Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

Just got caught up and I enjoyed the many chapters :) Thank you for writing and I look forward to more soon.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
My pleasure!
excellent chapters. thank you for wonderful updates.
hey hubby has started reading this. I'm not sure how far he has progressed or if he's left reviews. if he does he's known as medicdaddy.
waiting for more.
Response from pickles (Reviewer)
Hubby says you must have had some "male" assistance (sp?). Because some of the excuse that Snape has used at the beginning would definitely be something that a guy would think of. Especially between Umbridge and Draco...
He laughed quite a bit.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hee hee. Well, I'm glad to have another happy reader, but Hubby's wrong--that all came from my widdle brain. It just goes to show you, snide knows no boundaries.
WOW! What a story! Just sat through the entire thing today and i'm impressed with most of it. The only little qualm that I have, concerns Hermione's age at this point. She's a bit young to be having a 'relationship' with a 36 year old man.... but I"m pretending that she's 17 for arguments sake. Still young, but at least she's 'of age'.Apart from that, the story is well written and historically correct. Good job!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, that part does get a little squicky--but she has a September birthday, so she's one of the oldest students in her class...
you're a so surprising person and I like that. after telling evryone that there won't be the next until you've re-read HBP you offered us two brilliant chapters. thanks for this and continue to surprise us as much as you wish it
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, the warning still stands, I just happened to get some fast inspiration and some time.
Such beautiful, brilliant chapter - a strange mixture of both fun and deep sadness, f.ex.: "Snape had been sunburned once: it had developed on his nose during a particularly long Quidditch practice. The pain was accompanied by constant comments about "burns on 50 percent of his body" - and: "Never before with Albus had it been so utterly necessary to keep his thoughts and physiology under tight control, for the Dark Lord would naturally be quite curious about this conversation." - not even in this situation is he allowed to react and speak freely. Very, very sad. Very plausible. And very, very well written!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! :) More to come...
Wow! Impressive tie-in to HBP! I bow to the mistress.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That's only the beginning...
How nice of Albus to give Severus busy-work so that he did not have to spend time with the odious rat. And an interesting perspective on the need-to-know-about-Horcruxes angle. (Don't know why it struck me so fresh, but it did. Perhaps the capitals.) I think the owl--which is growing on him like a fungus, should be named Porcini, or perhaps Shiitake (because then Severus could call him a little Shiit).
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Someone else suggested that he's sort of the Slytherin version of Pigwidgeon (all the spaz but not as clueless) so Slythwidgeon might make a nice name. I originally had Snape refer to him as "the flapping turd" but it didn't seem affectionate enough. I have to agree, Little Shiit is perfect.
Excellent, though I am disappointed that Severus didn't heal Dumble's Horcrux curse, but I agree that 's the best way to keep him (SS) from finding out about them.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, I think that's a sacrifice Dumbles had to accept--he couldn't risk Snape breaking that news to Voldy.
Fascinating! I rather like your insinuation that when AD offered SS the Defense position, that it indicated that SS knew then that he’d be going back to LV fulltime.
I’ve only read HBP once, and raced through it to find out who, when, why and whatever … think it’s almost time to read it again.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I got more out of it the 2nd time thru--and with Deathly Hallows imminent, now's a good time.
Oooh, I really like your theory of why Dumbledore continually put Snape off of the DADA position. Very clever, indeed!
And "constant comments about "burns on 50 percent of his body,'" -- hilarious!
I'm excited every time you post a new chapter. I love this story!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hey, Dumbles ain't dumb. He needed Snape around, and that DADA job is a one way ticket out.
And so it begins. As an avid, no, make that total believer in Severus Snape's innocence and honor, I dread seeing the allusion to HBP. You know, I have never read the book? And I have no wish to do so; I've heard enough.
I loved the last chapter, and I think that this chapter is a great transition. I hope that Severus and Hermione have a chance to connect somehow during the summer. Summer always seemed so long.....
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, the timeline of HBP indicates that Herms goes to the Burrow around July 12 or so and hangs with Harry and Ron the rest of the summer--and the term ended about June 21. So alas, there won't be time for a rendez-vous--but September's not too far off.
I knew you'd work the ol' giant squid in somehow, although it had better only be after Severus's food. Interesting way of giving notice about making Severus redundant! "I want you to teach D.A.D.A. this year."Is it too much to hope for more on a daily basis?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
WAY too much to hope. But I have part of the next chapter written already, and a few more future ones as well, so posting will be irregular at best.
Ooh, what a naughty little chapter... but so well written! I enjoyed it immensely, especially this line - "... causing all manner of ripples and bounces about her person..."Looking forward to more! Peace, and Happy New Year! ~ j
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
You too!
Now that was unexpected!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, it gets downright surreal for the next 5 chapters or so. This is kind of Snape's version of the tv show "24."
Dang! I did NOT see that one coming! It rather boggles the imagination. And I'm pretty sure this is a non-canon interpretation of Toadmistress and the Centaurs, though I admit it's a much more interesting one. The verbal teasing was well written--it all is, of course, but this was particularly enjoyable to me. Well done!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, you know, from the first time I read OOTP, I just automatically guessed that the stallions socked it to Umbridge--just the way they carried her off and then she wouldn't talk about it the next day... it just seemed obvious to me. I mean, what ELSE would they do that wouldn't leave a mark and would get leaves and grass mashed up into her hair? Go read it again, you'll see what I mean.
Oh my, Severus is in a predicament indeed. But oddly enough, an very interesting one.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I think that's exactly what he believes, as well.
I haven't read this on the other website. How is Severus going to get out of this? This flirtation was very funny to read, but I dread what they want to do to Severus.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Well, you know Snape. He'll always do What Must Be Done...
I love those mares they were so cool. I hope they will make a reappearance in your story in the future! ;p I am anxious to find out just what Sev's going to do about the attentions of those fiesty fillies. I hope he finds a way to keep it in his pants for Hermi's sakes but it is in your capable hands. Both of us our at your mercy for the update to decide what shall happen!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*laughs* Well, I only write it as I see it in my evul little brain... tomorrow's another chapter.
OH YIKES!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Dear Santa, I want some cowboy boots and a whip for X-mas. Love, Severus.*hee hee hee*
Response from pickles (Reviewer)
lol
Not sure what I think of a fivesome, let alone one involving centauras. I somehow doubt Hermione would like it, particularly as it involves Severus. Maybe there won't be any trouble as you did mention what teases the centauras are, but if clothes are coming off... I see trouble coming, of the something-Hermione-musn't-know-but-will-find-out-somehow variety.More please!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, I don't think Herms would approve either--but then again, Snape is He Who Unflinchingly Does What Must Be Done In Any Circumstance...so she better get used to the idea.
ooohhh another wonderful chapter.
won't he be a bit miffed when he founds out the students mode of transportation.
waiting for more.
HAPPY NEW YEAR SWEETS!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
And also to you!
It is most interesting to speculate about what Snape was doing during this time. Your answer to his whereabouts in this chapter makes a great deal of sense to me... but then I am all for Snape.
What I haven't seen mentioned in reference to this portion of 'Life with Harry' is, where did Albus go and just what was he up to during all this. Vacation in Tahiti???
Too much effort was put into 'maintaining' the war so Harry could grow up and do away with the bad man. Too much faith was placed in the prophecy and not enough action by the adults to do away with some of the opposition. If the Order had more than one spy, like Fudge said, then why were they always a step behind, stamping out already lit fires instead of setting the firebreaks ahead... just mumbling aloud...
Oh, nice chapter, please update!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Tough questions--but then again, it's SO hard to know just how much Bad Stuff was prevented or pre-empted or otherwise nipped in the bud by the actions of the Order (that's something I'm hoping to expand on a little in "my" Book Seven, actually, along with a million other things). The books are about Harry, obviously, so we don't get to hear all the stealthy, Jack Bauer-esque goings-on that the adults are doing. As for Albus...I assume he was out sniffing for Horcruxes--interviewing senile house-elves and that sort of thing, not to mention trying not to get thrown in jail. Although Tahiti would be nice that time of year...
hahaha! So the centaurs raped Umbrige? No wonder she freaked out when Ron made the clip-clop noise! Love the story, I've waited like FOREVER for this chappie to come out(I'm from Mugglenet). Can't wait for 25!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I always thought that was the between-the-lines meaning of Umbridge being carried off by the males... And as you said, the clop-clop noise freaking her out.
Oh that was good! I was getting anxious as I kept reading more of the chapter even though I've read it all before in OotP. And that bit in Umbridge's office about outing Snape for supposedly being a fairy was priceless! It totally fits! Oh I cannot wait for the next chapter!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yah, the "outing" was fun--that came to me late, and I had to go back and edit the original chapter to throw that in. But you KNOW she'd try it!
I absolutely love this story. The line "fell into the kiss like a man stepping off a skyscraper" has got to be one of the most interesting descriptions I've ever read. You have a really unique writing style.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks! I was kinda proud of that one, it just had all the right tones of finality and desperation.
