Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Another Wow! chapter--great stuff! I like the way you made them work together, even though their assumptions and guesses were wrong, and how it really was Sirius' arrogance and pride (i.e. unwillingness to be told what to do) that led to his death. Well done.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks--I hoped people wouldn't find it too presumptuous for me to explain Canon in this way, particularly since it's not very kind to Sirius (although Snape was acting like a big brat, too).
Wow, you've been busy! Nice tie into book 6 there. Hermione is infantile, frankly. I cannot warm up to her at all in this story.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
! Ouch! I hope that's not necessarily a bad thing, but that wasn't how I was trying to portray her.
Oooh, somehow I don't think Severus is going to be a happy chap in the next chapter, however much he wouldn't mind Sirius waltzing through the veil. More please!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Heh, funny you should mention it, the next chapter is the one I couldn't post at the previous site I used, because it was too lewd.
Cute little owl! ^.^
I love it so far, and Hermione's problems are so understandable, seeing what we all have to face each day in the media...
Can't wait for the next part!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That was my little soapboxy sub point. :)
That is a cute little owl.?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Cute enough to give Snape nightmares.
Ummmmm. Wonder what I wrote before... Must think of something original... I could just go generic. "Nice chapter, Please update"... Nah. I could be technical... dangling participials, ampersands, en, em and two-em dashes, but that's like school and no fun at allperiod
OK, so how did you pick a Rufous Scops from the tropics? In Hogsmeade! Got an owl fetish? Birdwatcher? Birdbrain ... oh, that's not nice... Sometimes being at a loss for words is not a bad thing.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Did I dangle a participle? Oopsie! I try to be ladylike...Well, I was flipping through Canon and saw a mention that the Hogsmeade post office had Scops owls for local deliveries only...so I went online and looked up Scopses. The Rufous was one of the most designer-looking owls I'd ever seen, so I just had to have it. Only the best for Snape.
I am absolutely beside myself over that owl! Magnificent!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I know, I'm crazy about him too. You should look up a picture of that species, they're just too precious.
Response from jenonymous (Reviewer)
I had a time finding a photo but you're right: too precious! I can just see him in Snape's sleeve!
HAhaha aww cute. for some reason the owl reminds me of pig.Havent read a story like this before but im really enjoying reading it. Their whole confessions of caring and love seem a tad fast though but its your story and its a good one ^_^
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
He is a little like Pig, but less of a spaz, more sneaky. I don't see Pig being able to keep it together long enough to cut a deal like that, for example--he'd either go flap-happy and wake everyone up trying to deliver it, or be too paranoid about getting caught to break the rules...
Response from CinnamonMonty (Reviewer)
So the Slytherin version of Pig instead of the plain lil old lil Gryffindor him? ;)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
!! Precisely! The Slyth Pig. Slythwidgeon, if you will. Perfect. Now he has a name, even though I just can't see Snape ever using that one...
I'm torn between the hilarity and the sensuality of Severus asking Hermoine to 'stir the soup' as you put it. That made me giggle. I don't know where you come up with some of these phrases, but they crack me up. Nice chapter, the way you had Sev helping Hermi with her problem was somewhere between cute and so funny.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*bows* That's exactly what I was shooting for. I see Snape as someone with an exquisite sense of humor, which most people (*koff, koff, Harry*) are too dull to appreciate, and that his life has been so filled with irony that he is laughing at most of it (inside, where it counts, of course).
Poor Hermione, what a terrible fear to have gnawing away at your subconscious.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
No doubt! It's a good thing Snape was there!
Awww the little owl sounds very sweet.
I have a feeling your next few chapters will be quite interesting. waiting for more.
Happy New Year!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That owl has rapidly become my favorite original character. He's a total dork.
Response from pickles (Reviewer)
lol
So damned ethical! Poor guy walked all over Hogwarts? Wasn't even tempted to peek?? Bet he didn't allow the house-elves to change the sheets though ;)"Snape nearly doodled a heart at the bottom of the note" *giggles* I'm so glad he didn't! I don't think I would recognise the guy, is this the same sarcastic bastard we know & love?just kidding, keep up the great work (& constant updates)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I think he knew better than to subject himself to the agony of peeking. Snape only tortures himself so much, after all.
i love cryptic messages...the whole snape almost putting a hear there thing was really sweet. <3. i love how he's looking out for her.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
A fool for love...sorta.
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
a heart, i mean not a hear
Go to my room, Hermione. Touch your body the way I long to touch you.
After that statement, I don't think she'll find it too hard to complete her "homework." And that the black-haired wizard she dreams about this time won't have green eyes!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, I think after tonight she's going to have a different sort of dream altogether.
Aaahhh! Severus has such a gentle soul. He must be a really good Head of House if he handles all his charges with such sensitivity. Poor Herms, I liked how you showed her insecurity & vulnerability without her losing her defiant & bossy side. I do hope she didn't go "all the way" with Victor, I'm sure our Severus could show her a much better time!On a sidenote, we don't have "zucchinis" in the UK, they're called "courgettes" here
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
AAACK! Thanks for the Britpicking. Sheesh, no chipmunks, no zucchini...how do you people survive? *wink*You know, that's a good point, maybe old Snapie has picked up a bit of insight into adolescent behavior doing the HoH thing. It might not be too far OOC for him to be handling Hermione so well. Cool!
you just had to leave it there! I can't wait for the next installment! so do hurry LOL.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
It's a bad habit I have.
i think this is my favorite chapter.
i don't think he will want to leave his chambers after she leaves her scent.
i'm sure he will have a few dreams of his own.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* I think you've nailed it.
Response from pickles (Reviewer)
Nah...
I think he wants to nail it...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
BWAHAHAHA!
Wow! You know, for a cruel bastard, he was uncommonly sensitive. As usual, I can hardly wait for the next chapter!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I think part of the reason he's so good at cruelty is because he's experienced so much of it himself. He just doesn't want to waste all those hard lessons on the unworthy.
I had this bit all written out, previous to this, and it didn't upload, so have taken it as a sign that it's better left unsaid.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hmph. Don't let the fickle moods of the computer dictate your actions!
Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
Oh no... not me. Not going to get me to fly in the face of the Fates. Normally I would not let a little thing like a electrical glitch get in my way, and heaven forbid anything stopper my mouth but my own foot.
But the Fates!! Now that is serious business. Really! Believe me, I have been saved from some horrible faux pas via a gift from the gods. If there is one thing I am sure of it is the Myteries of the Universe. You just don't mess with stuff like that. A failed upload is a True Sign! {Besides, I forget what I wrote...}
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle!*
Sigh. There is nothing that I can say that won't end up sounding totally pathetic about this specific male fictional character. Which actually ends up sounding rather pathetic anyhow.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*scratches her pointy head* Well, you can say anything you want in here, I don't mind.
Aww, it would have been more interesting if she would have protested and he would have had to join her! Well hopefully I, I mean, She won't have to wait much longer before he joins her in the bedroom himself. Thanks for the quick updates. I can't wait to get to the computer at night!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hee hee! Patience, grasshopper! He's not ready for that yet, but strange times are looming in the near future.
ow ow!!! nice severus. very slytherin of you--make it seem like its for her own good, but really be getting visual pleasure too. Love it!!!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*snerk* Now now, he's going out for a walk, not sneaking into some passage within the walls to peek out from a hidden peephole! (although he's going to wish he'd thought of that in about half an hour).
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
awww.... poor severus. better luck next time!
Okkaaay! That was entirely unexpected. Not sure how to interpret it, and I'm a psychiatrist!...well, maybe I have some ideas, but I'll wait to hear your version (bows)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*sporfle* Well, I have a few ideas too...and fortunately, since I call all the shots in my story, I get to be 100% right! *sinister laugh*
Oi! It's terribly hard to wait for the next chapter... hurry please!! thanks! :-)?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
It'll come--I have to pace myself a little so I can write a few more.
