Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

When will the next one come out????I'm dying here!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Argh, sorry, I've gotten a lot of paid work AND an inspiration on Heirs of Slytherin...I'll get to it, honest.
heehee :D. Together at last! can't wait for another chappy
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Workin' on it...
Wow! Excellent!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*big smile* Thanks! Glad you finally had a chance to read some of it--and that chapter you helped me with is STILL not up--but it's only a few chappies away now.
Response from Vorona (Reviewer)
Yes, I know. And yes, I'm glad I got a chance to read some of the earlier stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing it, though :)
Beautifully done! As always, I appreciate the way you have gotten into Snape's mind. I love it! It's been a long journey though, hasn't it?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
It's certainly getting up there. But the rewards are about to start rolling in.
That was such a great chapter, I laughed my head off in several places, 'Snape flopped onto his four-poster bed in a downright juvenile fashion, grinning fom ear to ear' that made me grin from ear to ear, 'cause you just can't imagine him doing it, and I think it's kinda cute!I have so got to work 'fuckses' into my vocab, I am going to tell my work mate and demand that we say at least once a day, I love it!You promised Hermione would be back, and she wasn't, how could you?! Next chapter soon please, and I think we all deserve a bit of action, it's been ages!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Sorry, sorry, the chapter got too long for Herms to be included, but I REALLY promise the next one will be worth the wait. Honest. I hope. She'll be in it, at any rate.
I'm looking forward to the next one!!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
argh, yah, too bad it's Spring Break and my kids are out of school--no writing of squicky stuff when young readers are around... :(
This is the most clever and entertaining version of the events of "Spinner's End" I have seen. I especially enjoyed the whiz-bangs in Wormtail's pants and Snape's inner monologue whilst making the vow.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! That's nice to hear!
Once again your accurate style of Severus' snark and inner thoughts works to make a chapter interesting. I know I've read this all before in the book but I still love reading this to hear it from the Snarky Defense Instructor! My fav part has got to be when the Slytherins started cheering their 'twistedly loyal hearts out 'and that Sev plans to get the 'little bastards for it'. I loved that so much; I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. Can't wait for the promised reunion between Sev and Hermione. God I hope she jumps his bones!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
You know, that part came to me totally out of the blue as I was wrapping up the chapter, and I about died laughing as I realized that's what was going on. Gotta love those Slyth's.
That's why the dream sequence sounded so much like Avery's fic! It was nice to reread the events of HBP in Snape's POV. It's a nice change from Harry's carefully nurtured hatred.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yah, I adored "Traitor" so much I couldn't resist a little shout-out. I like it when fics interconnect a little (gee, can you tell from this total reorientation of OOTP and HBP? I am the Empress of the Land of Duh.)
"Fuckses, precious, I WILL go to Gladrags and purchase ONE shirt of the "pullover" variety." How I needed to laugh, this evening! I don't recall Gollem ever saying "fuckses," though it fits him perfectly. Lovely chapter, I enjoyed it tremendously, and I'm wondering where I can work in the phrase "Fuckses, precious." Certainly not with my best LOTR buddy, who happens to be my teen-aged son.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* Glad the giggle came at a good time. I've certainly benefitted from enough of those--thank Illuvatar for fanfic!
I thought I recognized that dream! Poor Severus - he had such high hopes for a better day than this. Thanks for writing.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Wellllll, the day's not over just yet...
Please, no! Not Slughorn too! Have mercy on poor Snape.Looking forward to the next chapter. I hope Severus has a short wait too, although knowing my luck you'll have Draco sneak in there.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Bwahahaha--I hadn't thought about Slughorn fancying our Severus, but it does pose an interesting idea... Nah, Slughorn only gets in bed with people he can network with.As for the next chapter--well, I DID note that Chapter Eight of HBP ends as Hermione disappears to do her prefect duties, and Harry and Ron don't see her again until the next morning.
Rock on! I didn't realise there was another chapter waiting!Good chapter, but weird aswell, well I suppose I mean it left me feeling a bit weird, and sad, because we know what's coming in the next year. Sevrus knows it's not going to be a good year, and that something awful is going to happen.I really do love reading this other side of the story we know and love so well, and you do it so brilliantly, you've even got Voldy perfect, well done!More soon please, and with our favorite bushy haired know-it-all?!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yah, the Year 6 stuff by necessity will be darker, but I hope to make up for it with his interactions with Hermione...hint, hint.
Hurrah! About time! And about time I've my internet up and running, of sorts, you so don't want to know how long it takes to download a chapter, my patience is truly stretched I can tell you! But hey, who cares when we have updates, it's worth the wait.Great chapter, lots of nice interesting bits, am I right in guessing the potion is going to help Dumbledore's hand? Can Hermione come back soon please, I miss her!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, the potion was created to prevent burns, so the idea is that it will stop this burning reaction in Dumble's hand. Even though a magic burn is different from a sunburn--but that's why Snape comments about the nature of light and heat. He's half Muggle, so he's taken it all into consideration...
I can't wait to see your take on the rest of the 6th year. The nod to Traitor was a nice touch.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I adored "Traitor!" I SO needed something to put Snape in a bad mood, and a dream of Wormtail banging Herms fit the bill perfectly.
"Ratricide" would be a lot cuter than "rodentricide" giving off echoes of "fratricide" I wanted to add that back in chap 1 or so you lost the e off morale "moral" just didn't make sense in context.Interesting interpolations with HBP throughout. I eagerly await future chapters. Hermione must be fit to be tied by now.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I like rodenticide...otherwise people will comment that I spelled "fratricide" wrong and rumors will circulate about Snape and Pettigrew being related...A typo? ACK! Where?I think "fit to be tied" is a perfect description. Good thing classes start again soon...
this story is brillant, i searched 3 websiter to find it, one question is the ending gona be the same as on on mugglenet?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yes. But there will be a lot more intervening chapters.
what the heck did he give him to drink, your description reminded me of suntan lotion which is unsuitable for ingestion, lol. I have never heard of a sun remedy that you drink, it has me thinking. Thanks for the update, I look forward to more as always.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
In a recent chapter, Snape mentioned that he'd been sunburned once and had invented his own Sunban Potion to make sure that was never repeated. Not sure how it works, but then again, it's magical, so I suppose there's no simple explanation.
Response from wilder0511 (Reviewer)
Well now that you mention it, I seem to remeber the reference to a sunban potion.
excellent chapter.
so the sunban will help the headmasters hand?
thank you for the new chapter.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, what I envision is that Snape's potion counteracts all sorts of burns, including whatever it was that got Dumbles. That was why he was commenting about the limited understanding that Wizards have about physics and energy. Being a half-blood, he had access to scientific materials and presumably learned enough about radiation and tissue oxidation that he could make this potion "strong" enough to counter both the sun and magical burns.
Sir Catogan and I think that Severus must have had a hard time of it so far if he's that starved for company and for kindness. We feel sad for him, and we hope Hermione is able to give him what he needs.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
You'll get the full explanation of how lonely he is in about 11 more chapters.
This story is just so awesome - Snape and all his plotting is just amazing. Can't wait to read more!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!
Ah. I've missed this story, and I do hope all is well with you.I enjoyed the careful conversation between Snape and Dumbledore, and perhaps using Headmaster as a signal between them indicating which is for public (read Moldy Voldy) or private consumption.Very, very nice. I particularly liked Albus' blush when he realized what Snape had to go through for the edification. Your version of the wizarding world is quite Elizabethan.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
All is well, thanks--just been going to town on Heirs of Slytherin and other stuff.I imagine after 15 years of double-agentry, Snape and Dumbles have the whole routine of switching between Material To Share vs Material To Keep Under Occlumency down pat.*snerk* I blame my quaint sensibilities on Subversa... her wonderful vision of Austenesque wizardry has rubbed off. Although Albus might just have blushed because, like Voldy, it was awfully taxing for him to imagine the Snapester gettin' some.
Let me just start by saying I am sooo glad you updated. Hey, writers block happens to the best of us, but this story is really very awesome so please don't stop no matter what your muse decides to pull. It was nice to revisit Sev's dry sarcasm which is still as snappy as ever. I laughed a bit at the thought of Pettigrew with a fire cracker in his drawers, harhar. You write scenes between Dumbledore and Sev very nicely. You can feel the bond they have and its a good set up for what Sev is going to have to do to his mentor and how terrible it will be for him. Brilliant!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! Believe it or not, the best parts of this story are yet to come (IMHO), I just have to GET to them. My son is squalling for more chapters of Book 7, and he's much louder than any of you guys, so I have to set my priorities...
Just wondering if Dumbledore's head had been turned to charcoal, if his famous twinkling eyes would turn into diamonds...Hope to see more of this soon!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* Good question!
I know I've already reviewed this chapter, but I've moved house and been without my internet connection for over 2 weeks now, which is so evil you just wouldn't believe it, so here I am at work and I'm sneaking on line, not to pay bills which I should be doing but checking to see if you've updated, which you haven't! Now I don't want to whinge and nag, but please can we have some more soon?! It's been so long! It's worth getting caught by the boss just to read a new chapter! *sitting up and begging now*
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*laughs, but in a GOOD way* I know, I'm sorry--I have to write whatever muse is hitting me at the moment, and lately it's all been Heirs of Slytherin. I just brought Sirius Black back from beyond the veil and my son is demanding another chapter. I promise that once I get back to Fair Ex, it will definitely be worth the wait--it's about to earn its NC-17 rating within the next few chapters.
