Severus Snape’s life was changed when he was hit by an errant spell, and he comes to a decision that defies Dumbledore’s wishes. Even the fate of the wizarding world is altered by this one ill-cast curse and Snape’s subsequent resolve. Long after the spell itself has dissipated, its effects continue echoing in the lives of Severus, Albus, Minerva, and Hermione, and they bring with them a shadowy figure whom Snape does not trust and whose motivations and influence on Minerva are murky. Conspiracies and schemes swirl around Severus as he continues on his path of deception to his final confrontation with the Dark Lord.

Reviews for Death's Dominion
Good balance with Hermione's POV on the Shrieking Shack scene in this one. I'm not sure I understand what is to happen with Harry, but I am sure it will be explained in due course.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Thank you! As Harry is still not clear what is to happen with Harry, you're not alone! But it will become clear. Thanks for the review!

This was a fantastic chapter and so much happens. Wow! Where on earth do I start with a review???I'm glad Minerva confided in Hermione about what happened between Snape, Minerva, and Albus. I'm sure that helped her to understand more about what is coming with the final battle and to be better prepared.
The flashback to the scene where Melina cast the Celebrare spell on Minerva and the subsequent actions that followed was very well done. The descriptions of the colors and how they, both the colors and ADMM, related to each other were very vivid!! I'm glad Minerva went against Albus' wishes and drove the curse from his body, despite his objections.
While I'm not a fan of Scrimgeour, I did feel a tug at my heartstrings when he sent the message home to his wife. That was such a "normal" thing to do and lends a more very human touch to your characters that is unmatched.
The scene with Voldy, Snape, Nagini, Robbie, and Hermione was so intense. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat reading quickly to find out what happend next. I can only imagine that the next chapter is even more intense.
Looking forward to the next update!!!!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the bit with Scrimgeour. I'm not a fan, either, but I think he's flawed rather than evil. (You may remember that I put him in RaM in some of the early chapters, and in those, he was a cocky, arrogant, and ambitious young Auror, but he was also pretty sharp.)The scene with Hermione and Robbie looking on as Voldy and Severus have their final confrontation was a challenge, since we have already seen it from Severus's p.o.v., but Hermione has no idea what was going to happen next. I hope you find the next chapter at least as intense! Thanks for reviewing!

I was so excited to see that there was an update. You didn't disappoint - this chapter was fantastic! I particularly liked the way you led us into believing we were going to discover "Robbie's" secret when Minerva took Poppy to the Heart, but then didn't give it away. That was masterfully written. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Thank you! I'm very glad you liked it! Poppy was a little surprised, wasn't she?

Oh you wicked, wicked thing! Not for the cliffie, but for holding onto the 'hint-hint', still. You eeked out a few more hints and then when Poppy ... I thought for sure, finally, you were going to let it out of the bag. Well, you did, but only to Poppy!!You force me into looking forward to the next chapter to see how it all plays out! [Well, not forced, I shall be here willingly.]
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
LOL! I'm glad you'll be here willingly!I do so love being wicked! haha! But the hints have been getting broader and more obvious, especially in this chapter. I just know that you enjoy being tantalized. haha!Thank you for the review! I hope that you enjoy the next chapter, too!

*Sniff, Sniff* This is so wonderful, the way they have honoured Severus throughout the awards. The fact that he was tuning it out at the end is so undeniably him, LOL.And though I am a bit teary-eyed at the outcome, I am glad I finally made the time to read this this morning.Btw, I love the subtle hints at his feelings for Hermione, too. Yay! Only one more to go. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!~Stef
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm glad you were able to find the time, too, and that you enjoyed it! I hope that it was a nice break from RL for you.Yes, Severus didn't really see it coming, any of it, from Neville to Blaise to Harry, and it's a good thing Poppy was sitting next to him maintaining his attention for him! haha! But yes, he definitely got some recognition, which he appreciates even though his feelings are so ambivalent.Thank you for reviewing! I hope you enjoy the epilogue!-MMADfan
I must admit that your story is different from the kinds of fanfictions I usually commence on, especially in terms of complexity of backstory, style of writing and focus, but I've enjoyed the read. I especially want to commend the ending. It succeeded where the canon ending did not - it gave me chills and tears in my eyes, and as such deserves praise. For a fan of Snape and a believer that Slytherins in general were not well-treated in canon, it's lovely to find refuge in fandom and see alternatives showing what could (and perhaps should) have been. Thank you for your story.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Thank you very much. I'm very glad that you enjoyed it. It is a rather complex story, but I'm glad that you found it worth the attention and liked it so much.I'm especially glad that you enjoyed the ending. I found DH dissatisfying on many levels, including the ones that you point out, and it's good to hear that you found Death's Dominion both affecting and effective.Thank you very much for your review!
Like Aberforth, I did suspect something with "Robbie" and a certain "dead" wizard - though, you did so well, and had me second guessing my suspicions. I love this story and do hope that you update with another chapter soon!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Thank you! I'm grinning here! I'm very glad both that you had suspicions and that you were second-guessing them. I'm glad you're enjoying the story so much. I'll try to update as soon as I can. Thanks for reviewing!

One (dis)advantage of not having time to review straight away is that everyone else has already said what I would have said, so my review can be very short. I heartily echo evreything said elsewhere. The goodbyes to Hermione and Minrva were especially touching--and Poppy too. Hermione seemed to be more revealing of her feelings than one might have expected....sitting in the backyard w/ wine after having met her parents? That can be read in so many different ways! Severus's concern for his House was also quite touching. I hope Minerva is successful in protecting them. Interesting that he begs her to lock them up, rather than arguing that some of them should be allowed to show that Slytherins aren't all bad. Very realistic--even though he knows there are good ones amongst them, he knows the risk can't be taken. It will be interesting to watch Severus have to keep his promise re forgiveness of Minerva if/as he lives... Severus has come SO far in this story. I think you have definitely met your objective in that regard, no matter what happens in the remaining chapters and sequel. And the reveal to Poppy--oh my! Poor witch! She and Severus can commiserate about having been left in the dark so long after it is all over....I do hope that Robbie's skin hasn't suffered for all those patches being applied. A patch a day for almost 18 mos....his poor hips! Severus's final scene....hanky time for me too. His vision of "friendly death" in a sea of stars, immediately brought to mind, in addition to a certain tall blue-eyed wizard wearing beloved robes, St Francis of Assisi's Canticle of Brother Sun and the hymn derived from it, "All Creatures of our God and King," with its praise of "gentle Death." Was that lurking in the back of your mind as you wrote that bit, MMADfan? And then coincidentally just 50 mins after reading the chapter I was singing that very hymn in church. For those who don't know it....this is the version in the Episcopal hymnal:"All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voices, let us sing, 'Alleluia, Alleluia.' Bright burning sun with golden beams, pale silver moon that gently gleams, O praise Him, O praise Him, alleluia......[several verses describing the praise arising from other parts of creation] ...All you that pain and sorrow bear, praise God and cast on him your care. And even you, most gentle Death, waiting to hush our final breath, O praise Him, Alleluia. You lead back home the child of God, for Christ the Lord that way has trod. O praise Him..."I know that wizards aren't generally big on Christianity, but Severus could also perhaps stand to do some reflection on George Herbert's poem "Love," which was the anthem yesterday. Not that either Hermione or Minerva or Robbie or Albus are Christ-figures (!) (though Albus certainly is in canon, at least in HBP, no matter what was done to him in that later book of which we *shall not speak*), but Severus does seem to have a problem understanding himself as worthy of love and kindness, and I think could relate to Herbert's plight in this poem: - - - - -Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back, guiltie of dust and sinne. But quick-eyed Love observing me grow slack from my first entrance in, drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning, if I lacked anything.'A guest,' I answer'd, 'worthy to be here.' Love said, 'You shall be he.' 'I, the unkinde, ungratefull? Ah, my deare, I cannot look on thee.'Love took my hand and smiling did reply, 'Who made the eyes but I?' 'Truth, Lord but I have marr'd them: let my shame go where it doth deserve.' 'And know you not,' sayes Love, 'who bore the blame?' 'My deare, then I will serve.' 'You must sit down,' sayes Love, 'and taste my meat.' So I did sit and eat.- - - - -Hopefully Severus will be able to sit and eat with his many *friends and loved ones* before the end of this story! And then maybe spend some time alone w/ Hermione!

"I do hope that Robbie's skin hasn't suffered for all those patches being applied. A patch a day for almost 18 mos....his poor hips!"Hips, tummy, lower back, they moved around. His vision of "friendly death" in a sea of stars, immediately brought to mind ... St Francis of Assisi's Canticle of Brother Sun -- I prefer the original version, myself; it's simpler and more elegant, IMO, but I am also acquainted with the hymn you quote, though I'd actually forgotten its existence. I wasn't thinking of it, but it is coincidentally a piece of poetry that I'm fond of. I love the references to all the different "brothers" and "sisters" in creation. It certainly is beautiful and moving in either version, and if the scene with Severus was evocotive of it, I could not have striven to do better than that. I am glad you found it moving. The Herbert poem is interesting -- love is forgiveness, and partaking of love is the same as partaking of forgiveness. Of course, Herbert equates love & God, too . . . but that's off on a tangent, isn't it? A bit of a brain holiday!I am glad that you enjoyed the chapter so much, and the journey that Severus has taken. Thank you for reviewing!

I'm glad Robbie's hips didn't suffer too much! As for interpreting the Herbert poem, he was an Anglican parish priest, as well as poet (those Welsh poets strike again!), so yes, he equates Love and God. And it's also strongly Eucharistic. I won't digress more here..... I also noticed Poppy picking up that object--in a chapter where you go a long way towards resolving several mysteries, you then insert a new one!

"I also noticed Poppy picking up that object--in a chapter where you go a long way towards resolving several mysteries, you then insert a new one! "Of course! I have to make sure that there's at least a few mysteries left for you to puzzle over! (There was a hint that's related to that back in the last chapter, something Robbie said.)
Response from esoterica1693 (Reviewer)
Oh, I forgot to say before...I must say that Poppy & Minerva's exchange after Minerva "showed her something" was excellent--one of the gems in a richly-jeweled diadem of a chapter! "Don't you think it's a little late in life for you to begin developing a flair for the dramatic?" "I have always had a flair for the dramatic." ROTFL!! GREAT lines!

There are so many well done parts of this story that I hardly know where to begin. You wrote the madness of Voldemort so well that I felt as sickened and disgusted as Snape might have.I do really enjoy the tantilizing hints of what is coming. It is nice to be given clues and then wait to see if my conjectures hold true. I have sincerely enjoyed the way you have manuevered the final battle into being and your version of the way things are to unfold.I look forward to the next update a tremendous amount.

Thank you very much! I'm so pleased that you've enjoyed it so much. I am especially glad that you've enjoyed the clues and the bit of mystery; you'll probably enjoy seeing how it all works out. I'm glad that you found Voldemort's madness so . . . sickening? That doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean!I hope that the next few chapters continue to satisfy and entertain you!Thank you for reviewing! I'll be working hard on the next update. Hopefully, it won't be as long between updates as it was this last time, since I don't have any travel planned.

Voldemort and the tomb: wonderfully written and dreadful to read. I think - no, that's enough said. Ah-ha: I think the plan and the plot have finally come together.... It will be quite nice to hear how everything was managed and to know Robbie's background better (you're littering new clues everywhere, haha). It was so nice of Minerva to tell Poppy before she needed to know - hopefully, it eases the hurt she felt from Minerva's secrecy. It is good to see Severus' betrayal at last. And, he burned his robes, a lovely gesture. Hermione's medical tutorial paid off, I think; his vision of death seems almost pleasant. Thank you so much for updating!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
"you're littering new clues everywhere, haha"Yup, they're being scattered all over the place now!One of the lines that I cut from that scene had Poppy telling Minerva that she would wait and be angry with her later. But she does have a lot of mixed emotions, as will many others. As Melina said to Minerva way back in the beginning of their plan, a lot of people will be upset when it's over. Even if they're also happy.I'm glad you liked the tomb scene. I tried to hit just the right note with it and not "overplay" the potential gory aspects, but while still describing what occurred and how it affected Severus. So I'm glad that you found it dreadful to read. (Hm, that sounds strange. But true! haha)It was satisfying to have Severus have at least a little chance to wave his betrayal in Riddle's face.Thank you for reviewing! I'm very glad you liked the chapter!

It is so brilliant to see everything beginning to pay off. Great hints with the patch and capsule; great ways a potion could be administered unobtrusively.Goodness, Severus wishing he'd have time to come to love Hermione gave me a shiver.Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing Severus' goodbye to Hermione; guh, it's so wonderful! Hermione describing the scene and Severus wishing for one moment he could just take her away--awesome! This Severus has something to live for! For the first time, his 'we will' held a bit of optimism. It's madly wonderful that all we know so far is Severus' POV, but also I have faith that Hermione was no hallucination. I can't think of a single way this chapter could have been better. It's so late at night that I can't even wish it were longer, but I will be quite happy when there is more :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed Severus's good-bye to Hermione; realising that he had so often lost or rejected the opportunities in his life for connections with people was important for him, and his willingness to risk looking like a fool and be emotionally vulnerable let him exercise a different kind of bravery. The patch and the capsule: it's handy having a wizard in the family who decided to follow in his Muggle father's footsteps and become a chemist rather than an apothecary, isn't it? I'm glad you like the chapter so well! I labored over it! I hope there will be another chapter up soon. Thanks again for your review!

Wiping eyes and looking for a box of tissues. He was so terribly sad and brave. I wanted to sit with him and just hold his hand while he was waiting for the summons.Poppy's lucky she didn't have heart failure. Now the plan comes together and two battles being fought. Oh it has been so long since you updated and what a glorious update. What will Severus think when he finds he is not dead and not hallucinating, but instead Hermione provided him with life's breath. What an intimate thought to breath for the one you love for I know she loves him.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Yes, it was a long wait for this chapter, I know; I'm glad you thought it was glorious!Breathing for someone you love certainly is an intimate act. I am glad you appreciated it.Thanks for the review! With any luck, the next chapter won't be so long in coming.

Oh goody! You usually update quite rapidly, especially considering the length of your chapters!Just sent a fic rec to one of my LJ friends for this story and An Act of Love. If Beffeysue picks up reading these you will have reviews from her that read like one-shots themselves she is fabulous with her reviews!

I do try to update as quickly as I practically can, given RL, proofreading/betaing, polishing, etc., and without posting something that I am not happy with, so I'm glad that you appreciate the update frequency! With a complex story like this one, I also need to make sure I get the chapter "right" and I won't be kicking myself when some future chapter ends up having some problem because of some omission in an earlier chapter, or because of some structural hitch that I hadn't realized would be there. It took me a long time to figure out how best to structure this chapter and the next one; once I was happy with my solution, this chapter was easier to finish. Of course, I also sweated over the pacing and flow of the chapter, and I reworked the last section over a few times until I liked it.Anyway, glad it was worth the wait for you! Thanks for the fic reccy! I hope your friend enjoys the stories.

Whoah. This was heart-breaking stuff. Poor Severus ... but I do have faith that he was not, in fact, hallucinating. And that he's not going to die.

Oh, so very very worth the wait! I'm anticipating something really nasty for the Toe-rag and his rat though. Yeah, really nasty ends for these two jerkwads. I'd even volunteer to help. I still, as always, love Robbie, and the wee reveal to Poppy in Hogwarts' Heart was great. Of course she'd pass out with news like that (I would, I'm sure). I can't help worry for Zabini and his crew here at the onset of the Battle for Hogwarts. I hope they will be okay...I find myself NOT missing Harry or Ron, except when mentioned in passing. That's not blasphemous, is it? Off camping probably, the little eejits! Welcome back and CFP! What are we counting down now, five chappies? Yeah, heckuva finish this.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Not missing Harry and Ron? That's a good thing, I hope! No, not blasphemous, at all.I'm glad you are thinking about Zabini and his crew. No, no Dumbledore's Army there, but . . . you'll see what happens in Slytherin House.Yeah, Poppy has never fainted before, but that -- bit of an unusual shock! Can't blame her. Although she is reserving being angry with Minerva for a later time, when everything is over. Now we are down to three chapters left -- and an epilogue.I'm glad it was worth the wait! Thanks for the review!
First of all. welcome back from your holiday and thanks for the super long and action packed chapter. What a way to return to fanfiction!!!This was, as I said, an action packed chapter. Things move so quickly from the time Severus was summoned in the beginning to the end of the chapter with the attack on Snape. I love how you've written Minerva and all her wonderful traits and strengths come through in this chapter. She's strong and courageous and also tender and very loving. Her reaction to Albus' tomb being desecrated was spectacular and just as I would imagine. I really tugged at the heartstrings when she told Pomona that she would take care of the ramins. That must have been incredibly hard for her.The end with Voldy had me on the edge of my seat. I'm glad Snape was able to take a swipe at Nagini. Great ruddy snake... shudders!!!I'm looking forward to the next update so I hope your muse stays happy and real life allows you time to write.Cheers,GLM

Thank you! I, too, hope that my muse stays happy! I hope that the long chapter helped to ease any withdrawal you might have had from the long wait! I'm glad that it moved quickly, too.I'm glad that you liked Minerva in this chapter. She has a lot to worry about, but she has a lot of strength to draw on.This chapter could be subtitled "Severus Snape and the Shrieking Shack," I think. His history with the Shrieking Shack has not been pleasant, and these events haven't changed that. Thanks for the review!

Ouch, Voldermort certainly plans a gory end. But I'm not sure if this is Snape's end just yet. I can certainly hope he survives.

Thanks, Jannor! I'm glad you're enjoying this fic, too. My "brain holiday" is quite nice, but I'll be happy, I think, to get back to ordinary life soon! It will be nice to find some writing time, certainly. Thanks for reviewing!

Hiya MMADfan! This review is terribly late, and I do apologize. But life, both rl and internet have been crazy and busy. It seems the Hurricane season is definitely warming up, what's an SS captain to do? Oi! Ooh! Ooh, I know--read your chapter, YAY!I feel so sad for Severus, dreading the order to kill Minerva. I liked the forray into his thoughts on the matter.LOL, I loved it when Poppy told Minerva she behaved like a Slytherin. That was rather clever, extracting her cooperation before she knew what she was going to be asked to do. But I know she trusts Minerva. I like her plan, I'm not sure it will work, but I like it. I figured you were going to have some accident happen to her that got her carted off to St. Mungos and required Severus to take over as acting Headmaster. But I am getting anxious, because things are heating up. *rubs hands together with glee*After their practice, the playful banter between Minerva and Robbie is rather endearing. It makes me long for the blue eyes of a certain other wizard. *sigh*“She certainly is an obstinate, hard-headed one,” HA HA! Isn't that the truth! I can identify with that. Robbie and Poppy's improvision seemed to catch Minerva off guard, but that was a good thing, as they said. Then I see the plan didn't really buy much time. I was afraid of that. Now I am interested to see what they will come up with next.Dun dun dunnnn... the plot is getting very intriguing. The talk between Severus and Minerva was great. It is hard for someone to hear truths about themselves that are not commendable so it is easy to see that Severus would be irritated with the way Minerva described his characteristics. But she did a good job of explaining it.Now we have to wait for answers to allllll the questions rolling around in my head. AHHH! Though I do hope you have a nice holiday and enjoy your guest. In the mean time I do have lots to keep me busy. Maybe that will keep me from pining.Wonderful chapter, as always!Cheers,Stef

Hey there, Stef! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! I hope the hurricanes bypass you -- it'd be nice if they would bypass everyone, but that's unfortunately not the nature of things!Glad that you appreciated Minerva's little skit. At least it pleased Riddle enough that Severus didn't get a Crucio this visit. It sounds as though Riddle isn't too happy with his other Death Eaters right now.I'm enjoying my holiday. I'm hoping to have some writing time next week. We will see! It's all planned out, and a lot of the next few chapters is written, but the very next chapter isn't complete. As soon as it is, I'll be updating! Thanks much for dropping by and reading my little story and leaving a review!TTFN!
