Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Loving the twisty take on where Snape was while the battle at the Ministry was raging. OotP has always bugged me a bit because it seems to be full of loose ends and red herrings, plotwise. But.. that does leave a lot of room for the imagination, and this is a satisfying alternate view of things that might have been going on behind the scenes.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That was one thing I hoped to achieve with this fic. :)
Won't he feel guilt that he was "being laid" while Hermione nearly got killed? This Snape, however enjoyable to read he may be, isn't the least sympathetic to me. Well, it's not as if I liked Snape because he's such a sympathetic character ;)The smarmy little weasel was showcasing that beautiful silver hand = priceless.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, in Snape's defense, he doesn't know what happened at the Ministry yet, other than whatever happened really annoyed the Dark Lord.I liked the weasel line too. :)
Was Umbridge cognizant during the part where Severus was having his little trystssss? After all he did try to convince Dolores that he was a gay guy ...that's into bestiality?
Was he or the 'ladies' being responsible so that no little half-Snapes are going to result from this romp?
Does he not feel even the slightest remorse for having kicked up his heels with the herd when he's attracted to Hermione?
Will Hermione find out about what happened in the woods while she was risking her life at the Ministry?
I think these are valid points that need to be answered! Since you wrote it, I think it only fair ... well, I'm just really curious!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
1. I think Umbridge was quite steeped in Post Traumatic Shock whilst the pony play was going on. He did let her lag behind a little, too.2. I would love to see a little half Snape result from this. He's certainly got the nose for it already. In fact, that's so cute I might have to throw it in there.3.Oh, he's a GUY, come on. Hump first, think later. Besides, those gals weren't going to let him leave without some action.4. I haven't decided yet. Snape is, after all, a man who keeps his secrets.
That leads me to a naughty thought. If he's able to "please" -what?- four centaura? What does that say about his "equipment"?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*big wolfish grin* We'll have to ask Herms in about 10 more chapters.
Hmmm. It would appear as if someone might be insinuating that a certain Divination professor might not be housebroken! Naturally, when Firenze was invited into Hogwarts to teach classes, I did wonder what facilities were set up for his use. Was he just to find a private corner in that 'conjured forest' classroom? Did he save it in baskets for Herbology or Hagrid's garden? Did he have to dash outside every time he had to go? Can a centaur that's 'holding it' jiggle on four legs? These are just some more of the multitudes of unanswered questions in the world of Harry Potter.
OK, I've stirred it up. Now it's your turn to distract with some other point as you usually do...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hmmm...now there's something to ponder. I shudder to think of what Myrtle would do if Firenze dropped a load in her commode...probably duck and cover.
Yup, I'm definetly a fan of these cantaura.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Me too. Pity the stallions outnumber them so badly.
That makes Severus's guilt all the worse, that the curse was developed from one of his own. His silent scream says more than words ever could. However angsty this chapter is, you make up for that with touches like the grumpy Fawkes and "theveruth thnape".Great stuff as usual! Why do I get the feeling that the dragon dung will really hit the fan in the next chapter or so?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I love Snape, but Fawkes is my all time favorite character of the Potterverse. I have this theory that he's the keystone to getting rid of Voldy--that Dumbles had to die to free Fawkes up to become Harry's familiar, so he can help Harry conquer evil. I'm actually writing my own Book 7 for my sons in which that gets played out.
reading some of the reviews has given me a thought. will LV sit back and ponder Snape's memories of the forest? Will he look back at each of the females and try to figuire which one is named. How will Severus explain the Hermione one when she's not visible to the minds eye? Shy Newbie?
Waiting for your wonderful story and comments. p87
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, fortunately for all concerned, Voldy's got a lot on his mind at the moment. That whole bit at the Ministry probably didn't sit right with him much.
[Squawks in shock] His a** is grass, in Hermione's book, for not coming to see her! Seriously deep doo. However, an excellent chapter, and I know why he couldn't, but he didn't even try to sneak! [Sigh.] The foals were cute, especially the lisp, and isn't it just like Firenz to play up both sides? What an honor, but don't push your luck! Great job!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks, yeah, those stallions, they talk the talk but they're truly dumb as posts, that's why they never say anything useful.
I thought Firenze was going to grill him about the night before in the forest.
thank you for a quick update. Will Hermione hear about the time in the forest? waiting for more your faithful reader p87
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
you'll have to wait and see....*evilness*
Oh WOW! Poor Severus.. I'm glad he didn't endure Voldy's wrath! Great chapter..so Looking forward to more!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, it's funny how you never know just what random thing might just save your bum...
I am so happy to know that every day when I need my daily dose of ss/hg I can count on an update from you, I do love this story. As I think I have mentioned in the past, your chapters can be short, but you make up for it with frequent updates, so I'll not complain too much. Oh, and I'm a little weirded out by the snape and a bunch of horses thing I don't care how pretty they are, yuck, lol.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, think of it this way...we don't know much about the anatomy of centaura, so who's to say they don't remain humanoid below the waist? Klyta could have been just kidding about needing a ladder...
What an excellent closing line! The whole scene was comical in a surreal sort of way. "Did you come here on horseback?" HA! (I suppose you might have to change the rating if you'd said "did you come on horseback?")
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
BWAHAHAHA! Good one. I think even Snape would have had to laugh at that one.
Ohh and the plot thickens. What will Hermione think of Severus' little adventure in to the woods and what will Severus think realizing that he was thinking of her whilst having sex. Your quite good you know please continue this story It's one of my favorites.Elen
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! Well, it's not like she and Snape ever promised to be exclusive...(gigglesnort)
good chapter. thank you for the quick update. i saw hermione's name in the midst of names. was that an accidental slip of his? was he thinking of her while attending the needs of the herd?
waiting for more.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
My theory is that Hermione's name has become etched into his synapses to the extent that when he thinks of anything to do with sex, it links back to her. So when Voldy was confirming his story, her name just sort of naturally floated into it. I think Snape was totally surprised to hear that name come out of Voldy's mouth--surprised and scared doo-doo-less.
"When Dumbledore arrived last night, I was certain you had betrayed me. I intended to slaughter you, here in your own kitchen, in a particularly abhorrent fashion. And against all probability, you have brought good cheer on an otherwise dreary morning. Ah, Severus," he continued in a tone that could almost pass for fondness, "I still don't trust you. But I'm glad I can let you live."BUT I'M GLAD i CAN LET YOU LIVEYou're brilliant.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! I love writing Voldy. But he's not as much fun as Snape.
I really think that the first part of this chapter truly rivals that part of Ch. 5 that has become infamous.
Yes, having finished the chapter now, most definitely, this chapter will hold equal place in fanfiction perfection along with your Ch. 5 The Great Escape.
BUT - Hermione! Severus did a little brain slip and LV just thought she was one of the 'centaura'. Hmmm. Or it was more like Sev's Little Brain slipped...
Too cool Fawkes! Great way to start the year out.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
The first part is more like the "Distillations" chapter, really, as Snape is a little delirious from so much magical action the night before... I loved the idea of him daydreaming about all the little froggies gathering under the floating Umbridge.Hard to say who slipped with the Hermione business, but Snape was lucky to get away with it...this time.
I agree with Hermione--I don't care much for horses...That was a stunning plot twist, in any event.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
And that's not the last one, either... *evil grin*
Jeanine - I have picked this wonderful story back up here since its demise at Mugglenet. Rereading the chapters has been a blast. I look forward to the next update.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yay! Glad to see you over here!
Oh dear, I hope Voldemort doesn't dwell on those names. He'll eventually figure out where he heard the name Hermione before. Or did he actually say her name on purpose to see Snape's reaction. I think he may have something up his evil sleeve! By the way, Severus might have had to keep the peace with the Centauras but I think he might have enjoyed it a bit to much. I hope guilt overcomes him! ...growl...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, now, you never know. It might not have been all that much fun...Voldy's definition of a good time is probably a bit warped, after all. As to whether he "meant" to say Hermione...well, that will remain to be seen. I think he was a bit too stunned (aren't we all?) to be sneaking about at that moment.
And there you have it... sex can get a person into trouble, but it can get them out, too. Nice tightrope act with the Dark Lord. Except for that slipup with Hermione's name, and speaking of her, won't there be some explaining to do? (And I don't think she'll find "I just started equestrian lessons" very plausible.)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* Yeah, there probably will eventually. but at least Voldy didn't realize that there weren't 5 centaura...
I've not been around for a few days, and you've been busy it seems ... as has Severus. Hmmm. So the centaura seem to have an understanding of events beyond their forest and move to protect their favorites. Is one of the centaura named Hermione or is that a mental stutter?I thought it was extremely clever of you to put Voldemort at Snape's house on Spinner's End. It gives a subtle reason for Wormtail's presence. I'm curious to know how Hermione - the witch - will respone to Snape's getting laid while she's was practically killed. Hmmm. Were it me, I wouldn't be happy at all.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I think Snape's going to keep that under wraps for a while. And no, one was NOT named Hermione--Voldy picked up the name when he did Legilimency on Snape. Fortunately he was too busy ogling Nephele to pay attention to the other females...
So what is a fair exchange for Hermione, Hmmm? And what about the occlumency lessons? With what is going on between them, does he not think that his escapade in the forest will become known? Snape made a vow not to hurt her, but I imagine that he has when she finds out, and she will, I am sure. I am also wondering how dear Snapey is going to feel when he finds out that Hermione is badly hurt while he was in the forest enjoying his bestial gang bang....
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, that part is yet to come.
OMG that was so freaking hilarious! ' So put that in your pipe and smoke it'. Oh so good! I'm glad Sev woke up feeling like shit though. Sorry, I just hate men who aren't faithful, but I see why you had to do it and trust me it was pretty much worth it. Please update as soon as you can! This is brill!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, Snape is our Go-To Guy, after all--if it Must Be Done, he'll do it.
Response from Celtickiss (Reviewer)
LOL, he certainly did what needed to be done. Or should I say whom needed to done. ;p My mind is in the gutter sorry!
