Hermione wants to learn Occlumency, but Severus Snape is not known for his generous nature. Both may learn more than they bargained for before the tale ends.
This is canon-compliant with books 5 and 6 and provides a behind-the-scenes story that JKR never even guessed...

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

*bows* Thanks!
After reading the first chapter, I was a bit as leary as Snape with the bed time reading. Now, however, I'm glad I read on. The story is coming along nicely! I like how its parallel to Order of the Phoenix.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, a lot of people react that way, but once you make it past that initial suspension of disbelief, it gets rolling...
Really enjoying this story - somehow the thought of Severus being read to is very appealing. Perhaps it's the touch of vulnerability it suggests at something like a bedtime story frightening away his ghosts, just like when I was a kid as well. I like how you are characterising Hermione and Severus in this, and I'm very much looking forwards to the next chapters.

You have a very nice style, very fluent. a joy to read ;)
Looking forward to the next chapter

And there's the dark Snape we all know and love. I'm glad he feels guilty about it, somewhat. Kudos to her for being strong enough to stay. I'm afraid I would have done something foolish like trying to hex him. :)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*grins* Yeah, well, she wants something from him, doesn't she? And I had a lot of little ideas in mind for this story, one of which is this sort of irony that despite Snape's age, he's so stunted in his personal growth that Hermione has the upper hand in the field of "getting along with others." So she's sort of guiding this ship (and 'ship) and he's being overwhelmed by knowledge that he should have learned 20 years ago--sort of an Erik Erikson developmental model. They're such a fun couple to play with!
Bwahahahaha! You know this story is just as funny to read the second time around.Poor Snape. Man never can get a break.

Ain't it the truth. If I ever get around to finishing it, things are just going to get worse.
Is there a centaur named Hermione? Now I'm even more confused!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
No, no--it's just that her name has become irretrievably linked to sexiness, and the memories of the centaura sort of naturally drew her name along as Voldy examined them. Which is of course exactly why Snape has been fighting this whole relationship all along.
What's up with the question mark?He felt sudden tension snap throughout her entire body, which was not unpleasant in the slightest, but fortunately (?), she reared back to look him in the eye. "Well?" she demanded. Is it a holdover from a line of thought you didn't follow? Something the beta said? It just makes me (as a reader) crazy with curiosity! It also calls attention to the strange choice of words: but fortunately, she …
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Oh, no--it's deliberate. Just another manifestation of his kind of desperate misgivings about the situation. He knows she should just flounce out of the room and out of his life, but he doesn't want her to... so when she gives him a chance to apologize, he's both glad and sorry.
Oh. Ouch. You may say that she's the emotionally mature one here, but she's way out of her league.Very tense. I think this is a good climax to follow his realization of her feelings and fears for his safety. Poor girl.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
In terms of wickedness, she's definitely met more than her match. But I think she's got a few points on him in other areas.
Oh this is delightfully funny. Thanks for showing off the Spy Snape Skills:"I'm afraid..." Snape bowed his head and attempted a nervous giggle, then fixed her gaze. "It's just that you look so seductive, but I'm not, ah, that is, I don't exactly..."and, well, Severus' intimation at the end is really pricelss! Thanks for going there!I love this: It is proof that we live in a divine universe, that such opportunities arise when they are so desperately needed.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Yeah, a couple people have commented that they really liked that line. Somehow I don't think Snape honestly believes that, but at the moment, he probably did.
What book did she read at the end of the chapter?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
That was "The Reivers" by William Faulkner.
Oh My GOD! OMG! i mean... for fucks sake it is hilariuos.. in a ironic, sarcastic and completely insane way. WHAT other story have Severus Snape ending up telling draco malfoy that he had a gay relationship with sirius black, and all because he really didn't want to fuck the toad. I mean, you are brilliant! i don't think anybody could have found a more... logical and reasonable way for that to happen (the telling) than that. OMG, absolutely brilliant. I hail you.

LOL! *bows*
Can't wait for more. Riveting. Love your sense of humour.Chased this all the way from Mugglenet to read what did not get on there. Truly fab. Haven't laughed so much at anything in months. You give me the strength to possibly post a story of my own. Keep writing. You're superb.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
awwwww... (blush) Thanks! I have only 2 more chapters of Heirs to write (and 6 to refine) and it'll be done...and I can get back to poor Severus.
oh dears...say, would you like my Kinna? He's kind of a slytherin and he's fabulous as all get-out ^.^ he's got this snakey thing going on and he's awfully cute...good for sending to Dracos who need to be dealt with carefully ~nods more~woot! can't wait for the next chapter!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Hee hee, well, I'm all for fabulous Slytherins, but I already have distinct plans for this Draco (and he's not going to like them, is he, precious?). If only I could fiind the time to get them beyond the outline stage... Well a long cold rainy winter is coming up, that will help get the ball rolling.

Awwwww... thanks! I only have a few more chapters of Heirs and it'll be done, and I can get back to my dearest Sev.
Ah, now this version of Snape being forced to kill Dumbledore makes so much more SENSE than Dumbledore asking him to be killed!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
Thanks--I like the idea of him being railroaded into it. too.

I second Teddybear's begging! I can't wait to see what happens next in this one. Great story! :-) Please? Please? Please? (But I can understand life getting in the way.)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
I really do have it all planned out, I just need a few peaceful days when I"m not otherwise exhausted. Someday...
Oh wow....I agree with what someone else said- I would've left you a review before, but I couldn't stop reading. I love your writing style and the way you capture Severus. It's one of the most in-character fics of him I've read, actually. Job very well done. First I thought this last bit was a really disappointing turn of events, but then I read the end again and I got it. :) When you update...will you pick up exactly where you've left off? Or do we have to fill it in ourselves? heehee I can't wait to read the rest of your story.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)
*snort* My plan is to continue sometime later, but who knows... we'll see where the muse takes me when I finally have time to write it.
I love your writing style and stories. Love. Please hurry up with the postings. I'm getting anxious.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Fair Exchanges)

They did! You just have to use your imagination!

I hope to resume writing sometime soon, but I'm kinda recovering from "Heirs" at the mo. I still have plenty of story in me, I just really got tired out with Heirs.
