It's possible in wartime that madness eventually comes for us all. Yet some madness might be carefully purchased; some sanity knowingly sacrificed. This story is such a tale.

I'm a 53 year old woman who wrote fanfic for years and adored doing it. While I lost the heart for fanfic after book 7 came out, I am still writing, and can be found at http://julianneqjohnson.com

Reviews for The Price of Madness
This is a lovely, lovely story and I'm getting fonder of it with each chapter! I love your characterization and all the feelings that come out to play. And the part about what he might want her to do, and what it turned out to be, really made me smile :) Thank you!
I'm enjoying this story so much! I fail to describe how well you've captured Severus' madness; it makes so much sense. And waaah how I wish he'll allow Hermione to make it better. So good. Thank you.
Brilliant! I've stayed up ridiculously late to read this the whole way through. Funny, endearing and clever...much better than the canon version. I like your characters better too :) I'm glad you're finishing it.
Wow! This was a wonderfully action-packed chapter! I was practically on the edge of my seat and biting my nails during that final confrontation between Bella and Hermione! That curse was horrible, but wonderfully well described. And the last lines: perfect. Both a cliffhanger & a relief at the same time -- a very difficult thing to accomplish! Thanks for the great new chapter, Pooka!

And I neglected to mention how very much I loved seeing Severus be mad again! He was very funny, even more so than before, because this time, he was just acting the part. Some excellent lines for him!

I'm still really looking forward to the next chapters -- and the resolution of the cliffie! I hope you are well!
You know, if I were Hermione, in the years to come I'd miss the old Mad Snape. He's kind of endearing.
“Must you shout, Lord Whore? I’m trying to study this fascinating shrubbery.”
Hee hee! Severus puts on a very good show of being totally mad. Speaking of mad, what the heck did that bitch Bellatrix hit Hermione with?! Thank goodness Hagrid came to the rescue. Lovely faked duel between Severus and Draco. No doubt practice makes perfect. ;)
It would appear that Harry has learned how to make an entrance! Wonder if he learned that from Severus.
OMG! When I found you had updated I actually had to squee a bit. I reread the whole story in one, even though I have to work tomorrow and it is now almost 2 am. :)
I've been checking back for updates for over a year, because I really really love what you write, so thanks for my fave fic-
still waiting to find out about the whole whore thing though..
btw "you're dead" "I was, I got better" hahahahaha brill!!
"I got better"
Hahahaha. So Monty Python. One of my very favorites of all of their funny lines.
I agree with you that it is sad to see this story end. It has been such an original ride.
And I have to admit that Voldemort "having his worst day ever (except for that time he got killed, and then got better)" is way too funny. It will have to go down into the annals.
Great job.
I think I like this battle scene much better than the movie's one....
You are a much kinder, gentler author than I would be. Given the opportunity, I'd have had an angry Hagrid break Bella beyond repair for having hurt Hermione. Oops, he didn't know his own strength sort of thing.
Harry's got the blues? Earlier he passes through Albus' office, collects a bristle-less brush, skips out on half the confrontation, and now he's gone and brought the blues to an otherwise sun-shiny battle. What's the boy up to?
Ooooh!
“Must you shout, Lord Whore? I’m trying to study this fascinating shrubbery.”
“Forget the bush, you imbecile!” Voldemort raged. “Kill that bastard of a Malfoy!”
“The boy?” Severus asked, puzzled. “But he’s the boy.”
“He’s a traitor and must pay for his crimes!”
“I suppose so,” Severus said with a sigh. Reluctantly leaving the spindleberry, Severus looked around until he saw Draco. “Boy!” he shouted, “The crazy old whore says that I have to kill you! Get your arse over here so that I can do so!”
That charming exchange had me chortling like a loon in the wee hours of the morning, I'll have you know. Too funny! Severus faking crazy Sev is just as hilarious as the original.
Thank you for a truly great chapter, I was almost at the end of my chair following the figth. Severus charade as the still mad-as-a-hatter Potions Master was priceless, as serious as the figth were, that made me laugh. A temper tantrum throwing Voldemort also added to the mirt.
Absolutely brilliant and I can't wait to read more.
Wow!!! Draco and Severus were probably too busy to notice that Lucius had gone, and I assume Lucius did nothing to help his son. Very relieved that Hagrid was able to help save Order lives. Harry.... what has he done to make the sunlight go strange and blueish? Hermione may want to see what Harry does, but I am concerned that Bellatrix's spell may damage her too much if left too long. Eeps!
Thank you for the new chapter!! You are brilliant.
Oooh, a boneless curse would be brutal, wouldn't it? I hope that whatever Bella did to her is something they recognize and can fix. I would have loved to see the look on Voldie's face when Dumbledore appeared. I'm thrilled to know that this is complete and coming soon. Yay for you!

Thank you for sticking with it! :)
Blimey is right! I cannot wait to see what happens next. But mostly I'm so happy and (dare I say it?) proud to see you finishing this wonderful story. Please accept my heartfelt thanks and congratulations. You've made this fan very, very happy.

You've made this pook very happy! Thanks for sticking with it!
Why does that damn Voldemort always have to go sticking his snakey head into peoples lives when there are lemons to be had. Somebody should kill that guy ... quickly.
Thank you for updating!! I can not wait for your next chapter. I reread a few of your other stories before delving back into madness and I am so glad I did. Wonderful storylines, rich text, and always a slight twist to keep you on the edge of your seat.I hope you are back.

You are the sweetest! Thanks!
excellent story so far, honestly, I hope you do finish this. I agree with you about a lot of what JKR wrote. She did leave a lot of things hanging that I thought would go somewhere. SOMEWHERE!! Jeez. She spent half the book camping. Nearly all of the camping was cut out of the film and my daughter and I were SO happy about it!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
When I mutter to my sweetie about my fanfic, and trying to figure out what to do about something, he says "Have them camp!" Sometimes he adds "and then kill everybody!" I love him, he's hysterical. At least I get to make use of a lot of foreshadowing that JKR never took anywhere. And the fic is finished, the last chapters are in my lovely beta's hands!
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
Yay!!! I can't wait to read the rest.I do seem to remember you picking up on story lines that JKR abandoned. She seemed to be phoning this one in. I do like the movie, though, despite a lot of the deaths being completely unnecessary. She could have illustrated the point with remus and tonks a bit better. Teddy was completely out of the film which makes it easier because at least there was no orphan. Splitting up the twins was the hardest part of the book for me. I was reasonably sure that someone as tragic as Snape would have to die.
Very good. I like that Severus retains some of the good things everyone saw when he was mad while not actually being mad any more.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
That was important to me. I don't think one can run mad without it changing you. Thanks for reading!
Oh, it's so clever to have Ron stay behind here!! When the travellers are back, you can so well alternate between debate and report--a really brilliant setup when facts and interpretation are to be presented! As a bonus, we hear of Nigeluns and get to know the library, and as Ron IS bored, it doesn't matter that the text becomes a bit longish to catch all the details we need later. a MINOR comment: I think it is not canon, though, that the observers physically disappear into the Pensieve. It happens only their imagination. A.D. gets Harry out of the courtrooms by touching his shoulder. Also Snape interrupts Harry as soon as he returns, and it would have to be by physical contact, I think. But your version works very well here!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
About the Pensive- from Chapter 30, Goblet of Fire- "Harry was thrown forward and pitched headfirst into the substance inside the basin." And when Dumbledore retrieves him- "There was an Albus Dumbledore sitting on his right, watchin Crouch's son being dragged away by the dementors -- and there was an Albus Dumbledore on his left looking right at him." At least from Harry's viewpoint he falls in. And Albus actually enters the Pensieve scene to reclaim him. But one could make an arguement that either that is litteral, or it's a matter of perception, and actual bodies don't travel into the Pensieve. I chose the former because it seems more interesting to me.And yes, that library scene is me trying to set the scene a bit, in a not too deadfully boring way. :)Thanks!
Here, you're giving us a great demo of the way the male teenage mind works! At times everything goes smoothly, but there are also near-unsurmountable blocks and barriers. Poor Hermione talks like a masseur who works on self-regenerating kinks. Diplomatic doesn't even begin to describe her tactics. Godness, if we add Remus' and Minverva's secrecity she must feel like the only sane person there is!
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I was proud of this Hermione. All lecturey, sure, but also very patient. After all, she's used to Ron and Harry being a bit thick sometimes, lol! Thanks!
Well things are playing out nicely. Hermione is very observant and is able to sort out the important things from the rest. Harry is coming around in his willingness to share the info she needs to solve this mystery. Ron, well he has matured nicely and even when he was bored he didn't get up to any trouble :) Once they figure all of this out, I wonder what they will do with it. And when is Remus coming back to give the ok to talk about what happened at Hermione's parents house? This has me very intrigued and I am glad there are many chapters ahead already available.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
I like mysteries. Mysteries are fun! And I get sickto death of winging Harry and Ron, as if they never grow up at all, so I like letting them mature a little. Thanks for all of your kind reviews. I do love hearing what people think!
What did happen in the cave that is such a big deal? I can understand him wanting to keep things private, and maybe carrying some guilt and such, but why is it such a big deal? I hope he comes around. Hermione's brain is working overtime.
Response from PlaidPooka (Author of The Price of Madness)
Cannon Harry has never reacted well to guilt. I took advantage. It's the Slytherin in me. ;)
