Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Another chapter that made me laugh. What you wrote about the turd in the punchbowl put me over the edge! And when Sev told the half-lie about Harry's Occulmency capabilities I had a nice giggle. Nice job!

Thanks!
What a lovely reunion! Gotta love those two.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
indeed.
Lovin the Sev and Hermie cutesomes!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* If Snape heard you say that, he'd cut out your tongue.
Ooh, tense chapter. It's interesting to read Sev's perspective during that time in the fifth book.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! It was fun to write, with my OOTP in one hand and the Lexicon on screen...
OK, definitely not any of the dreams I was expecting.? I wouldn't have imagined Severus being of too much use in interpreting it, since he doesn't seem to quite understand how his own emotions work, let alone other people's, but I'm sure you'll surprise me.? Oh, I know!? They can go ask Trelawny!? Oh, wait.? Yeah, Severus will do a better job.? He's at least reality-based.? OK, I'll stop now.? Love your story and looking forward to more.? Inquiring minds want to KNOW!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*whispers* I helped him figure it out a little...
interesting chapter to ponder. thank you. waiting for more. p
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! Pondering was my hope.
I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. This is the big secret of her dreams she has been keeping? Is Hermione androgenous or soemthing? Petrified? Are PARTS of her still petrified? Hmmm...cruel cliffy #2...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Whoa, you know, I had totally forgotten about the fact that she got petrified by the Basilisk until I read this review--that freaking RULZ! It's perfect!! I like that so much I think I'm going to edit the story.
Response from SpSt (Reviewer)
I'm an inadvertant muse!Oh goody!Well, now that I have had an impact on this story, I am going to have to start a new set of ideas on where this story may go...this dream bit really has me wodnering what is going on. Also, may I add that the new weepy Hermione is distinctly different from the very ballsy Hermione who sought out the Occlumency lessons? I'm wondering what this all has to do with the Dream.Getting more confused all the time.

This is one cliffie I'm going to wrap up immediately--the next chapter will explain it all. trust me.
Response from SpSt (Reviewer)
I think inadvertant muses should get hints.
Ah ... poor Hermione. Fear of failure can be as overwhelming as fear of success. At least I'm assuming she's a virgin confronting carnal desire which manifests in dream terms more frequently as the date for her tests draws closer ... and it's something she doesn't know how to do -- regardless of the number of books she's read.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, you've got that mostly right, although there's one little detail she has yet to explain.
Response from Bambu (Reviewer)
O.o! I can hardly wait for that other little detail!
Awww! Why the tears??? I'd like a massage from Snape any day!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Our Miss Granger has a lot on her mind...
Okay, seriously messed up Hermione. Not unexpected, given the start of this tale. Why Snape puts up with it though, despite any attraction, is impossible to explain away. No amount of hand-waving ( or wand-waving) is going to be of much use.Canon Hermione is not seriously messed up; if anything, she's too conventional. Snape on the other hand, displays all the symptoms of child abuse and multiple-source post-traumatic stress disorder, and should he survive the defeat of Voldemort, will add serious legal problems to the mix.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Interesting. However there's not much there I can work with, as reviews go. It sounds like you have a story to write, spinning off from my story... I don't think there's such a thing as a 16 year old who's NOT messed up in some way. And I shudder to think of all the ways Snape is messed up, and I'm only going to have him confront probably a fraction of them in this story. But stories about complacent people with nothing new to learn tend to be a bit on the dull side. Why he puts up with her? Because she puts up with him, of course! Hence "Fair Exchanges."
Response from KarenDetroit (Reviewer)
I'll buy that last statement. Okay, where does it go from here?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Far too many places to enumerate here--you'll just have to keep reading, I'm afraid.
Hmm -- You've rearranged the furniture in this one. Now I have to wait until Ch 20 is up to see what you're going to do with it. What seems like a cliffie, wasn't ... it actually is a good stopping point. But then, I have 'the inner eye' on this!
NO, not like Trelawney!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*evil grin* Like Firenze, then?
Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
s-Nicker -- well I am a Sagittarius, so I guess a bit like Firenze.
You wrote: "Honesty had worked wonders with Hermione, but too much of it was a bad thing."
I have to heartily agree; too much honesty can be bad. As I read farther down this chapter, I see that your Snape seems to have the same basic theory. To tell enough of the truth that the lie blends in [therefore saving your neck] and you don't get bogged down with having to remember what little deceptions you may have had to tell, only with the best of intentions, to whom.
Slytherins Rule!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hee hee. Well, the other side of that coin is that ir you live with integrity, you don't have to be dishonest--and Snape, unfortunately, screwed that up early on. Having been ripped off by con artists who made lying an art form, I don't much care for liars, even ones with good intentions. But that was exactly how they operated--telling just enough truth to make the lie seem plausible.
I love that last line. Enough to send any man screaming from the room.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Exactly. I love to torture Snape.
Oi! Why's she crying? I expected her to jump his bones or something, not burst into tears! Great chapter: edgy H, uneasy S (but willing to try), very well-done.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
You'll find out, trust me.
I think you are the tease not severus, oh well she is still to young for it not to be squicky anyway. great chapter but a little short, keep em coming
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Moi? *affronted face* Okay, guilty as charged. And the squick is coming up within the next 5 chapters, I promise. You'll be cringing at your screen very soon.
Of course she burst into tears. What girl doesn't burst into tears after a relaxing massage?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*snerk* Oh, I don't know... a NORMAL one? Hee hee.
thank you for the new chapter. i hope you had a Merry Christmas.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I did, tho a tiring one. Up past 1 for 4 nights in a row--but the kids had an awesome Xmas!
An update so soon?!!! (giggles with girlish glee). And I'm the first reviewer! Oh Gods, how HG/SS obsessed am I???Why the tears girlie? If I had Severus's hands on me, the last thing I'd want to do is cry, unless it was with the unbearable ecsta... ahem, I mean, great chapter, well done, dare I hope for an update tomorrow? (bats eyelashes a la Lavender Brown)"like a raisin through a guinea pig" te he he, where do you come up with this stuff, cracked me up!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, that particular one was a result of 10 years of being a slave to guinea pigs. Herms is a little wound up over O.W.L.s and *ahem* something else.
Very original way of dealing with her fear.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Our Snape is nothing if not unconventional.
I started reading this fic on Ashwinder & I was completely hooked from the start, & you updated quickly...until chapter 6, that is, and then-nothing! I was desperate! Luckily, the good folks at hgss_digest kindly pointed me to MNFF, but alas, the story was under heavy censorship there; just I was about to weep with frustration, lo & behold, the generous author kindly led me along to this wonderful site where I have spent the better part of the day engrossed in this truly engaging story! Kudos to you, you manage to follow canon so faithfully in the timeline & characterisations, yet give it your own stamp of originality. Snape's inner monologues are sardonic, amusing & brilliant! I couldn't bear to pause between chapters to leave reviews, but I hope the length of this one appeases the muse :) Please keep the updates coming soon, or I'll be forced to even more desperate searches than before (or reduced to a gibbering wreck!)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thank you for such a lovely review, and for being so determined! I have had two chapters in the queue at SH for literally a MONTH now and they just aren't moving--I suspect their mods have been swamped as nothing seems to be getting updated lately. As for MNFF--well, there's nothing to add to your description. I can't blame them, the story was never intended to go all the places it has gone, and it doesn't help that I've annoyed at least one of the mods. *sourpuss face* But I'm glad to know I've left an e-trail clear enough to follow!
Ah, lovely. I'm still so happy you're taking some of the more standard cliches and spinning them on their axis. You've done a very nice job on both of their perspectives, and I particularly like the concept that he's fairly impervious ... except to her.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That was the idea, anyway--I'm glad it's working for you!
Oh, thank you! Your story is almost painful to read at times because it's still a WIP and you've done such a good job of leaving it ambiguous in so many respects. This is brilliant for being a bit of a behind-the-scenes piece of work. I'm only just now snatching a few minutes to begin to catch up with your recent posts, and I want to thank you again for not having Snape and Hermione tumble without thought but hormonal impetus into bed and a true sexual liaison! Do I need to still tell you how very much I enjoy this story ... it's gripping and you've made some insightful additions to the Potions master's persona.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!! What a lovely Xmas review. I've tried to make it work really tightly with Canon and timelines and so on, as well as a "realistic" development of the bond between SS and HG...I'm so glad you're enjoying it!
Thank you for the new chapter. I'm so glad Severus can hold his own. It would be nice if he could confined in someone but... You know how the story goes. Good reading. Waiting for more. p
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
You know, as much as I love Snape, I don't think I'd want to be his confidante... talk about dangerous information!
Response from pickles (Reviewer)
Very true.
"...and thus had all the subtlety of a turd in a punchbowl..." Snork! Never heard that one before! Poor Severus, having to skate around the issue with Hermione. I loved his reflections on Lupin-- saving it up for a special occasion! How insightful!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I have waited SO long to have a story where I could use the turd in a punchbowl line, and it's so nice to have someone notice it. *grins*
Sorry - my bad - its there now. yus!Great story!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Whoa, weirdness...well, glad it's better now!
