Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Another brill chapter. I loved the exclusive Sev/Hermi action. I wish those two could just jump eachother's bones, but the lovely fluff you write between these two more then makes up for it. Update soon, pleeeeeeease!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Fluff?? I prefer "cliff," thanks.
You did well, Pissmire. You gave what was requested without resorting to NC-17ing.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
What the heck is Pissmire?
Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
A 'Grasshopper'. Don't worry, it's not a bad thing.
awww.... Im wondering... You know he would have been stuck had you made Hermione suggest turning the lights off lol ^_^.He must have one helluva conscience and will power.good update!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
SNORK! Actually, no, because what he's really worried about is the tactile memory. Li'l Sev is far too vivid to pass off as a wish.
Awwwww... I think that sums the last line up. Hope to see more of this soon!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That greasy git can be cute when he wants to.
Yay!! He said it!! At last he thought AND he said it, and it was SO lovely (lots of big sighs going on here). The first part of the chapter was really good, even though I was mad at him for being so naughty, his thoughts and reasonings put paid to that.Poor Hermione, is she ever going to get any action, that man sure does have a will of iron!A really great chapter and a lovely surprise as I wasn't expecting another one for a while, you rock!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
that man sure does have a will of ironMore like titanium-reinforced concrete encased in platinum.
and here I thought I was going to have to scold you into re-reading HBP faster. What a surprise to have an update again, good chapter, but I sense snape is becoming a bit of a trollop, or manslut, I mean I know he is irresistable, and who wouldn't want him, but sheesh he is succombing to everyone but hermione.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That's because the only one he loves is Hermione, so he wants to save it with her for just the right time. :)
Woo hoo! The L Word! Better than sex, although it certainly could never take the place of it. I like how the thought and the "words" finally matched up. That was a nice touch. I appreciated the expository on the Centaura and Draco, as well. While I had an instinctive understanding of both, it was nice to see it laid out plainly. Well done!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! I was afraid it was a little too "tell, not show," but I really didn't want to leave any bad vibes out there about Sev's motives.
OMG OMG OMG OMG...Yes, yes, yes!! I was practically on pins and needles 'till the very last word. I almost fainted when he said it. I swear I feel like a swooning fangirl sometimes.Okay...now that I've calmed down a wee bit I wanted to tell you how much I admired the beginning of this chapter as well. His taking stock of recent events caused a tightening in my chest as my heart went out to this man yet again. His observations we funny, sad and thoughtful. I loved it!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yay! Thanks! I'm glad the chapter worked!
AWWWW!!!! <3 <3 <3!!! why cant my boy ever do somehting that sweet-- oh yea, cuz he's not Severus. jk, i love him as is!!! (just in case he reads this, I love you, Nick.) anyways, now that my name's cleared... i love those last few lines. Simply breathtaking. Wahoo!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Right on! Poor Nick--don't sweat it, no one can fill Sev's shoes... ;)
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
...or boxers...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Nnnnghmmmm. Okay, you neutralized me with that concept.*wonders about EMPTYING Sev's boxers*Back in a bit...
It's about damn time he said the "L" word! Do you realize how many times I have checked this story, waiting for the next chapter! And then you leave me hanging! GAH!!*Love's and Hugs*
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, it was definitely time.
Good girl! You've done a very nice job of expressing the differences between lust, fleeting fancy and love in this chapter. That's not an easy task.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*wags tail, sits up, rolls over*hee hee hee.
OMG I AM SO HAPPY I would'nt expect an update so fast after what you've explained about rereading HBP. And here we are. this, THIS is really too excellent and the END. I could'nt believe it when I read it. It was soooooooo sweet of him. but I have one question : What about that title "Atropos" What does that mean? I don't even know the word nor I have ever heard it before. Could you enlighten me please?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Atropos was the Crone from the three Fates in Greek Mythology. Her job was to snip the thread of life. I thought that it was a nice allusion to Snape's snipping of his thread of secrecy...
Holy Crap!? I would keel over in shock.? Does she?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Not tellin'.
Well thank Merlin for that! Though, I didn't really think you'd finish them, but you never know what you wicked writers will put us readers through.A lovely chapter, though it did feel a bit short, or is it just me being greedy? Hmm, more than likely. But what are we to do now, without our daily updates, life is so unfair! I'm sure you won't keep us waitng too long will you *sits up and begs "Please Please"*And can we have some more romance too?!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Romance is definitely next on the agenda, I just need some quiet time to write it. I'd planned on today, but shoot, I forgot, today's the day I volunteer at my son's school. I have a lunch date with a cute 9-year-old in 8 minutes. So much fer writing!
WHAT? End it? What the bloody hell does that mean?OOoo you are SO evil with your cliffies, how could you?! It's a good job the next chapter is ready and waiting for me!Despite my moaning, it was a fantastic chapters, I really enjoyed it AND it is a great cliffie!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hah. Be one with the cliffie, for it will return...
When will there be another chapter?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
As soon as I'm done writing it, I promise--I have some paid work to finish up first, but hopefully tomorrow I can get back to fanfic.
AWWWWWWW! I'm rather glad that they are still together. After the first thirty chapters of praying that they finally get together, that would have been too much to handle. That was a cute chapter though. I just can't even describe how wonderful it was. YAY! I <3 Fair Exchanges. And I ship Hermione/Severus. Although I'm a strong Ron/Hermione supporter, I'm proud to say that this story has officially turned me into a supporter of Hermione/Severus. YAY! =D
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*puffs up with pride* Ah, a new convert. I'm so proud.
Response from dancergirl117 (Reviewer)
You should be proud. This is an amazing story. =D
WHAT?! END IT ALL?! NO NO NO NO!I want them to stay together! *screams, and dies*PS >> I will be quite upset if they don't get together again in the end. But I've still one more chapter to read. *prays that they stay together*Tee Hee :]
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Gotcha!
Well, that was quite an ending! I never expected Snape to lie THAT much to get away from Draco. But, Merlin, Snape and Sirius?! Yeah, because we all know that happened....It was a nice catch though. Nice addition of comedy. So I have a question, though. How many times is he going to cheat on Hermione before she's out of the Hospital Wing? =P
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Funny how that all works out, isn't it? But doesn't it ALWAYS happen that way?
This passage made me cry:"We were not without casualties, Severus. Sirius Black is dead."For a moment, Snape felt nothing at all, perhaps because his reactions were so many and varied that at first, they cancelled one another out. Surprise, disbelief, an eerie disconcertion at Black's last words, but strangest of all, a lack of any smug satisfaction that the bastard would finally stop tormenting him. Black was my own age... younger, in some ways, robbed of so many years in Azkaban. "By whose hand, Albus?" Dumbledore squinted, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Bellatrix Lestrange.""They were blood relatives." Bella sinks deeper into the Dark Arts at every turn. Snape bowed his head out of respect for Albus, but only for a moment. "You must pardon my lack of grief on the occasion.""I grant you that pardon, Severus, however, I will not be as lenient if you torment young Harry as he mourns his godfather." Snape felt the weight of the Headmaster's gaze, and averted his eyes in acquiescence. "I may be cold, but I am not a monster, Albus," he said quietly."I was absolutely bawling. He showed respect for Sirius even though they hated each other. This was my favorite part. I liked this part too:"You and your mother saved my life, child. You will be swimming in the scent of strawberries by tomorrow morning."That part just made me awwwww....it was so cute. This was a really good chapter. Also another one I seemed to have forgotten, or you didn't post it in MNFF. Am I right in assuming that all of the following chapters, except for the final chapter and epilogue, were not posted on MNFF?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yep--all but the final 3 chapters from here on out are new.
This was another chapter that I don't remember. I loved loved loved this line "Nearly sixteen years with no action, and the night I finally get some, a political maelstrom takes place. Heh. I suppose Hell must have frozen over once and for all." I was dying when I read this one. It was brilliant. This one too: "Snape raised a single eyebrow. "I was being laid, my lord." Oh, I was in hysterics! I loved this line beyond any. This chapter was simply brilliant.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Now you see why I couldn't just skip the centaur chapter on MNFF and keep going. There was no way I was going to dump that wonderful line about being laid. No way, no how.
I definitely don't remember this part on MNFF. I guess there really was alot that you couldn't post. It's a shame, though. This was a good chapter.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yah, this was the one they said No Way, Jose, and that ended the submissions to MNFF.
~~sigh~~ no more daily chapters to look forward to ~~sigh~~ I'll babysit and even clean a bit (but no cooking) if only to get my daily fix. Please hurry and write fast (and funny)!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*snerk* Do you do windows? If you're really craving Teh Funneh, go over to my website and buy my book, dude! It's got enough snark to tide you over till Fair Ex is done, no lie. :)
Too short, Too Short, and too abruptly cut short. Sigh. What dunderheads these authors be!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Sigh. I feel like I've put them through too much to air their private endearments in public. What can I say?
