Minerva has just finished her first term teaching. A series of misunderstandings leads to an embarrassing moment, injured feelings, regret, growing understanding, then resolution. A Minerva McGonagall fic set in 1957, with forays into the past. More than a Romance; stories within stories. Features Minerva, Albus, and Poppy, with appearances by Slughorn, Grubbly-Plank, Hagrid, Flitwick, Moody, Riddle, Grindelwald, and other canon characters. Not DH-compliant. Disregards DH.
Nineteen Parts.
Most content T-rated, but ratings rise to M and MA for several later chapters. Overall M rating reflects later content.
Pertinent warnings in individual chapter summaries.

Reviews for Resolving a Misunderstanding
Aaargh! We know what they're doing wrong. At least Minerva is thinking about what Quin said to her. She's rather like a moth to a flame. She can't stay away from Albus and refrain from letting affection slip through. As it is, she is trying too hard to be someone different than she truly is.Besides, Albus probably would have slept better with her next to him anyway. After a bit of, erm, exertion?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, some, um, exertion would have helped them both sleep quite well! But . . .
We'll see Albus's point-of-view soon. And it evolves some, too.
Thanks for reviewing!
Poor Minerva! If she keeps going at this rate, IT won't be a secret for much longer. I hope one of the slips up somehow! I am really enjoying this story still! Can't wait for the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I'm very glad that you're still enjoying the story! It is very encouraging to hear.
There are a few bumps before the big slip -- and don't forget that when one slips, one usually falls, and falls often hurt . . .
However, there are lots of nice, warm, and even fluffy moments between now and then, and I do believe in happy endings, so the fall will not be fatal!
The next chapter will be up in a day or two.
Thanks for reviewing! I really appreciate it!
Oh my stars and garters! This is the first time I've read anything of the sort featuring Hagrid. I'm glad he's had the opportunity to know that he is loveable.Talk about being the fly on the wall. Poor Minerva! You certainly have some interesting stuff rolling around in your head.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, well, rolling around and waiting for me to get rid of it somehow -- so I write it down for you folks! Aren't you lucky! LOL! I've known what Hagrid's "problem" was since the beginning (hee!), but wasn't entirely sure how I was going to present it -- then it came to me when I wrote the previous Wilhelmina/Hagrid scene exactly how to do it. I think it worked in a way it wouldn't have if done from a different p.o.v. For me, anyway.
Glad you liked it! Hope it doesn't give you nightmares, though. *grin*
Thanks for reviewing!
Well, Albus isn't going to win any popularity awards with the Hogwarts Caretaker's union. No shackles, iron maidens, branding irons or other fun stuff. On top of that, a werewolf on the staff. What other notions might that man have in his head?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Silly wizard, wanting to do away with proper discipline! What's the world coming to! *grin* Of course, Pringle will have a right little acolyte in Filch, so I don't know if Albus's idea of getting him an assistant will do what he hope it will. . . .
Thanks for reviewing!
Poor Hagrid and his broken heart. At least it's another cue for Minnie, with Hagrid being sad because he didn't know if his Meena-bird loved him or not, that she should tell Albus and let him decide.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Well, it may take a while for all the various hints to sink in for Minerva. The next chapter is called "Many Meetings," and Minerva meets with Wilhelmina, among others, and discusses the older witch's relationship with Hagrid. Rather an awkward conversation!
Good to know DH!Albus won't be making an appearance: he's very different from RaM!Albus after all.
Hehe, awkward staff meeting and afters. Is Dustern part Seer? "Soon he'll be hiring...a centaur for Divination" Lol.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Naw, Dustern's not a Seer, that's just The Author's Weird Sense of Humor!
Actually, there are some parallels between DH!Albus and RaM!Albus, but I'm ignoring DH and just going by my timeline and outline. Essentially, I'm putting it out of my mind entirely. Besides, as I've said elsewhere, I've grown rather fond of this story and the characters as they're developing, so I don't really want to try to twist it around and force it into a mould that it wasn't intended for. I'm just glad that my Muse didn't flee into the wild blue yonder never to be seen again!
Thanks very much for reviewing!
The Hogwarts teachers sure are an interesting bunch!
Hopefully Minnie see more points that prove Quin's prophecy before it's too late.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. And aren't they just! As for Minerva . . . you'll have to wait and see, but you may like to know that I'm a big fan of happy endings! Thanks for reviewing.
Well, here's an interesting chapter! I love looking at the relationships between all the characters indivudual, but the politics of the group dynamic are fascinating. Great job capturing them!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a peculiar group to have working together, too.
Minerva finally blurted when she called Albus "dearest"! Perhaps at some future time, Albus will remember? She kissed him, even if it was on the cheek. With the restrained way these two act around each other, that's the equivalent of slamming him against the wall with intentions of having her wicked way with him. Now, if Albus will just take off the blinders we could have some very happy moments, soon.Good luck to us all with Deathly Hallows and have a good trip.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
"With the restrained way these two act around each other, that's the equivalent of slamming him against the wall with intentions of having her wicked way with him."
LOL! I love it! You're so right!
I'm crossing my fingers about Deathly Hallows! One thing's for sure, I won't be starting my trip back home until after I've finished the very last sentence!!! I can't imagine having the book half read sitting in my car -- it would be screaming out at me to read it! *grin*
There's always AU! Have a good week!
What torment! Minerva almost blurted. I wonder what Albus was thinking, beyond the looks he couldn't quite keep off his face.Perhaps the castle could cooperate and lock them in a room together overnight? And what's upsetting Hagrid?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, Minerva will almost blurt a few times until she finally does blurt! Albus . . . poor fellow was thinking how beautiful/wonderful/lovable Minerva is and how he'll never be able to be any closer to her.
And you will all soon learn what's up with Hagrid! Very soon!
Thank you for reviewing! :D
Since JKR hasn't really told us much of anything about Minerva and Albus personal lives, your version might not be AU. Who cares if it is anyway? She can make the money as long as we get to hijack the characters. It's clear that Minerva's parents understand what is going on and are willing to facilitate. Good!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
That's right! I agree! There's no way we are diverting any profit away from her! How many gazillions does she have now? LOL!
Yep, now that Albus showed up at their doorstep with his flimsy excuse to see their daughter, they think he might feel the same as she . . . and they certainly aren't unhappy about it!
Thanks for the review!
So this is where Albus' willingness to allow Remus Lupin into Hogwarts began. I look forward to seeing how you have him handle this humanitarian issue and Minerva's response.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes -- and it helped him learn to deal with the issue differently, as well. Well, you'll see the various effects this may have on Albus (and on Minerva, of course). Thanks for the review!
Ooh, a mini break-through! Good chapter. Have fun on your vacay!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks very much! I need a bit of a holiday! Thank you for the review -- glad you liked the chapter!
Delightful! Valerianna made a fool of herself and Minerva kept her cool. I'll be waiting (sort of) patiently for the next chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Glad you liked it! The chapters will come fairly quickly for the next week or two, after which I'll likely be updating once a week or so.
Thanks for the review!
oooh, yay! Pick on Valerianna time xDI really liked this chapter =DOh, and I figured out where “‘Almost entirely’ is not entirely, though, Gertrude,” Minerva replied somewhat sternly. is from!It was Keira Knightly who said it, but it was in the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice. She was talking to Mr. Darcy and his sister about her character (Elizabeth Bennet)'s piano playing. The conversation was something like this:Elizabeth Bennet: "Your unfortunate brother once had to put up with my playing for a whole evening."Georgianna Darcy: "Why he said you played very well."Elizabeth Bennet: "Well he is mistaken."Fitzwilliam Darcy: "No, I said you played quite well."Elizabeth Bennet: "Quite well is not very well; I am satisfied."It was something like that *shrugs* and it was similar to what you had it your story. I was sitting on the train, on my way home after seeing the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie again, and suddenly a bulb went off in my head EUREKA! It's from Pride & Prejudice! hehe, I knew Keira Knightly said it :P
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! Glad you liked the chapter.
Now that you've heard that phrase once, you'll likely hear many variations on it now for the rest of your life! Like those annoying jingles that don't leave you! haha! It's a classic kinda line to use, particularly when someone is being censorious and maybe a bit overly prudish and hypercritical about something. It sounds like an original Pride and Prejudice kind of line -- very Jane Austen-y. I should re-read Pride and Prejudice -- it's been at least 30 years since I last read it. It's a great read for a teenager, I think. I wonder if I would still like it . . . . I have to pick up Anthony Trollope again, too -- talk about funny! His characters are a riot! Glad you remembered the scene it reminded you of -- I hate that -- it's like having the name of a person or a song on the tip of your tongue and you just can't remember it. It's always such a relief when you finally do!
But I digress rather widely from the topic! -- Thank you for your review! I am very glad you are still enjoying the story. There will be another chapter up later today, I believe.
Oooh, it continues! I really liked the character exposition with Minerva offering transfiguration tutoring to her fellow students without ever mentioning it to Albus. I can't wait for the ball and to see what Valerianna is planning! And... it's ocurred to me that Mmad alliterates with Mmore. *cough*
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Hey, there! Thank you for your review! Glad you liked that detail. There should be another chapter up today or tomorrow.
Minnie doesn't really have a sneaky, suspicious and subtle portion to her mind, does she? Because she can't seem to think through Valerianna's scheme, or why the warnings matter. Of course, knowing a bit more about polite society might help her in unravelling the plot and feeling more grateful for her friends' concern. Delciously sneaky chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
She does have a sneaky, suspicious portion of her mind, I think, she's just engaging it in the wrong way and focussing on the wrong things. She is somewhat distracted by her own preconceptions, unfortunately. However, it gives us a story!
I'm glad you like the chapter. There will be another one up later today or tomorrow!
Thank you for your review!
The big five-oh! I'm highly impressed with your vast knowledge of Roman numerals. Anyway, great chapter and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
LOL! I hope that's not the most impressive thing about my writing! There are really only a handful of Roman numerals, too, fewer thatn the ten we have (i.,e., 0 - 9); you just have to combine them. (M, C, L, X, V, and I.) There will be another chapter up this weekend.
What a lovely reminisce of the scene in Gertie's classroom. Gertie seems to have a better sense of what is going on between Albus and Minerva than the two of them do.Valeriana....Livia.....Same difference?
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Those old Roman aristocrats certainly harbored a lot of nasty women among them, didn't they?
However, when I came up with the name "Valerianna," I was thinking more of valerian root -- you want to hold your nose when you're around it, and Valerianna inspires the same reaction in some of those unlucky enough to know her!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I suddenly realized that you were likely referring to Sian Phillips' portrayal of Livia in "I, Claudius" -- that was so long ago! I remember being hooked on it when I was a teenager and it first aired on PBS -- and my mention somewhere that I see Valerianna as looking somewhat like Sian Phillips. She was beautiful . . . still is, I think.
Response from Hypnobarb (Reviewer)
Hi, MMADfanYou had mentioned Sian Phillips as an inspiration for Valerianna in an earlier review response when I mentioned thinking of Bette Davis in the role. Both women could do her well. Sian Phillips has played some really exotic manipulator roles - Livia in I, Claudius and and the Bene Geserit Reverend Mother Helen Somethingorother in Dune. She did bald really well in Dune. Maybe somebody she offends could snatch her head bald in Resolving a Misunderstanding? Just a suggestion. Have a good weekend!Barb
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
LOL! I love your suggestion! She did look surprisingly good in Dune, didn't she? (Was that a slow-moving movie, or what?)
She's been in some recent TV stuff, too, I think, though blessed if I can remember any of them. I think she was recently in one of those Midsommer Murders episodes, or maybe it was some other mystery.
But snatching her head bald -- that still has me chuckling!
Quidditch sounds like a game for the young.Period.Minerva/Albus romance takes another half step backwards. Aaargh!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Like hocky and rugby, but you still see uber-competitive middle-aged people out there bloodying themselves up like weekend warriors! But I think maybe Gertie won't be playing any more Quidditch!
Thanks for the review!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I mean "hockey," of course!
Now, we have the two steps back. Albus is being all honorable and Minerva is having second thoughts. They are both being so darn cerebral when one of them just needs to blurt it out.Dang.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, it's a two-steps-forward-one-back kind of dance they're doing, but eventually, they'll run right into each other! Thanks for the review!
Quin is pretty good at giving readings. Now, there's a man who uses his skills in divination in a practical way. He applies it to business, uses it to get to know people better....He took the news of Minerva's heart having a prior commitment pretty calmly. Part of me wonders if he's thinking he could be the one to help her get over it?Minerva's letter could be a "one step forward" in her relationship with Albus. Give the man a little prodding and he might just take the next move.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Quin and Minerva have known each other a very short time, but they are fast becoming friends. Quin will continue to play a role in the story. And Minerva's letter was rather revealing, at least to those who aren't willfully blind!
Thanks for the review!
Interesting similarities between Minnie and Gertie: stubborn, loyal, nit-picky and subtly caring. Good chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks!
Haha. I guessed right about the elf mailing the lettter. Seems liks Albus needs help in letter interpretation. Trying to get Quin and Minnie set up indeed! She and Albus were both up and drinking tea at the same time, for goodness sake. They definitely need more unpolite interference from friends to open their eyes. Good work!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
They'll get some more hints and nudges, but it will take a while yet, and various other events will intervene. Thanks for reviewing!
Ooh, natural divination is a handy thing. If only Minnie would listen to everyone's good advice. I hope a house-elf comes and mails her letter while she sleeps. Excellent chapter.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
