Minerva has just finished her first term teaching. A series of misunderstandings leads to an embarrassing moment, injured feelings, regret, growing understanding, then resolution. A Minerva McGonagall fic set in 1957, with forays into the past. More than a Romance; stories within stories. Features Minerva, Albus, and Poppy, with appearances by Slughorn, Grubbly-Plank, Hagrid, Flitwick, Moody, Riddle, Grindelwald, and other canon characters. Not DH-compliant. Disregards DH.
Nineteen Parts.
Most content T-rated, but ratings rise to M and MA for several later chapters. Overall M rating reflects later content.
Pertinent warnings in individual chapter summaries.

Reviews for Resolving a Misunderstanding
His Miss, eh? Does Wilspy already know, or it's just how she talks?
Love the growing relationship and extraordinary trust between them.
Good chappie! :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
House-elves are such strange and enigmatic creatures, aren't they?
Thanks for the review!
Once again a wonderful chapter. I so love Dumbledore and her father teasing Minerva and the difference in her reaction to it. This story is absolutely addictive:) I eagerly await the next chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. And isn't it funny the different reactions we have when different people tease us -- even people who we care about/who care about us?
I'm going to upload the next couple chapters today, so hopefully you won't go through withdrawal! *grin*
Thank you for your review!
I think the title's cute, lol.
Good work on the chapter, as usual.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! -- the title just wouldn't leave my brain until I used it -- just imagine Sade singing "Smooth Apparater" and nothing else over and over again! (just kidding!)
Hehe. Potatoes and leeks, eh?
Seems like Minnie's dad is more perceptive than either Albus or her, lol.
Good chapter! :D :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
It takes a little time -- but not much -- before Merwyn realizes how truly perceptive he was, though, and a great many chapters before we see it. I'm glad you liked the chapter! There's another one in queue; it will probably be up sometime this week, I imagine. Thanks for the review!
Cheers for posting.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
You really needn't say the same thing for the next 130 chapters, honestly.
I truly love this story! Though I´m an avid SS/HG reader I was sucked into this at once. Great writing! Keep the chapters coming:)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks very much! I'm glad you found the story and are enjoying it. (Pass the word on to other SS/HG readers! *grin*)
I read a lot of SS/HG, myself -- in fact, I was an exclusive SS/HG reader for a long time!
There should be an update every few days as the chapters go through the validation queue.
Aww, poor Minnie. Hopefully they can communicate about the insult soon.
Good chapter like always. :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Oh, they will . . . but in the meantime, we get to learn more about how their relationship developed.
Thanks for the review!
Were those unshed tears from the horrors of war and being tired, or the realization that he loved Minnie, but couldn't act while she was still a student and lamenting the really large age gap?
Good chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Horrors of war, as you say. She's still just his sweet & particularly talented student at the moment.
Thanks for you review!
Hehe. It. Silly Minerva, subduing It doesn't work as well as acknowledging It and then dealing with It in a reasonable manner by deciding to act or not.
Interesting name for her house-elf. Where'd it come from, or is it just made up?
Another excellent chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! Glad you liked the chapter.
Minerva will eventually come to the same conclusion about It that you have. *grin*
As far as the name goes, unlike most names in the story which are either real or derived from a real word, the house-elf names are pretty much just made up.
Very Interesting. This is the first time I have read any fiction of this particular ship, as I only tend to read Snape ones and I have never really had a reason to read this ship, but I was browsing and it looked interesting. I must say, you have definatley captured my attention. You write beautifully. I love your characterisations and the way you explain the plot. I feel I must thank you for helping me to descover this ship. Not to mention, given me another obsession. lol. I can't wait for more. Well done. This is an excellent piece of fiction. :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks very much! I started out reading Snape fics almost exclusively, myself.
I'm glad you're enjoying the story -- I hope your "obsession" doesn't get out of hand! *grin*
There's another chapter in the queue, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for more.
Thank you for reviewing! :)
OMG i love your stories. I've read all the ones that have to do with the Resolving a Misunderstanding universe here but this one is by far my favourite so I thought I would write a review here.
Gertrude and Malcom are goals!!! lol i know its been a long time since you updated or added another story here but I love all the once that have to do with Resolving a Misunderstanding universe. Thank you for taking us readers along for the journey. I hope one day you will write and/or update another story here. I would really like to know about more about Gertrude and Malcom and their years together. I'm sure Malcom kept things interesting. lol.
I'm also feel that seeing more about Gertude's parents, her mom in particular would be interesting, especially becasue she is a pure blood who entertaines Malfoys and Blacks but doesn't seem to take to their way of thinking...It's nice to know that it wasn't just Gertude who was a good Slytherine but her mom, father and brother as well. That was refreshing.
Also the way you put Minerva and Albus together through all of these misunderstandings is pure genious. I love it.
Thanks again for the beautiful stoies. I'm going to reread these for sure one day :)
arrg! Albus! What is wrong with the man?! Didn't he noticed that SHE kissed him first!? Hope things get better soon!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
He is very confused. And he didn't notice. And things will be on the road to recovery very soon.
Thanks for the review!
Oh poor Minerva. Finally getting somewhere only to have Albus get all noble, again. Her visit with Quin will be quite interesting, to say the least.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, very interesting! And in the next chapter, we see her arrive on his doorstep, and his reaction, among other things.
Thanks for the review!
If there is any way these two can screw up a communication of affection, they will do it.It was lovely. It was romantic. It had such potential and then aaaaaaargh! Now where has Albus got himself off to?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
You will find out in a couple chapters where Albus has taken himself. Until then, we follow Minerva and learn what happens to her.
I'm glad you thought it was lovely and romantic until the Moment of Aaaaargh! haha! Yup, a moment of blurt on Minerva's part would have been preferable and perhaps less ambiguous to Albus. (Something along the lines of, "I'm in love with you, Albus. Now, will you stop leading me on and tell me how you feel before I explode?" lol)
Thanks for the review! Next chapter up either tomorrow evening or Friday morning, depending on my RL schedule. (I'm about 30k words up on the story, so I can take a break from writing. But not from RL!)
Please tell me that this is that terrible moment where everything goes to shit right before everything gets better. Probably not though huh. Especially since Albus has gone off in a fit of self-hatred and Minerva's gone off to cry and talk to Quin.
BTW, I really liked the bit with the centaurs.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
This is the crisis, the turning-point. Glad you liked the centaurs! :)
Thanks for the review!
ouch ouch ouch! did i say ouch? albus was quite brutalbut i'm very glad minerva was equally brutal back!
these two don't know how to communicate...
can't wait for their next encounter....should be interesting!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
At least Mienrva didn't leave him with any doubt about how she felt! Much better than in the first chapter! LOL
The next one should be up on Wednesday.
Thank you, as always, for the review!
oh but isn't minerva pathetic! in a good desperately in love way, but still....you've captured her hopeless infatuation very well. it seems she's never heard of the expression, 'in for a penny, in for a pound.' i mean honestly....she's can't possibly think albus is that dense when she goes on petulantly about her being just a 'whim', etc. but of course, we know he apparently is that dense! only when it comes to love of course
oh but what a interesting shower fantasy you've written there...
i love quin! i think i've said that already, but i'm so glad he's still in this story
oh and can't wait for albus to find out minerva spent the night with quin
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, and Minerva feels a good deal of time feeling pathetic, in precisely that way!
Glad you liked the shower fantasy! And Quin, of course. And he's got more of a role to play . . .
Thanks much for the review!
Wow, this has given new meaning to the title of this fic! They're positively mired in misunderstanding now! I suspected the morning after would not be pretty! If that was Minerva remaining calm and not giving in to her anger, that's a little scary! You did forwarn things would get bleak...I'm not sure what Hogwarts would make of Malcolm, but it could be fun. I didn't anticipate that!Hmm, does Quin have a bit of a crush on her after all? That was an interesting comment. The door portrait was hysterical. He's clearly been a bit off balance, but now he's flipped. Our poor couple, events as a whole turned against them today--thirteen turned out to be an unlucky number after all.I like Fawkes, nice addition to the chapter/mood.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, well, it does take our couple to get to the real root of their misunderstanding, but they are getting there now. Painfully. And there's more of it to come.
I'm glad you liked the door portrait! He does have his own little story, which may (or may not) be told. But he's not quite as cracked as he appears. Well, he is, but in his own little universe, he's quite . . . hmm, I was about to say "sane," but that description wouldn't work, either! lol!
Yup, the Ides of August did not turn out well for the poor couple!
Thanks for the review!
Hehehe, I guess the Slient Knight is not so silent after all. It's very cute that he is defending Minerva's honour. Excellent chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks very much! Yeah, the Silent Knight has select occasions on which he is not silent, and this was one on which he was certainly not silent!
Well, I think we all saw that jealous fit coming. Another great chapter, I especially enjoyed the knight's behavior.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Glad you liked the knight -- he's been waiting in the wings to do his bit! lol
Thanks very much!
Malcolm as the DADA instructor. A good choice. After all this time as a teacher, Gertrude already knows the best hiding places in the castle that might have a clean wall available. Would Slytherin lose points if they are caught?I can only shake my head at Albus. For a smart wizard, he sure is dumb. He really blew it, this time. He needs to come clean with Minerva or he will probably have done permanent damage to their relationship. In Minerva's shoes, I'd finish out the next school year and put out my resume. Staying is only going to make it all the harder to get him out of her system. She can't keep living halfway.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
LOL! Slytherin and Gryffindor both, I imagine! But I think that between Gertrude's knowledge of the castle and Malcolm's knowledge of charms, they'd be able to avoid detection!
And Albus did blow it. And it will get a bit worse before it gets better. But it will!
Albus certainly does have his weaknesses and blind spots. But nobody' s perfect!
I'd really like a visit inside Albus' head to see what he is thinking. Minerva has all but conked him on the head with her feelings.Obviously, staying overnight at Quin's is a mistake and bound to be misunderstood. You are doing an interesting interpretation of social mores in 1950's wizarding Britain. In many stories, wizarding Britain is positively Victorian in attitudes towards sex. I remember my mother (Midwestern American) telling me about when my father was dating her in the 1950's. He was an Army Lieutenant and would travel 200+ miles from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to see her in Chicago. He'd be so tired, Mom would ask her mother if he could just sleep on the sofa. Grandma's response was always "no", that a woman's reputation would not allow for such a thing.I should mention that I was born 8 1/2 months after they got married, so I'm not certain who really got their way (snicker).A good chapter. It feels like we're building to something critical.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I do see them as being fairly conservative, but human, and the Muggle sixties didn't invent premarital/extramarital sex. LOL! Ella certainly did assume that if the two were having sex, it meant they were getting married -- hopefully! Haha! Also, I think there is a difference between young/youngish people and sexual relations and older ones who are established in their own lives. I also figure in my version of the magical universe that they have had better birth control for a lot longer than the Muggles have. That also makes a big difference simply because of the consequences. I think, too, that it would depend on one's individual background and family and so forth. Remember, too, that Egeria was happily unmarried to Merwyn for years, although he wasn't as happy with that state of affairs, and it was their agreement that if she became pregnant, they would marry, so she stopped whatever measures she had been taking to keep from getting pregnant. And they married, obviously. And then Maisie didn't marry her daughter's father, and although Siofre finds that disturbing, Egeria doesn't.
Anyway, I like the amalgam I've made. *grin*
And you are right, we are building to something critical.
Wow, there's no way that Albus is going to take Minerva staying out all night after a date very well. No matter how much she insists that Quin is just a friend. Excellent chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
You think that might cause him pause? You may be right! Thanks very much for the review!
Uh-oh. I think I foresee the dark moment, or one of them. Albus is going to know she spent the night at Quin's--or at least that she did not come back to Hogwart's until the morning! OK, so this chapter we have a good example of their bringing out the worse in each other, or at least how quickly they can push each other into brooding. At least Minerva is making an effort to talk to Albus more directly. Quin is lovely, as always. He needs to mediate for Albus, too, and they might get somewhere a little faster! Of course, I don't think Minerva is going to be able to, er, contain herself for much longer either! An-ti-ci-pation...
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
There is definitely a dark cloud looming on the horizon!
Thanks for the review!
And you're right about the an-ti-ci-pa-ation! (makin' you wait! haha!) Not long before the next update, though -- likely Monday.
