Severus Snape’s life was changed when he was hit by an errant spell, and he comes to a decision that defies Dumbledore’s wishes. Even the fate of the wizarding world is altered by this one ill-cast curse and Snape’s subsequent resolve. Long after the spell itself has dissipated, its effects continue echoing in the lives of Severus, Albus, Minerva, and Hermione, and they bring with them a shadowy figure whom Snape does not trust and whose motivations and influence on Minerva are murky. Conspiracies and schemes swirl around Severus as he continues on his path of deception to his final confrontation with the Dark Lord.

Reviews for Death's Dominion
*wipes away tears*
I knew you must have had something special in store for Severus. The part where everyone gets their Merlins is usually the chapter I skip, but you kept my interest with the little looks passing between people, and I'm sure once I've read the other stories that come before, all of those other names will mean a lot more, too.
This was a lovely, touching chapter, and now I'm looking forward to seeing him and Hermione together again.

I'm glad you liked it. I do try to put "content" into even chapters like this -- like all the dialogue and character interactions in the chapter with the battle, and trying to use the POV to give it more depth than just a bare-bones description of what's happening. Awards dinners are pretty boring in RL, and I hoped to convey that this event wasn't much different, but without making the chapter itself dull. So I'm glad it worked for you!I'm glad you found it touching! Thanks for reviewing!

Ooooh, that was sneaky of you! :-D I kept feeling awful for Severus being slighted again for the whole chapter, as impossible as it seemed that he'd really only get a third class medal (considering the people in charge), but, well... and then the final part was just wonderful!I liked Blaise's speech a lot, too. Slytherin qualities certainly aren't equal to nasty or plain evil!

heheheh! You know me and the power of perspective! I'm glad you found the final part wonderful. "I liked Blaise's speech a lot, too. Slytherin qualities certainly aren't equal to nasty or plain evil!"I agree; to me, that was one of the disappointments in the you-know-what-book. As Albus says in RaM, "just because ambition can make many Slytherins unprincipled does not mean that ambition and principle are mutually exclusive," and it has never "been a very comfortable House for anyone who is not a Slytherin," but that doesn't that Slytherins all have to be bad. *shrug*Thanks much for the review! I'm glad you liked it.

You made me cry. Not just a little sniffle. It was a tear up, wipe my eyes, blow my nose, and fix my mascara cry. That was beautiful. You put us in Snape's head so we got to walk along with him down the path of despondence. He just knew that he was going to be ignored again. How he felt smaller and unappreciated, while being pleased for the people he cares about and his students. He's been alone and despised for such a long time, he finds it impossible to believe that other people could think him heroic and appreciate the sacrifice his life has been.*blows nose again*The Order of Merlin Without Peer. Perfect. It makes up for what That Other Author didn't give him. I'm going to have to go back and sort out Minerva's family and Albus' friends, because I think I'm lost.Gareth did look very good. And a war hero, to boot.*sigh*
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm very glad you got teared up and liked the chapter so well. I'm glad that I decided to put it in on its own.The Order fo Merlin Without Peer seemed appropriate, given the nature of his long and hard work. There's a revised "Who's Who in DD" on my LJ, and then the "Who's Who in RaM," too. I have a more complete "Who's Who in the RaMverse," but it's not posted anywhere at this point. Maybe taking a look at those will help straighten it out. (I started keeping timelines and character lists early in RaM, or I would have completely lost it a long time ago!)Yep, Gareth did look good! He was wearing his dress sporran, too, not his everyday one, so he was quite a grand sight. Thank you!

Rules for everyday life: "To follow a leader without question is not Slytherin. To adopt a practice without evaluating it is not Slytherin. To act in accordance with tradition merely for the sake of that tradition is not Slytherin. Being incapable of bending can snap you, and to refuse to grow is most assuredly death. A Slytherin thinks independently and deliberately. We choose our loyalties; we do not have them thrust upon us." -- I think I need to find some embroidery thread an stitch this as a sampler! [Green & Silver!]I must admit I was getting a little nervous there near the end, even though I knew something 'big' had to happen. But an OoM, Without Peer! Icing on the cake!

The ceremony was such a nice note to end on (yes, yes, I know, I know, epilogue still to come...)! It was moving to see how people thanked Severus in their own ways. But, I gotta say, I'm sure the part that I became obsessed with wasn't the one you intended. :) Though in fairness, I'm a lifelong RaM fan now, so it shouldn't come as a surprise. From the moment of the "McGonagall reunion" until you described who Eoghan was, I sat in my chair screaming: OMG! SIOFRE MARRIED JOHANNES AND THEY MADE A KID! OMG!But you know... she's hearty and stuff... Hahaha. I was going along with it. Whatever!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
LOL! Well, you got it half right! They just didn't make the kid. That would have made her very hearty at, I dunno, a hundred forty-something. heheheh!I'm very glad you liked that bit! And that you figured out who the other wizard was. It was one of my favorite little parts, too. The RaM universe is a fun and complex place to play. If I ever write the RaM sequel, some of the Siofre stuff will be in there. (Did you read "Now is Perfect"? In that little one-shot, there's a glimpse of how their relationship got started.)Thank you for your review! It gave me a big smile this morning.
Response from sevherfan (Reviewer)
Silly, silly, MMADfan! Of course I've read everything you've ever written. That's how I knew it was Johannes. I mean, without that little hint, there are a lot of people with blond hair - even in the RaM universe... :) Well, there is also Johannes' penchant for older women and Siofre's for younger men (I'm prettttty sure Herbert was younger!). hehehe.
<daydreamy-sigh>I'll just sit and think about the sequel where Johannes and Siofre fall in funny love, and Malcolm and Gertie have wild-crazy Gareth-conception, and Minerva and Albus talk about how they won't make babies, and Minerva and Gertie have coffee and sister-in-law-talk, and Merwyn dies (ok, that's a sad one :( ), and Minerva and Quin have tea and he talks about Poppy's crush on him after she & Murdoch part, and Minerva and Albus play around with creating super-strong shields with mated wands, and Minerva tries to set up Egeria and Aberforth, and, of course, where there's lots of Albus+Minerva hot sex! <daydreamy-sigh II>
Response from sevherfan (Reviewer)
Oh - but I forgot to mention - that, like this epilogue, I believe you'll completely go against all my little daydreams and instead write the plot-rife sequel where Malcolm dies and Quin loses his mind and Albus tries to protect Minerva in ways not conducive to lots of Albus+Minerva hot sex! :) It is ok though, I'll still love you!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I have a huge grin on my face now. Actually, Herbert was older than Siofre by about 20 years (something that Albus felt he had to point out to Minerva back when Herbert died -- the closeness in his age to Siofre's, etc.), and her first husband, Collum, was in her year at Hogwarts, so she's flexible. But Johannes does tend to like older women, that's true, and he likes them strong and sharp. As for your various plot-fantasies, I won't tell you which are close and which aren't, except to say that you have some right and not others. But it's good to know that no matter, what, you'll still love me! Keep daydreaming!

Another great chapter to an awesome story. I can so sympathize with Snape, sitting in a meeting or an awards ceremony when you'd rather be a thousand other places. LOL It's a good thing Poppy was there to keep him in his seat. tee heeThe speeches made by Blaise and Harry were great and I love how Blaise was so eloquent and yet Harry struggled, just as I would expect him to in this sort of situation. Hmm, a few other things:Siofre is AWESOME! I really love her character for some reason and I think she'd be a hoot.Alroy... man he was a grumpy guss all night. He seems to be taking on some of Snape's old habits. hahaAnd the best bit... Minerva kissed Albus and made him blush, awwwwwwWhat a sweet way to end my night. lolLooking forward to more, as always! The GLM

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm especially glad you liked the little bit of Siofre we got to see here. Alroy, poor wizard, really wanted to be with his dad and his sweetheart -- he was also very hungry! He's not much of one for sitting around for long periods, though he manages.Yes, Albus had a bit of a blush there! Severus got more than he had expected, that's for sure. Thanks for the review!

I can well imagine how conflicted Severus must be feeling. Also, I found it both amusing and encouraging that he'd only "consider" attending the ceremony for Minerva, but "will be there" for Hermione.

This is not the end? Please say this is not the end? There has to be more. I was almost certain Severus would suggest he accompany Hermione or she stay at Spinner's End rather than number 12.I can well understand Severus' feelings. So much of his life had to be a lie and to find out one of the few true emotions he felt was a fabrication beyond his control had to be debillitating. I think I wouldd have been as churlish as he was and I can understand why he lashed out at Hermione. She was safe. The one person whose care and affection he knew if only in his heart was not given to gain something from him but, because it was honest. His being hurt is understandable, as well. The trite phrase is "We hurt the ones we love," but I believe it is most true that we are only ever truly hurt by those we love. So Albus' deception had the most power to hurt Severus because Severus loves him if at this moment he is unable to vocalize that love.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Did it say "the end"? He wouldn't invite anyone to stay at Spinner's End, whether he was there or not, and he wouldn't suggest Hermione stay there between then and Sunday when she leaves for Australia, And lucky for her she has other far more comfortable and congenial options, including hotels! LOL! He also wouldn't suggest that she put off her trip until he could leave Hogwarts and was well enough to travel, even if it occurred to him that she couldn't do it without him or something of the sort. Severus is blessed with friends who will put up with him even when he's in a mood -- Poppy, Hermione, and Gareth, to name a few -- whether he realizes it or not. And Albus completely understood how he reacted and will be there for him when he's ready. Right now, Severus is going through so many complicated emotions, and not only because of Albus's reappearance, that he doesn't know what to do. He hadn't expected to live. For weeks, he had been living as though he was going to die soon, he went to Voldy that last time fullly believing he would die, and then he thought he really was dying. Lo and behold, he wakes up! He's survived, the Dark Lord is dead, the Slytherin teacher who had stepped in to help with his House is dead, some Slytherin students killed her, but other Slytherins are being hailed as heroes. He has no idea which way is up right now, poor fellow.Thank you for your review! I'm glad you liked the chapter! Stay tuned for the epilogue!

This was a fantastic chapter. It was so intense to see Snape's reaction to finding out that Abus is alive and well. That must have been a serious shock. Good thing he was already in the infirmary. tee hee.The description of Albus' death and the gathering waiting for his name to change in the Gryffindor book was really intense. Despite knowing he was alive and well, I still found myself growing nervous. Good thing Minerva kept her cool until it was all over.
Clandestine affairs, huh? Dare I hope and dream that you might have a few ideas for some rather naughty witch/wicked wizard ideas rolling around in that genius head of yours? Oh we can only hope!!!!
Got quite a chucckle at the end of this chapter. Snape tells Minerva he'll think of going to the ceremony yet when Hermione asks, he says he'll be there. That's just too funny. Maybe there's hope and life for Snape after all. wheeee. Thanks for posting today. I needed it!

*applauds*Another amazing chapter. All of the speculation from the previous chapters is all being answered brilliantly. I hope Minerva doesn' t keep Severus in suspense for too long. It is so sweetly sad that she was the first person he asked about--she's been the center of his world for so long, but now he's got someone else by his side. I love Hermione as friend and physical therapist. The strongest image for me in this chapter was her sitting on his bed holding his hand to her cheek, and then her kissing him on the cheek!I like Egeria :) I egerly anticipate the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Severus's suspense will be broken soon. Since he knew that Hermione was okay, the first person to jump into his mind was Minerva. She held him together for so many months, and was his friend longer, he didn't think he could have borne it if he had lived and she had not.Hermione will be a strength for him, someone who can help him recover and realize that he really does live.I'm glad you like Egeria. She was fun in RaM.Thanks for reviewing!

I'm sure as Albus sat at Minerva's bedside he had even deeper appreciation for what she went through all those weeks while he was genuinely ill, though not for the reasons folks were led to believe.Hmm...Egeria watching Hermione care for Severus....being the very perceptive witch that she is, with some considerable understanding of personalities similar to Hermione's and how such witches manifest devotion....I bet she and Minerva will be having some quality conversation on that topic in the coming weeks!Hermione and Severus are so absolutely wonderful w/ each other in this chapter! They've come so far in their trust and intimacy w/ each other....it's as if the emotional and physiological connection they shared as Hermione saw him attacked and breathed for him and saved him has broken down heaps of walls....almost as much as the Adfectus did for SS and MM.I wonder what Albus thinks about being repeatedly confused for the Angel of Death? A role he hadn't anticipated acting in, for all the other acting he's done in this story! Fodder for more philosophical discussions w/ Hermione, once they've sorted the nature of the soul! :-)Albus is so matter of fact about the possibility of either him or Minerva dying in the attempt to cut Riddle in the battle. After going to such lengths to save him and such, they are both so willing to lay it all down.... (bows down to Albus's nobility). So glad to have so many missing pieces filled in--even suspecting or knowing some of them in broad-brush before, it was great to get all the details. A wonderful chapter. I really liked the scene w/ SS and MM when she asks him to go look in on Gareth b/c she's afraid they aren't being honest w/ her, and she trusts Severus to tell her the truth. The man who, by necessity, has spent the past 18 yrs lying like a rug in 80% of his life, yet Minerva sees the true Severus and knows him to be a truth teller. Speaks volumes about her respect for him.I concur w/ the advice from Hypnobarb, that Albus needs to be ready for anything from Severus, and be ready to duck. I can picture SS thinking something like, "I'm so mad to learn you're not dead that I could kill you!" Which would be almost as great a line as when he said to Robbie, "If you betray us....I will kill you, with a clear conscience." (That whole scene at the gargoyle is one of my favourites, being exceedingly fond of irony.)We are all tottering on the edge of the cliff.... :-)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Yes, Minerva does recognize Severus as truthful at his core, and certainly at a time when she asks for the truth, she knows she can get it from him. It makes it hard for her to know that she's been lying to him -- although it really was for his own protection. It is interesting that Albus should be confused for some vision of Death, certainly. He has tried his entire life not to kill, though he has been responsible for deaths in more indirect ways, and here he is, confused for a symbol of Death. The connection between Severus and Hermione is deeper here. It is hard to know that a person breathed for you, sustained your life for hours, in addition to having rescued you in the face of Death Eaters and a giant snake, And to have believed you were dying with your head in her lap and found some comfort in that -- pretty strong stuff. Even if Severus has no conscious memory of most of what she did for him, his body must carry the memory of her breath.Hold on for a bit longer -- don't fall off the cliff! Thanks for the review! Very glad you enjoyed it.

An ingenious way for Harry to kill off Voldemort - Mine! Mine! Mine! Harry referring to Snape as the greatest Slytherin hero brought back echoes of one of my favorite scenes - Snape in the bath giving himself a pep talk about being the sneakiest Slytherin ever, or something. Loved Twiskett joining Snape's Slytherins. I wonder what they thought of it?I hope Gert lives long enough for her and Snape to have some sort of final confrontation.

Dang. I accidentally erased my own last comment - typical Monday. Anyway, I meant to say. No way did you actually kill Minerva and Gareth. No way. Not possible.

I'm glad you liked this method of Harry's killing Voldemort! It fit with the Harry-the-Horcrux/Human Wand-effects theory of Hermione (and the others), and I thought it nicely parallel to TR destroying his own Horcrux. (He really wasn't as bright as he thought he was, since he apparently never realised that he'd created a Horcrux in Harry.(Oh, yes, his pep talk, the greatest Slytherin since Slytherin himself, or something of the sort. Yep. Very much like that.I think Snape's Slytherins, particularly as many of them were purebloods, probably found it startling and a bit odd, at least, but they didn't question it. Loyalty is a trait not prized only by Hufflepuffs, and so they welcomed him. Besides, he was rather useful! You'll just have to read the next chapter to see if I killed off Minerva and Gareth after having saved Severus. I'm having my own Monday issues, so I understand!Hope you enjoy the next chapter! Thank you for the review!

Oh! I cannot wait to see what Severus' reaction to Albus living will be. I hope it will not be as dreadful as everyone seems to anticipate. After everything else Severus is trying to adjust to I think he may surprise them all and take it in in a manner of catatonic shock. What does it matter if one more person is alive that he thought would or should be dead at this point. After all he has not blown a gasget over Hermione's affectionate nature toward him...which I am pleased to see.More soon, oh gifted one.

Severus is going through a lot right now, and of course, in his first hours of consciousness, he was very much in shock that he was alive, stunned at his circumstances, and surprised by so much, it was all hard to process. And when someone you already care about, and whom you believe you hallucinated about when you thought you were dying, and who you learn saved your life through heroic acts, and for whom you already had a soft spot -- it's easier to accept some affection from that person, at least while you're still in your state of shock and surprise. We'll see when I can get the chapter finished, polished, and posted. Maybe next weekend, but I won't guarantee anything.Thank you very much for your review! I'm very glad you enjoyed the chapter!

Wonderful chapter. I loved Severus's suspicions, Hermione's coaching him all of the visits and Ron calling himself "Snape's Slytherin". I even enjoyed the look at the spells Albus used. All in all a very satisfying chapter.

Yes, when Severus finally gets his back copies of the Daily Prophet, he will get to read the Ron Weasly quotation for himself. I'm very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!

"Weasley," of course.I'll blame my headache.

I am curious. Where is the real Robbie Crouch?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Where might Robert have gone? I think you can guess the answer . . . (I know, I'm evil! LOL!)

Hiding out at the island?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Just one big happy family all living in the same place for the first time. Gertrude found it somewhat difficult to adjust after all those years of it being just her and Gluffy, with occasional visits from others.

All, or nearly all, of the "Missing scenes" tidied up and neatly wrapped. Almost. Even though I knew (sortof) how Albus' "death" would turn out, I admit I had tears in my eyes from the worry! Is there any way that we can circulate a petition or something to have "Death's Dominion" filmed? Please, please, please? Poor Severus: recovering from one shock after another, and he hasn't even seen Albus yet.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Just about everything wrapped up. I'm glad you liked the scene w/ Albus at the end there. You will just have to use the Cinemascope of the mind! Unless you wish to try for the impossible. Feel free! Thank you for reviewing! Glad you liked it!
