It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
Interesting take on Severus. I can see how such a thing would drive one mad, but as they note, he has done a lot of things and come out relatively unscathed, so what is up with this? Dumbledore and his evasive actions when it comes to talking about Snape makes one wonder what is going on with these two. Off to find out ...
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Exactly right! What is up with this? After all, Slytherin's use any means to achieve their ends, or so the sorting hat would have us believe.
Oh dear! The secrets and lies are already piling up and we are only in chapter two.I was surprised to see Draco in on things with Snape. Good for them for getting her out of there, and good for her for not resisting. I was a bit nervous that she would be discovered while attached to Snape. And why does he keep calling her a whore? Hmmm ...
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I confess, cannon Draco is a miserable sod, and I can't help making him a bit more than he is. It's irresistable. This whore of a writer thanks you! :D
Thirteen Death Eaters ... I'm pretty sure even Moody would concede that it really doesn't matter whether she has her wand or not."Fetch the boy." What?!?! How about, "Hey guys, Hermione is here and you should come rescue her before I have to do bad things to her." Or maybe this isn't that kind of story ... gulp!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Yes, I'm so known for my angsty dark fic after all... What's that? I'm not?! Silly me! :D
yep, it had to be that scar. Poor Harry. I hope something can be done for him!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I think so too. But JKR just don't see it that way. :D
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
JKR is...well, perhaps the less said the better. What was all that crap about Dumbledore being gay?! I mean, okay so it might have occurred to some adults that this was a possibility but we don't need it for the story. It's a kid book and talking about sexuality in a kid book might be perfectly fine if it was pertinent but it isn't. I loved the actors' reactions. David Thewlis thought for sure it would be Lupin who was gay. ROFL.
I read this from start to finish for the first time over the last couple of days, because I had not found this site when you first started posting. I'm glad, because I would have not liked being left hanging for so long. But I must admit that I am guilty of leaving my own readers hanging with one of my own stories. I am working on it, but I didn't want to continue posting until it was finished. After about two years, I've got about six more chapters to go...I agree with all of your points about book 7. But I have seen both parts of the DH movies, and I must say that Warner Bros. did a great job in their interpretation. I like their version of her mess better than hers (and springing the Deathly Hallows on us after six books was "cheatin" in the extreme). But seeing DH part 2 has made it more difficult in my mind to see Hermione and Severus together. I just hate that! Even my husband, who is not a fan of Potter verse, thinks Hermione and Ron are a horrible mis-match, but the movie does a very convincing job of showing Severus so in love with Lily that he could never love anyone else.Anyway - enough of my soap box speach. I love your story. Your idea that Severus could move Albus' soul into his own body is brilliant, and it make perfect sense that Goblins would have come up with some form of magic that could do the things you described with the vault door. Brilliant! You mentioned that you work with at-risk kids. Is this where you came up with some of Severus "mad" mannerisms? I had a friend who was severly bi-polar. His emotions could go from high to low, or from friendly to cruel, in a hearbeat. It was scary sometimes. But the child-like actions of Severus are similar to other types of mental disorders. No matter your source, I'm glad he's back to his old self, only a bit more loving. Your love scene was pulse racing, btw. ;)Keep up the good work. Hope you finish before too long.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I didn't like leaving my readers hanging so long, either. But today I finally finished the last chapter and epilogue. Hopefully they will be posted soon.Your comments make me want to see the last movie...maybe. It's got to be better than the book! In my mind, Lily aside, movie Snape and Granger never stood a chance due to their age difference being twice that of the difference in the books.Oddly enough, I wrote most of this fic before I started working with at risk kids. I was a theatrical costumer before that. Severus' madness came out of my own murky imagination. I have little experience with mental disorders. So much for "write what you know!"Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for reading!
Oh dear is right! Well of course there would be a bit of confusion at first. I look forward to seeing how they work things out.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm so glad that you are enjoying it!
oh my! Well, this is interesting! I can't wait to see what happens.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Good! That means I did my job! :)
oooohh noooo!
oh, this is such a fantastic read I couldn't stop all afternoon, and now its 3AM!! So glad that Severus' madness has taught him to give and receive consideration, friendship and even love. He might even admit it Albus is an arse to expect that a so severely deranged soul could accomplish that resurrection, but wow, Severus DID succeed.I might re-read this and throw in a few more reviews. I certainly have more praise and thoughts... but right now I yearn for my pillow.

Thank you,
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
! And thank you for that typo spotting back on Chapter 24.In my mind, this was Albus' idea of a Hail mary pass. Unlikely to succeed, but the only chance at all.And yes, I think Albus is a bit of an arse! :D
oh my. That was exciting. I'm glad Bill didn't bring Aurors. He's too smart for that anyway.
ooh, that was creepy and weird. How scary that Severus would give her that and not think to warn her of it's dangers. If Severus was sane he'd never have done that. Excellent story!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Exactly! Silly mad Severus!

I find silly mad Severus to be rather endearing. He's SO like a person with autism, though. He doesn't make eye contact and talks to the ceiling. He has trouble calling people by name. My son wouldn't call me anything until he was about 3. He could talk a blue streak but I think he thought I was an extension of him and when I'd talk to him I'd say, "I'm Mama" and he'd yell "NO!" with a look of panic. Severus gets upset inexplicably. He's probably overwhelmed by a lot of sensory things. I mean he's got two souls floating around inside him so he's probably very confused and distracted. Poor thing. Hermione, though, did a LOT of great stuff that people whose kids are autistic know all about. Just stopping and THINKING sometimes is all it takes.
Trollop ;)
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
It makes me giggle everytime I write it. :)
Interesting. Hmmm, does it have to do with the spell or just Severus' own brand of madness? I can't wait to read more and fine otu but I really must get some sleep!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I noticed that you didn't. While I'm crazy flattered, get some sleep! It will still be there in the morning!
I'm enjoying this so much I've stayed up all night. I need to go get some sleep as well!!
Poor Severus. Maybe there is some hope he will recover.
I've often wondered about that whole flying off the astronomy tower thing. It's like a red herring. Weird. I look forward to reading more!
LOL. Oh dear. I do hope he can remain calm while brewing!
Hah! The Whore Who Lived!! Totally cracks me up. I can't believe Hermione didn't think of other options. I'm glad Snape stopped her.
OH MY GOD! Well, I'm glad I didn't read this before the next part was finished. What a cliff-hanger! :)I'm glad she didn't get the opportunity to try destroying the thing, though!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I'm afraid that, like old timey serial writers, I am over fond of cliff hangers.
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I'm okay with cliff hangers. I've read other stories you've written and loved them. Did you write one with a pink fuzzy flamingo or something? Severus turns into a plush toy and hilarity ensues. Anyway, I think I need to explore other stories you've written!
Oh my goodness. Poor thing. That was very very mean of Ron. I'm glad Hermione could figure out how to help Severus.
Too funny!
I knew there had to be an explanation. If anyone can think this through it's Hermione. It's kind of like dealing with a child who has autism. So many things are about fear and anxiety but you have to stop and take the time to find out why they're behaving that way. You can't just force the issue. Well done. I love this! I have a kiddo who has asperger syndrome. He isn't like this about baths but sometimes he's freaking out and it takes a LOT of patience to find out why.
I hope Severus can find some peace eventually. I'm glad everyone is working together. I will enjoy seeing the challenges Severus presents to the inhabitants of Grimmauld Place.
oh boy, this is more complicated than anyone thought. I love this story. Poor Snape is so unhinged he can't take care of himself and honestly, I can see how his life might do that to him. It's an excellent story so far.
I keep saying it, but Poor Severus. He's such a mess. I hope they can kill off old Moldywart and free Severus from all obligation. Maybe he can regain his sanity.
