Severus Snape’s life was changed when he was hit by an errant spell, and he comes to a decision that defies Dumbledore’s wishes. Even the fate of the wizarding world is altered by this one ill-cast curse and Snape’s subsequent resolve. Long after the spell itself has dissipated, its effects continue echoing in the lives of Severus, Albus, Minerva, and Hermione, and they bring with them a shadowy figure whom Snape does not trust and whose motivations and influence on Minerva are murky. Conspiracies and schemes swirl around Severus as he continues on his path of deception to his final confrontation with the Dark Lord.

Reviews for Death's Dominion
Ah, it has begun. If one reads it carefully, so many answers fill the prologue as to how Albus died, & how Snape tried to prevent it. Of course, it also leaves many questions, the main being: why was death his option? But that we shall discover. I am glad that there shall be flashbacks; it would not be RAM without Albus, even in past thought. And, thank you for the Thomas; as always, he is beautiful.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm glad you appreciate the Thomas. I love his use of language.A lot of questions & a lot of answers, too, you are right, there! It's not precisely flashbacks; it's more that the story has a nonlinear structure. The Prologue is a sort of . . . flashforward? But not very far forward . . .I hope you continue to enjoy it! Thank you for the review! (Your name, BTW, always reminds me of "Tea with the Black Dragon," for some reason, even though I drink black tea . . .)
The song was beautiful and very moving. I was surprised by Harry's cold cuelness, but old feelings die hard. Interesting first start.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
It seemed an appropriate poem for a number of reasons. And, of course, I just love Dylan Thomas's poetry, especially Fern Hill and Altar-wise by owl light. Fern Hill is great . . . Harry was not a very pleasant boy a lot of the time in his 5th and 6th year. I hope you enjoye the rest of the story.
I am sitting here speechless. I can't believe Albus is already gone in the beginning of this story. The poem was beautiful and very fitting for Albus. I could almost hear Minerva's voice (sounding a lot like Maggie Smith in my head, haha) reciting it for those gathered.
And what a gathering! Umbridge??? Ummm, yeah…that just seems wrong on all accounts though Albus did believe in redemption. Too bad Minerva didn’t hex her on sight. Or better still, set the centaurs on her as soon as she set foot on the grounds for the funeral.
And Harry is such a little jerk. No, make that JERK!! For once, I agree with Snape. He is a selfish little cretin and has the audacity to presume to know how others feel in this sort of situation. I’m glad Snape let him have it, though it would have been better if it had been a full blown rant, though obviously that would have been playing into Potter’s hands. GRRRRR!!
I am very anxious to see what’s happened to everyone since AAoL. I’m sure there will be many twists and turns (look at RaM) so I’m fully on board for the ride. Hope to read more soon!
TTFN,
GLMP.S. I love the banner you made for this story. It's almost a sunrise but could also be a sunset. Very cunning of you, my dear!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
The narrative isn't linear, so we do get to see some of what happened in between the epilogue of AAoL and the prologue here.Harry really doesn't like Severus much, does he? Well, Snape tried to give the kid a chance to rise above himself . . .Glad you're on board for the ride! Thanks -- glad you like the banner!
Poor Minerva - especially after what Snape said to her about Albus's last days. And Harry's comment was COMPLETELY selfish - Snape was totally justified in his remark. I would be furious as well. I can't wait until the next chapter - please update soon!P.S. Dylan Thomas is one of my favourite poets. I'm glad you included him in the story!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm glad you enjoyed it! And that you like the Dylan Thomas. Thanks! Harry wasn't very nice there, was he? Nobody's happy . . .
Well now. Things are not always what they appear to be and this should be an interesting ride, shouldn't it?Is it blasphemy to say that Harry after about year 4 became a real pain in the backside to me? I was far more interested in the so-called "secondary characters" (tr. grown-ups) anyway!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
It's not blasphemy to my ears! We'll see . . . Severus is one unhappy wizard here. No one is particularly happy here, are they? But it is a funeral . . .
Response from dmf1984 (Reviewer)
I've been to some funerals, honestly, that were not very funereal at all. I guess it's because we all handle grief differently.I have to add that my favorite student characters are Neville and Luna. He's a gardener after my own heart (and a broken-hearted one at that, he is), and she's so feckin' daft she's BRILLIANT! My opinion, FWIW...
Well, it's good to be back - and find DD finished! So much has happened in the last few chapters that I can't comment on everything, except to say: Brava. Brava!Every note has struck true, particularly the epilogue - Severus' mental disembodiment, its timorous thread of purpose, & his solid friendship with Hermione. It will take years, and seem unnatural, but his life will take care of "living". And, I suspect, so it will for Albus, Mineva, etc. -Loved the intricacy of the Plan's spellwork, too.-Thank you for creating this story with its intensely detailed characters and plot. Anything you care to write, I will cheerfully read!

A wonderful epilogue for a wonderful, amazing, fic. Every time I re-read it to review I end up in tears, which makes typing difficult....so I won't re-read it this time!I feel for Severus--he really is walking into a void.Hermione's advice is excellent, and returning to Hogwarts will be very good for him. Hopefully over the course of the year he will find meaning in teaching and guiding students free of his old constraints, and maybe some other possible purpose will capture him--whether research, or a relationship <g> or ??? . Meanwhile Minerva and Hermione can continue to counsel him, and he can work towards some sort of new equilibrium in his relationship w/ Albus. Who is probably a bit more at sea himself than Severus gives him credit for--there were signs of that in their infirmary conversation. Severus, Hermione's parents, and Albus have all undergone major dislocations in their identities and need to fnd their way back to center--maybe they could form a support group! "Hello, my name is Severus, and I don't know who I am anymore."I think what I most appreciated in this chapter is Severus's ability to be vulnerable to himself and to Hermione. He's never been able to indulge in either self-reflection or vulnerability before. Given that, he's making measurable progress. To realize how others see his blank eyes was key. Also, to have the trust in Hermione that he could admit he feels at sea, and still on some level wishes he'd died, w/o her taking offence, was very brave of him. And she responded beautifully, of course. There is some very real promise in this friendship. ;-)YOu always introduce little titbits...this time it is his ring. Was it made for him as his version of the Snape's Slytherin's ring? Or was it his all along and served as the model for theirs? He doesn't strike me as the jewelry-wearing type--and it could even be dangerous to wear jewelry in his lab or potions classroom--and we haven't heard mention of it before--so I'm assuming it's new. In which case his wearing it is another sign of hope. If when he wears it he can remember Blaise's words, about how even when constrained by his role he was able to model the good in being a Slytherin, then hopefully he can begin to extrapolate from that that he *does* have a purpose, for the next year at the very least.A huge round of applause for this story, which along w/ AAoL deals with the time from the end of OOtP through the end of canon MUCH better than certain other attempts. From now on it will be my preferred version!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
First off, his ring: it was a gift from Blaise. He gave it to Severus after the awards dinner. Blaise had it made when he had the others made for Snape's Slytherins. Seeing it and feeling it does help him some, which is why he's been wearing it. And it's more convenient and less conspicuous than wearing a honkin' great medal on your chest! lol
You are right that a lot of people have suffered dislocations and are having to rediscover or reinvent who they are. Endings become beginnings.
Thank you for reviewing so faithfully! I've always enjoyed learning what struck you and how it made you feel. Thank you.
Response from esoterica1693 (Reviewer)
For someone who would describe himself as un-sentimental, Snape actually is--c.f. his feelings about the watch, and the ring. He understands symbolism. Two things I thought of after my previous review...Severus is letting himself dream, and while the nightmares/memories are awful, he doesn't seem tempted to go back to occluding. Minerva will be very proud, and I think this is a crucial step forward. I do think Minerva can continue to be a good resource for him--what we muggles would call a therapist! <g>The other is that the way he made the journey to Hermione's on the train is a very nice echo of one of the symbols that other author does use well--train journeys as symbolic of transitions between worlds...for Harry every year moving between muggle and magic, and then in a station at the end of a certain book we shall not mention. After reading that book, I really thought that several characters in it, especially Albus, could have benefited from therapists and confessors. In your universe Severus has the same need, but you've signalled that he does have resources to draw on--most especially Hermione and Minerva, and perhaps Gareth in a way, and maybe even Albus, once he's come to terms w/ him a bit more. You have given Severus life, and resources, and hopefully those will be enough to give him hope and a future, though it will be a long, hard journey. Bravo!

As I mentioned at LJ, when you listed your favorite chapters in Death's Dominion, I went back and started rereading. Which led to rereading the whole story, when I should have been cleaning the bathrooms or raking leaves.Once again, you made me cry with this last chapter. It is a very fitting end. Severus Snape is damaged, physicially and emotionally. He never planned a future beyond that final confrontation with Riddle, because he didn't believe he could have one.To feel at sea with everything is a reaction that makes great sense in the context of his life. I'm glad that Severus reconnected with Hermione and is going to accept her advice not to make any big decisions right now. What a lovely idea, putting the young American witch on the bus. Severus may have shrugged it off as scaring Muggles, but it represents the possibility of the world viewing him very differently than what he has accustomed himself to.You've made it clear that Severus is going to wrestle with his future. His biggest enemy is likely to be himself and the baggage he carries with him. I want to know what will become of him. What will his life be in five years? Ten? You have given him the future Some Other Writer denied him. What will happen for Minerva and Albus? What will it be like having their marriage become public knowledge? They've had time to become accustomed to the role-reversal in their careers, but will it be different when Albus Dumbledore is in the room instead of Robbie? And Gareth. One of the things I rediscovered as I read was Albus and Minerva talking about him settling down. With one gender. I had forgotten that and it cast a new light onto his burgeoning friendship with Severus.I may be jealous, here. All of the long hours of writing you've given us. I know that it is a labor of love and the need to write. Still, thank you. Between RAM and DD, you've captured my imagination and I look forward to whatever you choose to write next.

Thank you. I really appreciate your review. I'm glad that you liked the epilogue and found it moving, but I'm also glad that you were able to reread the story. It is different from reading it over the course of several months, certainly. It made me smile to see that you noticed what Albus said about Gareth. It is interesting. (Don't be too jealous, though. After all, we know that in the past, Severus has had a thing for Gryffindor witches, and as Gareth's neither a Gryffindor nor a witch, I doubt the long-term prospects for such a thing would be very good. Though I do think there's a friendship brewing, despite Severus's grouchiness about it.)You are right, many people have gone through significant, head-spinning changes in their lives, and learning how to live with them will be a task.I will think again about the sequel. As I mentioned, I have a few hundred pages of the draft written, but I'm debating posting it. I'll wait until it's finished before I decide anything.Thank you again for all of your thoughtful reviews! I have really appreciate them, and they've been very encouraging.

Lovely, just lovely. I enjoyed the melancholy feel of the trip, and hurt a little for Severus when he felt so awkward and out of place and wanting to leave... the ending was just perfect though (for this story; I'd love a sequel!), full of hope and the beginning of a whole new journey.

Loved, loved the epilogue. Severus' struggle and hope made my eyes leak a little. Hermione is very wise, but I get the sense she needed to see him as much as he needed to see her - the little bit of pain she shows over the harm she caused her parents made my eyes leak, too. This was a very leaky chapter! Now I'm impatiently waiting for the story to continue. I hope you won't take too long of a break, or decide you're tired of it and not write it at all!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm glad you loved the epilogue! And that it was leaky for ya! I am taking something of a break, at least. This has been a wonderful journey and I have enjoyed every word. I'd love a glimpse into the future to see how Severus mends with Hermione's help. You've kept them both beautifully in character and there is a very special link with a basis for something more when Snape finds his feet a bit and Hermione has has a chance to grow up and live a little of the life she wants.Thank you so much.

She smiled warmly and asked if she could contact him even if she didn’t need anything, and he returned her smile and nodded.Great line! It is very nearly a perfectly satisfying ending, but you left so many questions unanswered it makes me wonder if you intend to add to the already voluminous series. I hope so, but if not, that's okay, too, obviously. Severus' Muggle adventure was quite entertaining.

Glad you liked it!As I've mentioned in various spots around, I've written a few hundred page draft of the sequel, but I don't know if I'll be posting it. We'll see after I finish the first draft. But I always think that some of the best endings are the ones that leave a few things open, anyway -- not essentials, of course, but ones that make you wonder what might happen next and how things might work out for all the various characters. I'm glad you found the Muggle adventure amusing. I also thought it was a way of emphasizing what Severus was going through, bringing it into relief, in a way. Thanks for all your reviews! TTFN!

Yay, my plane didn't crash and I lived to see the end of another MMADfan story! And now I get to read RaM in another new place. :)As Severus and Hermione took their walk and especially the final paragraph of the story, the words of Malcolm McGonagall came to me: "'you could probably just – ' Malcolm made a flicking motion with his little finger ' – tip him right over. If you wanted.'" For all the Severus+Hermione fanfiction I read, when I try to be purely and absolutely honest with myself (I don't do it too often, luckily), it isn't quite believable. I found it somehow comforting that at the end of your story they were friends. Friends on a path to love - but just friends! And that with alllllll the setup in An Act of Love too!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
I'm very happy your plane didn't crash!I'm glad you liked the ending. (And I agree about the realistc/believability, when we don't decide to put that aside and make-believe.) I'm glad you found the end of the story comforting. And they have come a long way in the months since Minerva had them begin working together, especially considering Severus's circumstances and his nature. There's hope for Severus!Very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks very much for reviewing!

This was a beautiful ending. I have to say ... there's something very affecting for me when stories incorporate Snape into non-magical experiences (like riding the bus); I'm not sure how to explain it or why, but that coupled with his thought processes had a very melancholic feel, it makes me desperately wish to see his (their) happiness written-out (but that's what imaginations are for, I suppose). Really though, this was a wonderful ending, thank you.

Cheers for posting! Sorry, couldn't resist the urge. I'm so sad to see this story end but I have a feeling there's more in the RaM universe that's begging to be written. If you should ever need ideas, I have a few dozen for RaM-ADMM stories. I know you're shocked.I thoroughly enjoyed the epilogue. It was nice to see the ceremony from Snape's point of view when Albus gave him the medal. awwww. The bit on the bus on the way to Hermione's was exactly like something that would happen on just an ordinary day and is one more reason why your stories are so popular. It's the little attention to details that makes them more realistic and enjoyable. I'm glad he decided to stay for a year and then decide. I think Hermione was right. He can stay and then when and if he leaves it will be on his own terms. And it leaves the story at a nice place, leaving us wondering (sorta) how things worked out.All in all... another brilliant story! Thanks for writing it and sharing it with us.Cheers,GLM

Very convincing depiction of Snape's inner space. I especially liked (well, 'liked' is the wrong word--'sympathized w/' is perhaps better) his self-recrimination over having dropped the wards and thus bearing some of the responsibility for the deaths among the defenders. And Neville's, Blaise's and Harry's speeches were all spot-on as well as being wonderful for Snape to hear. Clearly Poppy had her marching orders for her role next to Severus, and it's a good thing she was in place! YAAY for Severus's award, and for the way it was presented--both that the testimony came from harry, and for the way Minerva faced him and followed through on her promise to call him her friend and celebrate his deeds in front of all of wizarding society. Evil me pictures a little thought bubble next to Minerva's head, "Severus Snape, my dear friend," [and not too bad in bed considering the odd circumstances], "I am very happy..."More seriously....Albus was so sweet in this chapter. I'd love to know how the wizarding world is reacting to the revealing of his and Minerva's relationship, and exactly how they are revealing it--just these bits of barely-noticeable PDA and allowing folks to connect the dots? Rings? Deliberate leaks of info by friends and family? Blushing Albus--so cute!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
"Evil you" gave me a laugh! They finally registered their Muggle marriage with the Ministry and then Minerva told the Board of Governors at a meeting the previous week and the staff at that first relatively complete staff meeting Severus was about to go to in the last chapter. Necessary since Albus is moving into the Headmistress's rooms and people couldn't fail to notice that . . . Other than that, no formal announcements or anything, though new of it is no doubt spreading, probably somewhat overshadowed by other events, though.Yup, Poppy was told that unless Severus became genuinely physically sick, she was to make sure he stayed through the end because they had something special planned for him. A good loyal Hufflepuff! And one of the few people they knew Severus would tolerate bugging him like that.I'm glad you liked blushing Albus! Thanks for the review!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Death's Dominion)
Erratum:. . . though news of it is no doubt spreading.(That's what happens when I should have been in bed three hours ago! )

W/ no HoH duties, and no Dark Lord to be battling, and a competent Minister for M in place, and Albus divested of many of his former responsibilities....they'll have so much spare time they'll go mad! And they won't even need to be hiding and flooing from sitting room to office! (Being Headmistress and a Professor would be enough to keep normal folks busy, but these two have been so overcommitted for so long, they'll feel hopelessly lazy after a fairly short while!) Albus will be at high risk of meddling in his friends' lives to a degree not seen before, just out of boredom! I guess that means they will need to have LOTS of STEAMING-HOT MMAD-sex, to keep themselves occupied, work out excess energy, and make up for lost opportunities over the recent busy years. See why I'm anticipating the sequel?

LOL! Well, it would have to be in another, parallel sequel if you're looking forward to HOT MMAD-sex. Which I had actually planned to write, but which now will be on the back burner, keeping warm . . . Anyway, the current sequel does not focus on Albus and Minerva, although they do pop up from time to time!Albus and Minerva usually Flooed between her study an his bedroom when they were doing most of their sneaking around -- his office might be occupied, hence their little private Floo network -- and he wouldn't have to worry about anyone in her sitting room and could sneak out of her quarters w/o going out there if she had unexpected guests. They'll have to work harder to have their "clandestine meetings"! haha! And you're certainly right about all that excess time! In fact, Albus does try to meddle a little in the sequel, subtly, but there are things he doesn't know, though he does guess, or hope -- although Minerva does know -- but he is confused by certain things. But that is a sub-sub-sub-plot. haha! And the story may never be posted, although I'll likely finish writing it, since it's three-quarters done already. However, if I do an ADMM sequel, I'll certainly post that! It will likely be shorter, though, and it's more probably that I'll do the RaM sequel first, or at least some post-RaM, pre-AAoL stories set in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. But in the meantime, I'll be taking something of a break from fanfic, I think. We'll see! But I'm sure there will still be some STEAMING HOT MMAD-sex in the future, so you won't be entirely deprived!

Erratum:. . . though news of it is no doubt spreading.(That's what happens when I should have been in bed three hours ago! )

W/ no HoH duties, and no Dark Lord to be battling, and a competent Minister for M in place, and Albus divested of many of his former responsibilities....they'll have so much spare time they'll go mad! And they won't even need to be hiding and flooing from sitting room to office! Well., Severus finally got what he deserved, recognition from his own and others, and a special award. Wonder if he fainted?
