Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Your writing style is extremely good. Descriptions and character thoughts are so well written. You crawl right into the character and then proceed to write the scene so well.

8-) Thanks! That's what I try to do, anyway...
Wow - what a chapter. I was scared of him for a second. Hermione ran true to form holding it together and his introspection was a delight. Great work...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!
Well the 2nd chapter was interesting especially since so much time passed with neither of them realizing it... Does this set the tone for their time together. It did not sound so much of a hardship to Severus. Good work.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, if anyone can find trouble where there isn't any, it's Snape...
Loved the first chapter - very well written. I could picture the whole scene in my mind as it was playing out. The characters ran true to form in the way that they might have responded. Loved it.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Cool!
OMG! Oh Snape, this is probably not a good idea. Oh but the fun's a comin'!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Heh, Good Idea vs. What Must Be Done is what separates the Snapester from everybody else...
Thanks for the update! I was confused -- pulled up chapter 47... If you don't get your normal amount of reviews it might be that we can't find the new chapter! Please continue to slip back here when RL allows. I will be happy to keep up. Your story is quite entertaining!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! Yeah, the next couple of chapters will be out of order... I tried to leave better author's notes with instructions.
LOL - too funny. I loved his plotting mind. Great Snape portrait. The whole coy look and gay thing was hysterical.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks!
Ohh my! I do worry about what Snape will do if she decides to move on. She's clearly not ready for love and Snape, well, poor Snape just has had so much misery I hate to see him go through any more.Keep going!!! Fantastic story.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Time will tell, as they say.
very nice. A fun, pleasant chapter. I know that hell is coming. Fortunately, that's usually fun too.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks.
Oh man, poor Severus. He does love her but she's not ready. Can nothing ever go right for him? It'll all end in tears, I just know it (to quote Marvin). Go away, Marvin, you aren't helping!I love this story. It's one of the best I've read in a long time. Consistently entertaining and without tons of grammatical errors to get in my way.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying!
Oh no. Now he's gonna start that, "She's going to leave me eventually" crap again. LOL. Fortunately, Hermione is completely capable of dealing with that.I'm having more fun than humans should be allowed to have!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, my Snape tends to default to the most "logical" conclusion.
Oh I do think a Platypus is much more appropriate for Tonks.I'm still laughing about Peter's pants full of fireworks. A stroke of brilliance.I'm still reading. I'm so glad I found this again. I read so many fanfics that I sometimes lose track of stuff I've read on sites that don't have this lovely update/bookmark stuff. I will bookmark this and read it to the end whenever you happen to finish it!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
And it may be a while... but I'll get to it, I swear.
AGGGG! Ohh I do despite that Bellatrix. OMG. I hated this vow from the first moment I read about it as written by JKR. I can't wait to see what happens next, though.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Cissy will be giving Bella what's due, don't worry.
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I meant to say despise!! LOL.
oh no! I'm not looking forward to this. I also can't stop reading. LOL.For some reason the song Lawyers Guns and Money just popped into my head. It's by Warren Zevon and it's about someone getting themselves into very deep trouble and needing lawyers guns and money to get them out. Sorta reminds me of Snape a bit. Perhaps a bit too muggle but the feeling is similar.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hmm, I don't think lawyers, guns or money could help our Sev at the moment... he does manage to get into trouble, doesn't he?
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
He was left to his own devices so much and had to figure out things and learn the extremely hard way. A disaster waiting to happen. LOL.
Somehow an image of Snape in a grass skirt, drink with parasol in hand, popped into my mind. Had to shake my head to clear it.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
But was he sunburned?
LOL. Yeah, I guess Draco heard the rumors. Too funny. I love reading all the things that go through Severus' head. It's amazing Snape can form attachments given the misery of his childhood. I just can't imagine. I always look at these things from a psychology perspective. Voldemort has reactive attachment disorder. He can't form attachments to other people. His behavior makes this quite clear. Snape doesn't and neither does Harry and it surprises me. Someone must have treated them well enough between the ages of birth and 3 years that they learned to form attachments. I know, it's just a story, I should really just relax. ROFL.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*snerk* Undoubtedly reading with his head in mum's lap preserved his tender side. No wonder he gave in when Herms offered to read to him...
Oh no, hermione's name popped up! AGGG.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Exactly. Yikes Yikes.
Oh my god! Well isn't this fun! I think you have updated quite a bit since I last read this because I do NOT remember this at all. Delicious fun. I'm glad Snape has friends in the forest. I doubt Hermione would be thrilled. Still, I doubt Snape has any choice since the Centaura could easily kill him. Fascinating.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
You might have read it at MNFF--they wouldn't let me post this chapter so I just ended it there.
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I don't know if I know MNFF. I guess wizard/magical creature sex is frowned upon there. I thought it was a wonderful and funny idea. I'm not easily offended though I do think 15 is a bit young with Hermione but isn't 16 the age of consent in England or something.I did read one story, it was mostly about Snape and Molly Weasley but there was a moment between Dobby and Mrs. Norris that was hilarious as well as a little bit disturbing. Snape being disturbed over seeing it was probably the funniest part, though. I seem to remember Molly having some sort of duck fetish that required Snape to quack. Gave me quite a giggle, that story. Then I recall someone else mentioning the pairing of Hagrid and the Giant Squid which to me seems almost more plausible than Snape and Mollywobbles.
ohh, things are getting exciting now. This is a well written story. It almost doesn't feel like I'm reading because the pictures of the action are so clear in my head. I get very distracted by grammar and punctuation and repetitive words and any sort of awkward writing and often have to stop reading if something is too fully bad writing. I just can't read it. I'm not talking about the occasional typo, either. I can usually tell when that's the case. Anyway, I'm not distracted at all by the writing so I get a nice mental image of what's happening.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Cool! Thanks!

You know, you could skip way ahead, since you dislike HBP so much and say something like, "The months flew by and before anyone knew it, Severus had slain Albus."
Just a thought. No worries, I'm in it for the long haul, I'll wait. I hope someone still remembers my stories that I haven't updated in 5 months. Hmmm... should probably go look into that.
Author's Response: HAH, not a bad idea. Actually the ending of this story has already been written (years ago, actually)... but I couldn't leave Draco hanging... so to speak. Plus Herms hasn't really fully embraced this relationship either--she's still flirting with Ron.
LOL. I'm having so much fun reading this!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
8-)
wow, glad they worked that out!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, you knew they would eventually.
OUCH. This is so heartwrenching. Can't wait to read the next chapter. At least if I'm suffering insomnia I have something great to read!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Snerk, well, hope it helped you snooze.
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
It helped me relax and stop thinking about stressful stuff.

I began reading this when you first posted, and then put it aside for a while. I don't generally read stories that rehash the books, because I find it tedious. But this is so well-written, it's not even an issue. I started re-reading when this last updated hit, and what a gem I've re-discovered. Being someone who periodically gets plastered and has does most of what Severus just did. I found this chapter especially entertaining. Particularly the description of how everything was scrolling. *dives back into the next chapter.*
Author's Response: LOL, yeah, I've had the scrolling issue a few times meself.
