt, but Peter Pettigrew is the friend who really betrayed them to Voldemort. Severus was the one who had them hidden. When he told Voldemort the prophesy he didn't know it would be about Lily's son, did he? I can't remember. I think Lily has forgiven him. If she knew that her life and Jame's were given so that her son could defeat Voldemort, I think she would have been willing to make that sacrafice. She was fighting Voldemort too. If she hadn't died for Harry, Harry would not have been able to defeat the Dark Lord. She also helped defeat Voldemort by her sacrifice. I'm certain Severus has never looked at it that way.

I think it was a shock to him and it starled him enough to make him lose his concentration spoiling the spell. He will come back. No I don;t think he thought at first it would be Lily's son. I don;t think he would have told Voldy if he had known it. I think Lily has too. Your right she would have given her life for the cause. I never thought of it that way either and so we see they were more alike than we thought. Thanks so much for the thoughts and the review.

Great job! Just enough angst to make it exciting but not so much as to make it too stressful for a weary soul. I'm really enjoying this story.

I don't understand why they have decided not to make love at Hogwartz until after Harry is free. What am I missing? I'm really happy about his encounter with Neville. That's a healing for Neville too. His fear of Severus has been painful. He is such a good boy. He and Luna do really match. I'm so happy for them both. The Gypsy experience was a great chapter. Thanks.

Well hey I really don;t know why i amde that decision. Being un-Married and it being a school for children is probably the reason. Maybe they just need it to be more formal. Finish up what they set out to do and then see where they stood with eachother. Who knows This was written years ago lol.I'm glad you liked the Gypsies.

Kisses, kisses!!!! I didn't think he could keep away from her until Harry was fixed. It's all good. She needed it and he needed it now they will need eachother. I knows she made love to him even if he doesn't think he made love to her. If he was worried about her loving Ravan instead of him I think some of his worries can be laid to rest. It can only get better now. I feel it.

I suppose she can't ask him to forgive her can she? She doesn't know he stood outside the door, but she knows he kissed the daylights out of her. I think that before much time goes by she needs to sincerely apologize without being overly emotional, but say she respect his wishes if he wants to continue as if the kisses never happened. It seems like the adult thing to do. To ignore it would be immature.

Well I'm not sure what scene yur talking about but it will get worked out. She's alot younger and also insecure and some times her youth can get the better of her. She can be immature.

There are too many chapters left for this not to get better. Hermione needs to somehow show him that she didn't love Raven just to get Harry back. She needs to give him the memories she and Raven made. She also needs to give him the necklace. Some careful way she needs to let him know that she read his jounals and watched the memories with Raven and that she knew all those things about him but still fell in love with him. Maybe she should write him a letter and tell him, but promise never to bring it up again unless he does first. She can promise to just be a collegue and a friend no matter what he decides. And let him know she will always love him no matter what he does. Then just be there for him. I also wouldn't say a word about Harry unless he did. After he wakes Harry, he will see that she cares for him even after he does what she wants and that she isn't just using him. I bet he can't last until the end of the potion they have to prepare. Well, at least a little of the real him will break loose I think.

There is a lot of fear in the man and insecurities. He can't beleive someone can love him and he has to have his time to come to terms with what Raven and Hermione had. Give him some time. He want's someone tolove him for who he is and he just has to see she can be the one.

I thik I might have waited in the cave for a while in case he came back if I was her. If I was her I might wait at Spinner's End. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is where he went. But I guess that would be invading his personal space too much. I think I might send the memories there and leave them for him in plain sight. I believe he would look at them. I would also leave the necklace with the memories and the journal. If I ddin't hear from him in a couple of weeks I would check there then back at the cave. Now that she knows where it is, she can find it again.

Yes, she can. But she's afraid right now and waiting it out to see what will happen. I think she would act soon if nothing happens. He would only toss her out on her ear.... he needs time.

I'm sure he'll get over this.
