Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Thanks! You might want to go read Ch. 8 here--it was one I couldn't post on MNFF.
Er... joke chapter? There isnt any chapter...only the heading...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Stupid computer! No donut for you!
The perfect end to a less than perfect day, finding another chapter! Hermione is clearly of the "blurt out the confrontation" camp (just like my husband), and Severus is obviously a "run away and live in misery rather than risk the pain of confrontation" kind of guy (that would be me, in our house). Great job! Really rang the "real life" bell.

Cool! Thanks!
A good chapter.? I like the reactions.?

Thanks!
Yes, but...there's that flask, ready to blow at any minute, and I thought they were in the classroom, and....Happy Christmas, anyway.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, Snape's just being paranoid as usual re: the flask--and the classroom for that matter. I mean, Really, WHO would go into the Potions classroom when it wasn't absolutely necessary?
About fell out of my chair laughing at "Professor Lupin's time of the month..." Ah yes, the transformation, we know it well!
But as for 'thoughtless tosser'! Well, that's another soapbox for another time and space.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, poor Remus. He must HATE that.Pre-Moonstral Syndrome, anyone? *cackles*
Just a note to say how much I am enjoying your story. The waivering insecurity and confidence in both Hermione and Severus give an odd kind of back and forth balance to each other without being too over the top. I look forward to future chapters. Thanks, JoAnne

Thanks! I wanted this story to sound real, so it's nice to hear it's working for people!
Devilishly good. Give me more.Elen

It's coming--I have to pace myself.
I'm still following this with freat delight - and it's so nice that you update so regularly, it makes me appreciate this well written story even more. It's great that you make us follow some of SS's thoughts and reprimanding himself; it's quite hilarious, sometimes. This one, for example: "Now leave, damn you, I've done everything I must as your professor, and I can't keep staring at this bottle forever.". It's a great method: you tell us what he's doing and thinking at the same time. Please keep the chapters coming!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, I always love that little bit of behind-the-eyes info. It's not as crafty because it's kind of expositional, but it's nice not to have to guess what's really going on.
I'm definitely waiting to see how this pans out now, and to get the answers to the cliffie. :) Keep up the good work.
One eensy thing though... No chipmunks over here in the UK. Squirrels yes, but we're limited to those really annoying cartoon characters with helium voices when it comes to chipmunks. *laughs*
Response from Ratchick (Reviewer)
Damn, beaten to it!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I know, the chipmunk police are incredibly vigilant at this site!
I'm enjoying this, and love his inner debates.Small Britpick - daffodills would be over by May, even in Scotland, and endearing as they sound, we don't have chipmunks. It made it a little hard getting into the chapter, but I'm glad I did
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
AAAAAUGH! *frantically edits* Thanks you guys. OMG. How can you LIVE without chipmunks? Half the size of squirrels and twice as cute. You know, now that I think about it, daffies would be done here in May, too. *thunks head* I always get May and March confused. I can't tell left from right either, always mix them up.
Awe. How old is Hermione in this fic, 15 or 16ish. Very typical emotions for that age group. Well played. Can't wait for more.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Herms has a September birthday so she is 16, one of the older kids in the class. But I'm pushing 40 and I think I'd feel the same way in her shoes. *wink* However, I doubt I'd consider myself cast off for another woman--I'd just have a bear trap set under his desk when he returned to guarantee a "captive" audience for the smackdown.
Very true--been there, done that, got the scars and the nightmares. Talk about a leap--from Xmas to May? Did you post out of sequence, maybe? Or is it really that pathetic?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Heck no! Get thee back to your OOTP summary calendar! Harry starts getting Occlumency lessons in January of Year 5, after they return from Xmas break. I imagined Herms starting a week or two later. That's why, in one of the early chapters, I mentioned Harry's interview for the Quibbler--which took place on Valentine's day, after the disastrous date with Cho to M. Puddifoot's. Snape got drunk just after Trelawney was traded in for Firenze--remember "pat the horsie?"--which happened in March. Snape's Worst Memory took place in April, just before the spring holidays, which lasted either 2 or 3 weeks. They were over in early May and this chapter takes place near the end of May.JKR is only so-so about keeping dates realistic and specific, so I've done the same. "Fair Ex" has been deliberately constructed to match dates and events so it can seem like a "real behind the scenes story" of OOTP (and HBP to come). Check the calendar at The Lexicon--I've worked really hard on this story to "keep it real!" :)
nicely put. i'm a little surprised she didn't bind him to the chair after everyone left and threaten to hex. thank you for a new chapter so quickly.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* Maybe that'll come in a later chapter. ;)
Severus is an intelligent being. HE'S the one that took off, without warning, sort of like some sneaky dog in the middle of the night. Why is he so pumped up over Hermione not running back into his life after his private holiday away?
He doesn't share information and then expects her to just pick up right where they left off like being abandoned for the holidays did not matter to her. I don't know if I'm more ticked off at men in general, or you for writing about it so well. [See, it's your fault.]
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
What can I say, he's a totally self-absorbed idiot when it comes to relationships. That's why I love him so. It's downright pathological, really. Good thing Herms won't take that sort of crap from him.

Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
There's just something about this story that causes me to make double posts ... your fault again, I'm sure.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Ahah! I see my Internet-based mind control plan is finally working! I shall take over the world! *Phantom of the Opera music*
Wow. I could actually feel my heart being ripped out in Snape's place. Ouch. I hope you aren't going to make us wait too much longer for the updates. Pretty please. I need to know what's going to happen. Why did she stay away in the first place. Has she mastered her occulemency now? So many questions....
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Answers will come, I promise.
You and your cliff hangers! Who said that? I may have to burrow out my OotP and find out!
This reminds me (somewhat obliquely) of the scene in Notting Hill where he is walking along the street through the seasons missing her to the tune of "Ain't No Sunshine." The movie was only so-so in my opinion, but that little bit made an impression on me. Likewise this chapter has made an impression on me. Sursum ad Summum!
Response from jenonymous (Reviewer)
P.S. Not to imply that this story is only so-so! It isn't ! It's terrific! And the chapter is terrific!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
awwww... Thanks for the review AND the qualification. I haven't seen that movie. It was both fun and depressing to write this chapter but I figured we needed a glimpse into the utterly wretched mind of Severus Snape.
"I believe you're a good man, Severus." That was so lovely. They make such a good couple together. Nice job!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!
Awwwwwwww! Way to not take no for an answer Hermoine! So very cute!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That's our girl...
A kiss on the hand, now you can't get much more chivalrous than that can you? It's nice to see they are bonding even if it does seem they take one step backwards every time.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, one can't learn to dance without learning to step back.
Oh yes! The drama is awesome!!! I'm glad she chucked that paperweight at him. He might have been trying to help, but what a bastard he can be. Unfortunately that's why I love him. Grrrrr!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Alas, that seems to be the plague that infects us all.
Fair enough, but slow; painfully slow! This left canon a looong time ago. But that's all right. Beginnning to think Rowling just makes it up as she goes along, despite all the notebooks and planning.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Left canon? Huh? "Snape's Worst Week" corresponds seamlessly with Canon, as far as I can tell... *pouts*
