Severus Snape’s life was changed when he was hit by an errant spell, and he comes to a decision that defies Dumbledore’s wishes. Even the fate of the wizarding world is altered by this one ill-cast curse and Snape’s subsequent resolve. Long after the spell itself has dissipated, its effects continue echoing in the lives of Severus, Albus, Minerva, and Hermione, and they bring with them a shadowy figure whom Snape does not trust and whose motivations and influence on Minerva are murky. Conspiracies and schemes swirl around Severus as he continues on his path of deception to his final confrontation with the Dark Lord.

Reviews for Death's Dominion
This is a fantastic chapter full of answers. It's wonderful to get so many pieces to the puzzle at once and to have them all fit so nicely.Snape's irritation at not being told the entire truth is very believable and so is Minerva's remark about people trying to sugarcoat what they're telling her. Been there, done that and it's not a good feeling. I'm glad they have each other to give them some honest answers.I can't wait to read what happens when Snape learns that Albus isn't dead and that Death doesn't look like Albus. tee hee. I hope he's not prone to fits of fainting, haha. And I found it very sweet and comforting that Albus wouldn't leave Minerva's side while she was still unconscious. That's such a touching scene, there, and it really tugged at my heartstrings. Then, at the end when she's about to "kill" Albus... sniffles... that was so moving.Looking forward to the next chappie!!! TTFN,GLM

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the chapter.Severus at least had some warning, and he's lying down! That should help. Yes, remembering that neither she nor Albus know whether she will be successful or whether he will really die makes that scene have a different impact, I think. I had considered having these scenes, or parts of them, anyway, come earlier in the story, before we learned for sure that Robbie was Albus, but decided against it. I don't know whether they would have had more impact, but I preferred the flow of the story to leave them for later. It is hard when people think they're "protecting" you by not telling you everyting, but they're just making it worse. Fortunately, Minerva is telling Severus as soon as she possibly could rather than waiting until the Healers think Severus is "ready." I don't know if that's the kind of news anyone is ever ready for. Thanks for the review!

The chapter of missing scenes. So that's what happened when Fawkes snatched Harry. So that's how Albus died so that he could become Robbie for the duration. So that's why Minerva was practicing on the cat.It was wonderful to see Hermione and Severus reunited. He was even brave enough to express a bit of affection for her. What a point to take a break in the story. Now, I get to speculate for days about which of the many emotional responses our dear Professor is going to have to seeing Albus alive. And then, how he will respond ten minutes later. And at what point objects will be thrown. It's a good thing that Albus is healthy. He might need to duck.I'm very glad to see Minerva recovering. I'm off to St. Mungo's to sit with Gareth. I'm reading him Lord of the Rings, so we'll be busy for a while.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Reading to him. Uh huh, sure. Interesting choice -- did page count enter into it at all? I'm sure Gareth will enjoy the attention, especially now that the immobilisation has been lifted. Yup, that's what happened when "Fawkes" (haha) snatched Harry, why Minerva was practicing on cats, and how Albus died and yet didn't.Severus is going through an awful lot of confusing emotions in these first few days he's recovering, isn't he?Severus does throw things when he's upset, doesn't he? I don't know as there is anything in his infirmary room that would be satisfying enough to throw, but if he finds something, I'm sure Albus will duck. Thanks for reviewing!
Response from Hypnobarb (Reviewer)
Gareth needs to be well-rested. He's been through an heroic but difficult time. We may skip a few chapters and go right to the parts about Eowyn. I've always thought that Aragorn picked the wrong girl. When he's healthy enough, I'm sure we'll think of other things to do besides reading. Long walks, philosophical discussions, knife throwing practice are just a few possibilities. I take his recovery very personally. When Albus and Severus talk, Albus should be ready for anything. Including some things that Severus will be embarrassed about later on. Fortunately, Albus is a deeply sensitive person and will be considerate of Severus' feelings. Right after he ducks.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Gareth is a very . . . tactile person. And after immobilisation for so long, he may require some massage therapy. To help speed his recovery, you know.
Response from Hypnobarb (Reviewer)
Fortunately, I took a class on that once. That is an excellent suggestion. *rubs hands together to warm them up*We are only considering his best interests. He is darn lucky to have such considerate friends."Hey, Lady Author," calls Gareth from behind the curtain. "Give her a list of the chapters from RAM that we need to work on."Bossy, isn't he? Hmmm. You might have some excellent suggestions. Gareth doesn't have a beard, though. That leaves that one out.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Oh, he does have a beard. It's just very short. But there are potions to encourage its growth . . . and then other potions . . .I am sure he is in very capable hands.Enjoy!

It was interesting to read about the details of Minerva's plan. And so very good to see her alive and well - and Severus, too! I do hope he won't be distraught over the deception for too long; a holiday might help there, too.

Where to begin?Ah yes, just how long did it take for Hermione resume talking coherently again after that little "prebattle update" meeting with the Headmistress? Can't wait until Severus finds out, hope you will take us there so we can have joy in his joy.
What a battle scene! Feel like I've been rode hard and put up wet. I don't particularly like war scenes but time just suspended itself while I was caught up in all aspects. I particularly loved Blaize Zambini and Snape's Slytherins acting as sort of an honor guard for Harry and avengers of Severus and going toe-to-toe with Voldemort himself. Wonderful!
Evilest cliffie it has ever been my pleasure to endure. I will stop blithering now and anxiously await the next update.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Loved the blithering. Evil cliffie? Heheheh! I'm glad you enjoyed it!I'm sure Hermione was speechless for a while and forgot all her questions! At least she had some preparation and was sitting down, unlike poor Poppy. *clunk* Well, Minerva did catch her. heh! Of course, Voldy had a bit of a surprise, too, but we can't say that was a bad thing! We'll see how Severus finds out.I am glad that you liked the battle scene. I really labored over it. I am particularly pleased you liked Blaise's group of Snape's Slytherins. Thank you very much for the review! It made my morning.

Just read all this in the past couple of days, and ... wow! I love the story, am very fond of your characterizations, and the canon-fixing is just wonderful. Eagerly awaiting the next installment now that I'm thoroughly hooked.

It was so hard reading the Minerva-Crouch part here the first time, not knowing then what I know now after having read the entire story. Poor Severus, to have to have witness this! Again you make his lot hard to bear.
It is so awfully difficult to see someone one loves suffer, no matter what kind of suffering.
(If you are a reader of this story and haven't finished it yet, please do not read on so not to get a spoiler)
And he cannot do otherwise than see her suffer extremely here.
I've never been more glad that looks could be decieving, though, when I learned the truth. Though I guessed it in the next chapter or the chapter after that and was indeed nearly right with my guess.
Author's Response: some spoilers below -------
------
a bit more space ----------
Yes, he interprets things as suffering because of his limited POV, but of course, Minerva was suffering, just not in the way and for the reasons that Severus believed. POV is a very powerful thing, in life and in fiction!
It always kinda amuses me that people are so affected by the second library scene at Hogwarts that they forget the first library scene at Grimmauld Place. haha! Hermione witnesses something she didn't expect, either (though obviously not a graphic scene!), and she and Severus have a very comfy conversation in which she displays enormous trust in him. But the Minerva/Robbie scene really overwhelmed people. Interesting . . .
Thanks for the review!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: Well, we're all too fond of Severus, I suppose... *giggles* Anything contra him is too suspect by far.
Author's Response: It was the ADMM and RaM fans who were particularly knocked over by that scene -- must have thought either Minerva or I had lost our minds! haha! Although actually, many, even most, people who had read RaM actually figured it out from that scene.
Glad you've enjoyed the story so far.

Taking into accord Severus's feelings towards Minerva, Crouch's familiarity with Minerva must have been difficult to observe for Severus. And learning then of his relation to Madam Gamp - oh dear. You really make things hard for him.
Author's Response: Yes, Severus's memory and conscience are both being stimulated, and that's not always a comfortable thing. He still has trouble looking at Harry Potter, even years later. It's a step for Severus, though, even if he doesn't recognize it immediately.
Thanks for the review!
You know, Peeves was probably not having the time of his /life,/ being dead and all. That's probably there on purpose, but being a picker of nits I thought I'd mention it. Also, yeehaw! Kickin' chappie!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
That was meant to be amusing. Besides, he's not a ghost, he's a poltergeist, remember! That's why he gets quiet during the summer and is thrilled when all those kids come back! LOL!Glad you liked the chapter. ;)
Eee! What a chapter! The patch on Robbie was a time-release Polyjuice, in the style of a nicorette patch, I'm guessing- Albus isn't dead, and Rolanda has no reason to be scandalized. I'm just bouncing in my seat here. I have been, almost since I started and noticed that this fic was under 'Potions Under Duress.' You did such a good job with Minerva/Albus, who I don't ship in the least, that I was really excited for this one. And I'm not disappointed in the least. Just dying of anticipation. See you next chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm glad I've got you bouncing in your seat there, and that you're not disappointed! It's great to get an enthusiastic review -- and that you weren't scandalized along with Rolanda! haha! Hope you catch that anticipation before it kills you! lolThanks for the review!

Again, an original and intriquinig approach to a part of the canon. It's nice to see Severus teaching Potions once again, too. As much as the canon Severus seemed to want the Defence position (I'm not entirely convinced that he would have wanted it of his own accord and not following out Voldemorts orders or something in this line), he seems to be so much more at ease and at home in the potions classroom.
Author's Response: Yes, I think he wanted it more because of Voldy wanting him to take it than because he actually would prefer it. I think that he would also think that he could do a better job of teaching it than the morons they usually ended up having teach it -- can you imagine having to find a new defence teacher every year after something befell the previous one? LOL!
I like Severus in the Potions classroom, too -- and I think he really does enjoy Potions.
Thanks!

Great variety of the fetching-Harry-scene - and one that would have certainly worked much better, had Rowling thought of it herself.
Author's Response: I'm glad you liked it. :-)

Now the cat is out of the bag. It must have been really, really difficult for Severus to do so and tell Minerva, all the more because he thinks so low of himself and holds er in so high esteem, and because he is convinced that he will loose her now, too - he, who has so few friends and people believing in him.
But on the other hand, he HAS all the right in the world not to sacrifice his soul and not to do as Albus wishes and thinks useful. How ever could Dumbledore ask something like this from anybody? This is something I will never forgive him, I think ;o). But I must confess that I don't like Dumbledore overmuch *coughs*.
Author's Response: I love Dumbledore, which is one reason why I write him so frequently in my fics. He's a complex character.
Given all that Severus did as a Death Eater, he wouldn't have liked to have to kill Albus, but would have gone through with it if it hadn't been for the Adfectus spell changing the way he saw things and felt about them. After all, the only reason Severus ever turned against Voldemort in the fist place was because of his obsessive "love" for Lily and his desire for revenge. It's not like he's incapable of a great deal of destruction and cruelty in canon when it suits him. But thankfully, the DD Snape picks up at the end of OotP and has room to grow! ;-)
Severus hates Harry as much because he reminds Severus of his mother as of his father, and so he's reminded every time he sees him that his love of the Dark Arts and service to the Dark Lord brought Lily into danger and ultimately killed her. Think he would have cared about some other family? No, Severus needed to grow, and I don't think that the Snape of canon was everyallowed that possibility, unfortunately, and JKR let him stay trapped and static. I prefer a less unremittingly bad Snape, one who can really be saved, redeemed, and not merely sacrificed. Not that I change much about his past, initial canon motivations for leaving Voldy, but I do try to give him room to grow beyond being a nasty bastard with a tendency toward sadism. That's one of the reasons I ignore DH and these fics are all not DH-compliant. I like a Severus w/ more character development! LOL!
Severus and Minerva will come to terms with this, as you'll see over the course of the story. I think you'll enjoy seeing their relationship grow.
Thanks for the review!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: I absolutely agree that Severus had a lot of growing to do since the days of him being a Deatheater and his love for Lily. And I absolutely agree that JKR didn't give him much of a chance to grow - nor to be seen in a different light.
I do interpret canon differently, though, and feel differently, as far as Severus' growing and character development is concerned as well as his feelings and interactions to other canon characters, as well as I feel different about other canon characters ;o).

It's interesting to see that they have indeed been able to return to normalcy or whatever went for normalcy for them. I thought all the time during "An Act of Love" that this must be extremely difficult. What you show about how the curse affected him in the long run appeals to me very much, too. It would have been very unrealistic that he could just be the same as before, but it's difficult to show a realistic Severus but changed in this way. In my opinion, you master this extremely well.
It's so sad, though, to have Severus say that he doesn't believe that he has a right to happiness... and my heart goes out to him with what he needs to do now and must do now, even though it will have hard consequences for him.
Author's Response: The after-effects of the spell have created a torn Severus -- the rest of his life hasn't changed, what he has to do, the circumstances, and all that, but not only did the spell open him up in a way, but he realized that he could have caring, trustworthy people in his life, even if at the moment (chapter one), it's only Minerva.
Throughout the story, the relationship between Minerva and Severus grows and develops, and Minerva is one of those who helps Severus to cope and even to grow despite himself.
I hope that you continue to enjoy the story! Thank you for reviewing!

I planned to read DD chapter by chapter and reviewing each one right after - but couldn't put it down, once again.. ;o) I hope I won't forget any of what I wanted to say during the reading when I now skim the chapters for my reviews...
Anyway, this story really got me hooked again. You have an enormous gift for writing exactly this kind of stories, you know! :o)
The only thing I regret is that I didn't really get the grasp of the poem. With poetry, sometimes my English simply isn't sufficient.
About the prologue: I was rather surprised that the story starts so much more in the future after An Act of Love, but this does well for the storytelling as well as it got me really hooked up into reading. Even though it seems that there isn't any chance at all for a closer relationship between Severus and Minerva (not necessarily romantic).
Author's Response: Yes, I wanted to raise questions and pose riddles in the prologue.
You'll probably notice that there are two storylines, one of which runs chronologically from Chapter One on (the "Severus" storyline, I call it, though Severus isn't in every one of the chapters), and then the other storyline that's the "behind the scenes" storyline, and which we get glimpses of at specific, key points in the story.
Poetry, especially, IMO, anything 20th century or later, can be more difficult to read in a second language than regular prose, even if the person's really fluent. Dylan Thomas relies on a lot of unusual imagery and juxtapositions of images in his poetry, and this one in particular is based upon a biblical text and Dylan Thomas's interpretation of it.
Thanks for the review! I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
I could not help but notice a familiar turn of phrase near the end of the chapter. It's not one that I've heard often, but have read it before in this and a previous, related story. I'm curious. Wondering if it is a common thing for the author to say, or is it the character? Unfortunately, I do not want to point it out in case it might be a 'spoiler' for what is yet to come.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Now I am curious! Actually, I think I know which turn of phrase you might mean, and it's a bit of both, though I don't usually use those precise words. If it's what I think you're referring to! LOL!Yes, I do try to avoid spoilers in reviews and review responses, though I'm happy to answer questions about what has happened in a chapter or something someone has forgotten, as long as it doesn't entirely give something away that the story is building toward. (PMs and email are different.)Glad you enjoyed the chapter! Thanks for the review!

Thank you for the good, long chapter.Of course, I would have liked it if Hermione had appeared in the library with Severus, but there was so much else going on with them, it's hard to be too disappointed. There are too many wonderful details in this chapter to number them, but I like Hermione's belt, the paintball, and Severus' slow progress toward wanting to live with his friends when it is all over. The last scene was beautiful, even the bit about the unconventional couple. You did it just right with no squick.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
You're welcome for the long chapter! I'm glad you liked the various details. It will eventually all come together.I'm glad you liked that last scene. I'm sure the unconventional couple could be written squickily with great ease, but I'm happy there was no squick there, hopefully just some sweetness, and that you liked it.Thanks for reviewing!

I am very glad that Minerva's reaction to Severus killing her was very different from Albus'. But then I was pretty sure it would be. This was such a heartfelt talk they had, and I really hope Minerva got through to him and let him know that he should fight and not go willingly into the dark. It was a good way of letting him know just how much she cares about him. *sniff*Lol, and I really liked the glare she gave him at his remark about Poppy. YAY!!I love how you are showing him, in a somewhat subtle way that people do care for him. The bit about Gareth's gift was great! And I can see how a knife might appeal to Severus. I am wondering when and how he will use it, as I have no doubts that he will get to use it, right?? I am also glad he did decide to send Gareth an I.O.U.Paintball? I have to admit, I have never done that before, but it does sound fun. And that would be a great way for DA to get some aiming pratice without severing any limbs or worse. HALLELUJAH!!!!!! That is WONDERFUL news about Quin!! I could kiss Severus myself... that sounds good, too. Lol. Twenty-five years is so long. I can't believe he has been like that for so long. I will keep my fingers crossed that he might recover enough to partake in the come-uppance. But there may not be enough time. I would Squee, but I am trying to retain my dignity. That book of Albus' sounds very interesting. I can only imagine how it made Severus feel to realize Albus looked out for him and was even trying help him sever his connection to the 'toe-rag' even back then. Definitely let him know how deep Albus' feelings went, I think. I was surprised that Rolanda would bring someone, a stranger, into Hogwarts with the situation as it is now. I think Minerva was right to be irked or even angry. Helena seems a mysterious character to me.I am glad the DA allowed Robbie to assist them with their spells. It was a relief when he explained about the spells they had been practicing. It is definitely a good idea for everyone to be on the same page and avoid what the DA was discussing at the beginning: 'Friendly Fire.' And I was wondeirng how Hermione's 'belt' would hold up if she played paintball. I am glad she didn't have to worry about it... though I wonder what she and Robbie discussed, but I have an inkling.Ummmm, Firenze and Sinistra? Goodness that is an odd pairing if ever I saw one. Anyway, this was a delightful chapter and now I cannot wait for more . . . but I guess I have no choice. Time to pick up a little of my own writing to take my mind off it. Oh, the torture of waiting!!! tee hee. ,Stef =o)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I would Squee, but I am trying to retain my dignity.Oh, yes, dignity, must be retained at all times . . . even when dancin' in the rain! lolEventually it may reach into Severus's consciousness that people do care for him -- good people whom he respects -- and they like him, Severus Snape, although they might hope for him to be the best Severus he can be (and a happier Severus), they like him for who he is.Glad you liked Gareth's gift. It may come in handy, you never know!Yeah, Rolanda got a lecture on bringing strangers into the castle during such a dangerous time -- even though Helena was perfectly all right and Minerva liked her when they had tea.Yes, I know, Firenze and Sinistra is an odd pairing. But I just had this thought of them sharing their love of the stars, even though their appreciations were different, and having someone else to turn to during a difficult time.Yes, write away! Have fun with it!Hope the waiting won't be too much torture for you! Thanks for reviewing!

Btw, will you tell me what the Timere magia spell does? You mentioned in a previous reply a spell Melina casts on another brave wizard and I think this is the one you were talking about. I am afraid I do not know what it does. Other than the fact that I am ecstatic that it helped Quin.Oh, and I am wondering who that other brave wizard is now... Cheers,Stef =o)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Hi, Stef! From way back in chapter fourteen:Minerva sat up straighter. “What? Cured? How?”“There was a curse that the Dark Lord himself created. He thought it was quite amusing. It was only used a few times, though, as almost no one but he could ever master the spell. Something about forming the intent was difficult for most of the Death Eaters. I have a theory about why that was, but I’ll write it all down for you.”“What curse?” Minerva asked impatiently.“It was to create an extreme phobia of all things magic. He named the curse Timor magicus and the incantation was Timere magia, and I know for a fact that it was cast on your friend Quin. They were quite . . . descriptive in their retelling of the attack on him. He was very brave, Minerva. That much was clear to me despite the way they boasted. The Dark Lord came himself and cast that final curse.”Did that help? The other brave wizard was an old friend of Quin's.TTFN!
Response from Stefdarlin (Reviewer)
Yes, very much! Thank you! Sorry I didn't remember that from in that chappie, I thought it might have been what Severus described before but, with the way this story is set up I would probably have been looking a while. You are awesome!!!!!Btw, I was also sad to see that Merwyn had passed away in this chapter. What about Egeria? I think I saw mention of her in this story too, while I wait... patiently... I will probably go back and reread some. Hope you are having a great day.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Egeria's fine -- she was mentioned in AAoL, and I think that it was in the chapter just before this that Melina was going to visit her and Minerva wished she could go, too. Merwyn died while poring over some ancient wizarding manuscripts, so he was happy, though it was quite unexpected.

Hellllooooo there! Alright, due to a certain birthday (on August 1st) and a certain email (emailer to be unnamed, *wink*) I got sidetracked and caught up in rereading sections of RaM instead of DD. Sorry. So now I will get back on the program. Let me just say that it is good to see Neville taking charge like he is. I think it is a little funny, the way some of his mannerisms match Snape's. HA! Though I am a bit worried about the type of bloody spells they are praticing. The Room of Requirement is making it easy to practice but I honestly don't think they will feel too great knowing they have taken a life, no matter who it is. Neville is right about that though, it should never be easy to kill someone. If it were, I would tend to wonder if you might be a psychopath. Btw, I was sad to see they decided not to let any Slytherins into the group. *sigh*Hmmm, sounds like they are talking about Arthur's attack by Nagini. I wonder what on Earth could have made them think 'someone' might get attacked by her? tee hee. Brilliant!!Hermione is a smart girl, she will prbably figure things out before too much time passes. I love how she loyaly follows and is able to do as they tell her. Somehow, I think she knows Minerva would never lead her astray. That is a lot of loyalty. And Gareth! Lol. I'm not sure if it is admirable or bravery in his case. Perhaps a bit of both. Well, maybe that and he trusts Melina, at any rate. This was an interesting aspect of the story though. Maybe it might get Hermione thinking about entrance into the healing field. She would probably more than excel in it. I am glad to see Siofre is still kickin' it!! That would be a fight to charge admission to: Siofre vs. 'the toe-rag' Nothing like letting her take a piece of Riddle in honor of her late grandson. This just gets more interesting the more I read. I am wondering at Minerva's reaction to Bill wanting to wait to have a baby and her advice to him. Does she ever regret not having children with Albus? Even though I know he didn't want any and she seemed fine with it, sometimes I suppose she may have wondered... though now she may be beyond that, but she is a witch. That also brings to mind another matter. You remember the spell in RaM that Albus cast for contraception? He said it was specific to him... now she and Robbie have been having relations (tee hee) but then, Minerva probably took care of that.I love that Robbie came in on the mention of 'Apparation-by-Broom, lol. How perfect. In that moment, he definitely made me think of Albus and I could just see the grin on his face. Awesome!!Oh my goodness, oh my goodness!!! What an evil sarcastic comment to end the chapter on!! LOL! But, all in all, you are still DA BOMBE! I loved this chapter and I can just see Severus sitting there, sipping his tea, and uttering that last sentence so nonchalantly. HA!And... Yippee skippeee, I see another chapter just over there. I need to see the results of this evil cliffie you've got going on... must... go... into... the... light...Cheers!!!!Stef

I'm so glad you're still enjoying it, even if you did get a little side-tracked by RaM! LOL! But that's not a bad thing.Neville really did take Snape's remarks to heart, and the longer he thought about them, the more impressed he was that Snape had said anything at all to him.Yes, poor Gareth the guinea pig! But that's nothing compared to the spell Melina reports casting on a brave & willing wizard in the next chapter -- and no, it wasn't Gareth!I'm glad you're enjoying all these bits and pieces, and that you liked Robbie entering at just that moment and picking up on the conversation.I do love to have Snape end a chapter with an evilly sarcastic comment, but there hasn't been much opportunity, so I'm glad you appreciated this one! However, you did not have to suffer with the earlier readers and wait for the cliffie to be resolved! LOLThanks for the review!

I am thoroughly into this story and can't wait to see where it goes and how it ends. I definitely have some strong suspicions about Robert Crouch. It will be interesting to see if they're correct. I love how you have written Minerva as such a strong, powerful character. Glad to see that Quin may recover but sad to hear that Merwyn died. I have 2 trivial questions that have been nagging at me: who is Estelle? DD and RaM both reference a brooch/pin that Malcolm owned and it had a raven and a snake on it. I assume the snake represents Gertrude, but I thought Malcolm was a Gryffindor. How is the raven significant?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Wow! You really are an observant reader! Glad you noticed the brooch. That is something that Malcolm had for years before he met Gertrude, a gift from someone he had helped out of a tight spot (no, not one of his many lady friends! LOL), and it was something that he wore a lot, then after he died, Gertrude wore it, then Gertrude gave it to Gareth. So it is mere coincidence that Gertrude is a Slytherin, though it is interesting that a Gryffindor would have no prejudices about wearing a snake.Estelle is Murdoch's wife. Yup, he and Poppy never quite managed the relationship thing, though they tried for more years than was probably good for either of them. (If you read "Now is Perfect," you'll get a hint of what the trouble was.)Merwyn died one day over some ancient manuscripts, so he died peacefully and happily doing what he enjoyed.I'm glad you like Minerva! She gets her chance to rise to the occasion.I hope you continue to enjoy the story! I hope to have the next chapter up in about 2 weeks, but I can't make guarantees . . .Thanks for the review!

Oh, yet another great chapter.Minerva is so great here--her ability to be nonchalant about the hit order, and the way she reaches out to Severus and elicits his promise to fight to the last. And convincing him, finally, I think, that he has already paid his debt to Lily and that his actions now are about something more. Not that he really believes her even now, but I think he at least hears her, and the seed can take root. Before, he couldn't really even hear her.The past 18 mos have really brought MM to the top of her game, even as awful as it's been. And Severus's description of how much pleasure he will take in watching LV discover that he's been betrayed--and his emotions when Minerva indicates she will give him the credit he's so due--all beautiful.Severus has grown so much lately. His ability to respond to Gareth's gift, as well as his promises to Minerva. There is indeed hope for him.- - - -Robbie says to Minerva, re Buckbeak: "We should have moved him after Sirius died. Keeping him in the attic for two years . . . even for one, it may have seemed the right thing at the time, but I think it was cruelty. We should have relocated him somewhere else."*We* should have, eh? But, dearest quiet Robbie, weren't you just a happily married apothecary in Amsterdam at the end of OotP? What would you have had to do w/ Buckbeak/Witherwings' fate at that point? Wouldn't that have been Albus's decision? Hmm?!?!!??- - - - -Quin, oh Quin--YES!!!! I'm as excited as Melina and Minerva!- - - -Yes, Severus, Minerva does seem to talk as if Albus is still around, doesn't she?! Poor woman. We each show our exhaustion in different ways, I suppose...for her it's betraying to you that her subconscious's coping strategy is to live on the river DeNial in some ways re Albus's death.....or something!- - -Robbie is so excellent w/ Neville and the students. They've finally got a competent and wise and compassionate DADA teacher. My favorite line in that bit was:" “A little flamboyant, for a defensive spell, but very pretty at night,” Robbie commented." LOL!I can see why Hermione thinks Robbie "feels" a lot like Albus. Lots of "my boy"s and "my dear"s. And the same mix of wisdom, compassion and humour. And skill. Of course, since Albus featured prominently in Robbie's upbringing, especially immediately after his father was killed, I guess it's no surprise he absorbed some of Albus's characteristic quirks--and picked up some of his deeper traits as well......

What would you have had to do w/ Buckbeak/Witherwings' fate at that point? Wouldn't that have been Albus's decision? Hmm?!?!!??Well, maybe it's a "we" as in "we, The Order," the way people talk about their company or their country or what have you . . . not "we" as in "you and I specifically," or "I and the Order." Hmm? Does that work for ya?Glad you like Minerva here. And the combined efforts of various people have managed to get Severus to agree to struggle to the end and not give up, even if they haven't managed to get him to feel hopeful. But it would be probably too hard to be hopeful in that situation, and if you "knew" you were going to die, that you had to die, feeling hopeful would probably be either impossible or painful.Yes, Robbie is pretty good at teaching DADA, isn't he? I'm glad that you liked that line. Yes, very pretty -- and luckily also very effective! Thanks for the review! Hopefully, the next chapter will be up in about 2 weeks.

I daresay that Professor Crouch may very well be the best DADA professor of the ones we have seen. He's versatile, has good advice to offer, and seems to be an able teacher. I hope he can stay on for more than one year.A switchblade. The gift that keeps on giving. I hope Severus gets to buy Gareth that drink. I hope that switchblade plays a role on the outcome of the battle.I feel terrible for Severus, being given orders to kill another friend. No wonder the man has a stress problem. Thanks for giving us a peek into Dumbledore's Army and the training they are receiving. Neville is turning out to be a real leader. We're getting close to the battle and I'm getting nervous about it.

Yes, they were scraping the bottom of the barrel for DADA teachers by the HP years, weren't they! Yes, Professor Crouch is good. Actually, the other Crouch/fake Moody probably taught some effective lessons, but he was pretty terrible, at the same time. Interesting gift, huh?I'm glad that you like the various preparations.I think everyone's getting nervous about what's to come!

Thank you for updating! Darkly brilliant as always, with nice clues as to future events peppered throughout. One can hear the thunderheads gather, despite the few 'lighter spots'; Gareth's gift, Crouch's patient, father-like interaction with Neville, and Melina 'attacking' Severus are especially touching. Melina adds joy to any day. Severus' despair is understandable, if difficult for those who want to help him. He'd probably just despair even more if he knew the effort his friends are going through to save someone, by medical means.... Perhaps, if Severus is so convinced of his upcoming death, he should leave Gareth the price of a pint in his will? Again, thank you! Black Tea

Yes, even as zero hour approaches, there are glimmers of joy and human warmth. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter and appreciated the lighter spots. Melina is an exuberant one -- it's hard to get her down for long. And yes, already one saved who had been lost, and Quin will be able to enjoy life fully again, though that quarter century spent with the curse on him can never be regained and will always have an effect on him. But he's got energy and a love of life, so he'll be fine. Thanks for the review! I'm glad that you liked it!
