Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.
Reviews for Fair Exchanges
This is becoming increasingly ridiculous (I mean that in the nicest way, really, I like ridiculous!). I thought this story was a drama/romance--are you now going for humor? I have to admit, the scene with Snape staggering out of the forest after a night of frolicking with the Centauras was hilarious. When will Hermione return to the story line?Good update. Thanks.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
She's got to get out of the hospital wing, come on! And it's always been about Teh Funneh, since the first Great Escape chapter.
OK, you are going to be in SUCH trouble now. This chapter's ending had me laughing at the sheer absurdity but... I mean, Sirius Black ... ?! I know Snape is desperate for an out, but THAT desperate? And would Draco buy it? I'll stop now before I run out of my supply of question marks.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Why not? Sirius will never deny it, Snape can use him for any number of scapegoateries now. And he WAS a pureblood, and allegedly as dark as Voldy himself, right? The only one to escape from Azkaban, the mass murderer, betrayer of the Potters...Although I don't remember now if Sirius ever got exonerated or not, when Harry's big story went to press in the Quibbler...anyone?
Beautifully done!!!! My deepest apologies for doubting you!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
All is forgiven, grasshopper. Trust your Fawkes. *wink*
Wow the things Snape goes through. HAHA. Its very comical.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*bows*
Oh, this just gets better and better :DPoor Snape. He seems to be bouncing his way from one near disaster to another. I can't wait to se the next twist in the plot.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Snape says, "Welcome to my life, lady."
Oh, and what's poor little Harry going to do when he finds out about his beloved godfather's secret?? Word always gets around .... ? ?? ?I have to admit, I wasn't expecting this. And here I thought the centauras were going to be my big shock for the story!?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
BWAHAHAHA! Makes you wonder if Draco's going to slip that little dagger in there somewhere, hmm? I gotta take a close look at Book 6 and make sure there aren't any references like that!
Mmmmfffffff! If Sirius had a grave, he'd be rolling so fast in it that he'd disturb the planet's orbit.Umbridge deserves more than just saddles. Perhaps a bridle too?I hope Severus doesn't mean 'more intense' as better in terms of comparing kisses.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
hmmm...I don't think he finds them better, just more compact. *silly grin*
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
PS. More than saddles--perhaps a set of stirrups?
Response from ayerf (Reviewer)
Stirrups would do fine! I'm not exactly fluent in horse equipment. Perhaps Severus could send a bale of hay and a manger for the birth? (Hmm, that's a little too cruel, even for the Toad)
What a twisty, self-serving Snape you have here. You know, I could actually 'see' this sort of thing playing out in real life. GACK! Very clever of you, and it sets up all sorts of interesting tension/suspicion/love/hate/fear in the coming months. Poor Draco. I've never actually seen him as a gay character, but you manipulate his emotional response to Severus very well -- it's so completely mixed with his affection that it's difficult to see any of the boundaries between respect/hormones/love.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! Yeah, it's sad--I think about him spreading around Umbridge's rumors regarding Snape, secretly hoping to confirm them so he'll know if it's really safe to confess his own feelings...poor kid.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh The dead cannot protest, can they? In light of HBP events, I really wonder how Severus will be able to manage all his lies. At least, he didn't betray Hermione this time, though he - or his body - didn't seem to object too much.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Dead men refute no lies, that's fer sure.
Mindfuckery? Did you make that up, all by yourself? It's a good word.
The Gay Draco: Can you picture Lucius 'allowing' his son and only heir to be his own person!? Draco might be naturally inclined to prefer men, but I doubt very much if it is "the Malfoy way!" Lucius' pride [which is astoundingly immense], the continuance of the family name, the Pureblood Edict!! I don't think even the pampering Narcissa could get Lucius to accept a gay heir. Since he needs the heir, the gay part would simply not be.
"Oh, Severus." - The hole that is being dug keeps getting deeper and deeper. The dance around the truth has many complicated steps. But the main action is to keep the truth-given-out, to a minimum while at the same time, keeping any untruths [that protect the truth] to a minimum, also. Frankly, I think the yin and yang surrounding the untruth [the lie to Umbridge] in this instance should call for Severus gently telling Draco, that while he is flattered, The Truth of the matter is the gay thing was a ploy to deflect the Toad. Once the Toadie is out of the way, it won't matter what she thinks of Severus, but, should he continue with some sort of affair with Draco, to maintain this shield against Umbridge … once she is gone, he will have still humiliated Draco by using him, painted a foul picture of himself, and there would be Lucius to deal with. [Not to mention Hermione.]
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
MF-ery: I did! As if there aren't enough words in the English language already, but that one really seemed to fit the bill.I can imagine Lucius insisting on an heir-producing marriage for appearances, but after his initial conniption, I think he loves Draco too much to refuse him for what he is. So they sleep in separate bedrooms...Well, in an ideal world, you're right. But Snape, like an onion, has layers. Too many. I think his main concerns are 1) Not letting Draco down so hard that he'd become hateful/vengeful and 2) Not being the one to inform the Malfoys that their heir is gay. Plus, remember from earlier in the story, Draco's been furthering the rumors that Umbridge had started about Snape being queer. Telling him "Oh, I'm not, but thanks for asking" is not only going to disappoint Draco about the possibilities of a relationship, he's going to look like a fool for believing Umbridge. Losing face on all fronts--not a Happy Malfoy thing. In short, there are a lot of reasons for wanting to keep Draco in the dark.
Hahaha. Poor Severus. Actually no, not poor severus. Technically he's brung it on himself. This story just keeps getting more interesting.*sniggers and shakes head*
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
And everyone thought he was just going to give in with Draco...HAH! Not our Snape, the Sultan of Subterfuge.
Urgh, I don't know if I can cope with much more of this, tell that it won't go any further please, at least not so that we have to read it! It's so wrong! Apart from that, another great chapter, I love the way you do his thoughts, they do make me laugh!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yay! Well, Snape has to live with so much angst, it's good for all us readers to have to suffer through a little.
Sooo... Is Snape bisexual now, or is he just faking again? Nice chapter, btw.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Faking, of course! But utterly convincingly, as is his wont.(at least I THINK he's faking!)
I imagine Severus feels a lot like the above! Might I suggest he use a simple Obliviate? What's next? Poor old Severus has been out of the frying pan, into the fire and now seems to be hopping on hot coals. Somehow I don't think that his problems will be over until you type 'the end'.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, man, you know it. I love torturing Snape.PS. That is the PERFECT icon.
I love Snape's inner monologue as he tries to work out a resolution to this problem.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Those are the most fun parts to write, I think. Good old Snapie.
An unusual twist! ...a foolproof alibi. You must have giggled when you conceived this.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I still giggle at it, frequently.
No, no no! Please no!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That's just what Severus was thinking!
Oh mighty Severus, the master of all things lay. LMFAO this chapter was hilarious yet I cannot help but feel a great swell of pity for Draco. This kid is never going to catch a break and something tells me he's going to be screwed up for a long time.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, things aren't over yet...tomorrow's chapter may make you feel more confident about young Mr. Malfoy.
Now I understand why things came to a halt over on mnff. But I love the centaura. Cool idea. And yes I reached the same conclusion about Delores; the clues were there.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I'm glad I'm not the only uberpervert. ;) Actually several other people came to that conclusion as well. And yeah, that's what took Fair Ex off the MNFF radar, right there.
Well now that is an interesting turn of events. Can't wait to see where this one is going. JoAnne

Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yes they are--I've been sporfling all afternoon.
This is a nightmare. When Hermione gets better, will she find out Sev was busy with centaurs and Draco? So much for true love . Yuck!!!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Ah, but did he have much choice in either venture?
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Poor Severus. What a mess. I simply do not know what to think, now.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, it's not over yet...
