Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

What about Hermionie!!!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Herms has no idea just how utterly miserable Snape's life is. Whether she'll figure it out...I haven't decided yet.
Loving your interpretation of the events of Spinner's End...I don't normally like humourous stories much, but Snape's internal dialogue is one of the funniest I have ever read! I've often said that Snape had to be the busiest guy in OoTP too, with all the running he had to do during the MoM fiasco, but this really illustrated it! Thanks! :D~HR
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Glad you're enjoying it! did you catch him bitching earlier about how he's the main force keeping the war running smoothly for both sides? I was proud of that one.
Heeheehee...now he just has to survive Hermione, which could be worse than mares, stallions and moldie Voldie all rolled in one...LOVE the baby centaurs! I have a young colt and filly here, full brother and sister, and I can just see the baby centaurs capering about as they do! Filly is almost two and colt is almost one...~HR
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
LOL! I don't know much about horses, but kids are kids, regardless of species.
Uhhhhhhhhhohhhhhhhh...there were only four mares, originally...Snape better have his dragonskin boots on for this one, I think he's just wallowed into a really deep manure heap now...and poor guy, to have Voldemort laugh at him getting laid! See, and people wonder why I feel sorry for Snape in real life, can you believe it?Well, hopefully V keeps laughing and doesn't register a certain boss mare named Hermione...~HR
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Exactly. Good thing he was too busy checking out Nephele to keep an accurate count.
Whooooeee! LOVE the characterization with the centaur/a/s, but ohhhhhh myyyyy...if Hermione finds out what Snape's got up to...and what of the stallions? I'm almost afraid to read on, not knowing just exactly how deep he's dug himself into trouble this time...The whole centaur idea is *wonderful*, though, they're far underutilized in the fandom! Judging by my username, I'm sure it's obvious why I like it...~HR
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* I guess Snape can use that username now too...The Four Horse Man....
Awwww, damn! I wanted her to call his bluff! Course, I don't know what actually happens next till I see the next chapter, do I? So away I go! Accio Chapter 22!~HR
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, you know Severus--he's such a GENTLEMAN he'd find some way to wiggle out if she called his bluff. >p
Wow...some excellent insights that delve beyond the obvious involving Snape's Worst Memory. I really, really like your interpretation here, many things I have suspected myself but summed up neatly in a nutshell here.~HR
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!
Bwahahahahahaha! A brilliant comedic ending to a perfectly tense situation.
I have long since thought (in fact, since read one on July 16th - in point of fact I read chapter 1, chapter 2 and then chapter 2 again, , nd then 3-27, and then chapter 2 again . . . . he NEVER stated the task because *HE* *DIDN'T* *KNOW* *IT*. He found out *later*, because come chapter 27, Dumbledore himself knew what the task was - BUT HOW??? Snape must have told him, which means Snape found out, probably around the time of the argument Hagrid overheard in the Forest.)
*cough*
Why yes, I am a canon nazi, thank you for asking.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*gives the Canon Nazi Secret Handshake*
A lovely telling of a horrible situation.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! I like Snape/Dumbles moments... I think there's such an interesting potential--what kind of information did Dumbledore deliberately "plant" in Snape for Voldy to HEAR, as opposed to review under Legilimency? What a complex balance that could be, all these triple-reverse switchbacks of planting a lie, wanting it to look true, but not TOO true...a daunting game.
This chapter was an absolute hoot. I enjoyed it immensely - poor Severus! I admit, I wasn't too sure in the first couple of chapters; the idea of Hermione reading to him at bedtime seemed quite a stretch. But i'm certainly intrigued now, and look forward to more.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I get that a lot--try to remember that he agreed because he would do ANYTHING to help Harry learn Occlumency and get the heck out of his office.
You wicked woman, to put Ol' Severus through all these ordeals. The man must be exhausted by now. Let's hope Draco will never find out, what "sacrifices" Severus had to made for his safety. And what a relief you send Bella away (pffeww).Whatever your imagination brings, it's certainly surprising.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, Draco probably would be pretty upset if he heard that his mom did the deed with Uncle Sev. Particularly if a little brother or sister resulted... *eeeeeevul grin*
Response from arveyo (Reviewer)
Not already planning a new story, are you? With all these joyful encounters, that could mean quite a few offspring knocking on Daddy Severus' door one day.
After reading the other reviews, I wanted to mention that I didn't think it was too long, even if it was longer than other chapters. (Haven't I complained that previous chapters were too short?) I still say "well done!"
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*snicker* I forgot that. See, the old saying really is true--you can't please everybody so you just have to write what you like.
Amazing! I love the Whiz-bangs. (It sort of takes on a new meaning, where he put them.) Canon-nazis may complain about the liberties you took with the Vow, but I thought it was excellent. My favorite LOL line was Damn it, Bellatrix, you are roughly as helpful as a fart in a windstorm.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* Kind of a whizzer-bang, then? I'm a bit of a Canon Nazi myself and I think I stayed within bounds--at least as far as the Lexicon goes. Alas, I'm too busy trying to write to read.
Truly....but not well.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*waves white flag* You got me there. *snerk*
Well that's amazing . you always surprise me and please me with your writings. And the end was totaly unexpected afer having read your live journal. But once again my imperfect english can't allow me to find what "B word" I am suppose to understand. Could you help me with that or maybe there is nothing more to understand ?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hee hee. Well, the one I was thinking of was "bitch," which was undoubtedly on Narcissa's mind at that time.
Another good one. As per usual, you had Sev's inner monologue cracking me up. You are great at writing the kind of dry humor he would probably really think. Nice spin on the scene from HBP. Can't wait for more!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! This chapter certainly has mixed reviews, so it's nice to hear that it works for some!
Response from Celtickiss (Reviewer)
Thanks for the response. I wanted to apologize for somehow managing to give a review twice. How in hell did I do that? I'll try not to let it happen again! ;)
Taking liberties, are we? Making Harry Potter X-rated? You must be a Gryffindor, dear Author, there is no other explanation for the audacity. I realize that such is the predeliction of a large portion of the readership of this site, but really! That seems particularly gratuitous. Narcissa isn't that type, and while I suspect under other circumstances, Severus wouldn't have minded in the least, these weren't those circumstances. It seems you are keeping with your theme of giving Snape a hard time, though.I shudder to think what gem comes next from your fertile imagination.I eEagerly await the next chapter.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Moi? *major affront* A Slytherin through and through, dear reader, make no mistake! As for types--neither had much of a choice, as it was a matter beyond their control. How each of them will react to this new and unexpected turn in their relationship remains to be seen.Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure the next person Snape gets it on with is Hermione (although something might come up...)
Hmmmm. enjoyed the chapter, liked the way you did it, seeing Snape's side of it all, and I always thought he was bluffing in that chapter, glad you think so too!Not too keen on the outcome of a Vow to the Death, how many other people is he going to have it off with?! But it does add a good twist, not something I expected to happen, which is all part of the fun.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Exactly. And I'm just loving the thought of next time Lucius catches up with him. Thank Merlin for Azkaban...
Well and truly fucked indeed! And none the wiser either. I've always thought he was bluffing and you pointed it out very clearly. The poor man is a slag ... well it's not his choice, but still! I'm glad it wasn't Wormtail to whom he had to make and Unbreakable Vow!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* I toyed with the idea of making it so that the witnesses to the Bond also had to participate, but even I couldn't torture poor Sev that badly...
Blah Blah Blah...snooooooze
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Okay, fine, it was a little on the long side. (Or so Narcissa said...!)
Yes, literally and metaphorically too, in the case of Severus's last words.I somehow think that I'm not the only one to want Bellatrix's head. Preferably on a pike, but a pitchfork would be fine.Is it too much to hope that you won't screw poor Severus around in this way again?Long chapter compared to some, although I can't say that it's nice due to the events depicted therein.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Sigh. Yeah, I realized it was too long. But I was having such fun with the snark! Is it too much to hope ...In a word, yes. I love torturing Snape.
I enjoyed the way Severus thought of Pettigrew, and your retelling of ch 2 of HBP with the addition of the Vow to the Death.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!
oh my
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yep, yep... it just keeps piling higher and deeper.
Response from pickles (Reviewer)
Update?
Beautimus! The first part of the chapter had me laughing a lot, but then the mood shift with Albus worked quite well. It struck me as sort of touching. Sorry for not reviewing sooner, but this was very good like it always is!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Glad you're enjoying it!
Very interesting chapter, the conversation with Dumbledore, and Snape realizing that the end is near, loved the owl too, very cute and very crafty of Dumbledore to have such a cunning little friend!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Seems that this little owl gets around a bit, doesn't it? He's just so darn pretty, who could resist him? *kinda like Snape...*Oooh, I SO did not just say that!
