Minerva has just finished her first term teaching. A series of misunderstandings leads to an embarrassing moment, injured feelings, regret, growing understanding, then resolution. A Minerva McGonagall fic set in 1957, with forays into the past. More than a Romance; stories within stories. Features Minerva, Albus, and Poppy, with appearances by Slughorn, Grubbly-Plank, Hagrid, Flitwick, Moody, Riddle, Grindelwald, and other canon characters. Not DH-compliant. Disregards DH.
Nineteen Parts.
Most content T-rated, but ratings rise to M and MA for several later chapters. Overall M rating reflects later content.
Pertinent warnings in individual chapter summaries.

Reviews for Resolving a Misunderstanding
Gluffy is my new favorite house elf. It's good that there has finally been some communication between the two that hasn't been over-edited for propriety. GO GLUFFY!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Gluffy is a funny little fellow, and quite handy to have around!
Thanks for reviewing! The next chapter should be up very soon.
I have to say that I both approve of and greatly admire this pace you're setting of a chapter per day. I don't think I could ever do it myself, but I certainly enjoy it for reading! I'll be curious to see if a house-elf "happens" to send Minerva's letter to Albus anyway, but I suppose I'll have to wait for that. Thanks as always for a lovely chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks -- glad you are enjoying it. (I am posting more quickly than I'm writing at the moment, BTW, so it's not quite as impressive as it may seem! LOL! But I have a lot written and ready to be posted, so there should be fairly frequent updates for a bit longer, then it will go to a more usual one chapter a week, or so.)
Thank you very much for reviewing!
Response from HermioneDancr (Reviewer)
I don't supposes this is actually a "review," but since it's responding to a response to a review I left I suppose I can say it's not spam (I hope not!)...I only just now realized what your screenname stands for. MMAD as in Minerva/Albus. I'd always read it as Mmad, like mad with a long M at the beginning. *headdesk*
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
No, not spam! And it gave me a giggle, so that's a good thing! And it's kind of a play on words, which is why its "MMADfan" and not "ADMMfan," which is not only unpronouncable, but lacks the "MMADness" factor. *grin* I chose it when I started writing this story, actually, since my other screenname that I usually used was boring and I wanted something fun.
Thanks for the amusing note!
The hat seems to get talked into or out of placing students into appropriate Houses often enough. Perhaps it needs its spells updated? The guest roster is getting nastier all the time. All we need is a murder to solve in the movie in my head!Well done.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I think that people are combinations (obviously) of traits, and at the age of 11, we're still pretty malleable in terms of which traits can be nurtured and brought out, so if someone is pretty evenly split between a couple Houses, their personal preference probably would play a role in which House they were placed. If there are forty new students per year, and this happened every other year (which I think would be more frequent than it would "really" happen), that's still only 1.25% of the students sorted. (Yeah, it appears I have too much time on my hands . . . actually, I'm procrastinating doing the things I need to be doing, so figuring the percentages seemed reasonable! hahahaha!)
Glad you're enjoying the story! (Damn, I didn't think to have a murder . . . not exactly . . . and not at the Gamps' . . . and not for a while yet!)
Thank you for all of your reviews!
Now that letter to Albus was this close to being a love letter. If he can't take a hint, I shall thump him one.Oh my. Minerva is having a holiday with the future Death Eater crowd and just admitted to having muggleborns in her background. It sounds like Gertie has seen the signs and come to her own conclusions about Minerva and Albus' mutual affections. I do believe she was just telling Minerva to take the initiative. It would certainly make Albus happy if she did.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Gertie is very astute, but Minerva hears everything she says through her own filters and preconceptions about both Slytherins and Gertrude, herself. So . . . Gertie can only do so much.
It's good to have a reminder of the gentleman waiting back home, given Quin's rather overwhelming presence. In the movie in my mind, Albus is played by Richard Harris. A tad younger than in COS - handsome fellow!I wonder what Albus saw in Valeriana that he would have spent more than ten minutes in her company?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Richard Harris was an excellent Dumbledore. I find Gambon unattractive and his portrayal of Dumbledore cringe-worthy.
When I first started reading the books, I pictured Albus as a combination of Peter O'Toole and Richard Harris, so I was pleased when RH was cast. Yup, very handsome fellow!
That is a puzzle, isn't it? But men (and women, for that matter) can be peculiar . . . of course, she does bear a very superficial resemblance to Minerva. And she's clever . . . .
Oooh! Valeriana is EVIL.Quin is an outrageous flirt - convincing Minerva to play along that his flirting is only a pretense to cover the fact that the flirting is real. The comedy of manners is many layers deep!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Valerianna IS deliciously evil, isn't she?
And yes, Quin is an outrageous flirt -- and a bit blind to the idea that his flirting may be real.
Glad you're enjoying the Gamp chapters!
This story has become like a 1930's or 40's black and white movie in my head. It is one of those films where everyone is dressed impeccably and conversation is brilliant, but biting. No one is quite what they seem. I am casting the characters. Let's see....Anthony Hopkins is Quin - he can do accents brilliantly and is an absolute chameleon as an actor. If Minerva weren't already brilliantly played by Maggie Smith, I would picture her as Katherine Hepburn.Valeriana would be played by Bette Davis, giving everyone a bumpy ride.Dame Judi Dench would be Gertie.I'm sure others will occur later. This so reminds me of one of those movies where conversation is used in the place of knives and battle axes!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Interesting casting -- if you'd like to see a couple banners I made for RaM, one of which includes a picture of "Quin," go to my Potter Place photo album. I think you'll be interested to see who I used to depict Minerva as a young woman. (Kate Hepburn!) I love Anthony Hopkins, and he wouldn't be bad -- of course, quite a bit earlier in his career -- but I always see and hear someone rather different. I picture Valerianna as being sort of Sian Philips. I've been trying to picture a good Gertie, but no one quite fits my mental image of her, which is quite specific, with her height, "sturdiness," iron grey hair, etc. Just can't come up with an appropriate actress for her.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it!
Nice Chapter. I admit I'm looking forward to Minerva seeing Albus again... I love tension!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! And when Minerva sees Albus again, there will be some tension bouncing back and forth, so you should be quite happy! But I think you'll like the way this sequence of chapters ends -- we get to see more of the lovely Valerianna.
“‘Almost entirely’ is not entirely, though, Gertrude,” Minerva replied somewhat sternly.I do believe that that is similar to one of Keira Knightly's lines in POTC, I don't remember which one though...I'll have to go back and watch them all when I get a chance so I can find it
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Okay, help out the popular-culture-impaired old person here -- who is Keira Knightly and what is POTC? I watch Ugly Betty and the History Channel! LOL! I'm sure that that line has been said many times over the course of history; I've said it myself many a time. Hee!
Thanks for the review!
Response from hermione278 (Reviewer)
POTC is Pirates of the Caribbean movie trilogy and Keira Knightly is one of the stars...she plays Elizabeth Swann =Dand Harry Potter is pop culture :P and I'm watching Ugly Betty right now xD but I don't have cable :(
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Ah, but HP is series of books. That's somewhat different. Besides, I'm pop culture-impaired, not living in a cave. *grin* Also reading doesn't require the same effort that keeping up with all of the movie stars does! Especially all the female stars, whom I always confuse with each other. Give me a big name hunk, though (not too young), and I'll probably know him.
I think I'm one of the dozen people in the US who has not seen a single Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I do have the first one on my Netflix list, I think. And I know that Johnny Depp is in it!!!
This was a fun Ugly Betty rerun. (I do watch some other stuff, of course, but my sister makes fun of me all the time for not knowing most of the current big stars.)
I'm afraid I'm pretty horrible about stopping to leave reviews around here, but after all these chapters I figured I'd at least drop in and say how much I'm enjoying this story. I've been doing some research in the Lexicon recently, and I was tickled when I noticed that Gamp is an actual pureblood surname and that many of the characters in this chapter actually exist in canon! I really appreciate the extra effort.I do, of course, really enjoy both your Albus and your Minerva (perhaps Minerva in particular, as I'm very fond of her and read her whenever possible). But I suppose that goes without saying, since I've come this far. I'd also like to say that I really like Gertrude Gamp. She's very believable and lots of fun to read. So thank you for including her and all the other rich characters in this story. They make it that much more enjoyable.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you! I really appreciate your taking the time to review. I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
Yup, I deliberately took the Gamp name from canon -- it's a family we know is pureblood, but we don't know anything about them, so it seemed to offer a lot of possibilities. The other canon characters whom I've borrowed but who never really appear in person in the books seemed fun to play with, too. It helped provide a little more "canonness" to a story set during a period we don't know much about from the books, I thought.
Thanks again for reviewing . . . it's good to know that people are reading the story and enjoying it.
Aww, what a cute chapter! Albus' letter was so sweet. I like that Minnie was trying to think like a Slytherin and reason out Gertie's letter again. The conversation about her trip is going to be interesting to say the least.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! Albus's letter was the highlight of the chapter, I thought. It is interesting to see Minerva trying to figure out Gertie's motivations. She's operating with too little information at the moment, however, but she'll learn more.
Lovely letter from Albus there. I love this story. Can't wait for the next bit.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! Now if Albus were only so sweet in person . . . .
Thank you for reviewing!
Hi - just popping in to say how much I've been enjoying this story. I'm really bad at leaving my love for authors, but I'm trying to rectify that.
The story has kept me captivated through out and I loved how you used the flash backs in the early part of the story. I especially loved the adventurous bits with the war against Grindewald.
Looking forward to seeing where the rest of the story goes.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you very much! I really appreciate reviews -- it's the only compensation I receive (other than the enjoyment of writing the story, of course).
I'm glad you liked the Grindelwald chapters. That sequence was fun to write and fairly different from the rest of the story, especially the last four -- Hiding, Seeking, Finding, and Escaping. Coming up soon after Minerva returns to Hogwarts, we'll see what happened at the McGonagalls after Minerva returned from Carson's funeral.
Thanks very much for your review!
Minerva is so sneaky! I didn't think she had it in her.Great Chapter. Will Albus make an appearance any time soon?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
We'll be visiting Albus back at Hogwarts a few times, but not in the next chapter. And Minerva can try to be sneaky, and will be successful, but . . . she's no Slytherin!
Thank you for reviewing -- I really appreciate it!
Hmm, does Valerianna know something of Minnie's crush on Albus? Because she certainly seems well-informed. Kitten indeed. Lol. Quin's kids are cute, and the insight that Hogwarts would stunt natural magic...curious. Good work!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Or Albus's on Minerva? Or just basic jealousy of any other female in his life?
Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the thanks. It's a pleasure to review such a well-written story.
Whew, Quin can spin a tale! Add in the accent and he needs his own dictionary. At least he's not after Minnie and just enjoys flirting. Interesting chapter, with the six degrees of seperation and all. Good work.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
You're welcome for the thanks. I'm glad you are enjoying the story so much.
Quin is a fun character to write and a bit exhausting, too!
Thanks for the review.
Oh, they are getting so close! When will they finally admit their feelings? I love the suspense of it all!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
It will be a while, so I'm glad you love the suspense! But only in terms of chapters -- they won't suffer too long, really. It's only been a few days, after all! *grin*
Thanks for your review!
Two honorable people doing their damndest to be honorable and missing out on the fun because of it! Where's cupid when you need him?I'm glad Minerva's going to get the Transfiguration classroom.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I know! Those two need a kick in the behind -- and they'll get it!
Thanks for reviewing!
Gotta love the cat scene. And dealing with the idea of Legilimency when she was embarrassed over her accident, poor Minnie. Good chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks. I enjoy writing Tabby!Minerva.
Thank you for reviewing!
So many things to be explained, so much honour to overcome. At least they're going to try to communicate more frequently. Good chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The question of what constitutes ethical behavior in the wizarding world is very complex. When such power is available, the temptation to use it at will must be pretty strong. No wonder the wizarding world is a place of such extremes.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I know -- it's the only thing I can think of to justify a place like Azkaban! (BTW, did you notice that the book that Minerva chose to Transfigure back at the beginning of RaM was on the ethics of magic? Thought it was the sort of book that Albus would have on his shelf . . . you'd think they'd have a course on that at Hogwarts!)
This was like their first date, even though they don't quite realize it was. Charming and romantic.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! It was, wasn't it?
Thank you for reviewing!
Ah, Wilspy knows, shw does, lol. A breeze while dusting, eh? I like the almost date with Albus being sneaky and taking them to Diagon Alley. Good work.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for reviewing!
fabulous start. can't wait to read the rest!!!!!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I'm glad you like it! The story starts off simply and gets more involved later on. Hope it continues to please! And thank you very much for reviewing!
I can't help but laugh at the image in my mind of Hagrid on the broom. Followed by the image of a wizarding family on the broom. That was very unselfish of Minerva to do that for him.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Glad it gave you a laugh! I had a smile on my face as I wrote it! I try to have fun with it! And Minerva has some very nice qualities . . . .
